Breast Surgery Combined with Tummy Tuck and/or Liposuction
by Charlotte Rhee, MD, F.A.C.S., P.C.
Many of my patients come to me seeking help with the changes that can occur after childbirth. Following childbirth, a woman’s breast can grow to uncomfortable proportions or just the opposite can happen. A woman’s breast can
actually lose volume and shrink, resulting in the breast appearing “deflated.”
Additionally, a large number of women come to me seeking help with the
post partum changes of their abdomen. During pregnancy the skin and abdominal wall muscles are stretched. Following childbirth, the abdomen can
protrude and the skin can be loose or sag. In some cases, the abdominal muscles can be so
weakened that the individual may look like she is still pregnant. Despite daily workouts including
sit ups and crunches, a tummy tuck may be needed to restore these muscles.
ing breast reduction. Both groups of women want to have breasts that are proportional to their
body size with the most natural result possible. In certain situations, a breast lift is also needed
to tighten lax skin. The laxity can be the result of pregnancy or weight loss. When a breast lift
is needed, I utilize the lollipop scar technique. A breast lift procedure is very similar to a breast
reduction. The only difference is that with a breast reduction, breast tissue is removed.
Combined Breast/Tummy Tuck and Liposuction Procedures.
Many of my patients who have breast surgery also have other procedures performed at the
same time. This allows for one surgery and one recovery. The most common combined procedures performed by Dr. Rhee are breast surgery, whether it is a breast reduction or augmentation,
combined with tummy tuck, also known as abdominoplasty. For those patients

COMPASSIONATE CLOTHING
President, Nassau County Bar Association
In September, Long Islander Jill Spiritus and her
sister Tracey launched Compassion Couture, (compassioncoutureshop.com). The goal of their eboutique is to make a difference in how the world
views compassionate and ethical fashion. Being
non-meat eaters, and with a sincere concern for the
welfare of the environment, the sisters found it difficult to find clothing made of high-quality materials
that followed the latest fashion trends, while also
being 100% animal-friendly, eco-friendly, and ethical. The site carries a wide array of fashion-forward
handbags, shoes and accessories from companies
that make a conscious effort to reduce their carbon footprint at the factories where their goods are
produced, and help to stimulate local economies in
developing countries by using fair-trade practices.
“All the brands we carry incorporate sustainability
into their practices in some way,” says Jill. “We truly
believe in our mission to demonstrate that there
is a way to find a balance between environmental
welfare and a feminine passion for style.”
Susan Katz Richman, Esq., Principal Court Attorney for
Nassau County Courts, is the 109th president of The Nassau
County Bar Association (NCBA), the largest suburban bar
association in the country. Ms. Richman is the first court
employee to serve as president of the NCBA. A Philadelphia
native, she received her J.D. from Temple University and her
undergraduate degree from Boston University and resides
with her family in Merrick. Ms. Richman is also a Village
Justice in Sea Cliff and Plandome Manor—the first woman
to hold these positions.
Ms. Richman plans to continue the Nassau Bar’s strong
tradition of leadership in responsibly and effectively serving
the needs of the public as well as the legal community.
“These extremely difficult economic times breed multifaceted legal, personal and other issues for all of us,” she said.
Richman plans to ensure that the valuable free legal services that Nassau County Bar Association members provide
to the local community, including monthly free Mortgage
Foreclosure Legal Consultation Clinics.
Many of Ms. Richman’s community contributions are
through projects she has championed at the Nassau County
Bar Association, including helping to establish Bridge Over
Language Divides (BOLD), a law and citizenship initiative
that assists residents in their native languages. She also
chaired the WE CARE Fund, which has raised more than $2
million for individuals in need. For 23 years, she mentored
and inspired students as volunteer coach of the Roslyn High
School Mock Trial team. She also served as Assistant Dean of
the Nassau Academy of Law and was Editor-in-Chief of the
Nassau Lawyer, the monthly journal of the Bar Association.
“The Nassau County Bar Association has the best law
practitioners and most generous members who consistently
provide crucial services and assistance. I look forward to
continuing and enhancing the important contributions the
Bar makes to the legal profession and to the community at
large,” she said.

British Books and Television Shows Abound
It’s a great time to be an Anglophile.

passion of Anglophiles, with its authentic characters,
exquisite sets and costumes, historically accurate
context, and a compelling story with enough subplots to keep viewers glued
to their TV sets, laptops, iPads, or whichever device they are using to view
the programs. The story begins in 1912, and revolves around Lord and Lady
Grantham and their three daughter who inhabit Downton Abbey, an enormous Edwardian country estate. Because there are no male heirs, the family
is grappling with the complicated issue of inheritance. The somewhat tricky
relationships surrounding the family are absorbing enough, but throw in the
“downstairs” crew–the servants–and you have enough intrigue to keep you
watching week after week.
There is a fascinating history and culture attached to the British serving

One of the most charming of these is the Jeeves and Wooster series by P.G.

the post-Victorian summer of 1911 in
a sweltering London. On the cusp of
a war that would change the world, a
new king was crowned, a young Winston Churchill was Home Secretary,
women were beginning to experiment
with more revealing fashions, and the
social fabric of the country–which had
kept the classes in separate worlds for centuries–began to exhibit troubling
signs of fracture. We learn more about the servant culture by meeting Eric
Horne, a butler who later wrote What the Butler Winked At: Being the Life and
Adventures of Eric Horne, Butler. We learn that even within the servant class,
there was a hierarchy and a strict set of rules about who did which chores, who
was allowed upstairs, who served dinner, and who could speak directly to their
employers. “It requires the temper of an angel to take the insults of some of
the gentry,” writes Eric Horne, but writing his memoir in the early 1920s, he
still laments the disappearance of “Old England.”
In At Home: A Short History of Private Life, the brilliant author Bill Bryson,
who usually writes witty travelogues, stays at home—an old Rectory in England, to be precise–and teaches us about the social history of domesticity by
taking us on a room-by-room exploration of his Victorian-era home. Among
other things, we learn about the history of toilets when we focus on the
bathroom, the history of eating habits by visiting the kitchen, and how the
hall changed from being the most important–and largest–part of the house,
to becoming just an area where you hang your coat and hat. The book discusses how people went from survival mode at home to how they got comfortable–and of course, servants played an important role in that discussion.
For a more intense look into Victorian Britain, I highly recommend The Teaching Company’s (thegreatcourses.com) Victorian Britain, a 36-lecture set taught
by Dr. Patrick N. Allitt, a professor of American History at Emory University, that
can be listened to on a CD, MP3 or DVD player. The professor delves deeply
into British history and society before, during and after the 64-year reign of
Queen Victoria, and we learn, not only how dramatically the British empire
changed during those years, but how it affected the rest of the world.
And, of course, how can we forget the Masterpiece Theater classic series,
Upstairs, Downstairs, which, though somewhat dated in production values,
still gives us a gratifying look into the world of an era gone by. O

CAN YOU AVOID “BOOMERITIS”?
It is no secret that once a body enters its fifth decade, it becomes less forgiving
of physical ailments. All the little aches and pains are capable of becoming serious injuries, when the body is pushed beyond its capacity through exercise and
hobbies like tennis and cycling. Enter “Boomeritis”, a wave of exercise related
injuries among the baby boomer generation that is keeping orthopedic surgeons
waiting rooms packed. Typical issues include tendinitis, bursitis, stress fractures
and tendon tears.
Here are simple ways to avoid becoming a causality of boomeritis:
Speaking to your doctor: Consult your doctor before beginning a new sport
or activity.
Warm-ups: Prepare the body for activity and get the blood flowing by warming
up. Walking on a treadmill or cycling on a low setting , get the blood flowing and
raise the heart rate. Cold muscles are more susceptible
to injury.
Stretching: Stretching after exercise, especially if you
are past 40, helps the tissues and joints remain flexible
and may help prevent injury. Performance may also be
improved, which is an added bonus.
Cross training: Incorporate different types of exercise into your regimen, to work a variety of muscle
groups. Include cardio, strength training and flexibility
exercises to give the body a total workout and to not
overstress one area.
Consistency: Incorporate 30 minutes of moderate
exercise into your day. Pushing exercising off until the
weekend, causes the body to be more susceptible to
injury.
Be aware of your own body: Your body at 50 is different than your body at
30. It is common to need a rest period or even a day of rest between workouts
to help avoid injury.

THYROID CANCER ON THE RISE IN WOMEN
Thyroid cancer has become three times more common in women, than men, who
are younger than 45 years-old, according to the National Cancer Institute. Experts
are unsure about the reasons behind the increase, but speculate the rise could be
due to advances in thyroid screening, as smaller tumors are now able to be seen
on ultrasounds or scans. Obesity, radiation exposure and diets lacking in fruits and
vegetables are additional possibilities that experts attribute to the rise in numbers.
According to research by the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, for every
four patients that are diagnosed with thyroid cancer, three are women. The good
news, is that if caught early, thyroid cancer is highly treatable. More than 95 percent of patients diagnosed are cured.
The thyroid regulates the heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature and
weight. Thyroid cancer is often a symptomless disease, and is only diagnosed
when a lump in the throat becomes too prevalent to avoid. Women often overlook their symptoms or mistake them for symptoms of other conditions. The
American Thyroid Association estimates that, despite the rise, more than half of
thyroid conditions still remain undiagnosed. When symptoms do manifest, they
include difficulty swallowing, fatigue, breathing problems, or the sensation of a
lump in the throat or vocal changes.
CHRONIC PAIN ON THE RISE FOR BOOMERS
Back pain, osteoarthritis and other painful conditions are all apart of aging. For
the baby boomer generation, however, living with chronic pain is not an acceptable option. Unlike the generation before them, boomers are not taking aches
and pains associated with aging passively.
Because many boomers are exercising to the same degree as they
did in their 30s, their bodies
often feel the consequences.
While being active at every
life stage is imperative to living
healthfully, bones become weaker and muscles degenerate. Disease
also plays a part in chronic pain. As with
almost every medical condition, it increases the incidence of daily discomfort. The
increase in health issue that are evident

up a heavy bag of groceries, pushing that
lawn-mower and bending over the wrong way
– can increase the incidence that boomers experience
chronic pain, as their bodies keep score of small injuries
that add up over time.
While aging and increased frequency of aches and pains
has always been common among this age group, the way
we deal with chronic pain has changed greatly, which is a
positive step for those suffering daily aches. It is no longer

THE INS AND OUTS OF PERIMENOPAUSE
Most women in their 40’s or early 50’s are experiencing some degree of perimenopause, as they are getting closer to when their body begins menopause.
Perimenopause, or pre menopause, is referred to as the time before menopause
actually begins that is often symptomatic of hormonal imbalances and fluctuations as the body begins to produce less estrogen. Women learning about this
period of transition in their body’s health cycle are finding relief as there is now a
label for their mood swings, weight gain and exhaustion that is symptomatic of
this life stage.
Women experiencing physical symptoms of perimenopause may experience changes in their menstrual cycle, headaches, heart palpitations and hot
flashes or night sweats. Emotional symptoms include anger, anxiety, depression, dizziness, stress or
extreme fatigue.
For some women, symptoms can start as early as
10-15 years before your period actually stops. For
others, it can be a few months before menopause
begins. These symptoms can appear as early as
your 30s, or as late as your 50s.
A doctor can diagnosis perimenopause based on
symptoms, in addition to blood tests to check hormone levels.

the disorder.
40 percent of adults who have attention deficit
hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are women, according to a Harvard University study. However, many
women with ADHD are undiagnosed or misdiagnosed. Even though ADHD affects both men and women, it is women who are
less likely to seek help for ADHD symptoms and many doctors are less likely to
suspect female patients are suffering from the disorder.
As a result of the widespread misdiagnosis, women are developing related conditions such as anxiety and depression, obesity and eating disorders and substance
abuse issues. A report published by Medco Health Solutions states the number of
women on ADHD drugs has more than doubled in the past decade.
Because ADHD is diagnosed in childhood first, many young girls who have
ADHD remain undiagnosed until they reach adulthood, due to the less obvious
way ADHD is expressed in girls than boys. Girls often express less hyperactivity
than their male counterparts until they reach adulthood.
Women who feel they have ADHD should consult a therapist, psychiatrist
and or life coach that has experience treating adult ADHD. The right treatment
for ADHD is a treatment plan that concentrates on issues that are inherent to
women with the disorder, such as self-esteem and self blame with rehabilitative tools that teach how to deal with self destructive behaviors that are inherent to the disease. O

All That Jazz
I
cy, caustic, brittle, difficult – perfect words to describe Lilith,
the ex-wife of Frasier Crane on TV’s Cheers and Frasier. Woe
to anyone subjected to her glare or withering sarcasm. While
it’s a no-brainer to know better than to confuse an actress
with her character, Bebe Neuwirth’s pale features, black hair,
angular figure and intensity brought to her work can make it an
easy shortcut to assume that her blood runs as cold as her temper
runs hot. Certainly, news stories peppering the tabloids during
her stint in Broadway’s The Addams Family made it sound as if
backstage relations between her and co-star Nathan Lane were
altogether ooky.
In a 2010 chat with New York magazine, Neuwirth deflected the
drama by saying, “I think we both have a nice, healthy dose of
diva. But we also do really go together.” A year later during our
conversation, Neuwirth is more clinical but no less diplomatic about
Lane. “He is who he is. He works his way and does his things. We
went to work every day, and we were both very professional and
did our work and got along. I will say we are very different animals
as people, and we have very different ways of working, but we are
both very concerned with doing the very best work that we can.”
It’s clear that whatever tensions may have simmered at the LuntFontanne Theater, Neuwirth remains far more rueful and “mystified”
about the press’ coverage of the musical than her experience doing
it. “People would say mean and bad and frequently fictitious things
about our show before we even got out of the rehearsal room. It
made it really hard for us. Not only are we having to do our job,
we’re having to fight off that negative energy at the same time. It’s
like kids on a playground. You just show up, and they start saying
mean things about you, and you go, `But I didn’t do anything!’”
The venom must have come as a shock to Neuwirth, who has
led a relatively charmed life in a notoriously demanding business.
Creating an iconic television character in a hit sitcom, earning major
success on Broadway (a Featured Actress Tony for playing Velma in
the still-running Chicago revival), and getting consistent voice work
and featured roles (Law & Order, Bored to Death) is not taken for
granted by Princeton-born Beatrice Neuwirth, who was training in
ballet from age five and discovered her life’s path at 13.
“I knew I wanted to be a ballet dancer,” recalls Neuwirth, “but it
was becoming apparent to me in a very subconscious way that I
was not going to be a professional dancer. I was performing in lots
of ballets with a regional ballet company, but I did not have the
technique required to be a professional. It was something in the
back of my mind that I really was not facing.
“When I was 13,” she continues, “I saw Pippin on Broadway, and
the choreography and the experience of those performers resonated
so deeply that I thought, `All right. I’m gonna dance on Broadway,
and I’m gonna do that guy’s choreography.’”
“That guy” was Bob Fosse. “I didn’t even think, `Oh, wow, he’s a
God!’ when I saw Pippin. I just recognized myself on stage. It wasn’t
until I was at least 18 or so that I was aware of who he really was.
I thought, `Oh, my God, I have got to work with this guy.’”
She eventually would, but Neuwirth’s parents tried to make sure
education came first. “I told my parents, `I don’t want to go to
college; I want to go to New York and be a dancer.’ But my parents
said, `You have to go to college,’ so I applied to SUNY Purchase
and to Juilliard, because in 1976, these were the only two colleges
close to New York that had dance programs. I applied to both and got into both,
but I chose Juilliard because it was in New York City. I went there for a year,
but it was not a good fit for me. I felt like they were trying to make me into a
modern-dance teacher. All of the teachers were brilliant, and I really loved the
ballet classes, but there was no theater dance, no tap, no singing – nothing
that would prepare me for theater dance.
“So my parents did a really brilliant thing,” Neuwirth recalls. “They said, `We
have committed ourselves to sending you to four years of college, so create
your own college in the city, your own curriculum.’ I did that, and before a year
was up, I got my first job.”
Six hundred hopefuls turned up at an open call for Bob Fosse’s Dancin’, among
them Neuwirth. “I was 18, and I wasn’t ready for it yet,” she notes. “I didn’t get
it, but I got called back, which was pretty nice. And Bob was at the open call,
which was really something.” The following year, Neuwirth was appearing in
the original production of A Chorus Line, so it would be a while longer before
she actually got to work with her idol.
“There was a revival of Little Me,” Neuwirth explains, “and Peter Gennaro
was choreographing it beautifully. But they decided they wanted to reinstate
the original choreography of one of the numbers. So they called Bob Fosse,
and he came with one or two of his original dance
captains and mounted the original choreography that
he had done. He was, of course, spectacular, and I was
over the moon to be working with him. But it was a
peculiar situation to be in, since I felt an allegiance
and loyalty towards Peter. The way Peter handled it,
his elegance – it was a great lesson in diplomacy and
gentlemanliness.
“Anyway, Dancin’ was playing on Broadway at this
point, and Bob liked me and another girl in Little Me,
Gail Pennington (who recently choreographed the
off-Broadway family musical, Freckleface Strawberry).
He went over to Dancin’ and said, `If you need any
replacements, see these two girls who are in Little Me
right now. As fate would have it, Little Me closed about
a month after we opened, and there was an opening
in Dancin’, and I got a job in that. So I didn’t work
with Bob in Dancin’, but I got to do an evening of his
choreography, which was sublime for me.”
That, however, was not the last of Neuwirth’s
association with the All That Jazz genius. “On Sweet Charity (1986) I worked
with him and (his second wife) Gwen Verdon. And, you know, Gwen mounted
all that choreography. She was a genius equal to Bob. She taught us the entire
show – every single part to every single person. When someone like that
teaches you the choreography, you’re not just learning steps. There’s a whole
gift and lesson as to what those steps really are. She transfers that to you. If
you’re open to it and if you are willing to take it on, it’s thrilling. Bob certainly
addressed the way we danced, but the actual learning of the steps, that was
Gwen. She was there for everything.”
Asked for more insight into the man who created the dances for Sweet Charity
and The Pajama Game, not to mention directing the films, Cabaret and Lenny,
Neuwirth admits, “I’m not gonna say I’m somebody who knew him intimately
and deeply; I can’t comment on any of that. What I knew of him was a very
gentle soul, very kind. I never saw him go into a rage or anything like that. He
was incredibly respectful of everyone and loved his performers. I thought he
was a great guy. I loved him.”
By the time of Neuwirth’s next Broadway assignment, playing Lola the 1994
revival of Damn Yankees, she was already a known quantity from Cheers, a
period that brought her fame and fortune but not peace. “I was not crazy about
living in Los Angeles at the time. I think if I had been in a happier personal
life, I probably would have enjoyed the city a lot more. My professional life was
fantastic, working on a great show with great people and great writers. But I
have to say, my personal life was very unhappy.”
Asked if the breakup of her first marriage was the culprit of her misery, the
52-year-old Neuwirth goes into polite but firm lock down. She refuses to
discuss her private life, be it her decision not to have children (“women will
understand why that is far too personal to discuss”) or any health issues she
might have dealt with. As she explains, “It’s a symptom of our culture right
now that we want to know absolutely everything about everybody. This whole
culture of knowing too much. Yes, we wanna know that Newt Gingrich left his
wife on her deathbed and married somebody else if he’s running for president,
because that speaks to the person’s character. But for people who are just
entertainers – and I’m not trying to be cool or cold or anything like that – but
some things are personal and should stay personal.”
And yet, Neuwirth almost leaps at the opportunity to discuss her hips – both
of which have been surgically replaced. “I had my first one replaced when
I was 47 and the other one when I was 49,” she
states. “The first one was terrifying. It was something
I couldn’t even think about. I was depressed for a
very long time with this looming and terrible, terrible
pain. As anyone who’s had arthritis can tell you, it’s
no joke. It’s like being in prison. You can’t walk down
the street. You get to the end of the block and you
go, `okay,’ and you gather yourself up and you gird
yourself to walk across the street. It’s terrible. But I
was determined, and I had a great surgeon who had
worked on many dancers. And I was back in ballet
class eight weeks later. Within a year, I was back on
Broadway playing Roxie in Chicago.”
Neuwirth is also quick to point out that Bob Fosse’s
twisty, sinewy choreography, which has led to
injuries and chronic problems for other dancers,
has never been a problem for her, nor did it lead
to her surgeries. “My hip replacements would have
happened no matter what; that’s just they way I was
born. My father had a hip replacement, and when I
was born, I was put into casts because my legs were – I don’t know what was
wrong with them, but that’s what they did in 1958-1959, if the baby’s legs had
hip dysplasia or whatever, and they were folded out or folded in too much. I’ve
spoken with a physical therapist, and she said many of her patients who have
had hip replacements earlier rather than later in their lives have had the same
things when they were kids. I’m just glad it happened sooner rather than later
because it’s easier to come back and start dancing again.
“I will talk about my hips,” explains Neuwirth, “because I feel I have something
to offer to people who are going through similar things. In fact, a couple of
years ago I spoke with my friend, Tom Viola, who is the executive director of
Broadway Cares, and told him, `I think we should do something for dancers in
the way that Phyllis Newman has done with the Women’s Health Initiative.’
And so Broadway Cares gave us the seed money for The Dancers’ Resource.
The emotional trauma that a dancer suffers when they are profoundly injured
is difficult and problematic. I felt that The Actors Fund might be able to address
those problems and challenges in a meaningful way. One of the first things we
did was provide emotional counseling for dancers who are injured but plan

insurance issues – all kinds of complications and challenges that dancers face.
We provide a place for them to deal with these challenges in a way that is
completely confidential and very compassionate – and free!”
Helping Neuwirth overcome her own challenges of age and genetics is a
sensible lifestyle, including some exercise and caloric monitoring but nothing rigid
or excessive, which is likely to induce sighs from anyone who envies the actress’
famously lithe frame. “I belong to a gym,” she says, “and weeks will go by where I
go a couple of times a week, but oh man, it’s a drag! I go to ballet class whenever
I can; that’s really where I love to be. It doesn’t feel like I’m staying in shape or
doing something healthy; it just feels like I’m being myself and feels wonderful.
That’s really sort of it. I mean, I try to eat in as healthy a way as I can. I’m not
crazy – I’m not obsessive about how I eat. I love meat and I love sugar and I love
chocolate. I’m very lucky to have always had a pretty brisk metabolism, and I have
been very active my whole life, so I think that’s been helpful.”
Though admittedly diffident in
social situations (“I’ve figured out
how to do it, but it’s an uncomfortable
place to be”), Neuwirth doesn’t shy
from taking the stage all by herself.
When not in front of a camera in

Three Sustainable Costa Rican Resorts
Green and Luxurious
Costa Rica is recognized for it’s biodiversity and
breath-taking natural landscape. The country boasts
some 12,000 species of plants, 1,239 species of
butterflies, 838 species of birds, 440 species of reptiles and amphibians, and 232 species of mammals.
Costa Rica also has over 10% of the country under
national protection, and is increasing that number
under the payments for environmental services plan
which pays land owners for private preserves. Ecotourism helps offset this expense by capitalizing on
its private and public protected lands.
Cayuga Sustainable Hospitality is a company
based in San Jose dedicated to the management
and development of hotels, lodges and other tourism related projects in Latin America and the Caribbean that have an ecological, conservationist or
sustainable aspect to it. We visited 3 of their sustainable resorts.
Lapa Rios is nestled deep inside a primary rainforest and offers a unique combination of upscale
luxury and rugged nature encounters in this private
nature preserve. It is an experience like no other.
We lived in an open-air
screen-walled bungalow
with a net-surrounded bed.
You can’t help but feel connected to your natural surroundings. The large deck features a soft canvas hammock and cold shower overlooking the forest with expansive views of the ocean.
When we first arrived to our bungalow, we were
greeted by a sloth on a tree branch overhanging our
deck just five feet away from us. We were mesmerized
by this incredibly slow moving creature as it leisurely
made its way from branch to branch for the next two hours.
We were serenaded to sleep by the gentle sounds of the night only to be woken
at 4 a.m. by the powerful roar of howler monkeys. There is no Internet, telephone,
air conditioning or TV in the bungalow or on the premises (there is a cell phone
service but you are requested to only use your phones in the bungalow). It’s back to
basics. You and nature in a setting you’ve only dreamed of.
You will encounter an abundance of wildlife here. We saw spider, capuchin and
howler monkeys, a kinkajou, an armadillo, black and turkey vultures, macaws,
parrots, toucans and so much more.
The beautifully presented gourmet food at the restaurant is not prepared by
its chef. In fact it has no chef. Instead, Lapa Rios trains and employs locals who
combine local traditional foods and dishes with more standard fare. It makes for
a very special food experience.
Note: Some of the lower rooms require a fairly intensive hike up the stairs from
the bungalow to the dining and pool area. We were at the lower end of the resort
and while it offers even more seclusion and privacy, the walk was a tiring 170
plus steps up (and for just the meals alone–that’s three times a day.) You will burn
enough calories to earn your meal.
What to do: A variety of hikes are offered including a sunset or early morning

(5:45 a.m.) bird hike (You might as well. The howler monkeys are a reliable alarm
clock), a four hour Osa trek through the rainforest, a sustainability tour of the
premises and an informative and scenic sunset mangrove kayak tour.
Arenas Del Mar is a luxurious resort sitting above a beautiful beach and sits next
door to the magnificent Manuel Antonio Park. Of the three resorts we visited, it
is the most luxurious. With only 38 rooms, it has the feel and of a larger high-end
resort, yet they cater to your every need as if you were their only guest. The rooms
and suites are smartly furnished and offer beautiful ocean views from the terraces.
The resort combines high-end luxury with back-to-basics natural beauty. During our breakfast at the open-air restaurant we were entertained by white faced
capuchin monkeys swinging through the trees. (Don’t worry–they don’t come to
your table to share your food.).
The resort is hilly, but you don’t have to climb the heights unless you want to.
Just pick up the phone twenty four hours a day and request that a driver pick you
up and within minutes, a golf cart will be waiting to escort you to your destination
within the hotel.
What to do: Take the tour of beautiful Manuel Antonio Park. You can visit
alone, but it is best to have a guide escort you. Our guide was a wealth of information and spotted a variety of wildlife that we would have easily passed by had
we been on our own.
Take the 10 zip line, 15 canopy tour nearby at MidWorld across a lush forest or
experience the thrill of a lifetime and sail through the air on the longest Superman line in Costa Rica. Start your journey on a forested mountain-top, and fly
high above the Rio Cañas for over a kilometer at about 50 miles per hour. The
ride lasts only about 45 seconds but rest assured–the memory will last a lifetime.
After your adventure experiences, return to Arenas and luxuriate at their
Brisas Spa.

Theatre at Molloy College
This unique performance offers a rollicking
crash course in love, seduction, death…and
olive oil! In this semi-autobiographical show,
Maria Cassi provocatively poses the question,
“By what rules do we live and who decides
what they are?” In her own inimitable way,
Cassi is a comic anarchist, reinventing the rules
of her conservative upbringing to reflect her
own maverick romanticism. With an expressive
face, a gift for mimicry and a soulful voice, the
charismatic performer traces her sensual journey
from rebellion to freedom to true liberation.
