Community Education
We believe we must give our community the realization
that in nature we are all part of one another and whatever
happens to one species inevitably will affect the whole chain
of nature, including us. This knowledge is so necessary to
be good stewards of the land and protectors of our natural
resources.
Training/Higher Education
We believe in the importance of providing training in ecology
and conservation.
Youth Education
We believe in teaching and engendering in our young a love
and reverence for nature and all things pertaining to it.
Values
To provide exceptional programs and experiences in
environmental education.
Vision
To inspire commitment to the thoughtful care of the
environment.
Mission
Outreach
We believe that the promotion and demonstration of the
Dodge mission is an important expression of our educational
experience, and a necessity for sustaining our financial future.
Restoration & Preservation
We believe that in order to provide
quality educational experiences and be an
example to our community, we must take
care of the land that is the foundation
of the nature center. It is also important
we preserve the heritage of the nature
center through the care and keeping of its
buildings and grounds.
Jason Sanders
Executive Director
Be a part of what’s next. Thank you for your continued support of Dodge.
• A growing partnership with Independent School District 197 that has the potential to expand environmentally-focused curriculum to more
area schools. An example of our success in this area is Garlough Environmental Magnet School, now serving K-4th grade students in a
rigorous environmental studies program that emphasizes science, technology, and math.
• Now as a national model for nature-based preschools around the country, Dodge Nature Preschool is celebrating 10 years of educating
preschoolers about the natural world.
• The Marie Property is being rediscovered for its beautiful walking trails after a long restoration process to remove non-native and invasive
species such as buckthorn, burdock, and garlic mustard.
• Outreach programs are expanding Dodge Nature Center’s reach to a greater number of area schools and businesses, therefore increasing
the number of people interested in nature and taking care of our environment.
• Volunteers at Dodge continue to be an integral part of support to our mission in providing exceptional experiences in nature and
environmental education.
• New sources of revenue and support are being developed to succeed the vital leadership and contributions of Mrs. Olivia Dodge.
• Increased awareness about Dodge has more people from all over the Twin Cities discovering the nature center as a retreat just minutes from the city.
Thomas Irvine Dodge Nature Center
Fiscal Year 2010 Annual Report
I sit here today and ask myself “What’s Next?” All around I see glimpses of the possibilities for the future
and of successes to come.
In 1967 Olivia Dodge started Thomas Irvine Dodge Nature Center right at the beginning of the modern
environmental movement. In the following 43 years, over 1,000,000 people have participated in our
environmental educational programs.
A Message from Executive Director Jason Sanders
Dodge Nature Center: Fiscal Year 2010 in Review
Programs
Partnerships
In FY10, Dodge introduced Discover Your
Inner Wild, a new series of programming
encouraging adults to rediscover the joys
of nature with the same curiousity and
playfulness of a child. Programming
included wild edibles, bee keeping, and
raising chickens at home. Another new
program, All Around Dodge, provided
a week-long summer camp for children
with autism and has become a model for other nature
centers. Nature After Dinner, also introduced in FY10, brought
together families for a weeknight program highlighting a new
adventure in nature every month. After serving homeschool
groups for a number of years we added a monthly Homeschool
Program for individual families. Offered once a month for
students age 5 and up, this program offers an opportunity for
study at the nature center on topics such as insects, raptors,
winter adaptations of plants and animals, and aquatic life.

Heritage Middle School
Our partnership with Independent School District 197 was
extended from Garlough Environmental Magnet School with
students in grades K-4, to 5th grade at Heritage Middle School.
A Dodge naturalist began offering a weekly session for 5th grade
classes at the school and students came to the Dodge prairie
pond for field experiences once a month.
Volunteers
Each year, our passionate and talented volunteers help
Dodge educate thousands of children, clear acres of invasive
buckthorn, care for our animals, help manage our office, and
ensure event and program success. In fiscal year 2010, more
than 648 volunteers committed 11,491 hours helping Dodge
operate at the highest possible level.

Preschool
Dodge Nature Preschool continues
as a national model for naturebased early childhood education.
2010 marked the preschool’s
10th anniversary. Thousands of
preschoolers have now experienced
nature climbing up “Challenge
Hill”, collecting eggs in the chicken
coop, jumping in mud puddles,
and exploring the woods and
prairie. Each day, these children
have spent time outside being active, no matter
the weather. These experiences in nature become the foundation
for heathy children who respect and protect our natural world.

Dodge is proud to be a strong positive
presence in our community. Programs
and events provide opportunities to bring
families together, get people active in the
outdoors, and give people the knowledge
to make wise choices in respect to the

Grounds Crew
In a new partnership through the East Metro Integration
District, third grade students from the Stillwater school district
and Garlough Environmental Magnet School formed friendship
groups in which they learned more about diversity while studying
natural science together at Dodge.
Speakers Series
This year’s series started off with “Living Green: Simple Choices
that Make a Difference”. In January, we explored the impact that
sulfide mining activities could have on water quality. The series
concluded with a discussion on the state of Minnesota’s forests
in the face of climate change, followed by a walk in the woods to
learn how the unique trees at Dodge could be affected.

This year’s honored volunteer, Pete Fleming, is the sixth recipient
of the Shan Knox Volunteer of the Year Award. This award pays
tribute to a dedicated volunteer who embodies outstanding
commitment to Dodge Nature Center and whose contributions
are an outstanding example of all of our volunteers’ hard work.
For the past four years Pete has led children on hikes to find animal
tracks and signs, taught children about prairies, and even led
many trips over to the Lilydale Brickyard for the rocks and fossils
class. In total, he has led over twenty different programs here at
Dodge. Pete has been a member of the Programs Committee for
two years and recently joined the Development Committee. He
is the leading force in our Signature Speaker Series, which has
brought many new friends to Dodge to learn about a variety of
topics.
For all of these accomplishments, we are pleased to celebrate
Pete Fleming as the Dodge Nature Center Shan Knox Volunteer
of the Year. Congratulations and thank you Pete!
