The Chamber of Commerce and Industry, whose task is to
promote the movement and flow of capital in the Republic of
Slovenia, is conceived as a "megastore". What was involved in this
project was the rehabilitation of the institution's offices housed in
a strictly rationalist lowrise building, and the addition of a series
of semi-public amenities (restaurants, library, lecture rooms,
exhibition areas, archival reading room). Project attempts
explicitly to do away with any barriers between the public,
semi-public and private features which are all present in this
hybrid design. By retaining the huge public forecourt, the
programme along the existing building is verticalized, thus giving
it a new façade, designed like boxes piled on top of each other.
Fitted between the two fronts, as if the public forecourt had
been suddenly straightened, is a vertical hall, espousing the
principle of continuity and interaction between the two parts of
the programme.

.
The path for visitors and guests through the public grounds of the
office exhibition building Arcadia lightwear is conducted in eight
sequences, which differ in time span and manner of effect they
have on the visitor. Why conductance? Almost like in a movie, all
elements effecting senses and stimulating certain experiences like volume, space orientation and inclination, material
treatment, light and sound intensity - are planed in sequences.
On his way through the building, the visitor experiences eight
different effects in eight different sequences: approaching the
building - floating of the black box effect; entrance - depth
effect; entering reception room - light towers effect; in the
reception room - 900 seconds of the Arcadia lightwear effect;
approaching the gallery - photocell effect; the gallery - 90
seconds of the Arcadia lightwear effect; on to the terrace - fusion
of natural and artificial light effect; terrace - effect of openness
and airiness.

Copova ulica 40

The Optical Wall of the Dom/Mueller department store main
façade is a smooth vertical surface. Its optical effect changes
with the angle and the distance of viewer's perception thus
attracting his glances. The optical effect is also subjected to
varying sunray exposure. On a cloudy day or on a clear day
afternoon the interference between the inner and the outer
glazing and the texture of the solar shades defines the image of
the façade. The interference on a blue-white surface mollifies
the boundary between the sky reflection and the image of the
buildings facing it. The reflections are at its peak on a clear day
at noon, bringing about a feeling of dematerialized façade. In
the night time the optical effect is reversed: due to illumination
the presence of the wall is mainly felt in the surroundings and
through the wall layers we can observe the sales offers inside the
department store.

Mercator Shopping Centre
Address
Industrijska cesta 6
5000 Nova Gorica
Slovenia
http://www.mercator.si/en/
.
Circulation - technical block of the Mercator centre in Nova
Gorica is a soft container placed in the redesigned warehouse
halls. All vertical communications (escalators, two staircases,
lifts and freight elevators), technical utilities and air conditioning
are placed in a block. All customers leaving the parking lot pass
through the block on their way to the shopping centre. Within the
block, there is an attractive interior area wrapped with the
Matrix Enfolder. The structure of the Matrix Enfolder must have
the ability to assume the diversity of the exterior and the interior
conditions. The Matrix Enfolder is thus a unified system which
undergoes local modifications due to the conditions imposed on
the interior or exterior side. Like the vacuum packing of
merchant goods where the wrapping assumes the shape of the
product thus reducing its volume, so does the the design of the
three etaged technical-communicational block gravitate towards
reduction of used inner space.

Drogerie Markt
Address
Litostrojska cesta 48
1000 Ljubljana
Slovenia
.
Business and warehouse premises of the DM cosmetic chain will
inhibit the renovated business and warehouse premises of the
former fork-lift factory in the Litostroj industrial complex. The
generic office building is separated from the warehouse building
by a long narrow space in between, transformed into a reflected
patio. This is where a deformed reflection of the façade
"superstudio" grid, surrounding the office building, appears on the
reflective wall of the warehouse building across the patio's
hanging garden. Unchanging, abstract grid, completely disguising
the proportion of the building, becomes the background for the
changing events within and around the building. The grid, being
neutral, intensifies the perception of changes: a break on the
patio, work in the office, at day and night, seasonal changes in
nature around the building. Even the slightest change becomes
noticeable thanks to the neutral character of the grid.

Fountain Solkan
Address
Trg Jozeta Srebrnica 6
5250 Solkan
Slovenia
.
The fountain lies on red asphalt in the centre of the square. The
surrounding mountains and the river generate the shape, placing
and waterflow over it. It measures 9m in length, 3.75m in width
and it is 1.75m high. It is formed by two binding concrete shells.
Water is sprayed on it from a nearby waterspout. It flows over the
concave surface, looses its power and drifts over the convex
surface into the gutter. The water creates diffraction and
reflection of light. The sound of water is constantly present. The
water covered surface twinkles before your eyes. The landscaper
assigns landscape characteristics to the scale of an autonomous
object. The fountain waterflow is much alike the river flow over
similar relief - the landscape. The landscaper simulates activities
of the visitors in the manner of the surrounding nature. You can
sit on the fountain brim. You can lean on the wet surface of the
fountain to soak your back. During rain showers you can hide
beneath it.

Tus Shopping Centre
Address
Kidriceva Ulica 30

Slovenia
http://www.tuscc.si/O-nas/Poslovne-enote#celje
.
Large shopping malls - to which, following the Euro-American
example, various entertainment, sports and business facilities
come to be attached - are being built everywhere in Slovenia.
Most of these structures could hardly be considered architecture
if architecture is understood as something more complex than
four walls and a roof, whose sole purpose is to provide an
enclosed space. There are, however, exceptions. This building,
located on the approach road to Celje, is constructed of
prefabricated concrete elements and has a large, metal-clad roof
that folds over the enclosed space. The roof appears to hover, an
effect that is enhanced by its variable thickness, and gives the
building an expressive, sculptural character. And yet the roof's
size and shape can be justified in pragmatic terms: on one side it
has to cover a parking area, on another side a pedestrian side
walk, which requires a shallower overhang, and on yet another
side a loading area, requiring deeper shelter again.

Library
Address
Adamiceva Cesta 15
1290 Grosuplje
Slovenia
http://www.gro.sik.si/
.
This new public library is in fact an extension to the existing
library which is one of the last remaining good-quality
19th-century buildings in Grosuplje and as such treated as an
extremely valuable piece of architecture. The old building
underwent extensive renovation, but the architects' focus was on
the new structure, which is only loosely connected to the old
one. They decided to 'mirror' the volume and gently re-shape it
into an appropriate structure. The central function of the library
is visible on the outside as the building 'opens up' towards the
main street like a book. The vertical alternations of glazed and
closed surfaces -glazed towards the old building and closed
towards adjoining apartment blocks- make it look filigreed yet
solid. The building 'catches' dispersed natural light through the
skylights on the zigzagging roof, as well as from the vast glazed
façade sections. The library is not just a centre of information, it
is also important as an 'urban intensifier'.

Hotel Sotelia
Address
Zdraviliska Cesta 24
SI-3254 Podcetrtek
Slovenia
http://www.terme-olimia.com/si/namestitev/sotelia/
.
Slovenia offers great potential for spa and thermal bath
architecture. Unfortunately, Hotel Sotelia represents one of the
few good examples, while most hotels boast glitz and kitsch.
Located between two existing hotels, Sotelia clearly distances
itself from the built environment and connects, instead, with its
natural surroundings. Dean Lah & Milan Tomac's primary concern
was to avoid an immense building mass, like the one suggested in
the client's brief, which would have blocked the last remaining
view of the forest. And so they broke that unit up into small units
arranged in landscape-hugging tiers. As a result, the four-storey,
145-room building appears much lower and smaller than this
description would suggest. Inside the hotel, although the interior
does not trumpet 'architect-designed', many elements, like the
bamboo-encased columns, were in fact designed by the
architects. And it is these columns - tree trunks by day and pillars
of light by night - that attract the traveller.

Gradaska Apartment Building
Address
Gradaska ulica 20
1000 Ljubljana
Slovenia
.
The Gradaska apartment building is located in a rather odd zone,
poised between Ljubljana's city centre and the protected rural
enclave of Krakovo. Like a giant ice cube reflecting its
surroundings, the fragmented nature of the area is reflected in
its internal organization, too. The twelve apartments are far from
the standard single-storey affair. Spatial differentiation was
achieved by stretching the living room to double or
one-and-a-half height. These vertical spaces are embraced by
either an extremely open loft-type layout or a more conventional
layout with separate bedrooms. Within the closed shell of the
building, the apartments interlock like pieces in a
three-dimensional version of a Tetris game. On the unusually flat
façade - deliberately free of balconies - the primary role is
reserved for glass. The vast glazed surface is a combination of
reflective and transparent glass which imparts elegance and
hardness, but also provides the façade with an almost tactile
quality.

House SB
Address
Pot v Smrecje 28A
1000 Ljubljana
Slovenia
.
Located in a suburban settlement on Ljubljana's outskirts, House
SB is not at all a typical Slovenian single-family house. The
architects opted for a patio typology with two wings on different
levels framing a small garden area. While the house opens
welcomingly towards its surroundings, its street face is almost
standoffish. But unlike traditional houses, House SB is not hidden
from curious passers-by behind a fence. Instead, the house itself
is designed as a fence that keeps street life at distance. The
light-filled living area in the upper wing is an open loft space that
contrasts with the seclusion of the bedroom area below. At the
intersection of these two overlapping volumes one can appreciate
the complexity of the house. A rigorous use of materials (the
whole house, including pitched roof and terrace, is clad in larch
wood planks) and lack of decoration give the architectural
concept its strength. Everything unnecessary has been omitted
leaving the surfaces smooth and abstract.

Social Housing
Address
Polje 371-376
1000 Ljubljana
Slovenia
.
Faced with a serious shortage of housing and outrageous
free-market prices, the Slovenian government has introduced a
national housing policy, financed from the Slovenia Housing
Fund. The Slovenian housing industry is not yet ready to
experiment; commercial forces are still inclined to stick to tried
and tested models rooted in the collectivist imagery. That was
especially the case in the Polje social housing project on the
outskirts of Ljubljana. Dealing with the existing and outdated
urban project for six separate villa blocks placed on a rigid grid
was no easy task. But Bevk Perovic arhitekti accepted the
restrictions as a challenge and changed the space in between the
housing blocks, since radical changes to the existing urban plan
were not possible. They introduced a small park with a children's
playground, making the landscape part of the housing scheme.
Private-public interchange continues on open hanging balconies
which act as spatial extensions of the interiors.

Apartments On The Coast
Address
Livade
6310 Izola
Slovenia
.
This apartment block in Izola, Slovenia is part of the national
social housing scheme. Since 30 apartments were for sale the
budget was extremely tight. The construction costs of the
non-profit block were 600 euros per square metre which
translated into 1250 euros per square metre selling price. Rok
Oman of Ofis architects conducted a masterly study of the floor
plans. A modular scheme was applied within the given contours
of the block, resulting in optimum use of space and a maximum
net saleable surface area. Collective spaces were reduced to a
minimum to keep the square metre price low. After solving the
internal layout, Ofis turned to the external appearance. The
balconies were transformed into semi-closed loggias wrapped in
colourful awnings that act as sun shades. This playful optical
game transforms the block into an impressive design object,
causing controversy among locals and professionals alike. The
balconies give the block a unique identity, almost like a brand.

House D
Address
Šaleška 2a
3320 Velenje
Slovenia
.
On the topography of the steep ground of this location, five
construction strips with different cladding fillers create four
different exterior fronts of the House "D". First: an abstract front
with strips, which closes the view towards the east. Second: a
Californian front, with a bold console of the ground house. Then a
Provanse front, where the house opens towards the pool,
terraces and green surroundings. The fourth front of the house is
a local one and it creates the relationship between neighboring
houses. All the above-mentioned fronts pass on from one to
another with interlocking, where two fronts merge without
loosing their own adjacent character. A cinematic sequential
experience is therefore created. The House "D" is implemented
into a very generic Slovenian semi-rural suburbia. It creates an
ambiguous, soft relation to typical double-pitched roof,
not-too-big-windows and at-least-one-balcony houses in its direct
surroundings.

Condominium
Address
Trnovski pristan 22
1000 Ljubljana
Slovenia
.
Condominium is a two-floor apartment building with 15 individual
apartments, common entrance lobby, interior winter garden and
exterior summer atrium. Its basic volume is agitated, partitioned
and non-monolithic, which allows for optimal illumination of all
apartments and a connection of interior area with the exterior
through greater greened terraces, consoled balconies and winter
gardens. The balconies extend far away from the building,
towards the circumferential garden. The partitioning reaches its
peak by the composition of façade surfaces made of pixels of
multi-colored ceramic tiles, and pre-dimensioned black metal
frames, which link Blown-up Windows and balconies of orange
wood.

Apartment House Zvezda
Address
Rejceva ulica
5000 Nova Gorica
Slovenia
.
The House Zvezda is the first apartment building in Nova Gorica
with its own garden, underground parking, attractive façade with
French windows and balconies, and penthouses with terraces in
the attic. Its architecture and design assure identification on three
levels to its residents: my house 'Zvezda House, my garden' the
common house garden, and my apartment. The garden of the
building is designed between the crooked shapes of the building,
the Prvomajska Street and the street on the southern side of the
location. The garden represents the common place of the
residents to socialize and relax outside the building. The game
of the "windows" and "balconies" openings with emphasized
frames on the colour-neutral façade background will become an
easy-to-remember image of the House Zvezda and its trademark
from the Rej?eva Street and the Prvomajska Road.

Panoramic Garden of Chamber of Commerce and Industry of
Slovenia project presents the first structural and programmatic
intervention into the project already realised by our office. The
large summer banquet terrace is to be glazed and extended into
the current VIP room. Thus we formed an inner interior winter
garden, where a spatial ribbon carries the troughs and baskets
with lush tropical greenery, where from one can enjoy a
magnificent view of the city centre. Besides the vertical
executive business and club rooms it also represents the most
attractive interior space in the CCIS. It may be characterised as a
new type of the business and club room that is intended for
events such as ceremonial receptions, award-granting
ceremonies, banquet luncheons as well as for meetings of
extended management team. The green ribbon also enables the
partition of the space into several micro-ambiences that may be
used according to the type of event and the number of
participants.

Dom-Müller Department Store, BTC
Address
Smartinska cesta 152
1000 Ljubljana
Slovenia
.
The Dom/Müller BTC building is located in a reconstructed
storage hall in the BTC commercial center. The Optical Wall of
the store is the smooth even surface of both side facades that
curve into two parts of a frontal façade adjacent to the
highlighted main entrance to the store. Its optical effect
changes according to the angle and distance of the observer and
as such attracts the eye to observe the wall. The Optical Wall's
effect is achieved by the ratio of three elements: the print on the
glass panels. The zone of air between the panels and the
thermal isolation which also houses the lighting, and the strong
orange colour of the isolation. The major factor of the Optical
Wall's effect is the white print on the panels that with its pattern
simulates a curvature of the surface. It seems that the façade
is in a waving motion, even though it is a thoroughly even
surface. When the sun shines against it, the effect is stronger
because of the shade that the print casts on the isolation.
