Fri 21 Apr
Depart from Australia on Thursday 20 April transiting in Dubai. In Dubai, you have the option of joining us for a
tour of old Dubai with dinner.
Reach Tbilisi early morning on Friday 21 April. On arrival, you will be met by our guide and accompanied to
hotel for an early check-in. Delegates who have attended the Land of Fire – Azerbaijan Pre-Tour will arrive in
Tbilisi in the afternoon. After a rest, we will embark on a short drive around the city centre before our dinner
accompanied with a folklore show.

DAY 2
Tbilisi – Sadakhlo/Bagratashen border – Dzoraget (Armenia)
Sat 22 Apr
After breakfast, we will have a short city tour in Tbilisi. Start at Metekhi Church and the equestrian statue of King
Vakhtang Gorgasali, the legendary founder of Tbilisi. Later take cable car to Narikala Fortress for breathtaking
panoramic view of Tbilisi. Walk down to Abanotubani, the district of the bath houses passing by the only
mosque in Tbilisi. Stroll through the Sharden area of winding old alleyways full with cozy cafés, wine tasting bars,
souvenir shops and breathe in the living past. Visit Sioni Cathedral, Anchiskhati Basilica of St Mary and the clock
tower of the famous Rezo Gabriadze Theatre.
In the afternoon, we will transfer to the Georgian-Armenian border and after border formalities drive to our
hotel in Dzoraget, Armenia where we will be staying for two nights.

After lunch, drive through the Lori region, home to the UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Haghpat and Sanahin
monasteries, which are considered to be the jewels of medieval Armenian architecture.

Dzoraget – Haghartsin – Lake Sevan – Sevanavank – Yerevan
Mon 24 Apr
After breakfast, depart for Yerevan. On the way to Yerevan we will tour Dilijan, fondly referred to by the locals
as the "Armenian Switzerland". Here, we will visit one of Armenia's most popular monasteries, Haghartsin, nestled
in lush forested mountains. We will then travel to the Sevanavank Monastery for a great view of Lake Sevan.
On arrival in Yerevan, we will check in at our hotel and in the evening enjoy our welcome dinner.

DAY 5

After lunch, proceed to sightseeing in Yerevan. One of the oldest cities of the world, Yerevan is famous as a
pink city and calls visitors with its humble and at the same time splendid landscapes. Start city tour visiting The
Cascade which affords visitors unobstructed views of central Yerevan and Mount Ararat.
Our next spot is Matenadaran – the Mesrop Mashtots Institute of Ancient Manuscripts – famous for being one
of the world’s richest repositories of medieval manuscripts. Our last stop will be at the Armenian Genocide
Memorial & Museum, which commemorates the mass murder of Armenians in the Ottoman Empire from 1915
to 1922, and undoubtedly offers a powerful museum experience…

Today is at leisure OR you can join us on an exciting day trip.

This morning, we will visit the pristine Temple of Garni, the only known colonnaded temple in Armenia, saved
from the Hellenistic period. From here, we will do a short hike to the fortified walls and ruins of the Havuts Tar
Monastery. The walled enclosure preserves a rich trove of inscriptions and carvings from earlier times, as well
as vaulted guest rooms.
DAY 8
Yerevan – Areni – Tatev – Goris

After breakfast, we head towards Goris making a stop at Areni, known for producing the famous Armenian
pomegranate and apricot wine. Have a wine degustation in a local winery.
Drive on to the Tatev Monastery. Approaching the jewel of medieval Armenian architecture, on the world’s
longest aerial tramway, we will see the monastery, the powerful impregnable stronghold towering on a rock.
The Monastery’s remote position was strategically favorable as it was simultaneously a religious and political
centre of the region. Standing on the edge of the rock, the monastery takes your breath away: somewhere
down below the river flows in the valley and crowded velvet green hills stand in silence…

DAY 9
Goris – Karahunj – Noravank – Khor Virap – Yerevan
Sat 29 Apr
After breakfast, we will head back to Yerevan. On the way, we will visit the Karahunj Observatory believed to
be 3,500 years older than the Stonehenge and referred to in the international tourist lore as the Armenian
Stonehenge.
We will then visit one of the most spectacular tourist attractions in Armenia, the Noravank, situated on a ledge
of a deep winding gorge and standing amidst the bizarre-shaped precipitous red cliffs. Our last stop today is
at the Khor Virap Monastery, which with its iconic location at the foot of Mt Ararat allows you to enjoy the
Mount’s best views.
This evening we will enjoy our farewell dinner.
DAY 10
Yerevan – Departure

After breakfast, delegates undertaking the Incredible Iran Post-Tour 1 will be transferred to the airport for their
flight to Tehran.
In the afternoon, delegates heading back to Australia will be transferred to the airport for their flight home via
Dubai arriving Australia on Monday 1 May (delegates from Perth will reach home on Tuesday 2 May). (B)

….. Azerbaijan is a tangle of contradictions and contrasts. Neither Europe nor Asia, it's a nexus of ancient historical empires, but also a ‘new’ nation
rapidly transforming itself with a super-charged gust of petro-spending. The cosmopolitan capital, Baku, rings a UNESCO-listed ancient core with dazzling
21st-century architecture and sits on the oil-rich Caspian Sea. In the surrounding semi-desert are mud volcanoes and curious fire phenomena. Yet barely three
hours’ drive away, timeless rural villages, clad in lush orchards and backed by the soaring Great Caucasus mountains are a dramatic contrast.

Depart from Australia on Wednesday 12 April transiting in Dubai. In Dubai, you have the option of joining us for
a tour of old Dubai with dinner.
Reach Baku early morning on Thursday 13 April. On arrival, you will be met by our guide and accompanied to
your hotel for an early check-in.
The rest of the morning is free to relax. In the afternoon, we will visit the Azerbaijan Carpet Museum and the
Azerbaijan State History Museum and later enjoy our first dinner together.

Fri 14 Apr
After lunch, we will tour the UNESCO World Heritage-listed medieval walled city, founded on a site inhabited since
the Palaeolithic period. Still surrounded by much of its 12th century defensive walls, the old city is a fascinating mix
of narrow, winding alleyways, mosques, caravanserais and overhanging wooden balconies. We will visit
fascinating historical sites in the ‘Inner City’ including the Shirvanshah’s Palace and the most ancient monument
here – the Maiden Tower – symbol of the city of Baku.
In the evening, we will enjoy a boat trip in the waters of the city’s bay for an excellent opportunity to admire the
view of Baku.

The rest of the day is at leisure to explore Baku including its fascinating historical and modern buildings and
bazaars.

Baku – Gobustan – Baku
Sun 16 Apr
After breakfast, we will visit Gobustan. A UNESCO World Heritage site, Gobustan is rich in archaeological
monuments with over 6000 rock engravings dating back as far as 40,000 years. But Gobustan is equally well
known for its mud volcanoes that simmer and belch muddy bubbles from their cones creating an incredibly
atmospheric place.
After lunch, we will head to the Absheron Peninsula for a visit to the Fire Worshippers’ temple and the eternally
burning mountain – Yanar Dag.

DAY 5
Baku – Lahij – Gabala
Mon 17 Apr
Today, we will transfer to Gabala situated at the foot of the Caucasus, enjoying the dramatic mountain scenery
on our way. We will make a stop at Lahij - one of the most ancient human settlements in Azerbaijan and notable
for its artisans.

DAY 6
Gabala – Sheki

We will spend the morning visiting highlights of the scenic Gabala, which abounds with rich and ancient history.
For 600 years, it was the capital of Caucasian Albania and up to the present time ruins of the ancient city and
the main gate of Caucasian Albania exist. The village of Nidj is still inhabited by the direct descendants of the
ancient Caucasian Albanians.
The historic town of Sheki, for centuries, has been an important market town on the trans-Caucasus trading
routes. A delightful town to wander around, with winding streets and traditional houses giving the feeling of
yesteryear, Sheki is Azerbaijan's true travel gem.

This morning, we drive to the picturesque mountain town of Kish with its beautiful Albanian church and then
head to Ganja, one of the oldest cities in the Caucasus. Upon arrival, we will visit its intriguing local bazaar, the
17th century Shah Abbas mosque and the quirky ‘bottle house’ created entirely out of glass bottles combining a
collector's spirit with an artist's flair!
In the evening we will arrive at Naftalan, home to the crude oil spas!

After lunch, we will start our city tour. The first visit will be to the Treasury of National Jewels with its superb
display of items collected by the Iranian monarchy from the 16th century on. Later, we will visit the National
Museum of Iran which houses a marvellous collection from excavations at Persepolis and other places in Iran
and the Glass & Ceramics Museum, housed in a beautiful Qajar-era building, with exhibits dating from the 2nd
millennium BC to the modern day.

Tue 2 May
After breakfast, we will start our touring from the Sa’d Abad Museum Complex, the royal summer home during
the Pahlavi period, and onto the Niavaran Palace, the primary residence of the last Shah and the Empress
Farah until the Iranian Revolution. We will visit the Reza Abbasi Museum for its fine collection of ceramics, fabrics,
decorative arts and the Achaemenid and Sassanian gold and silver. Our last visit today will be to the jewel of the
Qajar-period architecture – The Gulistan Palace.

Tehran – Kashan – Abyaneh – Isfahan

After breakfast, we will transfer to Isfahan. On our way to Isfahan, we will stop in Kashan, where we will visit a
beautiful historical mansion and Bagh-e-Fin, perhaps the most picturesque of the classical Persian gardens. Later
on, we will visit the historical Abyaneh, a small picturesque village dating back 1600 years.
In the evening, we will arrive in Isfahan for a three-night stay.

There is a famous saying, ‘Isfahan nisf jahan’, Isfahan is half of the World! Here in Isfahan, we will experience
the imperial majesty of the monumental capital of the Safavid Persia. After lunch, our touring of this beautiful city
starts when we will have the opportunity to visit some of the greatest examples of Iranian Islamic architecture.
We will begin from the vast square called the Naqsh-e-Jahan (Imam) Square surrounding which are buildings
from the Safavid era: Ali Qapu Pavilion, the Shaikh Lutfollah Mosque, the monumental entrance to the Grand
Bazaar and the immense tiled bulk of the Imam Mosque. The great works of the royal city also include the tiled
bridges and the palace pavilions of Kakh-e Chehel Sutun and Hasht Behesht.

This morning, we will continue our touring of Isfahan covering some of the sights mentioned in Day 5 followed
by a visit of the Isfahan’s Armenian quarter - New Jolfa.

After breakfast, delegates who are heading back to Australia will depart for Tehran. On the way to Tehran, we

After breakfast, we will start our journey from Isfahan towards Shiraz visiting Pasargadae on the way. At
Pasargadae, we will see the ruins of the first Persian capital built by Cyrus the Great remain.
In the evening, we will reach Shiraz, well regarded as Iran’s capital of culture and history, enjoying its refined and
understated elegance over a four-night stay.

After breakfast, we have a full day touring of the city of splendid gardens including the UNESCO World Heritagelisted Bagh-e Eram and Bagh-e Naranjestan, the latter providing the setting for the opulently-decorated
Naranjastan-e Qavam pavilion.
We will visit the Nasir-al-Mulk Mosque, one of the most elegant and photographed mosques in southern Iran,
the serene theological college, Madraseh-ye Khan, and the evocative tombs of two of the world’s greatest
poets – Hafez and Sa’di. We will finish the day with a visit to the city’s ancient bazaars, the finest and most
famous of these being the Bazar-e Vakil and also Seray-e Moshir and Shamshirgarha Bazaar.
DAY 3

After breakfast, we have an excursion to the UNESCO World Heritage-listed site of Persepolis, the spectacular
ceremonial city built by Darius I and Xerxes in the 5th and 4th centuries BC embodying the greatest successes of
the ancient Achaemenid Empire and also its final demise.
In the afternoon, we will continue to the Achaemenid royal tombs cut into the cliffs at Naqsh-e-Rustam and
Naqsh-e-Rajab.

Shiraz – Firuzabad
Tue 9 May
After breakfast, we have a full day excursion to Firuzabad with a scenic drive past the Maharlu Lake and the
impressive cliff top Dokhtar Castle, built by Ardashir I. Here, we will visit ruins of the Sassanid palaces and the
ancient city of Ardashir-Khurra, commemorating the founder of the Sassanian dynasty, Ardashir.
DAY 5

Shiraz – Yazd
Wed 10 May
This morning, we will be transferred to Yazd, home to Iran’s second-largest population of Zoroastrians. En route
we will stop at the small town of Abarkuh famous for its ancient cypress tree. With a height of 25 m and
circumference of 18 m, the Cypress of Abarkuh is a national natural monument and estimated to be over four
millennia old! Approaching Yazd, we will visit the Zoroastrian funerary Towers of Silence.

Thu 11 May
With its winding lanes and forest of wind catchers, the ancient caravan city of Yazd is enchanting with unique
architecture. We will visit the Friday Mosque with its spectacularly tiled entrance portal, one of the tallest in Iran,
the Zoroastrian Fire Temple, Amir Chakhmaq Complex and one of the best-preserved Qajar-era houses in Yazd
– Khan-e Lari. We will enjoy a visit to Bagh-e Dolat Abad, Yazd Water Museum where we will learn about qanat,
an elaborate tunnel system used to extract groundwater for this desert city and the 15th century Alexander’s
Prison. In the evening we will visit Saheb A Zaman Club Zurkhaneh to witness its Iranian brand of body building
and enjoy its amazing venue, being inside a cavernous water reservoir built about 1580.

Yazd – Tehran
Fri 12 May
This morning, we will transfer to Tehran, en route visiting the Narin castle in Meybod which dates from Sassannian
times and may well be the oldest existing mud-brick structure in Iran and other interesting historic buildings.
Later on we will stop at Na’in, long known for its handicrafts and primarily known for its carpets and camel-wool
cloaks.
On arrival in Tehran, check in at our hotel for one night.

Tehran – Departure
