“I work with an early childhood literacy program called Energizing Education. The
program uses volunteers as literacy mentors who read with students twice a week.
I’m making a training video for volunteers to watch before they attend mentor
training with our Literacy Specialist. It would serve to provide
some insight into our program, highlight the importance
of mentoring, and discuss the different strategies to use
during reading sessions. The footage I took consists of brief
interviews with the Manager, one of our Site coordinators,
and the Lliteracy Specialist.
I am far from a videographer and don’t have access to film
editing software, so the Digital Studio with its software and
services at the JDL Meijer Branch was exactly what I needed
to put my footage together and knit it into a video. The JDL
employees Anna and Chad were extremely helpful and willing to assist me with
the programs and I really appreciate their help. They were awesome!”

Slavery by Another Name
Meet ALICE in Jackson
Thursday, Nov 13, 6:30 pm
Join us on Wednesday, November 12, at 6:30 pm at
the Carnegie Library for “Slavery By Another Name,”
a documentary that reveals the new systems of
involuntary servitude that came after the Civil War. The
film documents how thousands of African Americans,
often guilty of no crime at all, were arrested, compelled
to work without pay and
repeatedly bought and sold for
more than 80 years. This forced
labor lasted well into the 20th
century.
Meet ALICE in Jackson: Asset
Limited, Income Constrained,
Employed – these are our
friends, families and neighbors.
Over 40% of working Jackson
County
households
are
struggling financially, according
to a study commissioned by the
Michigan Association of United Ways. What does this
mean for Jackson? What does this mean for you?
Following
the
documentary,
Professor Mark Edwards of
Spring Arbor University will lead
a discussion on freedom and
equality.
Ken Toll from United Way of Jackson County and Toby
Berry from Community Action Agency will introduce
us to ALICE, thanks to CMS Energy, which donated
$25,000 to the county-by-county study this year.
This program is part of the
”Created Equal” grant made
possible
by
the
National
Endowment for the Humanities, the Gilder Lehrman
Institute of American History, and Bridging Cultures.
It is co-sponsored by the Jackson Area Civil Rights
Awareness Association and the Jackson District Library.

My name is Jacqueline Barber and I’m a life long
resident of Jackson County. My husband, John, and I
are parents to four children and eleven grandchildren.
I have an Associates degree from Jackson College and
a Bachelor of Arts from Spring Arbor University.
For thirty-seven years I have been
employed at Community Action
Agency. As a Children’s Program
Manager, I oversee the daily
operation of nine Head Start/
Great Start School Readiness
Program (GSRP) early childhood
classrooms and the food service
department.
I’m
an
active
member and Trustee at Lily Missionary Baptist Church.
During my free time, I enjoy spending time with my
family and friends, tending to my flower beds (during
the summer months), walking, bike riding, attending
and teaching aerobics, reading and just spending time
at home. I’m excited and look forward to serving as a
