Newsletter www.morrisessex.imanet.org A Tradition Helping Develop Successful Accounting and Financial Leadership Our Chapter’s Next Meeting Volume 86 Issue 03 October 2013 President’s Message Please note our new meeting location: Sheraton Tara Parsippany 199 Smith Road, Parsippany Fellow Members, Our September meeting was quite enlightening as Tim Gearty had us reveal our personality traits through a simple test we took. It also helped us identify how to deal with our coworkers by understanding how they tick. Tim earned us 2 CPE during a fast paced entertaining presentation. Also, it was wonderful to see many first time attendees. Wednesday, October 16, 2013, 6:15PM 1 CPE Cost $35 (College Students $30) Join us for Longevity Month as we celebrate 50-year Member Anniversaries Our Featured Speaker and Topic: Peter Tarhanidis, Quest Diagnostics Change Management Peter Tarhanidis, Program Director, Invigorate, joined Quest Diagnostics in 2012. He supports business transformation initiatives across the seven Invigorate flagship programs and is developing an enterprise-wide project management capability in collaboration with the Business Performance Excellence team. Prior to joining the company, Peter was a Principal Management Consultant with PA Consulting Group. He has also held IT leadership roles with Johnsons & Johnson, financial / IT roles at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and supervised customer service operations at Federated Department stores. Peter holds an MBA, and BA in Economics and is a certified Project Management Professional (PMP), Six Sigma Black Belt and IT Service Management (ITIL v3.) He volunteers with the Project Management Institute and was a National Malcolm Baldrige Quality Examiner. Please note that we have moved the monthly dinner meetings to the Sheraton Tara Parsippany. It is at 199 Smith Road, just off of Route 287 and 80. We would love to see our new members attend as well as our faithful membership. This meeting will also be designated as Longevity Month and we are thankful for those that have been dedicated and supportive of IMA for years. On room rates $120 and higher Page 3 XBRL CMA Subject and Financial Fact Variance Analysis There are different types of variances: materials variances, direct labor variances, overhead variances (both variable and fixed), variances in ledger accounts, plus sales, and product mix variances. Variance analysis is an important tool of the management accountant because it enables responsibility to be assigned. It also permits management by exception. This is the practice of giving attention only to those situations in which large variances occur, thus allowing management to devote time to solving problems in the business not just routine supervision of subordinates. Variance analysis is an important tool which every business person whether accountant, manager, department foreman, or marketing person should be familiar with. Variances affect everyone, every product, and all inventories.
