Local choir wins hearts and minds in Durban contest MANDLA MAHASHE A choir comprised mostly of high school pupils has done Gugulethu and surrounds proud as they were crowd champions at a national competition. Joyful Harmonies, representing the Western Cape province, outsang 10 other rivals to be crowned the best choir in the standard category of the Old Mutual National Choir Festival. The competition was held last weekend at the Durban’s International Convention Centre. They faced stiff competition from the 10 other groups but their rendition of Swati song Bayethe Mandela saw them win over the judges on Saturday. On Sunday they performed a German piece titled Der Stern for which they came second but were voted overall winners of the category. According to senior member Simo Sithandathu the win was testament to the amazing choral talent in our townships. “Most of the members of this choir are high school pupils with raw talent that have proven they have what it takes to compete at the highest level. We are a relatively new choir and it’s really fantastic to see ourselves performing at this level,” said Sithandathu. The group pocketed R 74 000 prize money which would be dearly welcome by the fi- nancially stricken choristers. The win was a far cry for a choir that only made it to fourth position out of 10 choirs in the same category in their first attempt in 2012.. Monde Mdingi, founder of the choir in 2009, said they had experienced such profound confidence before the competition that the announcement of their victory was a foregone conclusion. “We were so confident the results just confirmed what we already knew,” he boasted. Even before the competition, the choir had won praises way above their immediate competitors, but not wanting to rest on their laurels, still they gave it their all. . Sithandathu said that they believed that the win would motivate more youngsters to join the group. That is a good thing, he says, but it represents another challenge for them. “As many of our members are young and unemployed we struggle to raise funds for travel expenses. Even as we toured to Durban it transpired that our sponsored bus was too small to carry us all for the trip,” he said.. He said one of the biggest challenges they face was lack of funds and support from local businesses. He said that they hope that the win will spur other sponsors to come on board.
