Now more than ever, we can count on the latest, exciting technology
to help achieve the best possible cosmetic surgery results. We are
each confronted by the media with hundreds of alternatives to
helping improve our appearance, regain our youth and tone up
our bodies. The reality is that the true secret to maintaining a
youthful look is paying attention to the basic issues that you can
control – getting adequate sleep, drinking plenty of water, watching
your diet and finding the time to exercise. What many of us find,
however, is that this quest for beautiful skin and a beautiful body can be quite frustrating.
Now, more than ever, we can help you obtain the look that you are striving for by
using the available advancements in technology to assist you in attaining your goals.
If you are interested in looking thinner and more shapely, consider our ThinSmart
package, a perfect combination of body contouring procedures. SmartLipo is the
first and only laser-assisted liposuction system to offer a revolutionary and minimally
invasive procedure for the removal of fat with less downtime and fewer side effects
than traditional liposuction. VelaShapeTM is the only FDA cleared device that
effectively and safely contours, shapes and slims the body by reducing cellulite and
firming areas in as little as 4 treatments. The combination of these procedures is extremely
effective in contouring your body and producing a significantly slimmer appearance.
Dr. Greenberg also offers CoolSculpting® by ZELTIQ®, a body sculpting, fat-freezing, non-surgical procedure that reduces inches quickly around the abdomen.
CoolSculpting uses a revolutionary cooling technology to reduce areas of unwanted
fat gently and effectively. Patients see noticeable, natural-looking fat reduction in
treated areas within two months. There is no downtime with CoolSculpting procedures.
One of the most exciting new technologies available is the Artisan laser treatment.
This is a unique combination of “same day”, micro-fractional laser treatments that
provides total skin rejuvenation. This process is remarkable because of its unique
ability to offer the most complete array of laser/light based modalities, providing
successful skin resurfacing and tightening as well as reducing age spots, wrinkles,
stretch marks and acne scars.
Another avenue to consider when pursuing your desire to look younger are
“injectables”, which are quite effective in reducing lines and wrinkles on the face,
without surgery. Botox and other dermal fillers are continuing to grow in popularity.
Exciting new products including Dysport, a wrinkle relaxer, and injectables such as
Restylane containing lidocaine, have expanded the market and increased the options
available to people seeking immediate results with significant reductions in facial
lines and wrinkles. As you consider improving your appearance, consider achieving
a younger and fresher look using these injectable products.
What better time than now to get back into your ideal summer shape? Remember,
the perfect cosmetic surgery package can help create the perfect you.

Breast Surgery Combined with Tummy Tuck and/or Liposuction
by Charlotte Rhee, MD, F.A.C.S., P.C.
Many of my patients come to me seeking help with the changes that can occur after childbirth. Following childbirth, a woman’s breast can grow to uncomfortable proportions or just the opposite can happen. A woman’s breast can
actually lose volume and shrink, resulting in the breast appearing “deflated.”
Additionally, a large number of women come to me seeking help with the
post partum changes of their abdomen. During pregnancy the skin and abdominal wall muscles are stretched. Following childbirth, the abdomen can
protrude and the skin can be loose or sag. In some cases, the abdominal muscles can be so
weakened that the individual may look like she is still pregnant. Despite daily workouts including
sit ups and crunches, a tummy tuck may be needed to restore these muscles.
ing breast reduction. Both groups of women want to have breasts that are proportional to their
body size with the most natural result possible. In certain situations, a breast lift is also needed
to tighten lax skin. The laxity can be the result of pregnancy or weight loss. When a breast lift
is needed, I utilize the lollipop scar technique. A breast lift procedure is very similar to a breast
reduction. The only difference is that with a breast reduction, breast tissue is removed.
Combined Breast/Tummy Tuck and Liposuction Procedures.
Many of my patients who have breast surgery also have other procedures performed at the
same time. This allows for one surgery and one recovery. The most common combined procedures performed by Dr. Rhee are breast surgery, whether it is a breast reduction or augmentation,
combined with tummy tuck, also known as abdominoplasty. For those patients

President/Founder – Moxxie Network

Where did you grow up?
I grew up in Garden City in a close-knit family, with a strong
mother and a supportive father. I now live in Brightwaters. I
have a B.A. from SUNY Oneonta and an MBA from Adelphi.
What is Moxxie Network:
Moxxie is a women’s business community. Although some
call us “just another women’s networking group,” we are anything but! Moxxie is a network of women — as opposed to a
networking group. The difference is that our community embraces women and girls of all ages and phases in their professional development. Our mission is to create a continuum of
support for women as they work their way through life.
Why did you start Moxxie?
As the Director of Sales and Marketing for Target Group Media, a boutique graphic design firm, I was networking morning, noon and night—and loving it. I am by nature a very social person and I’ve always found peoples’ lives and
individual circumstances intriguing. However, I was getting
increasingly disenchanted by all the groups because I wasn’t
meeting people who could afford our graphic design services,
I wasn’t meeting decision-makers and quite frankly, I was
bored at a lot of the events. Since men and women think and
interact differently, I thought, why not embrace those differences and provide sophisticated business women with intimate gatherings that promote stronger, faster connections
— for both business and personal reasons.
I understand that Moxxie Network offers its mentoring services through different programs.
Yes, first is Moxxie, which consists of our core members who
are senior-level executive and professional women. Next, Ms.
Moxxie is a group mentoring program for young professional
women in their 20s and early 30s. Then we have Jr. Moxxie, a
one-on-one mentoring program for college women. Finally,
we offer Moxxie Girl, our partnership with the Girl Scouts that
provides age-appropriate, career-minded role models to girls.
We are currently forming Moxxie Emeritus, which will bring
retired female executives into the fold.
some products, but she is equally concerned about being a good global citizen by participating in fair trade and

An American Journalist Explores the French Way of Life
La Seduction: How the French Play the Game of Life
by Elaine Sciolino (Times Books; 2011)
The French do things differently. They savor their meals, they
dress with much thought (even if it’s just to run out to the store),
they are fascinating conversationalists, and they are experts at seduction. So says Elaine Sciolino, whose captivating new book, La
Seduction: How the French Play the Game of Life, describes life in France
down to the smallest detail—and it’s all fascinating. Ms. Sciolino, former
Paris Bureau Chief and now a Paris correspondent for The New York
Times, has lived and worked in Paris for 10 years and she is still trying to
learn the secrets of seduction that seem to come naturally to the French.
The wide-ranging book documents her journey to learn more about the
elusive French phenomenon.
“Over time, I became aware of its force and pervasiveness,” she writes.
“I saw it in the disconcertingly intimate eye contact of a diplomat discussing dense policy initiatives; the exaggerated, courtly politeness of my
elderly neighbor during our serendipitous

morning encounters;

the flirtatiousness of
a female friend that oozed like honey at dinner parties; the banter of a
journalist colleague that never ended and never failed to amuse. Eventually, I learned to expect it, without quite knowing why.”
Americans view Paris as the city of love, and books and films tend to
perpetuate that storyline. That the French seem to have a more voracious appetite for sex is a common assumption among Americans. And
yet, Ms. Sciolino says, “In France, it’s not about the result; it’s all about
process. What counts is the anticipation and the memory of the act. It’s
almost as if the sex itself is beside the point.”
Sciolino tells us that seduction is tightly bound with pleasure — plaisir
— and it pervades everything in French life and culture. While Americans
do not take time to enjoy the small pleasures in everyday life, the French
10r-0/(*4-"/%80."/rJanuary 2012
revel in them. Sensuality pervades every area, including business and politics. Seduction is an “unofficial ideology, a guiding principle, codified in
everyday assumptions and patterns of behavior so well established and
habitual that they are automatic.” The French are most likely not even
aware of the fact that they are unconsciously always in seduction mode.
Whether kissing the cheek, kissing the hand, or a romantic kiss, there
is a highly ritualized set of rules that dictate how each should be done.
“The French seem to place great importance on romance — the prelude — than Americans do… the French are more inclined to mystery,
the Americans to mechanics,” writes the author. Even the approach to
business is radically different in the two countries. While Americans use
rationalization to sell products, the French create an emotional bond with
the customer.
The French value beauty in everything from elaborate cakes to breathtaking landscapes to precise handwriting, and have the ability to “make
the most banal things beautiful.” Schoolchildren use fountain pens to
write and buildings are illuminated in such a way as to emphasize their
curves and angles. So when French men call out compliments to women
on the street, they believe they are merely pointing out something of
beauty, and the women feel flattered. In the U.S., this would be viewed
as an invasion of privacy at best and sexual harassment at worst, especially in the workplace.
The two countries possess differing attitudes toward infidelity. Americans
see it as a betrayal while the French view it as an acceptable way to hold a
marriage together when the romance in that marriage has faded. When the
Monica Lewinsky scandal broke, the French were appalled, not that Clinton
had an affair, but that he chose to do it with someone who they believed
lacked beauty and elegance. In a book published in France in 2009, a female
psychologist suggests that infidelity is natural for men and offers an “honor
code” for the loyal but unfaithful husband. Must pleasure be sacrificed at
the expense of loyalty? As Ms. Sciolino points out, the answers from advice
columnists in the two countries would be vastly different!
The release of the book coincided with two prominent U.S. sex scandals:
Anthony Weiner and Dominique Strauss-Kahn. Ms. Sciolino was sought
out for comments in television, radio, and print. On a PBS Newshour
interview, she illuminated the differences between French and American
attitudes toward extramarital affairs in light of the Strauss-Kahn arrest.
“Frankly, it’s not a liability for a politician to have had a lot of extramarital
affairs,” she explained. “In France, the fact that Dominique Strauss-Kahn
was rumored to have had a very active extramarital sex life wouldn’t have
been a factor in him being elected president. Policitians are expected to
be sexually vigorous and are praised for their virility.” In a CNN interview,
however, she stressed that Strauss Kahn crossed the line into criminality.
“The French know a crime is a crime.”
So put your feet up, pour yourself a glass of French wine, and prepare
to be seduced by Elaine Sciolino’s intriguing new book.

Your Top Diet Questions
We’ve Got The Answers
How can I control my cravings? What are the worst fast foods? Whether
you’re trying to lose weight, get in shape for swimsuit season or just
brush up on your nutrition knowledge and healthy up your diet, we’ve
got you covered. Your most pressing problems solved.
1. Is there one small diet fix that will help me lose weight?
“Yes. Stop drinking your calories,” says Walter Willett, M.D., chairman
of the nutrition department at the Harvard School of Public Health and
coauthor of Eat, Drink and Be Healthy. Fruit juices, coffee drinks and
regular soda are liquid calories that don’t yield much satiety, says Dr. Willett. A 12-ounce regular cola contains 110 calories; the same amount of
orange juice has 140. “Research also shows that we don’t compensate as
well for calories consumed in liquid form,” says Rachel K. Johnson, Ph.D.,
R.D., a professor of nutrition at the University of Vermont in Burlington.
In other words, we’re unlikely to eat less later to make up for these extra
calories. If weight loss is your goal, opt for low
or no-calorie beverages like tea, water, seltzer and
skim milk.
2. Are there any tricks to controlling a craving?
First you need to know what’s causing it. Often, plain old hunger makes us long for a particular food. “Cravings are a normal and natural
response to underfeeding yourself and can be
prevented simply by planning and eating enough
throughout the day,” says Katherine Tallmadge,
R.D., author of Diet Simple. To stay satiated, she
recommends eating three similarly caloric meals
and one or more planned snacks daily. If the craving lingers after making this alteration, it may be
emotionally based. Try distracting yourself for 20
minutes (the usual length of a craving) by chatting on the phone or taking a walk around the
block, says Lawrence Cheskin, M.D., director of
the Johns Hopkins Weight Management Center in
Lutherville, Maryland.
If distraction doesn’t do the trick, Linda Spangle, author of 100 Days of
Weight Loss, says you might have “head hunger.” Identify the food you’re
yearning for: Is it chewy/crunchy or smooth/creamy? If it’s the former,
there’s a good chance that you’re angry, anxious, frustrated, stressed or
resentful. Spangle associates a yen for smooth/creamy foods with “empty emotions” like loneliness, sadness or a lack of recognition. Ask, “What
am I missing in my life at this moment?” Whatever the answer, follow
up with the bigger question: “Will food get me what I need?” Once you
realize that eating won’t resolve your problem, you can focus on what’s
really eating you.

3. I love fast food, but I’m trying to eat more healthily. What
things should I avoid?
Eighty-six the cheeseburgers, fried chicken, fried-fish sandwiches,
french fries and meat-topped pizzas, says Michael Jacobson, Ph.D., executive director of the Center for Science in the Public Interest in Washington, D.C., and coauthor of Restaurant Confidential. One slice of Pizza Hut’s
Meat Lover’s Pan Pizza packs 330 calories and 18 grams of fat; Burger
King’s Triple Whopper with Cheese weighs in at 1,250 calories and 84
grams of fat. But if, alas, your belly’s aching for the Golden Arches, control your portions by ordering a small grilled sandwich sans the cheese
and sauce but with extra lettuce and tomatoes. Can’t live without pizza?
Opt for thin crust and vegetable toppings and you’ll save more than 150
calories and 12 grams of fat.
4. Do I need to cut back on salt if I don’t have high blood pressure?
It couldn’t hurt. A high-sodium habit has also been associated with osteoporosis; taking in more than 3,000 milligrams daily may interfere with
calcium absorption, which can weaken bones over time. And according
to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, most women consume
15 to 40 percent more more than the recommended 2,400 milligrams
of sodium per day (the equivalent of about one teaspoon of table salt).
To limit your intake, cut down on popcorn and cookies, frozen dinners,
canned soups and broths and bottled salad dressing.
5. My triglycerides were high at my last checkup. How can I lower
them?
Triglycerides are simply a form of fat. “They are as important as high
cholesterol (another type of fat) in women,” says Noel Bairey Merz, M.D.,
medical director of the Women’s Heart Center at Cedars-Sinai Medical
Center in Los Angeles. Left unregulated, these fats can contribute to atherosclerosis, a condition in which artery walls become thicker and less
elastic. When a blood test indicates that triglyceride levels are high (over
150 mg/dl), it’s a tip-off that they’re hovering in the bloodstream instead
of being stored in the body for energy. Losing weight, reducing alcohol consumption, quitting smoking and exercising regularly can all help
lower triglyceride levels.
6. I find it impossible to stop eating a sweet after just a bite or
two. Any tips?
Willpower is about timing. It’s best to eat treats when you’re full — say,
at the end of a meal — so you’ll be less tempted to binge. “Using sweets
like chocolate to alleviate hunger can actually create a craving for that
food,” says Barbara Rolls, Ph.D., a nutrition professor at Pennsylvania
State University and coauthor of The Volumetrics Eating Plan. Your brain
gets the message that sweets hit the spot and remembers it the next time
you’re hungry
7. Are organic foods more nutritious?
Possibly. Whether foods are produced organically (without pesticides,

herbicides and chemical fertilizers) or conventionally, “they generally
contain the same kinds and amounts of vitamins and minerals,” says
Mary Lee Chin, R.D., president of Nutrition Edge Communications in
Denver. However, a study published in the Journal of Agriculture and
Food Chemistry found organic corn and strawberries to have higher levels of phenolic metabolites, or disease-fighting antioxidants. It seems the
fertilizer used to produce conventionally grown foods may be enough to
disrupt a plant’s metabolite production.
8. Any strategies I can use so I won’t gain weight when I eat out?
Thanks to supersize portions and the liberal use of tasty fats like butter
and cream, restaurant meals can wreak havoc on a diet. But you can rein
in the calories by developing some ironclad policies, says Cathy Nonas,
R.D., director of the New York City Health Department’s Nutrition Programs. For instance, you might decide that you’ll eat just half of your
entree when you go to American and French restaurants, and a salad and
half order of pasta when you’re out for Italian. In Chinese restaurants,
your policy might be

to share one steamed
entree and one other dish with a friend. Other helpful tips: eat two appetizers (one should be low-calorie) instead of an entree, allow yourself
a glass of wine if you pass on the bread basket, and always order sauces
and dressings on the side. To increase the chances that you’ll adhere to
these guidelines, make sure you take into account what’s most important to you. If you really love dessert, for example, your dining-out policy
should reflect that.
9. Are there some foods that contribute to weight gain more
than others?
No matter where the calories come from, consuming more than you
14r-0/(*4-"/%80."/rJanuary 2012
burn will eventually cause you to gain weight. Some foods are easier
to overeat, however. High-energy-density foods, those that have a low
fiber or water content, take up relatively little stomach space, so you
may find yourself consuming greater quantities. In this category: white
pasta, meats, cheese and cookies. Since some of these foods provide
other nutrients, you needn’t purge them from your pantry. Instead, try to
concentrate on eating more low-energy-dense foods (fruits, vegetables,
broth-based soups, salads and whole-grain cereals with low-fat milk) and
you’ll fill up on fewer calories.
10. Are there any “super” foods I can have that aid weight loss?
“Dairy foods like skim milk and low-fat yogurt top the list,” says Michael Zemel, Ph.D., director of the Nutrition Institute at the University of
Tennessee. In a study of 34 otherwise healthy obese adults, those who
consumed three servings of light yogurt (for a total of 1,100 milligrams
of calcium) daily lost 22 percent more weight and 61 percent more body
fat than those on a low-dairy (500 milligrams of calcium) diet. Zemel
explains that a high-calcium diet — 1,200 milligrams per day — inhibits
the production of calcitriol, a hormone that “tells” cells to generate more
fat. Conversely, more calcitriol is released on a low-calcium diet, resulting
in bigger, plumper fat cells. But supplements alone won’t suffice; you
need to consume dairy foods. “Bioactive compounds in milk, yogurt and
cheese work with calcium to nearly double the effectiveness of fat burning and weight management,” says Zemel.
11. Diabetes runs in my family. Should I steer clear of sweets?
If you’re overweight and don’t exercise regularly, yes. Limit your intake
of simple carbohydrates, such as cookies, cakes, power drinks and soda,
says Fran Kaufman, M.D., past president of the American Diabetes Association and author of Diabesity. These foods can cause blood sugar
to rise rapidly and prime the pancreas to release insulin. Over time, the
consistent release of this hormone can pave the way for type 2 diabetes,
a condition in which the pancreas doesn’t make enough insulin and the
body’s cells don’t respond properly to the insulin produced. To prevent or
delay the onset of this disease, lose weight if you need to and work out
regularly, says Dr. Kaufman. Exercise helps metabolize excess circulating
blood glucose; weight loss helps your body use insulin more efficiently.
12. I’m a Java junkie! How much caffeine is too much?
Are you feeling jittery or experiencing insomnia or heartburn? If so, you
may want to go easy on the joe. “On average, most adults will notice no
side effects from caffeine at 300 milligrams or fewer a day,” says Herbert
Muncie Jr., M.D., chairperson of the Department of Family Medicine at
the University of Maryland. That’s the caffeine equivalent of roughly 28
ounces (or three and a half cups) of regular coffee. If you’re pregnant
or trying to conceive, “reduce your intake to one caffeinated beverage
a day,” says Lisa Mazzullo, M.D., an assistant professor of obstetrics at
Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago and coauthor of Before Your Pregnancy. Consuming too much caffeine may
increase your risk of low birth weight or miscarriage. O

The March of Dimes National Ambassador’s best
interests are currently focused on the next stage of
her career. Since All My Children was canceled in April
2011, the entertainment veteran is looking forward to
moving on and continually challenging herself. After
a successful stint on TVLand’s Hot in Cleveland,
Lucci is scheduled to return as arch rival to Wendie
Malick’s character. Lucci is taking her time
deciding on projects and reviewing options.
“I was so thrilled when fans wanted to see
me in primetime. I think it is really important
to set new goals for yourself, and realize
the value of taking yourself out of your

I always try to do, like when I made my
Broadway debut; to learn something
new and embrace exciting new
possibilities.”
In 1999, Lucci embarked on her Broadway
debut as Annie Oakley, in the revival of Irving
Berlin’s musical Annie Get Your Gun. To star in
a celebrated classic like Annie Get Your Gun,
requires voice range, increased endurance for
singing and dance routines eight times per week,
in addition to projecting your voice to the back of
a packed house. All things the Broadway novice had
to learn in just three short weeks. Not to mention, all
while still working on All My Children.
In preparation for the show, Lucci dove into voice
lessons with veteran voice therapist Joan Lader. Lader
can attest to Lucci’s perfectionist sensibilities but explains
the actress met every demand with grace and appreciation.
It was Lucci’s generosity to her family during September
11th that most impressed Lader.
“We didn’t know each other well, when September 11th happened,”explains Ladder.

huge accomplishment. Because of what was happening in the city, we couldn’t go
back to our apartment and my husband couldn’t get his clothing. Susan showed up
with a jacket for him. She thought of us, even during a huge
event in her life. I will always remember that.”
After a successful career on television, Lucci is mindful of
the future but cannot help but feel a deep sense of loss after
the cancelation of All My Children.
“I am a hopeful person by nature, but when a show is
canceled there is a whole mourning period. There were
all sorts of feelings of questioning my sense of self
worth and worth in the world. Also, my ability as a
performer,” acknowledges Lucci. “But, I realize that
was part of this whole process of healing. You can’t
let it shake you to your core. You need to hold
onto the positive things and continue to grow.”
With new projects in the early stages,
spending more time at home in Garden City
is first on Lucci’s list of to-do’s. Lucci has lived
in the same home since 1978. She raised
her two children there and now, her
grandchildren visit. Much like her lasting
role as Erica Kane, a life on Long Island
took Lucci by surprise.
“I thought we would move to Manhattan
right after we got married. But my
hometown is very beautiful, and sometimes
you take it for granted,” said the former
Dancing with the Stars competitor.“Garden City
is the kind of town that is multi generational. In
fact, my daughter has moved back. So did many of
their school friends and many of my school friends.
There is that sense of history and continuity in our
lives that gives a greater sense of security.”
Security is exactly what Lucci should feel after a career
filled with accolades as well as the admiration of her peers.
Despite the surprise ending of an era on television, it seems
that the perfectionist is learning to enjoy what life has to offer.

My Turn
by Jackie Clements-Marenda
50 is Not the New 40
Don’t Tell Me How I Feel
I don’t know who first uttered “50 is the new 40.” This statement is just a
myth that gained credence through media repetition. Perhaps, because it made
some women feel better about becoming the big 5-0, it’s rarely been debated.
However, my personal experience proves the 50/40 fable to be no more than a
dream. Fifty is what it is and, for me, it hasn’t been enjoyable.
During my 40’s I had a svelte figure, no cholesterol or blood pressure medications, no bifocals, no cataracts and no gray in my hair. I even got whistled
at – and not just by lifeguards who wanted me to move into shallower water.
Then I turned 50. Along with a slew of cards that were meant to humorously remind me that my life was more than half over, came the invitation
to join AARP. Solicitations from plastic surgeons and
requests to attend Botox parties filled my mailbox.
Lawyers send questionnaires advising my need for
a will. A local cemetery offered me a time-payment
plan on a mausoleum. My car and life insurance rates
jumped. A twenty-something year old hair stylist suggest I lighten my hair in an effort to not bring so much
attention to my emerging crow’s feet. I fired her.
At 50 I became in medical terms – a woman of
your age, as in “a woman of your age needs to address certain health issues that may, or may not, effect you.” Colonoscopy, bone density and stress tests
were recommended. I was warned to watch my salt
and sugar intake. An exercise safer that possible bone
breaking roller-skating was suggested. An arsenal of
pills – calcium, fish oil, vitamins – were added to my
daily routine.
Dental problems arose. During my youth – prior to
age 50 – I occasionally had a cavity. Now my gums
are receding and one tooth even became loose. Expensive periodontal work
became necessary. Routine dental appointments are now scheduled every 6
months instead of once a year.
Menopause arrived. Some women accept it as the bridge of change that
will lead to a better second part of a female life. I’m not one of those women.
Menopause is hell. Pure hell. I do not feel renewed, refreshed. I’m tired, sweaty,
bloated, cranky – all the time! I gained 20 pounds in one year despite eating
the same food and same size portions now as I did in my 40’s. Diets haven’t

worked, not even starving oneself. It’s all about the hormones, or lack of them.
The boobs I prayed for at 14 arrived now when I have no need for the cleavage. Their additional weight only adds stress to a back already beginning to
curve. I have nightmares about being able to play the part of Igor, sans special
effects, in the next Frankenstein movie.
Mood swings abound to the point that I sometimes wonder if I’ve suddenly
become bipolar. I have no sense of humor, especially when somebody jokingly
calls my hot flashes “Jackie’s little power surges.” Prior to entering the state of
menopause I thought the legal defense of “menopause made her do it” to be
a sham. Now I don’t consider this defense to be farfetched at all. Same with
road rage. I have a new understanding of why some people do what they do.
Nothing irks me more that to be dangerously cut off by a group of teens who
shout “Hey Granny!” at me as they speed away.
Socially, people view women at age 50 differently. I’m regarded as a cougar
despite the fact I have the same interest in dating a younger man as I do in
undergoing another colonoscopy. I’ve even had the displeasure of walking into
a bar and, upon being noticed, the band halted a Kings of Leon song and
substituted a classic rock song. Delivery men automatically refer to me Ma’am
instead of Miss. I’m offered a senior citizen meal discount by young waitresses
and waiters despite the fact I didn’t request it.
If I stop to flip through a clothing rack in the teen section of any department
store a salesperson will quickly approach to redirect me to the Misses section.
That’a insulting! I am well aware I’m not 18, but there are still some items I can
purchase from this section and wear without looking like a teen-wanna-be.
While I’m on the subject of clothing – I don’t want to dress like my 88 year
old mother! Yet the areas I’m referred to appeal to her age group, not mine.
Serviceable is the descriptive word that comes to mind. Is there no place for the
mature woman who is fighting to retain her former fashionable sense of style?
Designers take note!
In summation: If I had the necessary finances I’d have myself sucked, tucked,
pulled and stitched into a Barbie doll formation makeover. However, since I’ve
never won even a single lottery dollar, my body re-sculpting dream isn’t haaprning in the near future. So I accept who I am; a 50 year old woman who, despite
age related woes and stereotypical prejudices, wakes up each morning grateful
to be alive. O

Catching Up With Carol
by Carol Silva
A Losing Resolution That Won
I remember it started innocently enough – with another
Thanksgiving and another piece of pumpkin pie. And just a
little whipped crème – a personal favorite that reminded me
of Mom. So I had another. And the next day, another. That
2005 pumpkin pie seemed to open a floodgate of change.
Before I knew it Christmas was over, and I was outdoors
again, coaching my kids’ soccer teams. But somehow my
coaching pants had gotten a little tight.
Now, they were nylon – and I know nylon
doesn’t shrink. Apparently I was on a roll.
I surrendered to another few birthdays, another few pounds
and eventually to the next size up. Change had happened. Or
changes. I mean life was full and good, but I looked fuller than
I wanted. However, I was busy raising children, running a house
and working full time. I thought, “Well, it was a nice run.”
Until last January. My co-anchor Elizabeth Hashagen had an idea. (Inside info
– she’s also been a fitness instructor for almost 20 years.) She thought it would
be great if we went to the gym every morning when we got off the air. I
thought it would be great if she looked in the mirror and realized she was 3
months pregnant! But it was high school all over again. Peer-pressure. I signed
up for “a trial” the next day. It amazes me what you can do, especially if you
draft a work-out buddy. I went from avoiding a gym for 20 years, to working
out 3 to 5 days a week, with some hardcore spin classes.
It only took 3 weeks before I felt different – better. But guess what? By September I had gained 3 pounds! Elizabeth called it muscle. I called it muscle in
her head.
So nine months after Elizabeth’s pseudo New Years resolution for me, in September of 2011, I faced the grim reality that I also had to watch what I ate. I’ve
been an organic vegetarian since my twenties, but I’d never limited my intake.
In fact I’m the girl who’s taught other families how to celebrate
“Ice Cream for Dinner.” Seriously.
It’s taken about a year, but I’m back, and a dozen pounds
lighter. I hate to admit “Those People” are right when they say
it’s about tweaking your lifestyle. More activity and less junk
equal less junk in your trunk. I have more energy than ever. I
feel great!
I’m not advocating expensive gym New Years’ resolutions or
workout equipment that turn into clothes racks by St. Patrick’s Day. I’m just
saying, bad little habits rolled into something much bigger for me. Now good
little changes have taken me to a much happier place. And on those nights
when we do have “Ice Cream for Dinner,” I yank out the old coaching pants.
They have extra room these days. O
