They will now run the Library Service for the Council to secure the future of all 50 of the County’s libraries and save a further £1.5 million in addition to the £3 million already saved from the budget over the past three years. The County Council remains responsible for the Service, but now commission its delivery from Libraries Unlimited, which is managed by Chief Executive Ciara Eastell and led by a Board of Trustees recruited from library staff, library Friends Groups and independent members of the Devon community. South Molton & District Museum has an exciting programme of events lined up for the next few months, including exhibitions of wood engravings and lace making. From May, we are delighted to host a display of work by leading artist Hilary Paynter, Past President of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers, who lives in Bideford. Hilary played a major part in the revival of the Society of Wood Engravers during the early 1980’s, and has been instrumental in publicising this highly skilled method of producing fine illustrations. She cuts directly into end grain woods such as box and pear, following in the tradition of the great exponent of the art, Thomas Bewick (1753-1828), and her subject matter is wide ranging, encompassing themes such as buildings, cats, gardens, landscapes and social comment. Her work is represented in many public galleries and museums, including amongst others the Ashmolean Museum, Birmingham city art gallery, Fitzwilliam Museum and the Victoria & Albert Museum. From June-August local resident Sue Morgan exhibits her collection of lace and lace-making items. Once an important cottage industry, employing mainly women and girls, South Molton later had its own lace factory, set up by Maunder & Son, in 1824.The museum actively seeks items related to lace and lace making to add to its own small collection; if you feel you have items that might be of interest to others, please feel free to bring them to the museum at any time during opening hours (Mon & Tues 1030-4pm; Thurs & Sat 1030-1pm). Despite government cuts to funding, the Council and the NHS are increasing the amount they spend on personal care and support for elderly and vulnerable people in their own homes in a bid to bring greater stability to the personal care market, improve quality and raise morale among the workforce. The contracts will begin early summer 2016 and are expected to be worth over £300 million over the next 5-7 years. The contracts aim to bring: • Higher quality support for vulnerable people • Improved support to carers • Better pay and conditions for care workers to boost recruitment and retention • More training and support opportunities to make this a job and career of choice • Greater independence for people to live their lives as fully as possible • Greater certainty for providers so that they can plan ahead and improve their responsiveness The Council and the NHS arrange personal care for more than 4,000 people a week, delivering over 2 million hours of care. Services such as helping people to get dressed, prepare a meal or take medication are a vital way to help them to live independently for longer without the need for residential care or a hospital stay. The increased investment comes amid concern about lack of services and difficulties in attracting new workers. Frontline carers will be paid at least the national living wage for all their contracted hours, including payment for travel time. There will be improved support and more opportunities for training with a clearer career path. Those already receiving Council or NHS-funded domiciliary care may continue to receive support from current carers, under current contracts, so long as this meets their needs and is effected. Above all the Council and the NHS want to ensure that people receive safe, high quality care from care workers who want to provide the best. The new chapel has been built on the main car park and links to the existing crematorium building. The car park has been extended and the original chapel has been refurbished and is still available for smaller, more intimate services. The new building is designed to accommodate large services, with a 'quiet' room adjoining the hall to allow families with small children to feel part of the service, without the worry of keeping little ones quiet. There is also a large covered area outside for families to gather before and after services to lay flowers. More information about North Devon Crematorium is on the North Devon Council website www.northdevon.gov.uk/crematorium.
