*Before you start, make sure to read sections “Before You Start” through
“Additional Cover Options” to ensure a successful result
What you need to prepare
1- White board or lamp as a ”fill” light
2- Fabric for yourself as outfit
3- Black background
4- Window
5- No need for fan, so turn it OFF.
6- Outfit for your child/toddler *See section below “What your toddler
should wear”
* For more details see section “What you need to prepare for most
settings”
This setting includes a full shot of your toddler, and only your belly in the
frame, although you can include your face as a variation of this pose. Even if
your toddler is too short to reach your belly, try to avoid bending down for her
to reach. It is so cute when the little ones stretch up on their toes and lift their
little hands to touch the belly.
What your toddler should wear
A little girl can wear either a piece of fabric wrapped around her, or a casual
cotton dress. The color depends on the fabrics you are wearing. If you are
wearing light colors, have her wear light colors as well. Remember, if your
intention is to have these shots in black and white, you do not need to match
the color, only the tone (dark, medium or light). If you are wearing white, your
toddler can also wear yellow, light pink, etc. These colors would all be similar
in tone.
For your boy, dress him in pants to match the tone of your outfit or fabric, and
no need for a shirt. Everyone, of course, is barefoot.

Action
Turn your body about 45 degrees towards the window, so your belly gets some
window light. Make sure the white board is facing the window on your opposite
side, at a 45 degree angle. *See diagram.
You can place your hands on the belly, hold your child's hand or wrap your
arms around her body.
The advantage of not including your face in this picture is that you can engage
your child in a conversation which will distract her and eventually lead her to
doing what you want most—kissing your belly, hugging you, sticking her finger
in your belly button, etc.
If you would like to include your face in the picture, remember to look at your
child, and not at the camera. Try to keep the conversation with your child to a
minimum, so that the person behind the camera will not snap all the shots with
your mouth open…oh, and don’t forget...relax and exhale. :)
Ti p s f o r t h e p e r s o n b e h i n d t h e c a m e r a
Even though the mom is situated at a 45 degree angle to the camera, the toddler
should be facing the window. If he is facing his mom, you will be seeing only
the back of his head. Make sure the reflector board is at 45 degrees in the front,
to open up shadows in the child's face. If needed, bring in a lamp or turn on the
light in the room, to have less contrast. If you are composing a full shot with the
mom's face in the frame, make sure that her hair is away from her face and that
she doesn't look too far down in a way which hides her face.
