Our Regional crews did an outstanding job in Greensboro! I heard many
good comments and was proud of the product we placed on the floor. We

The TBOA worked the 2A Boys Championship game, Kinston over Cuthbertson,
58-55. Our guys were well prepared and did an excellent job in a very competitive
game. They are to be commended for their outstanding performance as they
represented the TBOA in a true professional manner.

Registration
Registration will open June 1st for the 2012-13
season and close on July 15th. The registration
fee for this coming year and all subsequent
years will be one doubleheader game fee,
which is currently $85, so please plan
accordingly.
TBOA Summer Camp
I am pleased to announce that the TBOA will be holding its first Annual InService/Identification Camp, in conjunction with the USSSA National basketball
Tournament, in Greensboro, NC from June 29 to July 1, 2012. The camp will be
held at Northwest High School and other sites will be added as dictated by the
number of campers that register. William Covington, Sr is the Camp Director and
as such, all inquiries should be sent to him via email: [email protected]. William has a wealth of officiating knowledge and experience, either working or having worked in the following conference: Big South, Southern, Colonial, Sun Belt,
South Atlantic, MEAC and CIAA. He also heads up our TBOA Observer program.
The purpose of the camp is to teach fundamental skills for all levels of officiating
for high school basketball. The camp will offer instructions for 3-person officiating
mechanics, proper rotation, positioning, game management, crew communication, working with coaches….and much more.
There will be a game review and evaluation, classroom lectures, and guest
speakers of area high school coaches and other booking agents. We also plan
to offer a video critique of certain games. Current high school officials, recreation officials, and those aspiring the opportunity to move up are welcome
to attend. You will receive on-court observations from a mix of veteran
high school and college officials along with instant feedback.
The TBOA Officiating Camp is not mandatory for any of our staff members, but is highly recommended. Also, there will no longer be tryout
camps as in the past. All prospective officials are encouraged to attend
the TBOA camp, but it certainly is not required in order to be added to
the TBOA staff. By eliminating the prior “invitation only” tryout camps
representative of the past, there is now a new and unique opportunity for all prospective officials to learn 3-man mechanics and the philosophies of the TBOA as well as be observed by a deep and diverse
group of observers. Added benefits of attending this camp could be
an improved schedule, working higher intensity games, etc.
The cost for the camp is $85 per person. Registration opens April 1st
and the deadline for all registrations is June 10th. A box lunch will
be provided on Saturday and a TBOA camp t-shirt will be given to all
registered officials. Please come prepared to learn!
The Registration Form for the TBOA Officiating Camp can be found
on the website at www.thetboa.com under Training / TBOA Camp.

Observer Program
The TBOA Observer Program will be totally revamped over the summer in order to make the
system less cumbersome and provide for quicker, more efficient “to the point” feedback. We
will utilize email for a brief discussion with the officials rather than use preprinted forms and
a checklist. Officials are encouraged to have dialogue with the observers after they get their
evaluations if there are any specific questions. While I thought we had a good year in evaluating our staff, we are going to make significant improvements to get better and that will be
the focus of my summer meetings with the observer staff.
Retirements
and Planning
I have two retirements to announce so
so
far. Please join me in congratulating and
celebrating the outstanding high school
basketball officiating careers of Jim Kenan
(42 years) and Alton Duffer (35 years). We are
fortunate to have had these outstanding officials
be a part of our program for so many wonderful
years. They have demonstrated a high level of
officiating service throughout their careers and
are to be commended for the professional way in
which they conducted themselves towards our staff,
coaches, administrators and new officials.
If you are not planning to return next season, it is
paramount that you send me an email or note to
that effect prior to June 1st. I must have an effective
succession plan in place to address expected annual
turnover as well as other staff decisions that will
be made in the late summer. My commitment
to the NCHSAA and the schools we serve is to
put the very best officials on the court for every
game and every season; and to have a staff that
reflects competence, motivation, the values of
the TBOA and a commitment to excellence.
Commitment to Off-Season Conditioning
A majority of our officials look fit and athletic on the court and this is what we want. Others
need to shed a few pounds so that they can get in a good position and get their plays right.
Please work hard during the offseason to get yourself in shape and lose those pounds that
keep you from being an elite official. Several of you were notified in your evaluations about
weight loss and appearance issues; however our observers did not see every single official work
this year. Please be mindful that staff retention may be determined by your weight and appearance from last season and/or during the upcoming summer games. You have complete and total
control over this issue. If you have any questions about your status, please contact me via email
and we will discuss.
