THIS WEEK AT FIRST CHURCH Mrs. Mable Sharron used to make us homemade sourdough bread when we lived in Conway when I was just a little boy. We would fight over the heel piece. It still is my favorite. I love it fresh out of the oven and lathered up with Fleischmann’s margarine. I’d rather eat homemade bread than just about anything. It’s mouth-watering good. A good meal begins with hunger, and so does good religion. Jesus said, “I am the bread of life; he who comes to me shall not hunger, and he who believes in me shall never thirst.” One of the main reasons people proclaim that they are Christians is that they believe that because of Jesus they will live forever, and thus the whole point of the Christian Faith is to get your ticket punched to heaven. Clearly, Jesus did believe in eternal life, and it is something to seriously consider; but we don’t walk with Jesus just to get heaven. We walk with Jesus because He’s our friend, our love, and our time here on this earth with him is a time to fall deeper in love with the one who loved us even before we knew it. Our time in heaven is close to the same, a time to be in love with the one who first loved us. I believe in life everlasting and in the life of the world to come. Come to church, learn to love Jesus, and it will make a difference in how you live today and forever. Rev. Did you know FUMC has a group of women called the Flower Girls? Each Monday morning they gather to make bouquets from the Sanctuary Flowers given on Sunday. The Flower Girls deliver those bouquets to church members who are homebound, living in nursing homes or are hospitalized. Those flowers brighten their day and helps them to know that their church family holds them close in thought and prayer. This ministry is a blessing to both the Flower Girls and the people they serve, and it only require 2 to 3 hours on Monday morning. If you are interested, please call Sarah Spencer at 501-920-1888 or 501-374-3644, or e-mail [email protected]. Seven Week Spiritual Study Sept. 18th -Oct. 30th A seven week spirituality study is being offered this fall using the book, Open the Door, by Joyce Rupp. She has the remarkable ability to help find God in everyday experiences. In this book, she compels us to ‘open the door’ to a deeper life of prayer and a closer life with God. Structured as a daily prayer guide for everyday use, the book offers daily thematic reflection, guided meditation, prayer and related scripture. A day and evening class will be offered. Carol Sherer will lead the weekly discussions and meditations on Tuesdays at 11:00 am, and Rev. Mary Jane Cole will be leading an evening class at 6:00 pm. The lessons will start on Tuesday, September 18th and will end on Tuesday October 30th. Call the church office by Monday, September 10th if you would like to be a part of this spiritual study so books can be ordered. Books will be $10. We hope to hear from you!
