Past President, Sylvia Perez, introduced our guest speaker for Thursday, September 12th. “Zoila Rolon is the perfect example of an ordinary person doing extraordinary things,” she said. Zoila described her early life in Brownsville with her job and family. There was a change in her life when she moved to Houston. She met a priest from Bosnia-Herzegovina who saw the great work she was doing with the parish volunteers. He invited her to go with a local group to Bosnia to help their parishioners there to help with volunteer work. She encountered difficult times with sickness, hunger and the cold along with a political war when these countries were declaring their independence from Yugoslavia. It was at this time that Zoila was told about the Virgin of Medjugorje, whom she visited many times during her stay in BosniaHerzegovina. She was honored for her work with the people of that region. Zoila is indeed an extraordinary person. Thank You, Zoila for your visit and for sharing such fascinating experiences with us. If you pick up just one and make it a habit, your risk for memory problems drops 21 percent; two cuts it by 45 percent; pick up three and you're 75 percent less likely to be forgetful. Adopt four healthy habits? Jackpot! Your memory will be unforgettably good. Here's our set of beneficial behaviors: 1. Not smoking! 2. Exercising at least 30 minutes five or more days a week (walking counts) and mix in strength training two to three days a week for a metabolic boost. 3. Being able to say (every day), "I dodged junk food today!" That means you ate none of the Five Food Felons (trans fats, added sugars and sugar syrups, red meats and grain that isn't 100 percent whole). 4. Eating at least five to nine servings of fruits and vegetables every day. Bonus: Meditating daily is a super-effective way to prevent memory problems. Mehmet Oz, M.D. is host of "The Dr. Oz Show," and Mike Roizen, M.D. is Chief Wellness Officer and Chair of Wellness Institute at Cleveland Clinic. 2014 Enrollment Opportunity for TRS-Care Medicare-Eligible Participants If you are a TRS-Care enrollee covered by Medicare, and you made a decision not to participate in the Aetna Medicare Advantage medical plan or the Express Scripts Medicare Part D prescription plan when you were first eligible, you will have an additional opportunity to participate in these plans effective Jan. 1, 2014. The enrollment period is from Oct. 15, 2013 – Nov. 15, 2013. This fall, TRS will send more information to TRS-Care enrollees who are eligible, but not currently participating in the TRS Medicare plans, about the enrollment opportunity for the Aetna Medicare Advantage plans and the Express Scripts Medicare Part D plans. Please take time to read these materials. If you are not currently enrolled and are interested in participating in the TRS Medicare plans effective Jan. 1, 2014, you will need to take action to enroll during the enrollment period mentioned above. If you do not take action at that time, you will remain enrolled in the standard TRS-Care plan. However, you will miss out on the richer benefits and lower costs offered through the TRS Medicare plans. Remember, if you decide to try the TRS Medicare plans, you can terminate participation at any time and resume participation in your original TRS-Care standard medical and/or prescription plan. TRS-Care has received a lot of positive feedback from the participants who are currently enrolled in the Medicare plans. Currently, there are more than 87,000 participants in the Aetna Medicare Advantage medical plans and 112,000 participants in the Express Scripts Medicare Part D prescription plans. Please note, if you are already enrolled in the Aetna Medicare Advantage plan or the Express Scripts Medicare Part D plan, you will not receive information about the enrollment period and do not need to take action to continue to participate in these plans. BARSEA’s guest speaker for January 2014 Meeting will be Samuel Berrios from Aetna to answer any questions or concerns you might have. More information can be obtained by visiting the TRS website at www.trs.state.tx. "If you don't go after what you want, you'll never have it. If you don't ask, the answer is always no. If you don't step forward, you're always in the same place." ~ Nora Roberts Newsletter #2 Page 5 BARSEA’s September 12th Meeting AP at ch of s om wo e of r Fab ulou BARSE k s Pe A’s ople Attendance 93 Woohoo!
