We are happy you are here to celebrate with us. Welcome to our Parish Community! May your visit be blessed! PENTECOST SUNDAY MAY 15, 2016 A Message from the Pastor… Festirama is upon us! The children are excited; the committee chairs are all hard at work, scrambling for volunteers and setting up the grounds. Each year, I pray assiduously during this week for a number of things: (1) the safety of all our workers and guests during the three days, (2) that we have enough volunteers so as to not wear out people, and (3) that we are blessed with good weather for the weekend. If you have not yet volunteered, there is still time to help us out! We particularly need people to help with the tear-down on Sunday afternoon/evening. +++++ Congratulations to Joan Zunk, one of our 2nd grade teachers, who will receive the prestigious Golden Apple Award for excellence in teaching at an awards ceremony this Thursday, at the Hilton Garden Inn. Joan is one of six teachers across the diocese to receive this award. Congratulations, Joan! +++++ Compassionate and Caring People Needed – We are in need of multiple people to bring Communion to Catholics in the Sylvania Community. We have eight nursing homes/extended care facilities and Flower Hospital that have Catholic patients who wish to receive Communion on a weekly basis, and we need Eucharistic Ministers to serve on one of these days, once a month at: Sylvania Care Center (Genesis) – 1st Friday and a substitute for any Friday Also needed are people to bring Communion to homebound parishioners on a weekly basis. This service offers a wonderful way of ministering to the sick, which is both a Corporal and Spiritual Work of Mercy in our Catholic Tradition. Currently, over 75 parishioners serve as Eucharistic Ministers to the residents in these medical care facilities. If you are willing to give an hour or so of your time on a monthly basis, please contact Joanne Denyer at [email protected] or 419-8855791, ext. 230. No prior experience is necessary and training will be provided. We have completed our First Communion liturgies. There were five different celebrations—three successive 4:30 Masses and two 12:00 Masses. First Communion is always a joy for me, seeing the excitement of the children about to receive our Eucharistic Lord for the first time. They are so precious! Save the Date Annual Volunteer Appreciation Cookout Monday, June 13 Vespers at 6:00 in Church One of the challenges at First Communion liturgies is dealing with guests who have little or no understanding of what the Eucharist is. We have even had to take the measure of advising people in the opening announcements not only to silence electronic devices and refrain from picture-taking during Mass, but to dispose of chewing gum! [It is never appropriate to be chewing gum in church, unless for a medical necessity. This is not an auditorium or an arena, but the house of God and His people, preparing to receive the Body and Blood of the Lord.] I have also had to tell young men to remove their ball caps before entering the church! I certainly do not want to offend anyone, particularly your guests who may be attending Mass with you. On the contrary, funerals, weddings, and First Communion celebrations are wonderful opportunities for evangelization, when people of other faiths or even Catholics, long away from the Church, can see how beautiful and powerful our Eucharistic liturgies are. We are always happy to have guests here to pray with us. But there is a matter of decorum and respect for the Eucharist, which we must always uphold. This is even more apropos as we enter the warm summer season. Please make every effort to dress appropriately when you come to worship our God and receive the Body and Blood of the Lord Jesus. Have a blessed week. See you at Festirama! Msgr. Dennis Metzger 6:45 p.m. Cookout E. PENTECOST SUNDAY MAY 15, 2016 From Laurie, Parish Nurse... From Joanne Denyer, Pastoral Associate... 9th Annual Baby Bottle Campaign Change for Life Why is Mary so Important to Us? As Catholics, we have a special reverence for the Blessed Mother. We turn to her in prayer, in the Mass, in the Rosary, and in Marian devotions. We honor her with special feasts celebrating the significant events in her life. We place images of her in our churches and homes. The members of the Respect Life Committee distributed baby bottles again this year. The money collected will be given to organizations that assist mothers and their children. Mary: A Biblical Walk with the Blessed Mother Last weekend, Mother’s Day , May 7th and 8th, baby bottles were available at the doors of church. Please take one and fill it with change. is a study that reveals Mary’s unique role in God’s Kingdom and in our lives. Filmed on location in the Holy Land, Mary: A Biblical Walk with the Blessed Mother will place you in the midst of the powerful drama of her earthly life, taking you through her joys...and her sorrows. Join us for this study to be held on Thursday evenings, beginning May 26th and continuing for 8 sessions. The study will run from 7:00-8:30 p.m. For more information or to register, call Joanne Denyer at 419-885-5791 or email: [email protected]. The cost of the workbook is $20; please register before May 23rd. Invite a friend! Return the filled bottle on Father’s Day weekend, June 18th and 19th, to the designated box in the back of church. If you choose to return the bottle sooner, please deposit it in the box in church or bring it to the Parish Center. If you did not attend church at St. Joseph on Mother’s Day weekend, you can still pick up a baby bottle in the Hospitality Area in the back of Church. Whatever you can give to make a CHANGE in the lives of mothers and their children will be very much appreciated. If you have any questions, please call Laurie, Parish Nurse, at 419-885-5791. PENTECOST SUNDAY MAY 15, 2016 From Kim Koesters, Development Director… St. Joseph Endowment Fund…A Word from Our Parishioner “I strongly support the Endowment Fund for St. Joseph School and believe that it is a real gift to families who want their child(ren) to receive a Catholic School education. I give to this fund because I believe in the values and morals which are an integral part of a Catholic School education. As a Sister of St. Francis and a Catholic School teacher, I am personally committed to enriching the lives of our Catholic School children.” Sister Judy Beaudry Did you know, because of you, since 2003, the Endowment Fund has provided regular annual distributions to the school that total nearly $400,000? These distributions have been possible because of your contributions and the growth of the fund. The stronger the fund is, the more it can help offset the cost of running and maintaining the school. You will find an envelope for the Endowment Fund in your monthly packet. Please consider making a contribution to the Endowment Fund this month. For more information, contact Kim Koesters, [email protected] or 419-885-5791, ext. 240. We appreciate your support of our Endowment Fund! Be merciful, just as your FATHER is merciful: 2016 Annual Catholic Appeal Did you know that when an engaged couple attends a retreat in preparation for marriage, the Appeal is at work? When a catechist receives training to teach religious education, the Appeal is at work. When a baby’s life is saved from abortion or a homeless person receives a warm meal, the Appeal is at work. These are examples of ministries at work every day throughout the Diocese of Toledo, supported by your donations to the Annual Catholic Appeal. You know many of them – St. Francis Outreach Center, Helping Hands of St. Louis, La Posada Emergency Family Shelter, H.O.P.E. Food Pantry, Youth, Young Adult and Campus Ministry, and support for those men who have been called to the Priesthood. It is your donations that make possible the continuation of these ministries. If you have already made a pledge to the Annual Catholic Appeal, thank you! If not, please take a moment to prayerfully consider a gift to the 2016 Annual Catholic Appeal. You will make a difference in the lives of the many touched within the Diocese of Toledo. The campaign goal is $2,800,000, and our parish goal is $98,500. 100% of funds raised over our parish goal will be rebated back to our parish. Our parish has currently pledged $81,815 toward our goal of $98,500. Due to your generosity, we have exceeded our goal for the past four years. Thank you for your extraordinary support.
