MASHBURN Family
Children of JOHN HARVEY and CATHERINE (TWIGGS) MASHBURN, continued.
3.
JAMES TIMOTHY MASHBURN, born 18 April 1826 in Burke County, North
Carolina. Died 10 January 1910, buried in the Chickamauga City
Cemetery, Chickamauga, Walker County, Georgia.
On 17 January 1852 in Habersham County, Georgia, he married Sultana
A. DeMiner Elliott, with Rev. J. P. Turner officiating. She was born
about 1827 in North Carolina, according to the 1860 Federal Census of
Forsyth County, Georgia. Her mother's given name was Mary and she was
living in the household of James T. and Sultana A. D. (Elliott) Mashburn
when the 1880 Census was enumerated for Forsyth County, her age given
as ninety-six. Sultana (Elliott) Mashburn died 15 May 1905 and is
buried in the Chickamauga City Cemetery, Chickamauga, Walker County,
Georgia.
James Timothy Mashburn was not listed in his father's household when
the 1850 Census was enumerated for Forsyth County, and he has not been
located in any other Georgia county census to date.
Service records show that James T. Mashburn enlisted at Cumming,
Forsyth County, Georgia on 4 August 1863 in Company K, Cherokee Legion,
Georgia State Guards, under Captain Hubbard Barker, for six months.
He was detailed for government work and never came into service,
according to company muster roll of January 1864.
James Timothy Mashburn was a licensed Methodist Minister. His wife,
Sultana (Elliott) Mashburn, blew the trumpet for the assembly at
Holbrook Camp Meetings.
The records of Ebenezer Methodist Church near Cumming in Forsyth County,
Georgia show that James and TTSuttinaTTMashburn transferred from Ebenezer
to Bethel Church in 1867. Also transferred at this same time were
Catherine E. and Harvey P. Mashburn, two of their children. Bethel
Church is located in the northeastern part of Forsyth County, near
Hall County. In 1870 and again in 1880 the family was listed as living
in Hightower, Forsyth County, Georgia. Hightower is in the northwestern
part of the county, bordering on Cherokee County.
From various census records and other information, it would seem that
James and Sultana (Elliott) Mashburn were parents of at least six
children, as follows:
a.
HARVEY or HENRY PARKS MASHBURN, born about 1853.
b.
CATHERINE ELLA ~ASHBURN, born 8 July 1854.
c.
WILLIAM McFERSON MASHBURN, born 6 June 1855.
d.

e.
CAROLINE HONTERIE McMICHAEL MASHBURN, born 2 t-'iay
1860.
f.

More detailed information on each of these six children is shown on the
following 4th Generation charts.
