SUMMER RAIDER
2015–16 JACKSON ACADEMY
INTRODUCING the JA SHIELD AND SEAL
SUMMER RAIDER
Description of the JA Shield and Seal
Process
Jackson Academy has long employed a shield to give visual
representation to the academic stature of the school. Two shields
have been used throughout the school’s history. In 2014, JA
revisited the design and elements of the shield with the hope of
raising the shield’s prominence as a mark identified with JA and
increasing its usage by the JA community. A student group, along
with a team of staff members, worked alongside the school’s
marketing and communication agency, Mindpower, Inc., to research
the JA shield and other educational institutions’ shields and their
symbolism. Students and staff drew prototypes of potential
shields, and these were shared with the agency. Students and
staff responded to various designs. Options were presented to
the JA Administrative Team for feedback. After three phases of
refinement, a final choice was presented to the Board of Trustees,
which approved the shield and an accompanying seal in June
2015. Of particular note, the first visual choice was closely
inspired by a version drawn by one of our students.
The rays of the sun also represent enlightenment and are
reaching outward signifying exploration, innovation, and new
beginnings each day.
Chevron: Awarded in ancient heraldry, the chevron signifies
faithful service and accomplishment. The shape of the chevron
bears resemblance to the roof of a house, representing family and
home. Family and community are viewed as hallmarks of the JA
environment.
Acorns: Acorns represent growth and potential. A tiny acorn
develops into an oak tree, initially small, but with potential for
significant growth and strength. In the same way, Jackson
Academy begins with the limitless potential of its youngest
students at age three and inspires and equips them to lead lives
of purpose and significance. The four acorns represent the four
divisions of the school, signifying each division’s role in nurturing
the potential of each student.
Description and Symbolism
Torch: The torch represents learning and carrying a torch into the
world. A lamp and flame were in each previous JA shield. The
flame shown atop a torch, rather than in a lamp, represents JA
students carrying the torch into the world and passing the torch
to others, a key aspect of a purposeful and truly significant life.
Book with Founding Date: The book represents JA’s founding
for the purpose of teaching reading by phonics. The date is
placed on the book connecting JA’s founding date with the
school’s founding purpose. This imagery represents the quest
and thirst for knowledge.
When used as the Jackson Academy seal, the design bears the
words, Omnes Pro Uno, which is Latin for All For One. Our students
suggested including this phrase in the seal.
The Board of Trustees approved the Jackson Academy shield
that can stand independently or be paired with an outer circle to
create the Jackson Academy seal. Elements of the shield and
seal each have symbolic meaning.
Oak Wreath: The oak wreath symbolizes tradition and the tree of
learning. JA students play and learn under the shade of prominent
Live Oak trees lining the front of campus. The wreath has 18 oak
leaves on each side, coinciding with the typical age that a
student completes his or her education at JA.
Rising Sun: The rising sun represents spirituality and innovation
and draws inspiration from Luke 1:78-79:
“[B]ecause of the tender mercy of our God,
by which the rising sun will come to us from heaven to
shine on those living in darkness and in the shadow of
death, to guide our feet into the path of peace.”
Many of the elements of the shield are rooted in Jackson Academy
history, with four particular elements carried forward from the previous
two JA shields. The crest, or top portion of the shield, takes its
shape from the first JA shield. The flame, book, and founding
date are classic elements of previous shields.
Usage
The seal will be used on official documents, such as diplomas.
The shield will be used on academic attire, such as a lapel pin.
Both will be used on campus physical facilities and structures as
appropriate. Usage guidelines are being developed to assist the
JA community with the appropriate use of these academic symbols.
Guidelines will be available on the JA website and through the
Office of Marketing and Communications at a later date.

Parents, Students, and Faculty Tabs on the Web
JA Annual Fund
The Parents, Students, and Faculty Tabs have a wealth of
information useful to everyone: forms, major events calendar/
academic year calendar, health form, etc. Please use these tabs
as your “go-to” spot for needed information that requires forms.
These tabs are located at the upper right hand corner of the
website home page.
Gifts to the Jackson Academy Annual Fund are hard at work this
summer. Thanks to the tremendous generosity of our JA families,
the Annual Fund is making an enormous impact in what our
students can look forward to when they return to campus this fall.
Raider Report
During the school year, remember to review the Raider Report,
a document produced by the Upper School and Middle School
academic divisions to keep families abreast of day-to-day activities, useful information, and schedule updates. The link for the
Raider Report is located under the Parents Tab on the upper right
side of the home page.
JA Inc. Corporate Meeting
Monday, August 24 at 6:00 p.m.
Assembly Hall/Learning Center
All JA parents are encouraged to attend.
School Calendar
The JA home page has a school calendar tab that takes the user
to a Google Calendar. The calendar can be viewed in different
ways (i.e., agenda, monthly, etc.) and can be printed. The academic
calendar/major events calendar that is printed in the JA Directory
will also be posted at this tab, in addition to being available at the
Parents Tab.
From the School Nurse
Before your students return to school, please complete and
submit the student information and medical form. The form is
available on the JA website (www.jacksonacademy.org/parents/)
under the Parents Tab (upper right of home page).
This form will need to be completed and returned as soon as
possible and no later than the first day of school. For questions,
contact Kathy Sheffield at [email protected].
A Blue & White Night
Saturday, August 15 at 7:00 p.m.
The South Warehouse
Annual Giving is helping provide renovations to the Upper School
hallways with new lockers, carpet, and lighting. In the Preschool,
a new glass door for K3 will be installed, as well as renovations
in various classrooms. The Annual Fund is also contributing to
the ARC Resource area renovation in Upper School, updated
flooring in numerous locker rooms, and renovation of the Middle
School teachers’ lounge.
“We are truly grateful to our many families and friends who give
so generously to the Annual Fund,” said Jackson Academy President
Cliff Kling. “Our donors are partnering with us to provide our
students with the very best in independent education. The Annual
Fund is a true difference maker providing programs and campus
enhancements not possible through tuition dollars alone.”
Thank you to our parents, faculty, alumni, trustees, grandparents,
and friends for their gifts that totaled more than $325,000
during the 2014-2015 school year. With approximately 73 percent
of the school’s operating budget designated to retaining and
attracting quality teachers, the need for additional sources of
income is a necessity. Gifts to the Annual Fund help provide our
trustees with additional funds to complete projects across campus.
JA alumni continue to play a major role in the success of the
Annual Fund. Their gifts go towards providing our faculty with a
$150 Christmas bonus and gift card.
Last year’s Annual Fund could not have been possible without
our Annual Fund chairs, Brandon and Foster Kennedy, as well as
the 2014-2015 division chairs, Hillary and Chesley James, Preschool;
Tabitha and Stephen Clay, Lower School; Story and Todd Warren,
Middle School; and Amanda and Lash Lacoste, Upper School.
Another huge thanks to our Development Committee chair, Stephen
Johnston, along with the 2014–2015 committee members: Phillip
Bowman, Scot Thigpen, John Lundy, Jan Ishee, George Walker,
Ray Robertson, and Austin Barbour.
The JA Annual Fund is the ONE fund that helps enhance the
Jackson Academy experience. More details to come about our
2015-2016 Five-Week Annual Fund campaign. You won’t want to
miss it!
The JAA will host A Blue & White Night at The South Warehouse
in Jackson on Saturday, August 15, 2015. The event will feature a
fabulous silent auction, a tuition raffle, a live auction, amazing food,
and live music. Dress in your favorite casual blue and white outfit
and join us for a wonderful evening. For more information or to
purchase tickets, visit jacksonacademy.org/unite.
FALL SPORTS SCHEDULE
SUMMER RAIDER
Visit jacksonacademy.org for up-to-date athletic schedules. All schedules are subject to change.
JA CODE OF GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP
• Promote the ideals of good sportsmanship, ethics, and integrity.
• Cheer for the Raiders, not against the competition—this
includes signs.
• Respect officials and their decisions. Games can’t be played
without them.
• Win with humility without boasting; lose with grace, without
excuses or finger pointing; do both with dignity.
• Demonstrate respect for opposing fans, coaches, and team
members.
• Realize that a ticket is a privilege to attend an athletic competition and support Jackson Academy activities, not a license to
verbally assault others or be generally obnoxious.
CROSS COUNTRY
• Good sportsmanship should be contagious.
• Self control is a virtue.
• Be an exemplary role model by positively supporting and encouraging Raider team members and their coaches. Have fun
promoting our teams.
• Be a fan...not a fanatic!
• Make good sportsmanship a conscious priority. It’s simply the
right thing to do.
• Do unto others as you would have others do unto you.

The Jackson Academy Performing Arts Department is pleased to
present its fall Upper School musical Into The Woods by Stephen
Sondheim and James Lapine. Into The Woods is a modern twist
on the beloved Brothers Grimm fairy tales in a musical format
that follows the classic tales of Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood,
Jack and the Beanstalk, and Rapunzel—all tied together by an
original story involving a baker and his wife, their wish to begin a family,
and their interaction with the witch who has put a curse on them.
There will be three opportunities to see our talented Upper
School cast and crew in this production:
Saturday, November 7 at 7:00 p.m.
Sunday, November 8 at 2:00 p.m.
Monday, November 9 at 7:00 p.m.
Tickets will be for sale online closer to production dates and at
the door prior to each performance. For more information on
any of our performances, email Katie Shores at
[email protected].
