Foreword
Those who are unfamiliar with Hutterite colonies and their schools
often envision the one room school house environment associated
with pioneer times. Many may assume that the teaching and learning that occurs there is a reflection of the same era. In reality, Hutterite schools are modern, well equipped buildings where skilled,
certified teachers provide engaging and meaningful opportunities
for learning to students in multi-grade classrooms. While the students may dress differently and have a different cultural background than most public school students, it takes spending only a
short period of time with them to understand that children are children, no matter where they go to school.
Working within the unique cultural environment of a Hutterite colony provides both a challenging and professionally rewarding experience for all staff. Colonies in the Interlake School Division are
committed to working with staff to ensure a successful school experience for all students. They are welcoming, hospitable communities that value the dedication and commitment our staff make to
their children.
The following information is intended to offer school division substitutes, clinicians and visiting staff a general awareness of some of
the cultural beliefs of Hutterite people, an understanding of the
structure of Hutterian schools, and some of the details specific to
each building. For further information, please feel free to contact

6 A Brief Introduction to Hutterian Education Culture The values and attitudes adopted by the Hutterite communities are deeply rooted in their historical experience and interpretations of the Bible, and consciously in their cultural heritage which is also per‐
vasively religious. Hutterites believe in the common ownership of goods (Acts 2:44‐47). They work and live communally in Bruderhofs (colonies) of about 100 people. While their clothing and gender roles are considered conservative and traditional compared to soci‐
ety in general, they are very technologically advanced communities that operate large farming operations and diverse manufacturing businesses. Since coming to North America from Eastern Europe in the late 1800's, the Hutterites have established 471 colonies in the United States and Canada, with 107 colonies located in Manitoba. Eight of these colonies can be found within the Interlake School Di‐
vision. School Structure Hutterite children, like all other children in Manitoba, receive pro‐
gramming and instruction based on provincial curricula. Hutterites, however, have been granted the right by our province to have their children attend school within their own communities. Some schools have the same name as their colony, others have a name that is completely different from the colony name. Colonies provide and maintain the school buildings, while staff and supplies are funded by the local school division. In the Interlake School Division there are approximately 235 Hutterite students in grades K‐12, and 15 FTE certified teachers working in eight schools across the division. On the colonies, these teachers are referred to as “English” teachers, a term that Hutterites use to identify anyone who is not a Hutterite. All teachers teach in multi‐grade classrooms, often based on early years, middle years and high school groupings. 7 Hutterite children are confronted with learning three languages. A Tyrolean dialect , Hitterisch, is learned in the home and is used mainly in oral communications. German is learned before and after a regular school day and is used mainly in the church and in written communication. English is learned in “English” school and used in business communication and with people from outside the colony. Students enter English Kindergarten speaking very little English. Al‐
though instruction in provincial curricula occurs in English, it is ac‐
ceptable for students to speak in their first language to achieve meaning. On a typical day , English school begins after students have had an hour of German school, which is taught by an appointed colony member. English school typically runs from 9:00 am to 3:30 pm. The students get a short break at 3:30 p.m. and then have another hour of German School. Religious Content and Cultural Awareness in English School All English schools in Hutterite communities include the recitation of the Lord’s Prayer in daily opening exercises, and some may also read a Bible story or passage. Beyond these, no religious content is in‐
cluded in English school. Certain topics in the curriculum are in con‐
flict with Hutterite culture and religious beliefs, and are therefore excluded from instruction. As well, the degree of “worldliness” var‐
ies from colony to colony. For example, some colonies allow stu‐
dents to access the internet, view movies and take photos. Others do not allow any of these. Programming in each school is done with a conscious awareness and respect for these beliefs. Dress Code While Hutterites have very specific beliefs about dress for colony members, English teachers are not asked to wear specific types of clothing. However, most colonies ask that school staff, especially women, dress modestly: no bare arms, skirts above the knee, or low cut blouses. 8
Religious Holidays
ISD Hutterian Schools operate on a parallel calendar to ISD Public Schools.
Beginning and ending dates of the school year, statutory holidays and some
Admin/ PD are the same. Hutterian schools, however, co-ordinate as many
as eight Admin/PD days with the Hutterian religious holidays. The number
of days and the dates change from year to year, depending on the dates of
the Christmas Break, and the date of Easter.
