We are delighted to be able to take this next step towards the establishment of a Victorian Senior Community Football Championships involving most leagues in Victoria. The WorkSafe AFL Victoria Community Championships promises to be one of the most exciting initiatives within community football in 2016 and potentially for years to come as the opportunity to participate in senior representative programs continues to be a highlight for footballers in community competitions across the state. Senior representative football has been enjoyed by Victorian country leagues in the WorkSafe AFL Victoria Country Championship for many years, while metropolitan leagues have welcomed the return of representative football as part of the Metropolitan Championships since 2014. For the first time, these Championships will provide a true premier model allowing a league to be recognised as the best community football league in the state and an opportunity for metropolitan and country leagues to play against each other on a regular basis. matches will be played as curtain raisers to the Community Championships, while the first FIDA match between the Grampians Giants v Hamilton Boomers will play in front of a big crowd at Mininera as part of the newly formed AFL Victoria FIDA Western Conference. Following on from a successful 2016 Community Umpiring Round last week, I would like to congratulate all the umpires who have been selected to adjudicate in today’s matches. Their hard work, dedication and strong performances either in the V/Line Umpiring Academies or metropolitan league associations will put them in good stead to officiate community football’s top players. Lastly, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the leagues, staff, players, coaches and volunteers involved in the inaugural WorkSafe AFL Victoria Community Championships, for their enthusiasm and support in the lead up to the event. We hope that you enjoy the experience and wish you the best of luck for the remainder of the 2016 football season. Brett Connell AFL Victoria Community Football & Engagement Manager Today, a total of 36 leagues will compete in a one off head-to-head match across 18 venues around Victoria, with a further two leagues competing in their own local challenge match across the same weekend. In the initial year of the Championships, leagues have been fixtured against each other in a manner which will assist in the official ranking of leagues for 2017 and beyond. In addition to the Championships, the next generation of community football stars will also have the opportunity to don their local representative colours in the GrainCorp AFL Victoria Community Challenge. Nineteen junior U19, U18 and U15 representative 3 MPNFL Football Article THE MPNFL SHARKS ARE BACK be a great challenge for everyone involved.” For the first time in four years the Peninsula and Nepean Football Netball League will enter the AFL Victoria Community Championships under the MPNFL banner. Never the less this weekend’s game will be a high calibre standard of football and one that at the end of the day the Mornington Peninsula football community see that the MPFNL Sharks are victorious and have the chance to take the number one ranked team in next year’s AFL Victoria Community Championships. With the addition of the metropolitan leagues in the championships, AFL South East decided it would be better for the both leagues to play under the MPNFL banner to compete with the metro leagues, who have 3-4 divisions of player’s to pick from. AFL South East Leagues Manager for the Peninsula region Shaun Connell is looking forward to Saturday’s matches “This Saturday will mark a new beginning for Mornington Peninsula in representative football and netball. Now that we are all under the one banner it will give the chance for the whole community to come together on the Mornington Peninsula to support our local talent. We are certainly looking forward to the contest on Saturday with the Northern Football League to see where we sit amongst the best leagues in Victoria.” The coach of the senior side John Hynes and his assistants have carefully constructed the side to make sure that the players have all brought into representative football and will give him the 110% required in Saturdays game “Initially there was no real selection criteria, we decided to go out and select the best players for the position, and with the initial squad there was no push to make it an even spread between the two leagues, but it happened work out that way. Our final squad may have some more clubs better represented than others but we are confident we have pick the best team for the day. The boys have all brought a real positive attitude to training, there has been plenty of energy, intensity and training standards that have been off the chart which hopefully carries into this weekend’s game.” Hynes said he was looking forward to seeing some of the younger talent like Credlin, Santon, Sutton and McGenniss but was most looking forward to was watching the team play “The Coaching staff and myself probably like the rest of the football community are really keen to see how this team plays and works together. It has been an enjoyable journey so far, and I have been looking forward to this weekend since being appointed. After last year falling to an agonising fivepoint defeat to the Victorian Amateur Football Association (VAFA) at Ikon Park, Hyde said the NFL’s squad was committed to securing a better result this year. The NFL will have its hands full on Saturday when it takes on the best of the Mornington Peninsula Nepean Football League at Rye’s R.J Rowley Reserve. But Hyde said he was confident the NFL squad assembled would more than be up to the task on enemy territory. “I’ve found last year and this year the blokes who are picked really want to play and are really proud about representing the Northern Football League,” Hyde said. “They come out and do extra training and make the time commitment. They want to represent our league, plus themselves, plus their club for a whole lot of reasons. It’s exciting for that. “The basis of the squad have been there every night right from the start and have made a commitment to be part of it.” A host of injuries in recent weeks has forced a number of key players out of the NFL’s team for this weekend’s clash. However, Hyde said he was confident the 24 players selected to take on the MPNFL would represent the league with distinction. highlighting the evenness of the league’s top flight competition. Hyde said he was also looking forward to watching Fitzroy Stars midfielder Peter Hood, who has impressed on the training track. “I didn’t realise how good a player he is,” Hyde said. “I watch him on the track and he never misses a target and he’s a genuinely nice guy. It’s great to have him in the team. He’s an exciting player.” The NFL will be led by Montmorency midfielder Jesse Donaldson and Bundoora ruckman Matthew Dennis. Both are highly decorated players and have featured in the NFL representative team over the past two years, as well as representing Vic Metro. A two-time premiership player with the Bulls, Dennis tied for the league’s Division 1 best and fairest – the Frank Rosbrook Medal – in 2012, while Donaldson was crowned the Division 1 Coaches Player of the Year in 2014. “Through my involvement last year, and knowing them from around the traps, they’ve been very good players and role models for their club and for the league for a very long period of time,” Hyde said. “As I said to the group, there are half a dozen to eight people I could have selected as captain. “I think it’s great reward for both and they’re two terrific I blokes. They are super keen at training to represent the NFL.” Keep up with the latest from the NFL: “It’s a very versatile squad. I think our midfield is our strength,” Hyde said. Web – www.nfl.org.au “We’ve got to eight to 10 players we think we can roll through the wings and the midfield, and they can also play half back and half forward. Facebook League Twitter - @northernfl – facebook.com/NorthernFootball- “They’ve all presented really well and are enthusiastic and that’s all I really care about “I think it’s more about the way we play and the way we approach the game. We want to go out and play our best footy.” All 10 of the NFL’s Division 1 clubs look set to have at least one representative in the team, 5 MPNFL Under 19 Jumper Colour: Short Colour: Coach: Assistant Coach: Assistant Coach: Team Manager: Runner: Gold / Navy White Stephen Brattle Neil Craig Pat Ryan Colin Armstrong Callum Armstrong No.Player Age Height Weight Club 5 Jack Wells 18 178 73 Mornington 6 Joel Bateman 18 180 70 Langwarrin 7 Mason Russell 18 176 76 Karingal 8 Zane Merdanovic 18 179 75 Karingal 9 Brad Occipinti 19 179 78 Karingal 10 Jake O’Neil 18 186 66 Edithvale-Aspendale 11 Jordan Davey 18 185 80 Edithvale-Aspendale 12 Brad Kiely 19 179 75 Pines 13 Bradley Harding 18 180 80 Mornington 14 Sam Hallpike 18 187 78 Mt Eliza 15 Patrick Coates 17 185 86 Mt Eliza 16 Luke Paynter 17 187 80 Frankston YCW 17 Majok Puok 1819281Pines 18 Ryan Smyth 19 191 80 Langwarrin 19 Jacob Boyle 17 186 70 Pines 20 Jordan Capkin 18 194 86 Mt Eliza 21 Matthew Peynenborg 17 187 85 Langwarrin 22 Nick Carlon 17 188 77 Edithvale-Aspendale 23 Corey Edmunds 18 187 72 Chelsea 24 Joshua Butland 17 187 85 Frankston YCW 25 Bailey Williams 17 186 95 Frankston YCW 26 Lachlan Street 17 188 88 Frankston YCW 27 Harper Leonard 18 186 82 Mt Eliza 28 Ryan O’Dell 18 183 80 Mornington 29 Tom Hogan 16 194 74 Bonbeach 30 Beau Bailey 18 175 67 Bonbeach 6 G B NFL Under 19 Jumper Colour: Short Colour: Coach: Assistant Coach: Team Manager: No.Player 1 Cooper Perrin 2 Jackson Freebairn 3 Kyle Green 4 Mark Pavlovski 5 Corey Middleton 7 Corey Sleep 8 Sean Desmond 9 Lachlan Wilson 10 Anthony Capeci 11 Jason Stavely 12 Clancy Bland 14 Mitch Hill 15 Tom Simpson 16 Reid Brandt 18 Khodr Waari 19 Liam Gray 20 Luke Wilson 22 Dale Marshall 23 Rad Dyson 24 Jordan Sacco 25 Beau Moorcroft 26 Kyan Watson 28 Ben Pannam 30 Ben Nesci 36 Kallum Hinchcliffe 38 Blake Dillon Age Height Weight 18 183 70 19 172 86 17 170 65 17 172 78 18 181 84 17 185 95 18 174 76 18 188 79 18 183 70 18 175 67 18 190 83 18 187 80 19 182 85 19 182 85 18 183 90 19 187 80 19 185 85 19 178 77 18 177 84 18 173 75 17 169 72 17 178 70 19 177 78 18 190 75 19 178 73 19 195 85 White Navy Rod Cann Mark Muscat Ron McKeown Club Bundoora Lalor North Heidelberg Bundoora Epping Lower Plenty St Mary’s Heidelberg South Morang Epping Whittlesea Greensborough Hurstbridge Macleod West Preston-Lakeside Mernda Whittlesea Bundoora Hurstbridge Lower Plenty Bundoora Montmorency Greensborough South Morang Lower Plenty Montmorency G B 7 MPNFL Senior Player Profiles 1- Tim McGenniss: Co-captain of Somerville and last year’s MVP in the Nepean FNL. Both squads are representing the MPNFL but have been selected on league, with the Peninsula FNL netballer’s taking on the Northern NL and the Nepean FNL taking on the AFL Yarra Ranges. For the Peninsula netballer’s it will be a fantastic chance for the girls show their best against the Northern Netball League who will be full of confidence after coming off a win against the SFNL just last week in the lead up to this game. Last year there wasn’t a netball component when taking on Oven’s and Murray but there will be some serious netball talent that will be on display too which will give the squad full confidence for Saturday’s game. Plenty of fire power with shooters Heenan (YCW), Bennett (Karingal) and Patterson (Edi-Asp). Robertson (Seaford), Anwyl (Mt Eliza), Camilleri (Mt Eliza) and J.Hosking (Karingal) will provide the zip in the mid court while the Jayde duo of Mason (Mt Eliza) and Aron (Karingal) will hold up the defence. The Nepean netballer’s last year had the victory over Riddle and District but this year go into the game against AFL Yarra Ranges with a different looking side compared their 2015 campaign. 5 of the 12 clubs are represented in this year’s team and like Peninsula FNL can boast about some quality netball players in the team. They will certainly need to bring their A games as the AFL Yarra Rangers have a strong netball competition. A strong defence will be the key and it’s reflected in the squad with Harris (Crib Point), De Hey & McDonald (Devon Meadows). Along with a solid defence we will see Duncan (Rye) and Douglas (Crib Point) streaming through the Mid Court with Mann (Tyabb) and Wappett (Crib Point) to finish off the hard work in goals. Both squads will represent the MPNFL and their club well, and we all look forward to seeing a winning result at the end of the day for both games. 13 NFL Netball Article NNL LOOKING TO CONTINUE WINNING STREAK Northern Netball League coach Sharon Ashworth says the league’s two interleague sides are ready to uphold their strong representative record. The NNL last Friday maintained its unbeaten interleague record, scoring two commanding wins in its open and under-19 matches over the Southern Football Netball League at Parade College. The two sides will take the court again this Saturday when they travel to Rye to play the Mornington Peninsula Nepean Football Netball League (MPNFL). Ashworth, coach of the NNL’s under-19 team, said the league’s two teams were looking to maintain the league’s undefeated representative record. “The pressure is on and we need to uphold our good record,” Ashworth said. “(This year) is the first time we’ve got under-19s in and we’ve got a really strong side. Not taking anything away from the open team, but the under19s is so new because it’s the first time we’ve had them in. “To get the opportunity to play out and about in front of others and to be recognised for their skill, just to be put on the broader arena to be recognised, is a really fantastic opportunity.” Ashworth is this year joined in the coaching panel by Bundoora’s Jacinta Tonkin – who is coaching the NNL’s open age team – while Diamond Creek’s Brooke George will assist both teams. Adding to the leadership group, Stacey Gannon will captain the open-age team, while Kourtnee Baird will lead the under-19 side. Ashworth said the leadership qualities displayed by both girls made them standout candidates to lead their respective sides. “They’re great talkers, they have great on-court leadership and are really good assets to the overall team,” Ashworth said. “Reputation has got a lot to do with it, as well as the leadership qualities that they bring to the team. Even through tryouts and training, the leadership qualities that they bring showed through. “I think that’s got a lot to say about why they’ve both been selected as captains of their respective teams.” In particular, she nominated North Heidelberg’s Bec Colwell and under-19 stars Beth Garlick and 14 Georgia Bowkett as players to watch. “When you’ve got height on your side, like Bec’s got, it’s a real asset,” Ashworth said. “Even at training we were just standing there as coaches thinking ‘how do you stop her?’ If the ball is delivered to her, as it will be when you’ve got Stacey Gannon and the Diamond Creek girls delivering to perfection to her, she can’t miss. “In the under-19s, I’ve got two great tall defenders (Beth Garlick and Georgia Bowkett) that are both playing VNL as well, which I think will bring a lot to the side.” Colwell was the dominant player on the court in the NNL’s open win over the SFNL last Friday, taking advantage of clean passing from Stacey Gannon, Bronwyn Taylor and Isabelle Conroy. Colwell shot 42 goals in three quarters to win the best on court medallion in the 81-54 triumph. Under-19 captain Baird was named best on court in her side’s 54-35 win, putting in a fantastic performance at centre and wing defence. Eloise Whitcroft also enjoyed a strong game at goal attack, putting through 30 of the NNL’s 54 goals, including 18 goals in the second half. With the opportunity to again display their skills on the big stage, Ashworth said both sides were raring to go. “They’ve all come together and know we’ve got something to prove here,” she said. “We’re playing for the Northern Netball League and the old rivalries have gone out the window. We’re playing as one.” 15 Under 19 Netball Teams MPNFL UNDER-19 INTERLEAGUE TEAM NNL UNDER-19 INTERLEAGUE TEAM Coach – Jess Hosking Coach – Sharon Ashworth Assistant Coach – Brooke George Brooke Cant - Frankston YCW - C Mid-Court player with quick and clean passing.
