August 2016 Newsletter - City Point United Methodist Church
THE
POIN “City Point United Methodist Church will be a Biblically
faithful and caring community without walls,
responding to God’s grace and reflecting Christ’s life.”
AUGUST 2016 NEWSLETTER
Perhaps Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young had it correct when they
sang the song, “Teach Your Children Well.” I’m not writing to argue
the meaning behind the lyrics. Some agree it pertains to the generation gap between parents and children, while others believe it to be a song about the broken relationship
between a son and his father or a response to a child in a park holding a hand grenade with the look of evil
anger on his face. Whatever the case may be, the song title and the matching lyrics might hold the key to
breaking the chain of violent acts being perpetrated in our world today. Teach your children well!
Tenney’s Tidings
As a former educator and current pastor (still a teacher,) I was taught the concept of Tabula Rasa. It is the
idea children are born as blank slates and knowledge comes from experience or perception. While I still believe in the power of genetics (I was a science teacher) and the understanding of how this branch of science
influences intellect and even some ability (I’m not writing to argue this either,) I hold fast to the idea that
children learn what they are taught with regard to values, social morals, love, hatred, compassion, respect and
an entire host of other experiential based concepts which ARE TO BE TAUGHT BY PARENTS!
If we wish to create a better world full of, and not limited to, the above aforementioned values and morals,
then we, as parents, must do a much better job. If you are considering being a parent and do not believe it is
your job to teach these, I would respectfully invite you to reconsider your decision to become a parent. Most
anyone can produce children. It takes those who are completely dedicated and committed to raise children
who are loving, respectful, compassionate, ________ (you can fill in that blank.) Parenting is a full time job.
Once your baby is conceived and born, you have just entered into a lifetime commitment. Once a parent,
always a parent. Your world has now changed forever. There is no return policy and no exchanging them for a
newer model. What you receive is what you have to mold, shape and influence. And the craft of parenting
begins the moment they gulp their first breath of air.
My children will tell you and my wife and I will confirm that we are not, have not been, or will ever be the
perfect parents. We have made mistakes, some larger than others. We have learned and, along the way, we
have taught our children about faults, failures, mistakes and forgiveness. We have allowed and encouraged
our children to fail while under the umbrella of our roof so that we might be there to help scoop them up, dust
them off, enable them to learn what got them into that mess and to try again. Along the way, we also taught
them to be courteous and respectful of ALL other people. We have encouraged them to think of others before
self (this is a tough task for child and parent alike.) We have empowered them to think for themselves, take
ownership of their decisions and accept the consequences of their behavior and decision. Let me repeat,
we are not perfect parents, but we have always taken our parenting seriously. We are certainly not poster
parents and it was never the intent of this piece of writing to insinuate such.
I simply have a burning in my soul to communicate, with utmost passion, the idea that if we wish to at least
curtail the stream of violence and hatred that seems to permeate our lives everyday, then perhaps we should
begin at home with our own children. It is not the school system’s responsibility to teach morals and values.
It is not the church’s responsibility to instill these either (we will certainly do our best to partner with you). It is
one of the burdens of parenting to teach your children well. You will find assistance and encouragement from
your schools as many have curriculum which teaches these sorts of values. As one who has influence over
the curriculum and message taught at my church, you can rest assured we are teaching these morals and
values and if you need encouragement in your home, we are here for you (and yes, that was an invitation.)
Whatever curriculum you use, whatever encouragement you need, and whatever you do, parents; TEACH
YOUR CHILDREN WELL. Teach them to love and not hate. Teach them to do to others just like they would
want others to do to them. Teach them to respect people for who they are on the inside and not the color of
their outside. Teach them to forgive. Teach them to serve. Teach them to be humble. Teach them to do acts
of mercy and kindness. Teach them to take responsibility. Teach them that this world owes them nothing.
Teach them to work hard, have fun, and laugh much. Teach them it is okay to make mistakes; these are
the breeding grounds for learning. Teach them to know, honor and respect God and to make Jesus Christ
their King and Savior. If it is your desire to make this world a safer place for your children and even your
grandchildren…Teach your children well.

A big thank you to the youth at City Point UMC. I do appreciate
your thoughtfulness and love in
making a tie blanket for me. I
had eye surgery. The day I got
the blanket, I put eye drops in my eye, covered up
with the blanket and fell asleep. No, it wasn’t too
warm, the blanket will have lots of use.
Thanks again. God Bless You,

Dearest Youth,
What a beautiful blanket you
made. I love the bright pink

thought that these special
youth took the time to make the blankets makes it
ever so special. I shall treasure it always.

Appreciation
To show how much we love and appreciate our Children’s Sunday School Teachers the children at CPUMC are invi ng their Sunday School teachers to breakfast on Sunday, August 21 at 9:30 a.m. in the DFLC. This will take place during morning fellowship and our Sunday School me. Sunday School in August
During the month of August we will be talking about how we
can help and support others in our community. The kids will be
given a New Testament Bible and challenged to give it to someone in the community that doesn’t have a Bible. This could be
someone that is a friend or someone they don’t know. This is a
way for our kids to spread the word in the community and also
show their support and commitment to helping others.
If you would like to help the kids of City Point UMC in any of these projects, you can pick up a New
Testament Bible from Patience or the church office and challenge yourself to pass one out to someone
that does not have a Bible.
If you would like to help the kids with their ongoing community service project things you can donate are
cases of water or Gatorade, a bag of candy that goes into the thank you bags. Candy included is Life
Savers, Starburst, small Payday, Snickers and Mounds candy bars, Peppermint Patties, Tootsie Rolls,
bubble gum, and Hershey Hugs. Contact Patience Rematore, Director of Children’s Ministries at 817-2849371 or [email protected] for more information.

Have you heard of
Pokémon GO?
Pokémon GO is a free Mobile
App that allows people to use
their GPS and camera on their
phones. The game allows
people to capture, battle, and
train Pokémons who appear
throughout the real world. Most
Pokémon stops are located at
churches, parks, and libraries.
Never before have Millennials
swarmed to churches and we
need to be ready! If you see a
person or kids walking around
the church grounds looking at
their cell phones don’t be
alarmed they’re just looking for
Pokémons. Welcome them, talk
to them, and invite them in. It’s
hot outside. Remember they
most likely have never been to
our church. Remember to smile
and greet and show that we are
a church with open walls.

Dresses headed to Panama
The UMW ladies have taken ordinary pillow cases (or equivalent amount of fabric) and - with a couple of snips, some
elastic and several seams - have turned them into dresses that
were delivered by Hurst United Methodist Church on their
mission trip to Panama in July.
Many ladies were involved, including those who donated pillow
cases or supplies, cut fabric, threaded elastic, sewed and
ironed. A total of 81 dresses were completed. Many thanks
to all the ladies involved!
Dear Friends,
Thank you for your gift of $5,825.52, received on May 26. You play a crucial role in our ability
to distribute food and other life-changing aid to people around the world who suffer from hunger,
and we are truly grateful. With your help, we have shipped more than 200 million meals to
schools, orphanages, vocational training programs, medical centers and other community development programs around the world. One of those places is St. Andre School in Haiti. “I am
really happy because sometimes this is the only meal I get for the whole day,” said Jonathan, a
6th grader at St. Andre. “My parents are not able to buy me food.” Because of you, Jonathan is
able to eat, learn and grow and his grades have improved. You are making a difference. Thank
you again for your support.

McCurdy Mission Trip
The youth and adults had a fabulous time at
McCurdy Ministries in Espanola New Mexico.
There was a lot of mowing and weeding. The
youth repainted a parking lot. A new sidewalk was
built. Coupons and box tops were cut out. Filing
and computer work was done. There was lots of
cleaning and scrubbing. It’s unbelievable how
much we did in such a short time. Everyone
worked hard at making McCurdy a better place.
Thank you to everyone who helped make this trip
possible. McCurdy Trip next year will be July 1 - 8!

CPUMC Grief Support Group
CPUMC’s monthly grief support group luncheon has been meeting since January 2015 and
is still going strong. Anyone dealing with the
loss of a loved one is welcome. Some come in
and out as needed, while others attend every
month. There is no right or wrong way to
grieve as we are learning together and every
story and experience is unique. However, we
all share the common human experience of
pain and loss and, as Christians, we share a common desire to
find God in the midst of it. We meet from 12:30 to 2:00 p.m.
in the Duncan Family Life Center for support and lunch on the
second Monday of the month.
Next Meeting - Monday, August 8
