Cosmetic Surgery with Cutting Edge Technology
by Stephen T. Greenberg, M.D.
Now more than ever, we can count on the latest, exciting technology
to help achieve the best possible cosmetic surgery results. We are each
confronted by the media with hundreds of alternatives to helping
improve our appearance, regain our youth and tone up our bodies. The
reality is that the true secret to maintaining a youthful look is paying
attention to the basic issues that you can control – getting adequate
sleep, drinking plenty of water, watching your diet and finding the time
to exercise. What many of us find, however, is that this quest for
beautiful skin and a beautiful body can be quite frustrating. We can help you obtain the
look that you are striving for by using the available advancements
in technology to assist you in attaining your goals.
uses a revolutionary cooling technology to reduce areas of unwanted fat gently and
effectively. Patients see noticeable, natural-looking fat reduction in treated areas within
two months. There is no downtime with CoolSculpting procedures.
One of the most exciting newer technologies available is the Artisan laser treatment.
This is a unique combination of “same day”, micro-fractional laser treatments that
provides total skin rejuvenation. This process is remarkable because of its unique ability
to offer the most complete array of laser/light based modalities, providing successful skin
resurfacing and tightening as well as reducing age spots, wrinkles, stretch marks and
acne scars.
Another avenue to consider when pursuing your desire to look
younger are “injectables”, which are quite effective in reducing lines
and wrinkles on the face, without surgery. Botox and other dermal
fillers are continuing to grow in popularity. Exciting other products
including Dysport, a wrinkle relaxer, and injectables such as Restylane
containing lidocaine, have expanded the market and increased the
options available to people seeking immediate results with significant
reductions in facial lines and wrinkles. As you consider improving your
appearance, consider achieving a younger and fresher look using these injectable products.

If you are interested in looking thinner and more shapely, consider
our ThinSmart package, a perfect combination of body contouring
procedures. SmartLipo is a laser-assisted liposuction system that offers a revolutionary and minimally invasive procedure for the removal of fat with less downtime and fewer side effects than
traditional liposuction. It is an excellent complement to Cellulaze®
which is the first proven procedure to get rid of cellulite permanently. VelaShapeTM is an FDA cleared device that effectively and safely contours, shapes
and slims the body by reducing cellulite and firming areas in as little as 4 treatments. The
combination of these procedures is extremely effective in contouring your body and producing a significantly slimmer appearance.
Dr. Greenberg also offers CoolSculpting® by ZELTIQ®, a body sculpting, fat-freezing,

Breast Surgery Combined with Tummy Tuck and/or Liposuction
by Charlotte Rhee, MD, F.A.C.S., P.C.
Many of my patients come to me seeking help with the changes that can occur after childbirth. Following childbirth, a woman’s breast can grow to uncomfortable proportions or just the opposite can happen. A woman’s breast can
actually lose volume and shrink, resulting in the breast appearing “deflated.”
Additionally, a large number of women come to me seeking help with the
post partum changes of their abdomen. During pregnancy the skin and abdominal wall muscles are stretched. Following childbirth, the abdomen can
protrude and the skin can be loose or sag. In some cases, the abdominal muscles can be so
weakened that the individual may look like she is still pregnant. Despite daily workouts including
sit ups and crunches, a tummy tuck may be needed to restore these muscles.
ing breast reduction. Both groups of women want to have breasts that are proportional to their
body size with the most natural result possible. In certain situations, a breast lift is also needed
to tighten lax skin. The laxity can be the result of pregnancy or weight loss. When a breast lift
is needed, I utilize the lollipop scar technique. A breast lift procedure is very similar to a breast
reduction. The only difference is that with a breast reduction, breast tissue is removed.
Combined Breast/Tummy Tuck and Liposuction Procedures.
Many of my patients who have breast surgery also have other procedures performed at the
same time. This allows for one surgery and one recovery. The most common combined procedures performed by Dr. Rhee are breast surgery, whether it is a breast reduction or augmentation,
combined with tummy tuck, also known as abdominoplasty. For those patients

Two Long Island Authors Write About Marriage
L
ong Island authors S.B. (Susan) Lerner and Rachel Eddey have written
captivating books about marriage, but the similarity ends there: one book
is a novel set in 1930s Poland, the other a memoir about recent events.
Susan Lerner’s novel, A Suitable Husband, is a compelling and superbly
written page-turner that takes place in 1930s Poland and shatters the
myth of quaint little “shtetls” populated by Orthodox Jews. “In fact,”
says the author, “there were many politically active young Jews, often
non-religious, determined to live their lives free of discrimination. That
S.B. Lerner meant either fighting for their rights in Poland or
starting over in Palestine. They banded together into
youth groups, and were organized, intelligent and
resourceful. They defied their parents, established
kibbutzim–communal farming communities–made
up their own rules and invented their own moral
code.”
“A Suitable Husband explores love
in a time of heightened tensions,”
says Ms. Lerner. “The love between a
mother and her children, a passionate
first love, and a gentler, more mature
love. There is also the kind of love
that exists among people who share
a dream; in this case, the dream of
Palestine.” The story follows Bianca
Lieber, a young woman caught between the old ways and the new, exploring her womanhood and weighing her marriage options. Does she
choose Alex, a stable but old-fashioned young doctor introduced to Bianca by the local matchmaker, or does she allow Wolf, a daring and dashing
Zionist leader to capture her heart? With its engaging characters, appealing subplots, and fascinating historical background sprinkled throughout,
A Suitable Husband is a highly satisfying read.
Susan began writing fiction when she was single and working at a high
pressure job in Manhattan. Seeking a creative outlet, she followed her
muse and enrolled in a short story workshop. She wrote her first story in
a fit of inspiration, and when her teacher called it a ‘little gem, ” Susan
was hooked.
A few years later, by now married and a mom, living on Long Island
and working only part time, Susan decided to write a book

the question. Before Rachel could respond, a woman let out a shriek. All
eyes followed the shrieker, who turned out to be none other than Sarah
Jessica Parker. She and her co-stars were all witnesses to the proposal.
Thus began Rachel Eddey’s wild romp trying to plan the perfect Manhattan wedding … in just four months! Running of the Bride takes readers
through the entire insane experience, and the result is an honest, laughout-loud account. Rachel is not only a gifted storyteller and a superb
writer, she has an engaging sense of humor—and timing—that keeps
readers glued to the page.
After going through three agents in two and a half years, with nobody
able to sell the book, Rachel decided to represent herself. She made a
promise to herself: “If I didn’t get a contract by my 30th birthday—just
three short weeks away—I’d shelve the whole project. It was an insanely
unrealistic goal, but I didn’t know what else to do.”
So she sent out queries to her top 20 editors and hopped a plane to
Ireland to escape. While overseas, she received a call that her seemingly
healthy father–her lifelong writing mentor–had suffered a heart attack
and needed emergency bypass surgery. She rushed home, dropped her
suitcase off at her parents’ house and was standing in the driveway about
to go to the hospital when she opened an email from her dream editor—
and he was making an offer. “Years of trying—and crying—and the offer
came ONE HOUR before my dad woke up from his life-threatening surgery,” recalls Rachel. “He’s told me many times that it was this news that
aided his recovery.” Her book launch party was one year to the day after
her dad’s heart attack and she was thrilled that he was able to attend.
Since the book came out in May, Rachel has appeared on television and
radio shows, taught a memoir-writing class at the Brooklyn Book Festival,
and has been a Skype guest at book clubs.
Rachel shared some additional news: she is expecting a baby in several
months. If we’re lucky, she’ll write about that experience also, and we’ll
definitely have another winning book in our hands!

Know Your Options for Preventing Heart Disease
J
onathan Dashiff, MD has seen countless numbers of patients at risk for
heart disease. Despite his having significant success in reducing patient
risk factors and saving lives, he has never prescribed a statin medication.
Dr. Dashiff practices Integrative Medicine at Linchitz Medical Wellness in
Glen Cove. Integrative Medicine blends conventional mainstream medicine with evidence-based alternative treatments. It focuses on the whole
person, the cause of disease, the relationship between practitioner and
patient and, most importantly, on lifestyle behaviors that impact general
health and wellness. (Integrative medicine practitioners can be found by
searching the Institute of Functional Medicine website at www.functionalmedicine.org under the Functional Medicine Resources link.)
The primary aim of an Integrative physician regarding cardiac health is
prevention, with an emphasis on the use of drug-free therapies and appropriate testing procedures to address risk factors and to avoid the harmful
side effects of many medications. While Dr. Dashiff believes that there is a
place for medication in the treatment of disease and will not hesitate to use
them when appropriate, he feels that statins serve no purpose in reduction
of heart disease risk. Dashiff maintains that, when it comes to cardiac risk,
“You need to look at particle size, and statins don’t effect particle size.”
Dashiff is referring to the sub-components of Low Density Lipoprotein,
known as the “bad” cholesterol or LDL. LDL is subdivided into small apolipoprotein B particles, which are the culprits in causing plaque build-up
in arteries, and large apolipoprotein A particles, which have a protective
effect. Standard cholesterol testing doesn’t provide a breakdown of the
ratios of these particles.
“Our basic cardiac profile has 14 components,” says Dashiff. “To say
you have a cholesterol level of 250 or 190 means nothing.” Recently,
Dashiff saw a patient in his office who was on two statin medications and
had a total cholesterol of 130. “In conventional medicine he was a superstar.” But when the lab measured his particle size, they found a different
story. His small particles, which should have been below 117 according to
the lab’s definition of normal, were at 3000 and his large particles were
less than 0.7, with normal being above 9. “So those two statins had his
cholesterol level at 130,” says Dashiff, “and yet that was an illusion as to
how he was really doing cardiac-wise.”
Meyer Abittan, MD, a board-certified cardiologist whose practice is located at St. Francis Hospital in Rosyln says, “Statin drugs can have serious
side effects. And although the media has marketed that everyone should

the quick fix.
The following is a list of supplements to consider when
asking your doctor about drug-free treatments for cardiac
risk factors:
Vitamin D – According to the Framingham Offspring
study, you are at increased risk for heart disease if you
are deficient in vitamin D. Maintaining proper vitamin
D levels can regulate your blood pressure and optimize
the function of your arteries. Furthermore, if you are deficient in vitamin D and are taking a statin, you have a
higher chance of experiencing muscle aches.
Niacin – Niacin taken in high doses has been found to
increase your levels of HDL, the “good” cholesterol. It also
decreases the small particles of LDL and lowers triglycerides. High dose niacin is available by prescription and
should not be taken without a doctor’s supervision due
to side effects that include rapid heart beat, flushed skin,
itching, gastrointestinal distress and liver damage. A recent
study of patients taking a high dose prescription niacin,
combined with two statin medications was stopped early
because of an increased risk of stroke in the patients tak-

ing Niacin. The study did not test patients taking niacin
alone or in combination with other supplements. Although
more research will be needed in this area, you should not
stop taking niacin without discussing it with your doctor.
Fish Oil – Fish oil , which contains omega-3 fatty acids,
has been shown to lower blood pressure and triglyceride
levels and it can also regulate the rhythm of your heart.
Despite the fact that a recent study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association concluded that
fish oil supplementation did not significantly reduce risk
of heart disease, it may still be effective in combination
with other supplements and further research is needed.
Red Yeast Rice – Red yeast rice contains monacolins,
which are related to statins and performs like a statin
medication with minimized side effects. As with statins, Dr.
Dashiff explains, it will not address your LDL particle size.
Some red yeast rice brands have been found to contain
citrinin, which can be harmful to your kidneys, and so you
should be careful to take this product with the guidance of a
practitioner who is familiar with a particular brand.
CoQ10 – CoQ10 is an essential supplement needed
by your body that, some research says, may be depleted when you take a statin medication or red yeast rice.
Taking CoQ10 may reduce statin-related side effects.
B-Vitamins and Folic Acid - Dr. Abittan suggests taking a multivitamin that includes vitamins B6, B12 and
folic acid, which can lower your levels of homocysteine,
another factor whose elevated levels, according to the
American Heart Association (AHA), may point to increased risk of coronary heart disease and stroke. Despite
this possibility, the AHA does not recommend folic acid
supplementation but rather recommends that this vitamin
be obtained through eating a balanced diet that includes
citrus fruits, tomatoes, vegetables and grain products.
Despite the fact that vitamins and supplements are available over the counter, when it comes to heart health, it
is best to consult your doctor before taking them on your
own. Your doctor can advise you about supplements, the
combinations and dosages that are right for you, and
about the varying quality of available brands.

risk of diabetes. In fact, in January of this year, a study published in Archives
of Internal Medicine found an association between statin medication use in
postmenopausal women and an increased risk for Type 2 Diabetes.
Dr. Abittan orders about five Apo A1:B ratio tests a week. He believes that
it is the best predictor of heart disease and necessary for primary prevention;
the screening of individuals with risk factors such as a family history of heart
disease, overweight or obesity, smoking, and metabolic syndrome.
This past April, the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists
supported the use of ApoA1:B ratio testing within its recommended
guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of dyslipidemia (is an abnormal

ing non-pharmaceutical options. Most important to Dr. Abittan, however,
are lifestyle modifications. “I have seen them work,” says Abittan. However
in secondary prevention, once a patient has had a cardiac event, such as a
blockage or a heart attack, “If I don’t prescribe a statin medication it would
be considered [as] malpractice based on current accepted guidelines.”
But Joseph Wiesel, MD, a board certified cardiologist at North Shore LIJ
Health System and assistant professor of clinical medicine at Weil Cornell
School of Medicine, feels that statins have turned around the treatment of
heart disease over the past few decades. “In the beginning of my practice
I used to see 50 year-olds coming in with cardiac infarctions. Now the
average age is 85.” Dr. Wiesel feels that the major change brought about
by statins is the lowering of patients’ average cholesterol levels. He does
not order Apo A1:B ratio testing in his office due to his view that some of
the recommendations regarding this test have not been substantiated by
research. “Lipidologists who do it are spinning their wheels,” says Wiesel.
“Some of the recommendations have been put into question.”
Dr. Wiesel still sees progression of disease in his patients that are taking
statins, but, most often, he can attribute this to other risk factors. Regarding
non-pharmaceutical supplements, he used to use several of them including prescription niacin, fish oil, and B-vitamins but has been recommending
them less often because of recent studies that have brought their efficacy
into question. “Statins haven’t wiped out coronary disease,” says Wiesel,
“and the answer doesn’t lie in supplements. It lies in lifestyle changes.” O

Happily
Drescher
S
by David Lefkowitz
ix years ago, when LONG ISLAND WOMAN
last checked in with comic actress
Fran Drescher, she was enjoying
good health post-cancer, starring in
the semi-autobiographical sitcom,
Living with Fran, and making it her mission to urge
women to be more proactive in their wellbeing.
When we spoke in late 2012, Drescher had virtually
the same agenda, albeit with different details. She
has now spent 12 years cancer free, she’s into the
second season of her TV Land comedy, Happily
Divorced, and her book about surviving illness,
Cancer Schmancer, has blossomed into a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting early
detection.
“If everyone were diagnosed in Stage 1,” Drescher
notes, “almost everyone would live. The reason we
lose loved ones to cancer is almost always due to
late-stage diagnosis, which is really unconscionable
in a country such as ours. We need to transform
patients into medical consumers who recognize
the early warning whispers. Half the time, the tests
aren’t even on the menu at the doctor’s office. But
if you catch it on arrival–95 percent survival.”
When I express skepticism over the unrealistic
nature of Drescher’s view that “the best cure
for cancer is to not get it in the first place,” she
counters, “We have to start living a preventive life.
We’re exposed to so many toxins and chemicals
and electrosmog and radiation that one out of
two men are now getting cancer, and one out of
three women. For the first time in U.S. history,
children today have been predicted to not live as
long as their parents. Babies are being born prepolluted with hundreds of chemicals found in the
umbilical cord. American women’s breast milk has
the highest percentage of flame retardant of any
women on the planet. So the jig is up.
“Once you wake up and smell the coffee, it’s
hard to go back to sleep,” cautions Drescher.
“So at Cancer Schmancer we have a bi-partisan
bill in Washington to help consumers purchase
carcinogen-free products for food, personal care,
cleaning and gardening. We invite manufacturers
– at their own expense and through an approved,
third-party lab – to prove they have a product that,
by today’s standards, is considered carcinogenfree. If they can prove that, for a limited time they
can adorn their packaging with the government’s
`C-Free’ label. Then the consumer doesn’t have to
go to M.I.T. to understand what the ingredients
are. Manufacturers don’t want to kill us; they just
want to sell us. So rather than try to go through
regulation, we’re skinning the cat from another
direction, which is, logistically, much easier to
accomplish.”
The actress also trumpets her organization’s
Trash Cancer initiative, which urges families to
make more informed choices about “what you
put in, on and around you in your home. It’s the
most toxic place and also the place you spend the
most time. But it’s also the place we have the most
control over.”
Continues Drescher, “It’s an ongoing practice with
constant learning and adapting. Don’t pressure
yourself to do it overnight. No need to throw
things away that you paid hard-earned money
for. But each time you finish using something, try
something safer and more toxin-free.”
Asked about her own health habits, the former
Nanny star replies, “I eat almost entirely organic;
pesticide-free, chemical free and, when available,
organic and grown from local, sustainable
farms. I use deodorant – not antiperspirant. The
ingredients in my deodorant are what would grow
in your grandmother’s garden. My toothpaste is
completely free of fluoride and chlorine. It has
baking soda and zinc – stuff like that, because the
mouth is the gateway to disease. And the lotion I
use is just virgin coconut oil that I put on my body
from head to toe. I take off my face makeup with
it, then wash my face, then reapply it as a whole
body moisturizer. You can also cook with it, smear
it on bread.”
Before I can even reference the old Saturday
Night Live joke about a floor wax also functioning
as a dessert topping, Drescher is way ahead of me.
“They’re now saying coconut oil helps reduce your
risk of dementia!” she opines. “I’m pretty moderate
and don’t like to be excessive, but some people
even eat a spoonful of it a day as a prophylactic.
I drink coconut water, which is extremely high in
electrolytes and potassium.”
On a more global level, Drescher notes, “The
planet and its inhabitants are all one big living
organism. If you don’t respect that and see its
inter-connectedness, you’re not really existing in
the way you were meant to. You’re in your own
space, and it’s gonna come back to bite you on the
ass. Everything matters!”
It is no coincidence that Drescher can speak with
the fervor and quotability of a politician – she
nearly ran for a Senate seat in 2008. “I threw my
hat in the ring when the appointment for Hillary
Clinton’s seat was under consideration,” the actress
recalls. “Then I was urged to actually run because I
didn’t get the appointment. A lot of people on both
sides of the party line felt my brand of politics was
fresh, honest, up-front and clear. I had the voice of
the people, and people would have crossed over
to support me.
“But because Happily Divorced came along,”
continues Drescher, “it was an opportunity for me
to continue to be in the public eye and still be able
to share the platforms I’m passionate about. I can
be active in Washington without being thrown to
the wolves or having the pressure to constantly
raise funds for my own re-election – which is a
huge part of an elected official’s day. I don’t have
to answer to that. I just have to answer to my
conscience and my heart and hope that people
within the sound of my voice would agree with
me.”
Had she run for office, Drescher would have made
healthcare a major priority, of course. “I definitely
supported ObamaCare.,” she avows, “and I’m very
happy it got passed. As with all legislation, there’ll
always be playing with it and putting addendums
to it. But in the meantime, it’s on the books, and
we needed it. There are too many people with
nowhere to go, so they end up in late-stage illness
in emergency rooms. The World Health Organization
considers us to be number 37 in healthcare. We are
a sick nation! We’re doing something vitally wrong.”
For contrast, Drescher points to countries with
a national healthcare system. “They shift into
prevention mode because it’s cheaper to be healthy.
Once we do that, you are gonna be amazed how
the consciousness of America begins to change.
I see the landscape already changing as Cancer
Schmancer plants its seeds. People come up to
me because they recognize me, and they say, `I
made that doctor’s appointment when I would
have otherwise avoided it.’ `I switched up my act
at home because I want to reach a preventative
life.’ It has to be a unilateral kind of blanket with
everybody moving in the same direction.”
Not surprisingly, Drescher’s democratic ideals
also extend to civil rights. “Of course, I’m a big
supporter of gay rights, but not just gay rights.
It seems like I’m more vocal about them because
that particular demographic has become well
organized and is moving in a very positive way.
But I’m also vocal about any minority that’s
being marginalized, including women – who are
not really a minority but a majority.”
Certainly, Drescher has earned the right to
weigh in on feminist issues. Successfully battling
uterine cancer, surviving the trauma of a 1985
home invasion and sexual assault, and moving
past the breakup of a 20 year marriage has
given her long-range perspective. As she told
LONG ISLAND WOMAN in 2006, “I would say that I’m
certainly very compassionate towards other
people’s pain now . . . I have a much higher
barometer now of what I will endure – or what
I won’t endure – in terms of negativity.”
This, no doubt, includes turning a negative
– the split from her husband, Peter Marc
Jacobson, whom she’d met in high school
– into a positive: they co-created Happily
Divorced. “It’s wonderful working with my
ex,” Drescher says. “We were always great
creative writing and producing partners
because we’re very symbiotic. But the
marriage was crumbling, and we needed
to have space from each other. Neither of
us ever developed as individuals; we were
codependent, intertwined people who
were not completely expressing who we
were within the relationship. Peter became
increasingly controlling, and I just found
myself being suffocated in a relationship I
was outgrowing. So I really felt the need to

bust out.”
Jacobson and Drescher separated three years before their 1999 divorce,
which was followed later by Jacobson coming out as a gay man. “He didn’t
want to break up the act and was very upset with me,” recalls Drescher. “He
wouldn’t even talk to me. But then one of the silver linings of the cancer was
that when he was told – he had already lost both parents to cancer, and he’s
an only child – he burst into tears, and all the anger melted away. All that was
left was the love. We started rebuilding a friendship from that point forward.
We put it on the new show and reinvented it. So now we’re in a good place and
are very, very close. We consider each other family in every sense of the word.
We care for each other and love each other deeply. We’re definitely soulmates
and love working together.”
Working with people she knows and trusts is important to Drescher, which
is why you’ll see familiar faces from The Nanny pop up in her later projects.
For example, Charles Shaughnessy and Lainie Kazan both had recurring roles
on Living with Fran, while Renee Taylor plays a neighbor on Happily Divorced.
“Lucille Ball always had an ensemble of actors you began to recognize over
and over again in all her different series,” explains Drescher. “When you like
working with people, and they’re great at what they do, it’s a pleasure to work
with them again. Plus, I think with sitcoms, in particular, the home viewer has
a certain security, a safety, a pleasure
in seeing familiar faces.”
Single and dating, Drescher,
55, says that although she
often finds herself going out
with younger men, she’s
just started pushing the
age envelope. “My last
boyfriend, a year ago,
was nine years younger.
Not that I’m seeking
that out, but I find that
older guys get a little
stodgy. It’s hard to
find one that’s
cool and wants
to have fun. And
remember, I

desperately trying to recapture a youth I felt I had blown on one person who
wasn’t right for me. But I’m more open to (older men) now. I can date a guy
in his fifties and think, `Oh, he’s attractive,’ whereas I never used to see the
attraction at all. So I’m really maturing in my taste in men.”
Asked if being born Jewish and hailing from Queens somehow influenced
her comic style, Drescher replies, “Jewish humor is what Western comedy is,
at its root, based on. Even black comics are basically doing Jewish humor, but
they’re doing it through their own ethnicity. The way it’s structured; the selfdeprecating thing – all of that had origins in Jewish theater.
“I never really did stand-up,” Drescher points out. “I did sit-downs on talk
shows, which were very well-crafted stories that had a solid punch line at the
end. `Cause I’m a writer. Early in my life – I was just out of high school – I got
a small part in Saturday Night Fever, I got a few commercials, and that led to
a bigger part in American Hot Wax, which spun into a movie career for many
years. I was doing television pilots, but they never got picked up. Eventually, I
did a short-lived series called Princesses, a few years after I’d done Spinal Tap
and Doctor Detroit and those movies. But The Nanny clearly put me on the
map. I was lucky because there was this niche when I was starting out. Funny
people from New York were very `in.’ We had The Fonz, we had John Travolta
and the Sweathogs. I fit right in with that whole scene.”
Despite all the upbeat activities in Drescher’s life, she admits the past several
months have been a challenge. “I had a hellish year,” she says. “My parents
were both sick, and I was sick, and Peter hurt himself. We were all in the
emergency room at one point or another in the first six months of 2012. So
now we’re all on the other side of that, and things are better.”
Indeed, even in tough times, the bright side inevitably tends to grab Drescher’s
focus. “The best example of that is when I wrote Cancer Schmancer,” she
offers. “During the first draft, I was bitter, I was angry, and I was hostile
towards the medical community – because it took me two years and eight
doctors to get a proper diagnosis. But I kept rewriting the book. I wrote four
drafts longhand. And I kept remembering funny things, even though at first,
I didn’t let that into my frontal lobe. But the more I remembered funny things
that happened during the depths of despair, the more I began to heal and find
my voice again. It became a great life lesson: side by side with pain lies joy.” O

and by the 1970s everyone in America was wearing them. In the 80s and

jeans now come in various fits, washes and styles, including skinny, tapered,
straight, boot cut and flare. Statistics tell us the average American woman
owns seven pair of jeans…and on Long Island, the number goes even higher.
Jeans for baby boomers keep on truckin’ and there’s
even a very popular brand called, “Not Your Daughter’s
Jeans” (NYDJ) that claim to flatten your stomach, lift
your butt and allow you to wear one size smaller -- a
winning combination in anyone’s book!
According to Daniel Miller amd Sophie Woodward
in their book, Blue Jeans - The Art of the Ordinary,“The
eternal appeal of jeans is just that they reflect us and
the lives we’ve had in them.”
Talk About Jeans
Long Island Woman talked to a few women about the
brands they wear now and how they feel about them.
Ellen Gordon of Dix Hills has been wearing Joe’s for several years. “I have a few different styles and wear them
almost every day. They’re very comfortable, flattering and
move with me. I think jeans have evolved over the years. It
used to be you wore them for ‘dressing down.’ Now they’re
more stylish and it’s acceptable to wear them, even in more
upscale restaurants.”
“I pick jeans that make me feel good,” said author and
publishing consultant Carol Hoenig of Bellmore. She likes
the designer look of Calvin Klein and Donna Karan, but
since she wears jeans all the time, she also goes with Banana
Republic and GAP. “I don’t go for a specific brand because
they tend to change every season. I like the skinny jeans and
boot cut. My favorite pairing is with a crisp, white long sleeve
shirt or silk top.”
“Jbrand, Koral, DL1961 and Adriano Goldschmied

Comfort Is Key
Jean fabric has changed over the years. “It used to be the standard jean
was almost 100% cotton,” continued Brittany. “Now, almost every brand
has some sort of stretch. DL1961 makes their denim with a 360 lycra 4-way
stretch, so the jeans mold to your body. They don’t stretch out or get baggy. While denim used to just range from light to dark washes, now denim
comes in colors, prints, leather, jeggings, high waisted, low waisted and
mid-rises. There’s so much to choose from!”
“Comfort, comfort, comfort! The first thing women say when they come
in is, ‘I need a pair of jeans that are comfortable!’ Secondly, they want a
denim that’s flattering to their figure. Most women want a denim that is a
little higher or mid-rise. They also look for versatility…something they can
wear running around during the day with their kids, and also turn into an
appropriate nighttime jean,” added Brittany.
“It never occurred to me stop wearing blue jeans,” said
Margaret Garone of Commack. “I never transitioned out
of them. My go-to-brand is from White House/Black
Market. Since I wear them every day, I find a style I like
and buy them in bulk. I like this brand because ‘it fits
and forgives.’ And these jeans don’t make me look like
a teenager.”
“What’s interesting,” said Margaret, manager of a national retail store chain, “is that our uniform code recently
changed from slacks to any type of jeans with a black
top. I think corporate headquarters felt that jeans made
their sales people look more casual and approachable.”
Carol Fishman of North Hills has a variety of brands in her
wardrobe, from Not Your Daughter’s Jeans to Ralph Lauren
and GAP. She wears them several times a week, even to
work at a travel agency. “In college, jeans were a part of
your body. Today, I think subconsciously, jeans are a link to
those carefree days. When I wear them, it takes me back to
that youthful time.”
Interior designer Marcia Lilling, Roslyn remembers when
jeans were called ‘dungarees’ for knocking around in back in
the 60s. Today, she chooses Chico’s, Talbots and Escada and
says they’re perfect when she goes to construction sites.
“For a more sophisticated look, put on a pair of dark indigo
jeans with a belt, blazer and sweater and you’re dressed.”
“In college, I was more interested in the labels,” said
Marcy Ruderman, a special education teacher from Dix Hills.
“Now I go for jeans that fit and feel good. I have more
than two dozen pair – everything from DKNY, Buffalo and
Seven to Lee’s. I can wear jeans to school on casual Fridays,
which is great when it’s colder. And I love this year’s colored
jeans – purple, white, black and white. When I want to wear
something dressy, my black jeans and a pair of boots will take
me anywhere in style.”
As for this writer, my favorite pairing is dark blue jeans with
boots and a black turtleneck sweater. My kids asked me recently, “Mom, are you always going to wear blue jeans?” I
looked at them and said, “I sure hope so!” O

Catching Up With Carol
by Carol Silva
Seeing the Forest Through our Fallen Trees
L
ife on Long Island is now somewhat measured as “Before Sandy” and
“After Sandy.” Months after the hurricane, the reminders are everywhere, including thousands of tree carcasses left along our roadsides.
They were stately, beautiful, shady trees of summer. Some stood four
or five stories tall. It took them decades to get there. Some estimate we
lost a half million trees. Oaks, white pines, maples. Many so healthy they
hung onto their leaves into late October. But Sandy’s 70 mile an hour
winds and 90 plus wind gusts knocked those regal old ladies with the
power of a speeding train. They tore holes in roofs, pulled down thousands of miles of power lines, leaving millions of us freezing in the dark.
They even injured or killed some of our neighbors. That’s got a lot of folks
anxious to cut down more big trees, now.
But professional horticulturist Peter Schlick says don’t panic. The weakest trees are gone now. Especially because weather experts’ predict we’re
not likely to see another Sandy for a long time.
Here’s how Sandy caused so much damage according to the
At our home,
owner of Greenlawn’s Schlick Design Group; Sandy’s steady
trees also mark winds rocked the trees back and forth. Then the gusts knocked
them over. Countless oaks fell, especially north of the L.I.E.
Schlick explains that oak root systems are deep but not wide;

toppled too, with their year round needles. That makes them
a big target without a strong backbone. And flowering pear trees hold
their leaves longest. More targets. Plus, notice the sidewalks heaved up
by trees? Those trees grow along curbs and curb footings go two feet
into the ground, confining the root systems.
On top of it all, the snow storm weighed down branches on lower slung
trees like dogwoods, dragging branches to the ground.
Peter Schlick says do be concerned about large trees leaning towards
a house, especially if the trees around them fell with Sandy. Now there’s
nothing to break the winds of the next big storm. A tree ten feet from a
house might actually lean on a house if blown down, but a tree 20 feet
away would fall with more force. Schlick also says check closely for cracks
that could run up and down a tree’s trunk.
He recommends calling a tree expert before bringing in the chain saws,
because stately old trees give shade and character and life to a property.
At our home, trees also mark our family’s life. Our big magnolia was a
baby tree when it was planted at our daughter’s Christening. That tree
has grown like our children. As we’ve watched our children closely, now
we’ll watch our trees a little closer too. And pray for safe harbor for all of
us in this new year. O

Raisin’ Cane with
Jasmine Guy and the
Avery Sharpe Trio
“Raisin’ Cane - A Harlem Renaissance Odyssey,”
comes to Staller Center, Stony Brook University.
The Harlem Renaissance was a pent up explosion
of brilliant prose, poetry, politics and music of
African-Americans. The words and thoughts of
Langston Hughes, Countee Cullen, Zora Neale
Hurston, WE Dubois, and many others are woven
into a panoramic theatrical narrative in Raisin’ Cane,
starring Jasmine Guy, actress and NAACP Image
Award Winner.
With a superb original score by Jazz Master bassist/
composer Avery Sharpe, the music and words
become one. A special feature of Raisin’ Cane are
visuals, photos and paintings of the key artists and
of the period.
When: February 23, 2013, 8 pm
