Run Report 1916: Sandgropers Delight
Preamble: The Sandgropers Delight, brought to you by MelAdjusted, the man who put the ‘grope’ in
‘Sandgroper’, and his co-hare MrPotatoHead er, the man who put the ‘root’ in root vegetables, I guess!
New venue for the club, and a good one, easy to find but secluded, plenty of parking, shelter for the
bucket and no Miss Fukyerniteups or chlorine nearby. Said to be a sacred site, home of the
‘VBDreamtime’, followed by the ‘Woke-up-with-a-headache’ time! Mase has his 1600 runs tonite and
takes a drink before the run.
Run #1916: Good mix of road and bush, some of the bush bits were made more interesting by lumps of
weathered gypsum that looks, in torchlight, just like flour! Five and a half kays and return to the bucket
with the snacks out and a roaring fire. If only the missus would treat us so good!
Visitors/Returniks: RustyNuts SgtBilko Biggles HarveyWallbanger Ampol with Troppo filling in for
an absent Donka on the vocal chords.
General Business: Hookey gave a rundown on his nofuckerturnedup nite. Screwy takes the opportunity
to discuss the coming Crankers ride in...Albany?..Esperence?..errr..John o’Groats???? I did note it was
on a Sunday and Patch’s better half is ofishyating. Sports report has big money on the 3rd Test (update
as I write this Ozzies 3 for not many at lunch. Clark was thinking about where he was going to have his
next tat placed on his arm as he was bowled. All Blacks still #1 in the Wurld and drawn to play France in
the World Cup Semi Final again. Voodoo advises us of the demise of Leeky Dick of Jakarta Hash, (GM
of I/Hash ’82). C-Mans father in law also passed on and a few moments silence taken for reflective
thought. All this interspersed with Mase having a drink(s).
Charges: Concord on Habb for calling a false ‘on’ Screwy on Kazi for no torch and NiceTits for leaving
his in his glovebox (why do they still call it a ‘glovebox’? Does anyone keep gloves in theirs?) Wimpy
charges Bilko and returns his GMs mug.
Historian: Mase 1600 runs and it is a sign of the esteem this man is held in that the Members queued up
to give accolades, Biggles Popeye Bilko to mention a few. Stories of Jeepney incidents, slippery poles,
wheelbarrow races, sleek afleets, the lot.
ARSE: Coops stands in for C-Man has a word…FARTLEK..some Swedish runner…Squirt is in Italy so
Hookey stands in for the cupcake. Several nominees for the Wanker but it was agreed that Mother
should take it to ensure it is returned without dog-germs next week.
Run Assessment: Harvey Wallbanger gives the run report 10/10….Hares act mentions ducks arses
and Mase leads us in Song #2 before we retire for minestrone soup.
It is written that, ‘If high heels were so wonderful, men would still be wearing them.’ (quote does not apply
to anyone under five foot two).
Reet Grand Yorkshire Lads Continued: Supplementary TV Heros: The Samurai
Who, like me, used to rush home from school to turn on the old B&W TV and watch ‘The Samurai’?..Of course I used to
have to beat my sister up first as she always wanted to watch ‘My Friend Flicka’ instead! But are you aware that the
premise of a wandering noble hero accompanied by a faithful sidekick was actually stolen from the true tale of a Yorkshire
Warrior? Yep, Shintaro, he with the greasy pony tail, the mouth that spoke sixteen words when the sound track spoke only
ten, and with his constant companion Tombei the Mist an Iga Ninja (or was that Eager Ninja?) was actually a Yorkshire
lad called Sydney Throgmorton who wandered Ilkley Moor fighting the good fight.
Like me, did you ruin your Mums best scissors cutting star knives out of an old sheet of galvanized tin-plate? Did you ever
wonder how a star knife, with a blade one inch long, could kill a Koga Ninja on contact….must have been poisoned…..the
actual background to this was the habit of Yorkshire yeomen of carrying a snack, in the form of a circular Yorkshire
Pudding, in their pockets and, if attacked, they would remove it and throw it at their enemies, rendering then unconscious,
or dead! Woodville High School eventually banned the ownership of star knives on school property, which seems pretty
tame when you consider you can take a taser and crack-pipe to school these days!
The Japs had no idea when it came to armour, though, old Shintaro used to get around with what looked like his Mums
wicker laundry basket on his head! No wonder they lost the war eh? Between that and living in houses with paper walls
they had no chance!
The Ninjas were great, though, weren’t they? Running here there and everywhere dressed in their pyjamas with a cloth on
their head. They could jump backwards into the trees and on to the roofs of buildings too. This was copied from a real
Yorkshire hero, Eric Popplewell, who won the backwards high jump gold medal at four successive Olympic Games before
it was realized that he was just wearing his shirt back to front!
But, my sister used to get her way every other day or so, so it was ‘My Friend Flicka’ or, if I had a lucky compromise, ‘RinTin-Tin’ instead…no dogs in Hash, no dogs in the US Cavalry I rekon! Or stupid kids called ‘Rusty’ (no offence meant,
RustyNuts). It was that or Humphrey Bear or Fat Cat…no cable TV in those days! So I only ever saw half the episodes of
The Samurai, but that really didn’t matter, it wasn’t like there was much of a story line….and the poor b*stards today with
‘Home & Away’ and ‘Neighbours’……almost makes you wish the Japs had won the war, the kids TV would be better!
