But with the militant groups now at their weakest point in decades, this extraordinary country is enjoying a travel renaissance. After battling civil turmoil for decades, it has now emerged as one of South America's hottest destinations, filled with cosmopolitan cities, lush mountain valleys, rich culture and history, amazing architecture, sultry rhythms of the Caribbean coast and the simple warmth and hospitality of its people. Sharing borders with Venezuela, Brazil, Ecuador, Panamá and Peru, Colombia is the fourth largest country on the continent and it is the only South American country to boast two coastlines on the Pacific and Caribbean. Optimism mingles with opportunism, education with exploitation, as investors and travelers set off a resurgence of tourism. For people who live there, it's a chance to rebuild their economy and connect to a curious and sympathetic world. For the experienced traveler, it's a chance to see amazing locations once closed to the outside. In this light, we've selected Colombia where reforms, reconstruction, and the passage of time have combined to create accessible and rewarding experiences for travelers. Colombia is enjoying a tourism boom, thanks to the buzz about its friendly locals, colonial and pre-Columbian heritage sites, and a dining scene that combines gastronomic sophistication with outrageous fun (i.e. at Andrés Carne de Res, Bogotá’s runaway cult favorite steak-house-meets-dance-club). Sightseeing highlights include the gold museum in capital city Bogotá... Cartagena's baroque 16th-century buildings... the bohemian Caribbean coast... eco-tourism on the Rosario Islands and the pristine coast of Tayrona National Park... and jungle hikes to the Lost City in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta mountains (six centuries older than Peru's Machu Picchu). Even Medellín, a former drug cartel stronghold, is emerging as a destination, with Miami-worthy art galleries and boutique hotels. It is important to know the backstory... Colombia earned its scary reputation in the 1970s and '80s, as drug cartels in the cities of Medellín and Cali gained power, sparking random violence, kidnappings and assassinations. Many of the cartels collapsed in 1993 after the death of Medellín leader Pablo Escobar, and economic and political reforms begun in 1999 have lifted nearly half the population out of poverty. Meanwhile, cocaine production has decreased by more than 80 percent in the past decade. This exclusive multi-part journey begins with touch down in BOGOTÁ, the country's groovy capital and commercial backbone. This bustling metropolis, located at an elevation of 8,660 feet on a mountain-rimmed plateau high in the Andres, is home to 9 million people and fast becoming one of the biggest and most happening cities in the world. The city is a mix of old and new; trendy and traditional. There is loads to do here both day and night – a dazzling array of churches, colonial mansions, stately buildings and museums, most of which are free, the best include the National Museum, Museum del Oro (rated the best Gold Museum in the world) and Police Museum which includes a delightful guided tour in English and provides a great insight into Colombia's recent troubles. Don't miss the Ciclovia every Sunday from 7 am to 2 pm when cars are banned from many of the main streets which quickly fill up with bicycles, roller-bladers, skateboarders and joggers. Next Stop: MANIZALES. The coffee region for many people is the heart and soul of Colombia, its cultural epicenter. With every turn, a spectacular panorama greets you – from rolling hillsides of fertile coffee plantations, to plunging valleys, colorful mountain towns, and vibrant tropical flowers nestled amongst the foliage. Rural life continues as it has done for centuries, harvesting coffee, plantains and many other fruits in this lush and fertile land. MEDELLÍN is next. Forget everything you have heard about it; it’s probably old news. The city was the headquarters of one of the country’s most notorious and infamous drug Cartels of Pablo Escobar and was once the most dangerous city in the world, but what the international media forgot to report was the cities remarkable turnaround. Those days are long gone and the city and its surrounding area are very safe to visit with great shopping, nightlife and interesting artwork. Medellín is the second largest city in Colombia and regarded as one of the most important in business, politics, and fashion and nightlife. Its growth has been impressive over the past ten years, and the advance in the security situation has been such that Medellín is now regarded as one of the safest cities in South America. Medellín is vibrant, contemporary and offers a plethora of fine restaurants, bars and stunningly beautiful people. To sit at a coffee shop or bar and watch the people of Medellín walk by can easily take up an entire morning. Final stop: CARTAGENA. Located on the Caribbean coast, it has a fabulously preserved old town with a mix of Latino, Caribbean and African cultures. Formerly the gateway port used by the Spanish, the city used to store the riches plundered from the interior before they were transported back to Spain. Cartagena’s rich history, diverse culture and energy captivate every visitor, allowing them a glimpse into the past and a chance to relax in superb surroundings. Optional Post Extension – SANTA MARTA. About a 4-hour drive east of Cartagena lies one of the best beach towns along the Caribbean coast. It’s near stunning Parque Nacional Tayrona where the adventurous head to the lost city (Ciudad Perdida), a close second to Machu Picchu with almost no tourists. "Travel is more than the seeing of sights; it is a change that goes on, deep and permanent, in the ideas of living." – Miriam Beard Teresa Beall Expeditions 2724 Pillsbury Road – Chico, California 95973 CST License # 207267040 530.342.6999 (o) – 530.342.6994 (f) www.TeresaBeall.com California License # OG82158 OPTIONAL TOUR EXPERIENCES BOGOTÁ Ciclovia with Locals: Every Sunday for the last 35 years, Bogota has closed about 75 miles of city streets to regular traffic. The streets fill with local bikers, runners, skaters, walkers, food vendors and other hawkers. Open spaces offer free yoga and aerobics classes. It's a hugely popular event and people from all over the city participate. Includes: bilingual assistance, bike rental and helmet. Colors/Flavors of Paloquemao: The Plaza de Mercado de Paloquemao is one of Bogotá’s most important markets for fruits, vegetables, meat, fish, dairy, flowers, and much more. It was founded in 1946, and has been in its current location since 1967. The market is divided into different outdoors and indoors sections: Fruits, vegetables, meat, fish, flowers… The most interesting is the outdoor flower market, but you must get there early (by 8:00 a.m.) to catch the vibes and the morning colors. Enjoy the indoor part of the market for a local breakfast including some of the freshest fruit juices you have ever tasted. Includes: bilingual guide and assistance with transportation. TBE Grab Bag: (4-10 pm; $100 pp) – Sign up blindly… half of the fun is the anticipation. Includes food and drink. MEDELLÍN Paragliding: Fly in Medellin, surrounded by an amazing landscape and beautiful waterfalls and city views. Located 50 minutes away from the city, the mountain area brings ideal conditions (excellent thermals, XC potentials and afternoon valley releases). Fly accompanied by an experienced and professional paraglide pilot. Security is high with a back protector for the passenger, an emergency parachute, helmet and everything needed to make the flight more enjoyable and safe. The flight lasts 20 to 30 minutes. Accessible to people of all ages without restriction, and no prior knowledge required. If you have never done this (or even if you have) it is a “must do” for your bucket list. Includes: bilingual guide and assistance with transportation, an experienced professional and licensed pilot who will tandem each flyer, and then lunch with three beers (you just might need all three beers when it is all said and done). CARTAGENA Rosario Islands: An all-day tour by boat to the Archipelago 'Islas del Rosario' located 45km southeast (approximately one hour boat ride) from Cartagena bay. The national park is surrounded by coral reefs and lapped by clear blue waters and is the natural habitat for a large variety of marine fauna. Three ecosystems thrive here: coastal lagoons, the mangroves surrounding them and tropical forest. Once you arrive in “San Pedro de Majagua” island, you´ll have plenty of free time for snorkeling (mask, snorkel and fins available for rent) and relaxation on your own. The only programed activity is a delicious lunch prepared by the island locals. Includes: bilingual guide and assistance with transportation to/from the pier, shared boat ride to/from the islands, and a lobster lunch. "Travel is more than the seeing of sights; it is a change that goes on, deep and permanent, in the ideas of living." – Miriam Beard Teresa Beall Expeditions 2724 Pillsbury Road – Chico, California 95973 CST License # 207267040 530.342.6999 (o) – 530.342.6994 (f) www.TeresaBeall.com California License # OG82158 San Basilio de Palenque: San Basilio de Palenque is a small town located 60km from Cartagena (an approximate one hour’s drive along the “Vía de la Cordialidad” on the way to Barranquilla). Recognized by UNESCO, the town’s name comes from the Palenques, communities of escaped slaves from the colonial period of the XVII century. This community has survived in San Basilio with their practices, customs and traditions intact. It’s like time has stood still. They retain heavy African influences in their daily routines and in their Palanquera tongue which blends elements of Spanish with the Bantu dialects of Africa. Upon arrival in Palenque, you’ll meet a family who will teach you about the local customs and local way of life. Palanquera women will teach you how to carry fruit in a head basket while walking, and you’ll have plenty of time to walk around the community and listen to tales of religious beliefs and customs. Includes: bilingual guide, transportation, lunch and folklore show. Salsa, Salsa, Salsa: “Dude, if you wanna meet local girls you gotta be able to dance!” The atmosphere at Café Havana Salsa Club is pure Old Havana, touched with amber lights and walls covered with black and white pictures of legendary Cuban singers, rum flows while salsa band swings. It offers a mixed crowd of locals and tourists, drinkers, dancers and musicians – a perfect place to get in touch with the local culture around salsa. You’ll arrive before the doors open to general public to learn basic salsa steps by a professional dancer in a private class, and then get ready for a night full of salsa and mojitos. Includes: 90-min lesson, entrance fee, and 3 mojitos (then no host drinks) – club is within walking distance from hotel! http://cafehavanacartagena.com Organic Mud Bath at Volcan del Totumo: Supposedly, aside from being a crazy experience, the mud inside of this 65 foot volcano contains sulfites, phosphates, and magnesium which have curative properties that apparently cure acne, ulcers, rheumatism, and arthritis. Due to the density of the mud, bathers don’t sink. Afterwards, you’re led down the hill to bath in the natural reservoir. Includes: bilingual guide and assistance with transportation, entrance fee, and lunch/snack. NOTE: Bring your bathing suit, towel, camera, cash for gratuities for the “scrubbers” and “washers”, and your fun attitude. Don’t bring your jewelry – you’ll never find it if it falls off and it will get filthy even if it does not. The ladder to reach the mud bath is narrow and slippery! SANTA MARTA Scuba and Snorkeling: We need to organize a custom plan, based on those interested in scuba diving and those wanting to snorkel. The best PADI certified dive center in the area is the Poseidon Diver Center (www.poseidondivecenter.com). Tayrona Park: We need to organize a custom plan, based on the interest of the majority. There are several options… hire a driver to transport us and then explore the jungle, river and beach on our own… hire a driver/guide to guide/explore with us… book a package to Tayronka (an ecological reserve where you can visit an original Tayrona heritage settlement, and then float in inner tubes down the river to the sea in search of howler monkeys, toucans, macaws, snakes, etc.) Preference?
