A Happier New Year Starts With A Happy New You
Get a Hot Body with the Latest Advances in Cosmetic Surgery
by Stephen T. Greenberg, M.D.
Winter is the best time to have that cosmetic surgery procedure
you have been dreaming of. Breast augmentation, breast lift or
breast reduction with the most beautiful and natural-looking results,
can be combined with liposuction, tummy tuck or other non-surgical
procedures to create a whole new you. Body contouring can also be
the answer to reshaping those undesirable areas of your body. Take
advantage of the latest technology in both surgical and non-surgical
procedures and unveil a beautiful new body as the weather gets warmer.
There are several new and amazing technologies that are sure
to deliver excellent results to anyone looking to enhance their
appearance. Cellulaze is the latest revolutionary technology that
permanently removes cellulite in just one treatment. It is the first
cellulite treatment that attacks the structure of cellulite for clinically
proven, longer-lasting results.
exact three dimensional replica of her body on screen. This allows women to actually see
the expected result in advance of any surgical procedure. The photorealistic result can
be viewed from all angles, and implant size can be adjusted to meet a patient’s needs as
closely as possible. For the first time, women can select implant size, shape, and position
and view the expected outcome on their own body.
If you decide that this isn’t the time for cosmetic surgery, but would like to look
younger, the combination of the latest injectables and highly advanced laser options can
freshen up your face and give you a youthful appearance.
There is no better time than
now to consider that cosmetic
surgery procedure that will
allow you to show off a
younger and more vibrant
looking you this Spring!
In addition to the exciting Cellulaze technology, is the introduction
of the Sientra® new cutting-edge “gummy bear” breast implants
recently approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). These new implants
provide patients additional options for a customized look, a fuller breast shape, a choice
of different shapes and a more customized augmentation. This along with Portrait 3DTM
Imaging for those patients considering breast augmentation, is breakthrough technology
that enables women to see what they will look like after breast augmentation surgery.
As more and more women are considering breast augmentation, there is a great value
and benefit to this latest technology. The Portrait
3DTM system photographs a patient’s body before her breast procedure by creating an
“Trinity” is a three-in-one non-invasive laser skin rejuvenation system
that will reverse sun damage, remove wrinkles and tighten skin.
Combining the laser treatment with a “Liquid Facelift” (Restylane®,
Botox® Cosmetic or Juvéderm® injections), replaces lost volume and
erases wrinkles creating the perfect skin rejuvenation program.
I remain committed to working with my patients on the importance
of overall health, diet, exercise and maintaining a positive state of
mind. A comprehensive assessment of each person’s needs provides for a positive and
realistic result as well as a natural and younger look. Whichever procedure, or combination
of procedures that you choose, you can enhance your appearance and feel confident
that you will see the results that you desire. There is no better time than now to consider
that cosmetic surgery procedure that will allow you to show off a younger and more
vibrant looking you this Spring!

Good Advice
Breast Surgery Combined with Tummy Tuck and/or Liposuction
by Charlotte Rhee, MD, F.A.C.S., P.C.
Many of my patients come to me seeking help with the changes that can occur after childbirth. Following childbirth, a woman’s breast can grow to uncomfortable proportions or just the opposite can happen. A woman’s breast can
actually lose volume and shrink, resulting in the breast appearing “deflated.”
Additionally, a large number of women come to me seeking help with the
post partum changes of their abdomen. During pregnancy the skin and abdominal wall muscles are stretched. Following childbirth, the abdomen can
protrude and the skin can be loose or sag. In some cases, the abdominal muscles can be so
weakened that the individual may look like she is still pregnant. Despite daily workouts including
sit ups and crunches, a tummy tuck may be needed to restore these muscles.
ing breast reduction. Both groups of women want to have breasts that are proportional to their
body size with the most natural result possible. In certain situations, a breast lift is also needed
to tighten lax skin. The laxity can be the result of pregnancy or weight loss. When a breast lift
is needed, I utilize the lollipop scar technique. A breast lift procedure is very similar to a breast
reduction. The only difference is that with a breast reduction, breast tissue is removed.
Combined Breast/Tummy Tuck and Liposuction Procedures.
Many of my patients who have breast surgery also have other procedures performed at the
same time. This allows for one surgery and one recovery. The most common combined procedures performed by Dr. Rhee are breast surgery, whether it is a breast reduction or augmentation,
combined with tummy tuck, also known as abdominoplasty. For those patients

Need some motivation for losing weight? Come to
Book Revue on Tuesday, January 8 at 7 p.m. and

6rJanuary 2013r-0/(*4-"/%80."/
Where did you grow up and where do you live now?
I grew up in Bayside, Queens and have lived and worked
in New Hyde Park for 19 years.
What do you like about living and working on Long
Island?
The variety of the Long Island towns ranging from the
beauty of the Hamptons and other beach areas to an
abundance of activities including performing arts, parks
and upscale restaurants are most appealing.
What is your involvement with the Long Island Coaching
Alliance (LICA)?
As a presentation skills trainer, LICA has helped me
learn how to integrate coaching techniques.
I am on the LICA Board and also their public relations
director. My role is to attract members and also get the
word out about the organization so that Long Islanders
know where to turn for a qualified coach. LICA just
celebrated its 15th anniversary with an event featuring a
panel of distinguished coaches who discussed the future
of coaching and growing a coaching business.
Why is coaching important for women?
Working with a coach is invaluable for women who
strive to get to the next level in their careers, businesses
or want to find greater fulfillment in their personal lives.
Some areas that coaches can assist with are balancing
work and family, caring for aging parents and finding
your passion.
What advice do you have for women in the New Year?
Ask yourself “What aspects of my life would I like to
change?” Seek help if you can’t move forward. Remember
you’re not alone in your quest. Consider improving
important skills, such as public speaking. Whether you’re
looking to advance your career, grow your business or
enhance personal relationships, don’t overlook how you
present yourself. Remember you only have one chance
to make a positive first impression.
dying father that he was going to make some major lifestyle changes. That led to his decision for a
stomach bypass—and a drop to 190 pounds. But
fifty of those pounds gradually crept back until he
finally devised a plan, stuck to it, and got his life
back. Never Going Back is Roker’s inspiring, candid,
and often hilarious story of self-discovery, revealing
a (now slimmer) side of his life that no one knows.
With illuminating and sometimes painfully honest
stories about his childhood (as the “husky” boy in
class), his struggle against the odds to make something of himself, and his family life today, Roker reveals the effects that a lifelong battle with weight
issues can have on a person—and how, regardless
of the frustration and setbacks, you must never lose
faith in yourself. Book Revue is located at New York
Ave. in Huntington. For more information, call 631271-1442 or visit bookrevue.com.

Books to Get You Fit
Inspiration for the New Year
We do it every year. On January 1, we make a New Year’s resolution to lose weight, start exercising, and eat healthier foods. The
resolution generally lasts a couple of weeks—or sometimes just
a couple of days—before it gets buried beneath the reality of
everyday life.
But what if there were practical tips and appealing recipes
that made it easy to keep your resolution? By following an
eating plan that fits your needs, you can eat healthier food
and shed pounds without even realizing it.
Lisa Lillien—aka “Hungry Girl”—to the rescue! The bestselling author and Food Network TV host has compiled 650
low calorie recipes in her newest book, Hungry Girl to the
Joy
Max! The Ultimate Guilt-Free Cookbook.
Bauer
According to her bio, “Lisa is not a nutritionist or a dietician – she’s just hungry.” I’m sure we can all relate. Lisa helps
people learn to eat the foods they crave and still maintain their
ideal weight. She not only turns high-calorie recipes into imaginative low-calorie ones, she also helps her followers acquire knowledge
and make long-term lifestyle changes that lead to
permanent weight loss.
The Joy Fit Club: Cookbook, Diet Plan & Inspiration, a
new book by nutritionist Joy Bauer, will also inspire you
to keep your resolutions. A regular contributor to NBC’s
Today Show, Joy not only offers enticing low-calorie
recipes and tips for eating healthier, but she introduces us to 30 real men and women who lost 100, 200,
300 and even 400 pounds by being part of her “Joy Fit
Club.” The “inspiration” mentioned in the book’s subtitle comes directly from them—their stories, tips and
recipes—and the remarkable before and after photos
are all the proof you’ll need!
“New Year’s is a season of positive energy and renewal,” says Joy Bauer, “making it a terrific time to start new
healthy habits. The trick is to make a specific, concrete goal
(lose 10 pounds this month, make half your plate produce
at every meal). If your resolution is too vague, it’s hard
to measure progress and keep yourself accountable.”
A great way to keep those resolutions is to become better educated about food, and Joy’s What The Heck video series is an
easy and entertaining way to do it. “My goal was to give
people a behind-the-scenes look at how popular foods
are made and what they do to our bodies – it’s science
mixed with a little detective work and a whole lot of
comedy. I am amazed at how popular the videos have
been – the 22 episodes have now generated a collecLisa Lillien

aka Hungry Girl
In his delightful and revealing memoir, Born Round, veteran New York Times reporter, columnist and former restaurant critic, Frank Bruni discusses his lifelong struggle with
weight control as part of a family obsessed with food. Plus we

still maintain a healthy weight!
“Over the years, I’ve made many resolutions,” says Frank,
“and broken almost all of the ones that were unreasonable.
I have about a 50 percent success rate with the small-bore,
reasonable ones. Which validates my wider belief: we all
are addicted to this notion of dramatic, quick transformation, and we thus set ourselves up to fail. We’re not being
wimps to go after smaller goals, we’re being smart, and
maximizing the chances that we’ll actually make SOME
progress, which is important. So don’t say: no dessert this
January! Say: dessert half as often as I usually eat it. Or
dessert in half the portion I usually eat it. Don’t say: the
gym five times a week this year! Not if you only go once at
present. Say: the gym two times every week, with the hope/
effort at a third. And so on. I really believe this, and I have to
keep reminding myself of this, because it’s in our natures, when
we want to be better than we are, to set the bar really high. But if
you look back at past failures and their recurrence and you’re honest
about what that predicts for the future, you have to conclude that smaller,
more realistic goals are the way to go.”

LIPOMA RESEARCH STUDY
Do you have a benign fatty tumor under your skin?
The Only Way To Get Rid Of Lipomas Is Surgery
But now there is a possible Non-Surgical Treatment.
The Tests And Examination Will Be At No Cost To You!
Benign lumps of fat are called lipomas. Many people
have one or two and unfortunately some people have
many of them in various places all over their bodies.
There is a treatment being researched that involves
an injection only and no surgery. There will be 8 visits
over a six-month period.
If you wish to participate in this research project, please
understand that an injection of an enzyme (collagenase)
will be used to treat your lipoma. Another type of
collagenase enzyme is present in the human body and
is very important for normal biological functions. The
collagenase that will be injected has been approved by
the FDA to treat another medical condition known as
Dupuytren’s Contracture.
There is no financial compensation for participants.
It is required that you undergo a medical examination
prior to the treatment in addition to an MRI to be sure
that the lump is indeed a lipoma.
The study will be conducted by Dr. Gerut’s office.

When discussing your health with your doctor,
there should be a two sided discussion, right? Theoretically, yes. A study published by Health Affairs,
however, showed that many patients felt too intimidated to have a discourse with their physicians
about their own health and treatment options.
Patients’ confidence levels seem to drastically diminish during doctor patient interaction. The clinical
setting was shown to create a reluctance to be assertive, or even ask questions at all.
“Patients desire a partnership with their healthcare provider. They want to be able to tell their providers what they think about the treatment options
they face that address the problems they have,” according to Dominick Frosch, Associate Investigator
at Palo Alto Medical Foundation Research Institute.
“However, patients are concerned about asking
question or telling physicians what they want. Many are also worried to even
disagree with a physician. They fear that in so doing they may be perceived
as difficult and that could cause them to receive lower quality care in the
future. Patients worry if they are too assertive, they will be labeled as difficult
or dismissed.”
While many patients want to collaborate with their physician regarding
decisions about treatment, they feel that they can’t because doctors act in
an authoritarian manner, instead of being open to dialogue. For this reason,
many patients are turning to the internet, to do additional research on their
treatment options and illnesses. Many feel their health care provider is too
pressed for time and cannot be relied on for additional direction and information.
“There is a lot of movement toward greater partnership between healthcare providers and patients. This is talked about prominently in the Affordable Care Act, and there is a growing body of research that supports that

Night sweats, hot flashes, vaginal dryness and the dwindling occurrence
of menstrual periods. If you are going through menopause, these symptoms
are all too familiar. While most women begin to experience menopause in
their 50s, these symptoms can occur in women before the age of 40 for an
entirely different reason. Indicators like these could be a sign of primary ovarian insufficiency, also known as POI.
Ovaries in women with POI are not functioning at full capacity. Regular
release of eggs is halted and the production of reproductive hormones is
diminished. Many women who have POI are not even aware they have it. Hot
flashes or night sweats may not be something they feel is worth mentioning
to a physician. In combination with how many women see their monthly
menstrual cycle as a nuisance, many may feel happy to skip a month or two.
Irregular or missed periods are also a sign of POI.
“Many women and their health care providers do not take a skipped period
seriously so this leads to a delay in diagnosis. In most case, women in the
reproductive years who have not had a period in 90 days should have testing done to find out why,” stresses Lawrence M. Nelson, MD, CAPT United
States Public Health Service. “Some of these women will have POI. The associated estrogen deficiency is a risk factor for reduced bone mineral density
and osteoporosis in later life.”
The cause of POI is largely unknown, with only 10% of cases traced to a
genetic predisposition or autoimmunity, a disorder where one’s own immune
system attacks body tissue. Depending on the cause, POI may begin as early
as the teen years, or may have been present from birth. POI symptoms can
be alleviated via hormone replacement therapy.
While there is no cure for POI, a recent study from Dr. Nelson’s lab suggests
that most women diagnosed with POI may still have immature eggs inside
their ovaries. Even without treatment, up to 1 in 10 women with POI may
unexpectedly become pregnant after their condition is diagnosed.
“While POI symptoms are similar to menopause it is important to point out
that women with POI differ from normal menopausal women in important
ways. Menopause means a woman has experienced permanent cessation of
menstrual periods and she will no longer be able to get pregnant. We know
that women with POI can frequently have a return of menstrual periods even
years after the diagnosis and approximately 5-10% of them conceive subsequent to the diagnosis without any medical intervention,” emphasizes Dr.
Nelson. “Most women with POI have intermittent and unpredictable ovarian
function that may persist for decades.
Women Caregivers and Depression
A study conducted from 1998 to 2008 by the Health and Retirement Study
found that women caregivers are at a higher risk of prolonged periods of
depression, even after their care giving responsibilities are over. The study
also went on to reveal that wives fare worse, both physically and emotionally,
than their husbands.
“Depression and other mood disorders are common for caregivers, and also
contribute to other types of morbidity associated with care giving. Depending on how caregivers grieve, and if they are able to start their grieving early

to Emily S. Finkelstein, Assistant Professor of
Medicine, New York Presbyterian Weill Cornell
Medical College.
The study showed, that there are few differences in the tasks each spouse takes on
as caregivers, i.e. bathing, feeding and dressing during the final stages of their loved ones
lives’. While feelings of despair eventually
subsided for both genders, women reported a
longer period of depression up to three years
after their husband’s death. Bouts of depression are also accompanied by other ailments,
including high anxiety, insomnia, and decreased immune response to infection, muscle
and joint inflammation and diminished wound
healing.
The length of the depression could also vary,
according to several key factors in the life of
the caregiver, according to Finkelstein. “It depends a lot on the type of support they have during their grieving - i.e. other family members, the types of
relationships they have with other family members and friends, participation in

The American College of Sports Medicine premiered survey results of popular
fitness trends of 2013, and strength and body weight training topped the list
as favorites among women. Missing from the list were pilates and spinning
classes, reigning favorites in years past.
“Women are starting to see that lifting weights and body weight exercises are not exclusive to men. The myths of becoming bulky is slowly dissipating as women realize how empowering it can be to be able to lift weights
and do things like pull ups and pushups,” explains Operations/Community
Development/Coach EJ Baril of Cross Fit Metropolis, New York’s Upper East
Side. “Not only is it good for the body, but it’s good for the soul and that
inner confidence. Strong is not only the new skinny – strong is beautiful.”
What does that mean? There is a new trend brewing in women’s fitness. Body
weight training is back in a big way, sitting at third on the list, behind working out with a personal trainer and strength training. Push-ups and crunches,
corner stone exercises in body weight, require minimal, if any typical gym
equipment. These equipment-free workouts, favored in many boot camp-style
classes are turning towards the use of common objects like picnic tables and
kitchen counters to create modifiable angles for challenging workout positions.
By incorporating everyday items, fitness experts hope working out seems more
feasible to do every day with items found around the home.
Moving away from the high cost of specialized equipment is appealing to
everyone, especially in tighter economic times. “Programs like pilates and spinning, those high cost exercise programs, are no longer in our top 20 in our
survey,” according to surveyor Walter R. Thompson, Ph.D., FACSM, FAACVPR
Associate Dean for Graduate Studies and Research Georgia State University.
“Folks have this mentality of going back to the basics and this may be tied to
the economy.” O

roadway doesn’t turn out stars the way it
used to. The art form that gave us Ethel
Merman, Mary Martin, Robert Preston
and Bernadette Peters now only rarely
produces a bona fide luminary – someone
who not only sings, dances and acts but displays
such unique charisma, the world can’t help but
notice. Sometimes lightning still strikes, however,
and in 1997, Broadway got its first look at Kristin
Chenoweth. It had to look closely, because at 4’11”,
Chenoweth was not your typical chorus girl. But
Theater World noticed her in Steel Pier and honored
her with its newcomer awards, and only two years
later, the diminutive knockout took home a Featured
Actress Tony for You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown.
She played Sally, a role that wasn’t even in the
original version of the musical but was designed
especially for her.
Since then, Chenoweth has had her setbacks (a
2001 sitcom called Kristin that aired only half of
its episodes) and triumphs (originating the role
of Glinda in Wicked), while becoming a familiar
presence on the big and small screen, as well as on
Broadway (most recently co-starring with Sean Hayes
in 2010’s delightful revival of Promises, Promises).
Surely, someone with Chenoweth’s work ethic and
metabolism would be unstoppable, right?
Not quite. Last July 11th, the actress was on
the set of CBS’s The Good Mother when a piece of
lighting equipment came loose, hit her in the face
and knocked her to the curb on which she hit the
back of her head. Knocked out cold, she then stayed
overnight in the hospital and has spent several
months since recovering from the concussion.
She seems her bubbly, voluble self in our autumn
conversation, but there’s no getting around that the
accident has been a life-changer.
“I’m getting better and better,” Chenoweth chirps,
“but it’s a long healing process. I had a bad neck
before, and now it’s really not good. I still have to
deal with headaches, and the brain-concussion
injury can be kind of tricky.”
Asked if she suffered memory loss, the Wicked star
explains, “Not quite amnesia. In the beginning, there
was some struggle to get some of the words out that
I wanted to, but that’s gone. I’m completely getting
it now. Otherwise, I’m usually good at multi-tasking;
it’s taking me a little more time than I’d like to get
back there. But I’m happy to be easing myself back
into life, and that can be very healing. I’m a girl that
goes at 200 miles per hour; I don’t do well at zero.
Let’s say, now I’m at about 30.”
Chenoweth laughs and continues, “I think your
readers will appreciate this. I am in real trouble with
being still and quiet, but it’s necessary in life to have
those times. You have to hear that voice, that inner
voice. I believe it’s God, some people believe it’s
other things. For me, things had been getting so fast
that I was brought to my knees, if you will, to hear
what I needed to hear. I just do my career and have
a full life with my family and friends. But there are
many who do it all – mother and wife and career. It’s
a very difficult time in our world, so to find those
quiet moments is very important.”
When I note that, in a recent Rolling Stone interview,
Bob Dylan points to his 1966 motorcycle mishap as
an almost necessary, even transformational event
in his life – one that forced him to regain control,
Chenoweth replies, “I understand that. There’s the
old me – where I go and go and go and do many
different things. But now I have been brought down
to, `Okay, what’s really important in this life for you,
Kris? What do you really want to be doing in two
years? How do you see it going down? Would you
like to cultivate your friendships and stay close to
your friends?’ Yes! They’re always the ones that have
to understand when things get too busy. But I’ve had
time to reconnect with friends I adore and love, and
I realize just how much they enrich your life. I’m a
good friend, but I needed time to be a good friend.
And I needed time to hear what God was telling me.
‘Time to slow down.’ So that’s what happening. I
guess Mr. Dylan and I have something in common.”
Still, Chenoweth notes that a slowdown is not a
halt. In the months following the accident, she
hosted the Hero Dog Awards on the Hallmark
Channel and flew to Toronto “to mentor some girls
for Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber’s show about finding
the next Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz. Flying, for
me, isn’t great. But the actual mentoring was very
gratifying and healing to me.”
The actress remembers well when she was
the hopeful ingénue, and the effect an audience
could have on her. “I grew up singing in church,”
Chenoweth recalls. “I remember the first time I got
a solo and the reaction to it. But the very first time
I discovered that I had to be on-stage and an actor
was in ballet. In Oklahoma, we have a professional
ballet company, Tulsa Ballet Theater. I was doing The
Nutcracker. I auditioned, and I was too little to fit
into most of the costumes except for the mouse.
Now the mouse’s job is to merely sit next to Clara
in Act Two and watch the dancing. In the middle of
the “Sugar Plum Fairy” or one of the other dances,
there was a vine prop. One dancer dropped it and
then ran offstage. And the next section of dancers
were getting ready to come on. I remember thinking
in my head, `What would a . . . what would a mouse
do?’ So I ran out and got the vine, put it in my mouth
and hopped back.
“Now this is a ballet audience. This isn’t a rock
concert. This isn’t church. The audience clapped. It’s
Tchaikovsky and they’re clapping! And I remember
thinking, `I’m supposed to do this.’ And I was
probably about seven. So that is when I knew.”
Still, whether in ballet or on the theater stage,
Chenoweth had to cope with being just a little
different from the other talent around her. Recalls
the actress, “My piano teacher wanted me to major
in music and piano. My dance teacher said, `You
should change your major to dance; you can do all
kinds of dance.’ My voice teacher at Oklahoma City
University, who is my mentor still today, said, `You’re
not just one kind of singer. You have the capacity to
do a lot of things, and we’re going to hone it, and
work on it and craft it.’ I didn’t understand what she
meant then because I was 18, and I didn’t know. But
she said, `You are petite. You do have an interesting
speaking voice. Those are the things that are going
to make you different.’ I think that’s the key: things
that are going to make you stand out and be special.
“I definitely didn’t get some jobs because of my
height, for sure. I didn’t fit into the chorus. I never fit
the costumes. When you come into Beauty and the
Beast and it’s year three, you gotta be somewhere
close to sizes, and I just wasn’t. But I was a very welltrained, classically trained singer, actress, musician
and dancer. I believe God had a big hand in that, but
I think that made me more right for original work.”
Chenoweth points out that her roles in Wicked and
You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown benefited from her
uniqueness. “Even shows like The Apple Tree, which
wasn’t revived for 40 years because, according to
the composers and writers, they didn’t have the
right person.
Things about me that could have been detriments
– I had people in my life that said, `No, those are
what’s making you different and special. Yeah, you’re
short. You’re little. Your speaking voice, yeah. But let’s
concentrate on what makes you different and what

Regarding the mystery of her own birth parents, Chenoweth is in no rush to find moments for sure. Certainly the FHM cover was one of those moments. I’m

“Also,” adds the actress, “I’ve never seen the gay issue as a sin. Even as a small

There’s straight people in this world. That’s where I know a lot of my extreme
decision because I won the lottery, really.’”
Certainly, Chenoweth doesn’t apologize for making the best of her brains, looks right friends would disagree with me, but that’s okay.”
As for her own love life, Chenoweth, who has been twice engaged and once

The Legacy of Henry Viscardi Jr.
January 2013. A new month. A new year. And a time of
hope to so many.
I learned a lot about hope from a little man, born May
10, 1912. Dr. Henry Viscardi was born with what he called
“twisted little stumps for lower legs.” Hank spent the first
seven years of his life in New York’s Hospital for Deformities
and Joint Diseases. When he came home his mother sent
him to N.Y.C. public schools with his two sisters. The schools
wouldn’t let him take science because he couldn’t reach the lab tables and he was
banned from gym. Kids called him “Ape Man” because his hands nearly reached the
ground when he walked. As an adult, Henry Viscardi was only 3-feet 8-inches tall.
Hank once asked his Mother, “Why me?” Her answer was quick, as he told his documentary biographer Ann Balderston-Glynn. “In her simple peasant voice she told
me that when it was time for another crippled boy to be born in the world, the Lord
and His counselors held a meeting to decide where he should be sent. And the Lord
said ‘I think the Viscardis would be a good family for a crippled boy.’ What a wonderful thing that’s been for me to hold onto for my whole life. To remember.” Ann spent
two years with Hank, making The Legacy of Henry Viscardi Jr. documentary.
Mama Viscardi made no excuses to Hank or for Hank. Neither did Hank. He did
chores. He played playground basketball. He went to Fordham University until the
family money ran out in his senior year.
In 1938 Hank’s doctor warned that his “stumps” were failKids called

head JOB – Just One Break – to help millions more disabled Americans find work.
Hank remembered his promise to Dr. Yanover. He paid it forward.
Three years later Hank opened his own job training workshop in a vacant West
Hempstead garage. He only hired disabled veterans. In the 1960s they moved to
Albertson and he fought local leaders through the State Appellate Court for the
right to open the Henry Viscardi School. Today Viscardi students still get academic,
job and career placement training – and have fun. Hank started the traditions of
school parades with crutches and wheelchairs decorated with crepe paper - and of
luring professional athletes to act in the school’s annual Sports Night plays, including Islanders Bobby Nystrom, Clark Gilles and Pat LaFontaine, boxer Joe Fraiser and
Olympian Sarah Hughes.
On one Viscardi classroom visit, Hank told the kids he’d climbed the highest mountains for them so they could have a full life. Then he handed them their challenge:
to fill others’ minds and hearts with understanding that disabled people are normal,
wonderful people. “I never promise you that it will be easy, but I assure you it will be
worthwhile. So in the dark days, hang in there and remember that for you and me,
to hope is a duty, not a luxury.”
I wish you a 2013 full of hope. O
