North Central Companion The Official Newsletter for the North Central Region of Canine Companions for Independence® Autumn 2010 issue: Meet Cardinals’ Pitcher #86, Celebrating 35 Years of Independence, Online Holiday Shopping, Team Training Yearbook, Puppy Raiser Notes, and Around the Region H Meet Cardinals’ Pitcher #86 ans Smith first learned about Canine Companions for Independence when he was 10 years of age. He grew up in a military family and moved around the country quite a bit. Hans was deathly afraid of being alone. His mother could not even leave the house for a minute to retrieve the mail, his sister had to sleep in his room with him. He and his mother traveled from Iowa for Team Training. When Hans returned home with his Skilled Companion Dog, his sister went back to sleeping in her own room and his mom could leave for short periods at a time. Hans knew that he didn’t need to be afraid when he was with Dager. He realized that if anything happened to him, it would happen to Dager, too. “Dager probably wouldn’t like that” and she would be there with him. Hans noticed that people approached him differently when he was with Dager, instead of other children asking him what was wrong with him, they would ask, “how come you have a dog?” Dager died when Hans was 15 years old and he wasn’t sure if he wanted to get another Service Dog. After some thought, Hans realized the importance of having an assistance dog and came to Team Training in 2001. He was placed with Successor Service Dog Ryce. During the initial phases of Team Training, Ryce was not Hans’ first choice for a new companion. He changed his mind when Ryce jumped into his lap when the trainers announced she was being paired with Hans. “Ryce is everything I wanted in a Successor Service Dog, she understands what I feel and does things for me that I almost don’t have to ask her to do.” Hans’ assistance dogs have given him accountability. “I can’t take care of myself, but I can make sure that Ryce is taken care of,” which gives Hans responsibility he would not otherwise have. Hans is aware that Dager, and now Ryce, rely on him for grooming, toileting, veterinary care and food. In return Ryce is especially helpful by picking up dropped items and opening doors for Hans. Hans is a proud advocate for Canine Companions for Independence and does presentations so the public can see that “people with disabilities are just normal people.” He speaks about Cerebral Palsy, which he has had since birth. Hans says that if it was just him talking to a group, he would probably put them to sleep, but because he has a dog, “the audience stops starring at you and they actually listen.” Hans is also affiliated with the Association for Disabled Virtual Athletes (ADVA). The work Hans does with ADVA will ultimately help to provide others in wheelchairs the ability to feel like they are physically playing baseball because the game is so real. PlayStation developed a character modeled after Hans, #86 the pitcher for the St. Louis Cardinals. Hans plans to graduate from Brigham Young University-Idaho, in April of 2011 with a Broadcasting and Public Relations degree. When Hans was asked what his plans are after graduation, he said “Oh geez, do you have another two hours?” Hans wants to get married and have children, work for a Fortune 500 company, and work in public relations or for a PR firm, maybe even CCI. Additionally, Hans has toyed with the idea of going to law school, but his ultimate career choice would be as a sports broadcaster, specifically for baseball. Canine Companions for Independence is fortunate to have Hans as a graduate and friend. If you are ever watching or playing virtual baseball, be on the lookout for #86 of the St. Louis Cardinals. He is quite the player and quite the young man. If you would like to support future graduates, please consider a donation to Canine Companions for Independence. If you would like to help us celebrate, consider throwing a Canine Companions for Independence Birthday Party in your area with friends or colleagues. Ask guests to bring a donation to CCI as a birthday present. A party can also be a great way to share information about CCI with people who do not know about us and to get people interested in volunteering, donating, and possibly even planning their own party. If you are interested in hosting a 35th Birthday Party, please contact Laurel Marks, Development Director, at [email protected] or call (740) 548-4447. Who knew holiday shopping could be so rewarding? It’s getting to be that time of year when the malls are packed with holiday shoppers fighting for parking spots and weaving through jammed aisle ways. If you want to avoid the mess and skip the 20-minute wait at the cash register then please consider visiting Canine Companions’ online shopping at http://www.shop.cci.org. This website will link you to hundreds of retailers, including: Target, Macy’s, Best Buy, and many more. Each retailer linked through the Canine Companions’ online shopping site will donate a percentage of their sales to CCI. Not only do you get to avoid the crowd, but you can help support our mission while completing your holiday shopping in the comfort of your own home. It’s as simple as the click of a button. For other ways to help Canine Companions visit http://www.cci.org. Estate Planning Imagine feeling so bad due to your disability that you don’t want to get out of bed, even on the garden island of Kauai, Hawaii. That is the challenge faced by Maureen (Mo) Nuccio-Hiraga. That is until she was teamed with Sager, a yellow male labrador-golden cross. “Sager is bringing me back to life,” says Mo. “The bond is so amazing.” When Mo and Madeleine Hiraga-Nuccio returned to their home in Kapaa, they talked about their experience during Team Training and wondered how they could give back to Canine Companions for Sager. Mo and Madeleine have decided to leave their home on Kauai though their estate plans to Canine Companions to be used as the organization sees fit. Mo and Madeleine are excited about their decision and want to share their plan with the Canine Companions community. If you would like to learn more about how you might support Canine Companions through your estate plan, please contact Dave Bonfilio at [email protected] or at 1-866-224-3647. “Sager is bringing me back to life.” —Mo Nuccio-Hiraga, CCI Graduate & Planned Giver Maureen Nuccio-Hiraga and Service Dog Sager The North Central Companion Autumn 2010 Newletter Test.indd 3 3 11/17/10 10:18 AM Team Training Yearbook May 2010 Graduates Team Training Lunch Providers May 2010 Mary Freund Betsy Jones Kansas City Chapter Marty Marlatt Amy McMahill Jenny Ringo Sally & Larry Rosine Virginia Russell Faith & Skip Walzak Leslie Young August 2010 David Facilitator: Lisa Skilled Companion Dog Irina II Columbus, OH Jean Nakaerts Marseilles, IL Ron Gionet* Service Dog Keanu Etobicoke, ON Donna & Neil Strawhorn Vergas, MN Mary Jane Kulwicki & Bonita Cochran Facility Dog Yogi III Dayton, OH Vanessa & Richard League Peoria, IL Teresa Keathley Facility Dog Dorian Frankfort, IN Nancy & Marty Smolensky Buffalo, MN Bonita Cochran Bobbe Fulton Liz Hafner Judy Jenkins Wendy Jenkins Kansas City Chapter Mary Jane Kulwicki Karen Pettus Jenny Ringo Roxanne Shull Walzak Family Leslie Young Veterinary & Professional Support Best Friends Animal Clinic Jodie Miller & Bev Downing Facility Dog Hemma III Lancaster, OH Diane, Katherine, & Jeanine Schulz Antioch, IL Erin Facilitator: Kathy Skilled Companion Dog Kanika Bloomington, IN John Connolly Chicago, IL Neil Napier Facility Dog Graham II Buckhorn, KY Beth Schroeder Kalamazoo, MI Hunter Facilitator: Barb Skilled Companion Dog Gilly II Stewartville, MN Dee & Tim Appelman Stevensville, MI Rex Riggs, D.V.M. Judy met with several chapter directors to discuss their support for CCI. Judy and Jean also staffed a warmly received CCI information table at the convention. GFWC comprises of local women’s clubs from around the country and throughout the world, all united by a dedication to community improvement through volunteer service. CCI is fortunate to be one of the organizations that GFWC supports. Since GFWC groups are all over the country, try contacting a local GFWC Chapter and volunteer to do a presentation at one of their chapter meetings. You never know what doors will open! All the North Central Region volunteer chapters and groups have been busy over the summer. Some of the summer events are listed below. As you read about the various types of things our volunteers are doing, we would like to challenge you to try some of these ideas in your respective areas.
