BETWEEN OURSELVES
From Fr. Cyprian
Year of Faith.
“Porta Fidei” or the “Door of Faith” the Pope’s apostolic
letter is the foundational document upon which hundreds
of study sessions, literature and plans of action are
based. It would be a mistake to ignore this document
while trying to understand and observe the Year of Faith.
Here then are some of the salient points of “Porta Fidei”.
The Pope understands that our faith is like a door which
we should pass through every day and while doing so,
deepening our relationship with Jesus and all our brothers
and sisters. There are two ways to achieve this: firstly to
understand the ‘content’ of the letter and secondly to find
ways to ‘act’ on the content. “To rediscover the content of
our faith that is professed, celebrated, lived and prayed
and to reflect on the faith is a task every believer must
make his own”. It is interesting to note how this brief
sentence contains the entire summary of Catholic faith. It
all begins with the ‘content’ of faith. What precisely are
the truths I believe in? Where do I get them from? Is the
content of my faith a person or just a set of truths? The
most complete and systematic content of our faith is laid
down in the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Whether it
is the Baltimore Catechism or any approved book about
Catholic faith (and there are hundreds of them out there)
the ‘content ‘ is available for us to pick up and read.
It is not enough to ‘profess’ the faith or to say “I believe
in God, I pray to Him” as many Catholics do. Professing
faith in God is something that even the devil does,
according to St. James. True faith does not stop there. It
is ‘celebrated’. All true believers gather Sunday after
Sunday to celebrate their common faith and the special
relationship their faith has inspired in them with God and
with one another. You would have to suspect the faith of
those who say, “I have a strong belief in God but I do not
believe in community worship”. You can be very sure that
those who do not celebrate the Eucharist most likely do
not believe in other sacraments either. Throughout our
history of salvation it is clearly seen how God did not just
ask the people to believe in Him but brought them
together on a regular basis to common celebrations with
words, songs and rituals.
Another element missing from the faith of the devil is his
faith does not make a difference to his life. His faith does
not make him a loving or morally good person because of
his faith. That is what the Pope has in mind when he says,
(faith) ‘lived’. True faith can hardly be hidden. Its power
cannot but influence one’s behavior and life-style. Is that
why people of Antioch, seeing those early Christians said,
“See how they love one another?” One cannot have the
true faith and not be morally good. If faith is a relationship
with a good, loving and benevolent God then every
believer will want to be “perfect as your heavenly Father is
perfect”. Christian faith, which is fundamentally biblical,
ought to draw from the moral ethics of the Bible contained,
in its primal form, in the Ten Commandments and
presented in a positive and complete form in the
Beatitudes of Jesus. (Someone said they should be called
Be-attitudes).
‘Living’ one’s faith also means ‘acting’ upon it. This act is
our response to God’s work in our lives. It is the decision
(s) we make based on the love we have experienced from
our heavenly Father. We ought to remember that acting
upon our faith does not mean seeking our own salvation
but influencing others in such a way that they are on the
way to salvation. It is part of being a ‘believer’ that we
draw others into the ‘celebration’ and ‘living’ of the true
faith. In other words the ‘door of faith’ is one we pass
through, not as individuals, but in a procession of those
who are united in what their beliefs, morals and worship. A
BMW Christian is a complete Christian.
Would love to hear from you.

WHOLE COMMUNITY CATECHESIS
Reflection: Baruch comforts Israel, in exile, with the
surety that God will lead them “in joy by the light of his
glory…” Paul expresses his joy as well at the growth of
the “gospel” of Christ in the Philippians. This joy is again
reflected in John’s proclamation of the “forgiveness of
sin” and that all will “…see the salvation of God.”
Question of the Week: As we reflect and meditate on
the Incarnation of God in our world, can we do so with
joy in our hearts?
Resolution: We are at all times a people of joy for we
have the sure knowledge that God is with us. The song
Oh Come, “Oh Come Emmanuel” expresses this joy
clearly. No matter the troubles they faced Baruch, Paul
and John all proclaimed a God’s message of joy to the
people of God.

Youth Ministry News
From Fr. Bill
I want to thank all those people who helped make our
Confirmation Retreats in November successful.
First, I want to thank the sponsors of our second year
candidates for demonstrating by their presence in the
retreat how important being Catholic and being Confirmed
is. Just today someone called the rectory to complain
about our questioning whether their infant can be
baptized… let’s see… neither parent has bothered to
receive their first communion, nor confirmation, nor
bothered themselves about getting married in the church…
if the faith means so little to you… how can we expect the
child to be raised in the faith? Sacraments and being
Catholic are not some stamp you get on your passport as
you go through a country to show you’ve “been there, done
that.” They are a way of living in this world. I am thankful for
the sponsors’ example given that being faithful does
require love, time, and sacrifice.
Second, I would like to thank our Youth Core Leaders for
their efforts on making the Confirmation 1 overnight retreat
a success. Their witness talks, skits, and leadership have
given a good foundation to our 50 year one candidates. By
the way, our Youth Core Team with 27 members is larger
than many other parishes’ youth ministry.
Third, I would like to thank our adult leaders who worked
with the Youth Core Leaders to both help them prepare
for…and then to chaperon during the Confirmation 1
overnight retreat.
“Going into this retreat, I wasn't very sure what to expect.
I supposed that it would be a lot of lectures and few
activities. Yet I was proven wrong from the beginning. It
was an incredible experience where we played a lot of
games and had a lot of fun. There were talks that made
me question who I really was and how was I going to better
my relationship with God. We discussed about how every
person wears a different "mask" in specific situations--for
example we tend to act differently with our family and with
our friends--and how we as individuals can discover how to
be true to ourselves instead. I feel that my point of view
about life was changed in this retreat and I will carry this
experience with me as I continue my high school years.” –
candidate.
“It was great if you already knew people. Their friendships
made me feel alone. The skits and adoration were
amazing.” – candidate. (I appreciate the courage shown in
this comment which challenges us to help ALL of our youth
to know that the church is their HOME and they are always
welcome.)
¨ Sunday, December 9th is a Lifenite.” This evening is a
Confirmation 1 requirement.
¨ Sunday, December 16th is an Edgenite. The theme is
“The Christmas Story.” Families are welcomed to
celebrate this evening.

During the school weeks of Advent, several special events
are on the calendar. On December 3rd, the first trimester
mission focus on The Archdiocese of Los Angeles Adopt a
Family Program ended with Teddy Bear Day as we sent
hundreds of stuffed animals, lots of collected candy, and the
money raised through various events to Los Angeles with
Monsignor Terry Fleming. Our 8th grade students will go to
The Cathedral during this school week to assist in the
preparation of boxes for the families receiving items donated
by schools and churches throughout the Archdiocese.
During Advent, the students and staff meet weekly in
Biedermann Hall as 8th grade students lead us in prayer.
Students in kindergarten, first, and second grade are
practicing for the annual Christmas Program under the
direction of Mrs. Elaine Lyle and every class will have a
Christmas party before we leave for the two-week school
vacation celebrating Christmas and the New Year!

Necesitamos ayudarlos a
encontrar al Señor quien El solo llena nuestra existencia
con profundo sentido y paz.”
¿De quien es esta tarea? "La iglesia existe para
evangelizar".
