Bulletin for July 3, 2016 - The Historic Church of St. Patrick
Dear People of God, Ah, the summer holidays, Red White and Ka-Boom, fireworks in the back yard! Hot dogs, grilled steaks, potato salad and baked beans, iced tea, lemonade and adult beverages and the chance to lay back and miss a day or two of work. I recall while studying in Washington going downtown for the beginning of the annual Fourth of July festivities on the National Mall, down where all the big public museums and such are located. Things always began on the steps of the National Archives where a copy of the Declaration of Independence is on display. The Town Crier from Alexandria, the city which was replaced by Washington, first rings his hand bell to get everyone’s attention and then reads the Declaration much as it would have been read when the thirteen colonies decided to make a break with England. We may all known the famous first few lines “When in the course of human events it becomes necessary…” but we may not know the manifest and many reasons the colonies sought to liberate themselves from a tyrannical Parliament and King in England who saw the Americas as a prime source of “taxation without representation.” Two hundred and forty years later, sipping a cold brew and turning the chicken on the bar-b-que we may have forgotten the tremendous risks taken by those who signed the Declaration, or the valiant sacrifices made by citizen soldiers in pursuit of the Independence for which the signers drafted and then promulgated the Declaration. We might want to pause this Fourth of July read the document from beginning to end and wonder whether we have by our negligence at the polls, our failure to read the signs of the times, our lack of interest in what’s happening at the National capitol, the State capitol and the City hall let down those many thousands who sacrificed their lives for a free and independent nation founded on the values of a Christian God and God’s command to love one another. The Founders are often portrayed as a group of secular humanists who had little use for the divine; however each and every one of the signers of the Declaration was a weekly attendant at religious services. Most were Anglican and attended a service very much like the Catholic Mass. Others were Presbyterian, Baptist and one Catholic but all were deeply motivated by the Word of God to seek and preserve the unique dignity of every human person. We might want to take pause Monday to reflect on human dignity and how well each of us respects the dignity of all others in our family, our parish, our community and our nation. May your celebration of our national independence be filled with joy and if you’re using fireworks in the back yard, take care of the dry weather we’ve been having so you don’t burn down the neighborhood. Msgr. Chris The Celebration of Sacraments Infant Baptism: The Sacrament of Baptism is regularly celebrated on Sunday during or after the Eucharistic Liturgy. Registered parishioners are asked to arrange for the Baptismal Preparation Class and the Liturgical Celebration by calling the Parish Office. The exact date and time of your wedding should not be determined until after consultation with a priest or deacon. If either party has previously been civilly or religiously married, the Presider is not permitted to set a date for the wedding without resolving the previous marriage. Built of hopes and dreams and visions, rock of faith and vault of grace; here the love of Christ shall end divisions: All are welcome, all are welcome, all are welcome in this place. Vs 2: Let us build a house where prophets speak, and words are strong and true, where all God’s children dare to seek to dream God’s reign anew. Here the cross shall stand as witness and as symbol of God’s grace; Here as one we claim the faith of Jesus: All are welcome, all are welcome, all are welcome in this place. Vs 3: Let us build a house where love is found in water, wine and wheat: A banquet hall on holy ground, where peace and justice meet. Here the love of God, through Jesus, is revealed in time and space; as we share in Christ the feast that frees us; All are welcome, all are welcome, all are welcome in this place. The only thing a teen in Arizona wants for his 14th birthday are birthday cards and lots of them . They are also in need of toothbrushes and toothpaste for hygiene bags to be handed out to those in need. Understand the Entire Bible Jacob Priestley’s mom, Britney Priestley, said the cards cheer him up when he’s down. “He has had quite a few times where they didn’t’ think he would make it. Because of that, we vowed to make his birthdays the best ever, because we never know when it could be his last,” she said. The Arizona teenager was diagnosed with a duel diagnosis of Autism and ADHD when he was four. When he turned 10 he was diagnosed with Mitochondrial Disease, a terminal illness. “He has been through so much in his short life and we are trying to make everything possible for him! He is our hero and we could never imagine our lives without him,” said Britney Priestley on the Adventures with Mighty Jake Facebook page. Last year the family asked for cards for Jacob Priestley and received cards from all over the country. This year, the family said they want to make his birthday bigger and better than ever. Thursday, Britney Priestley said her son was not doing well. He had several seizures and has been feeling very sick. Because he had not been feeling good, the family let Jacob Priestley open some of his birthday cards early. Birthday cards can be sent to: Jacob Priestly P.O. Box 855 Queen Creek, AZ 85142 Imagine how our parish would change if we had a profound encounter with God in Scripture, and began relating to him in a personal way. The Bible is at the heart of everything we do and believe as Catholics. A good Bible study can renew parish life, and enrich our faith. If you want a better understanding of our faith, and a deeper relationship with God, then I invite you to join us for The Bible Timeline. beginning this fall. By being a part of this study, you will not only benefit personally, but you will also help to bring about a profound renewal in our parish as we all grow closer to Christ. Journeying Through Grief We invite all who have experienced the loss of a love one to join us on Thursday, July 14, 1:30-2:30 pm for the Historic St. Patrick’s bereavement support group. This group will continue to meet on the second Thursday of each month in the church rectory. We hope to provide this time for sharing, healing, supporting, and learning. For questions call the parish office at 419-243-6452. The Historic Church of St. Patrick’s Parish/Community Activities! Prayer Hack!
