Your Pump In Style
Breastpump comes
with everything you
need to single or
double pump your
breasts and store
your breastmilk
Health & Safety Information
Important: This product is a single user item. Use by more
than one user may pose a health risk, performance questions
and voids the warranty.
Hygiene
Wash hands before touching breasts or containers and avoid
touching the inside of containers or lids. If your physician
recommends, clean the breast and surrounding area with a
damp cloth. Soap and/or alcohol are not recommended, as
they may dry the skin and cause cracked nipples.
Cleaning
Follow these cleaning instructions unless you are told otherwise by your healthcare professional.
Prior to cleaning, take apart all parts of your breastpump
accessory kit. Especially be sure to remove the yellow valve
from the breastshield and separate the white membrane from
the valve prior to cleaning. See parts 9 & 10 on the Parts List
(Page 12).
Prior to first use and before first use each day:
Disassemble, wash and rinse all parts of your kit and breastpump that come in contact with the breast and milk (except
pump and bags). Tubing should be washed weekly, at minimum, or when milk or condensation is visible.
• Place parts in a 4-5 quart pan.
• Fill to within 1 inch of rim with cold water.
• Cover and boil for 20 minutes.
• Remove from stove, drain water off and allow parts to cool in
open pan.
• Remove all parts and allow to air dry on a clean surface.
Cover parts when not in use.
If the tubing is washed, shake water droplets out and hang to
air dry. For faster drying, attach tubings to pump and run pump
for 1-2 minutes or until dry, or pour a small amount of isopropyl
alcohol through tubings to dry. Tubing may appear white/hazy
following boiling but this does not impact performance.
4
Pump In Style Breastpump m
®
If condensation appears in tubing:
To eliminate condensation after you have completed pumping, continue running the pump with
the tubing(s) attached for another 1-2 minutes or
until dry.
Carefully check tubing for milk spots. If milk gets
in the tubing(s), clean tubing and kit according to
the instructions referred to in “Prior to first use
and before first use each day” (page 4). Tubing
should be washed weekly, at minimum, or when
milk or condensation is visible.
3. Refer to cleaning instructions “Prior To First Use
And Before First Use each Day.” Be sure to separate the vacuum regulator disk and port cap from
the diaphragm cap prior to cleaning.
4. Use a damp (not wet) cloth to wipe the diaphragm
and bag. Do not immerse the motor unit or any of
the bags in water.
5. When components are completely dry, reassemble
breastpump and kit.
After each use:
Disassemble and wash all parts that come in contact
with the breast and milk in warm, soapy water
(except pump and bags).
• Rinse in clear water.
• Air-dry on clean towel and cover parts when not in
use.
• Use a damp (not wet) cloth to wipe the bag and
diaphragm cap of breastpump after each use (see
part 2a or 2b on parts list (Page 12).
If There Is An Overflow:
If milk accidentally gets into the tubings or behind
the diaphragm cap:
1. Turn off the pump and unplug from power source.
2. Pump In Style, #57020 or #57022: Remove
the diaphragm cap on the front of the breastpump
by pulling down using the finger grips.
Use of microwave
sterilization is not
recommended and
may damage some
components
Storing Breastmilk
Check with your hospital for specific storage
instructions.
When freezing, do not fill containers more than
3/4 full to allow space for expansion. Label containers with the date of pumping.
In a refrigerator:
• To inhibit the growth of bacteria, breastmilk which
is not used immediately should be refrigerated.
Milk can be refrigerated 5-7 days or, if longer storage is needed, freeze the milk.
In a refrigerator freezer compartment:
Pump In Style Traveler or Companion
Breastpumps, #57024 or 57025: Snap off
the diaphragm cap using thumb tab.
• In the freezer compartment inside a refrigerator,
breastmilk can be stored for approximately six
months.
In a separate freezer:
• In a separate -20° C freezer, breastmilk can be
stored for approximately 12 months.

In the Pump In Style Bag:
Troubleshooting
• The special reflective liner pouch will hold up to
four containers of breastmilk. At least three flat
cooling elements (#8990026) must be used with
the Pump In Style, or one contoured cooling element (#8997011).
If There Is Low or No Suction
1. Make sure all connections of the kit and
breastpump are secure.
2. Make sure white membrane is laying flat
against the yellow valve head. Check that the
yellow valve head is not damaged. Refer to
the assembly instructions.
3. Make sure the diaphragm cap or faceplate on
the front of the breastpump fits evenly and
securely.
Only one contoured cooling element (#8117010) or
two rectangular cooling elements (#8997007) are
necessary for the Pump In Style Companion or
Traveler Coolers.
4. Make sure the hard end of the tubings fit
securely into the backs of the breastshields
and the soft ends into the ports on the
diaphragm cap or faceplate.
5. Make sure the vacuum regulator is flat on
the diaphragm cap or faceplate.
Other concerns
As soon as breast pumping is finished, place the
milk container or bag in the compartment with the
cooling elements. If the cooling element(s) are
frozen solid, they will safely cool your breastmilk
for up to 12 hours. When you return home transfer
the containers to the refrigerator or freezer.
Thawing frozen breastmilk:
• Thaw frozen breastmilk by holding the container
under warm water. Milk may be defrosted in the
refrigerator overnight. Gently shake the container
to blend any fat that has separated.
Caution:
• Do not thaw frozen breastmilk in a microwave or
in a pan of boiling water.
• If adding expressed breastmilk to container of
already frozen breastmilk, make sure to add a
lesser amount than the already frozen amount.
6
6. Take care not to kink tubing(s). If milk is
seen backing up into tubing, check that tubing is not kinked or pinched.
7. If you experience discomfort while pumping
contact a breastfeeding specialist. You may
be more comfortable with a PersonalFit or
SoftFit Breastshield. Call 1-800-TELL-YOU
to locate a breastfeeding specialist in your
area.
8. In the US, call Medela at 800-435-8316 or
815-363-1166. In Canada, call Medela at
800-435-8316 or 905-608-7272. In other
countries, contact your local distributor or
the location where you purchased your
pump.

Pump In Style® Battery Pak Instructions
The Pump In Style Battery Pak
The Pump In Style Battery Pak is intended for use with Pump
In Style®, Pump In Style Traveler™ or Pump In Style
Companion™ Breastpumps ONLY. Battery Pak uses 8 AA
alkaline batteries, or, for more consistent pump performance,
use rechargeable batteries. Each will provide approximately
3 hours of pumping time. It is recommended that batteries be
replaced or recharged between the 10th and 12th pumping session.
Battery Insertion
Slide off battery covers. Place the NEGATIVE (-) end of the battery against the front of
the spring. Push the battery in and down in one motion until the battery snaps into
place. The POSITIVE (+) end of the battery should be near the positive sign on the
Battery Pak. NOTE: If the battery is inserted in the opposite direction, the battery may
not function correctly. Four batteries must be inserted on each side of the Pak. Replace
battery covers.
Battery Removal
Slide off battery covers. Insert a BLUNT, NON-METALLIC tool into the removal slot
on either side of the Battery Pak. Gently pry the battery out. Replace battery covers.
The Pump In Style Battery
Pak was designed for safe
use while stored in its
pouch.
The pouch fits
inside the main bag or motor
bag, along with the transformer.
Or for easier
access, the velcro strap
allows for attachment to the
pump shoulder strap.
