T
he colourful Annapolis Royal/Port-Royal Area has been welcoming visitors since 1604. In fact the Order of Good Cheer, North America’s first social
club, was started here in 1606. The same attributes that Champlain saw over 400 years ago continue to make this a “must see” destination
for discerning travelers. Although quite safe and peaceful today, Annapolis Royal holds the distinction of being the most fought over tract of land in Canada.
With over 130 registered heritage properties and 4 National Historic Sites, picturesque Annapolis Royal is one of Canada’s largest National Historic Districts.
It is also one of the oldest permanent European settlements in North America.
EXPLORE ~ Canada’s Roots
Imagine over four centuries of history coming to life before your very eyes. The Mi’kmaq, Scottish, French, British, Acadian, Loyalist, New England Planter
and African Canadian cultures intertwined to form a colourful mosaic unparalleled in the nation. Canada’s roots are deep here. The area served as colonial
capital for both the French and British before Louisbourg and Halifax. Even our province’s name, Nova Scotia, (Latin for “New Scotland”) is attributed to the
Scottish attempt to colonize our area (1621-1632). The Scots also gave us our Nova Scotia Flag and Coat of Arms and built Charles Fort on the grounds where
Fort Anne is located today. The rich Acadian (”Cajun”) story also started here when French families settled on our scenic shores in the 1630s. The Annapolis
Royal/Port-Royal Area is known as the cradle of Acadie, and there are over 3,000,000 Acadian descendants worldwide.
EXPERIENCE ~ The Best of Both Worlds
Couple the rich cultural heritage with a moderate climate tempered by the Gulf Stream, then add spectacular scenery, gardens, lakes, rivers, wilderness trails,
numerous eco-tourism adventures and the world-famous Bay of Fundy with the highest tides on earth – you get an explorer’s paradise. The region is also part
of UNESCO’s Southwest Biosphere Reserve in recognition of its globally significant ecological and cultural landscape and commitment to sustainable
development and conservation. (There are only 16 such regions in Canada.) Escape into nature, relax, and invigorate your body, mind and soul. Whether you prefer
petals, pedals or paddles, are a history buff or nature lover, the Timeless Annapolis Royal Area offers the best of both worlds and a bouquet of adventures for all ages.
ENJOY ~ Award-Winning Hospitality & Amenities
Let the EXPLORER be your guide to award-winning accommodations, unique shopping experiences, an array of artists and craftsmen, delightful dining,
colourful gardens and art galleries, interesting museums, lively theatre, waterfront boardwalk, a multitude of fun-filled tours and attractions plus stately homes
set amidst scenic vistas. Designated as one of the “Cultural Capitals of Canada” and winner of and the “World’s Most Liveable Small Community” (endorsed
by the United Nations), Annapolis Royal has also won numerous Provincial, National and International “Communities in Bloom” awards. The area truly
blooms in more ways than one - our gardens bloom, but so do our arts, our heritage, our community spirit and our hospitality. Come explore Annapolis Royal,
and let your spirit blossom. It’s the perfect place to stop and smell the roses. What are you waiting for? After all.....“Good Cheer” started here!

Stroll Through the Centuries
One of the oldest permanent
European settlements in
Canada, Annapolis Royal is
also one of the country’s largest
National Historic Districts. It
was a Mi’kmaw encampment
site 3,600 years before the
arrival of Europeans.
Port-Royal
In 1605 the area was settled
by a small group of French
explorers two years before
Jamestown, Virginia, three years
before the founding of Quebec,
and fifteen years before the
Pilgrims landed at Plymouth,
Massachusetts. Led by Samuel
de Champlain and Sieur de
Mons, the French named the
new land Port Royal and built
the Habitation as a center for
operations in Acadia.
In 1606 this creative group
formed the “Order of Good
Cheer,” North America’s first
social club. For entertainment,
a young Parisian lawyer, Marc
Lescarbot, wrote and produced
“The Theatre of Neptune”, the
first European drama in North
America. He also wrote one of
the first travel books about his
experiences in Port-Royal.

depicts 4 centuries of the area’s
colourful history. Picture a myriad of
95 different shades of Persian wool
interwoven and stitched to form an
historic tableau unparalleled in all of
Canada. Reflect upon the patience
required to complete over 3 million
delicate needlepoint stitches.
Ponder the efforts of over 100
volunteers from a community
taking pride in its 400 year history,
and doing something about it.
That’s the incredible story behind
the Heritage Tapestry.
Measuring approximately 18
feet in length and 8 feet in height,
the tapestry was a labor of love over
4 years in the making. It is a unique
work of immense proportions, but

HISTORIC
The Annapolis Royal Area has
had many names through the years.
Originally called “Te’wapskik”
(flowing waters) by the native
Mi’kmaq, Champlain named the
area “Port-Royal” because he was
struck by the beauty of this
sheltered harbour. “Polis” is Greek
for city, so Annapolis Royal, named
in 1710 in honour of Queen Anne,
means the “Royal City of Anne”.
SCENIC
Nestled in the pretty Annapolis
Valley between the Annapolis and
Allain Rivers, Annapolis Royal is
located only minutes away from the
world-famous Bay of Fundy.
Known for the highest tides
and some of the most dramatic
coastal seascapes in the world, the
Bay of Fundy was 1 of the 28 world
finalists, and Canada’s only entry,
in the global contest to name the
New 7 Wonders of Nature.
FUN
The Annapolis Basin is a very
popular spot for fishing, and there
are picturesque lakes nearby, perfect
for swimming, kayaking, canoeing,
hiking and bird-watching. Whale
watching is also just a short drive
away. Eco-tourism combined with
its laid-back lifestyle and friendly
hospitality make the scenic Annapolis
Royal Area an explorer’s paradise.

COME BACK TO “LIVE!”
Winner of “The World’s Most

was also recently featured in “This

for one-of-a-kind, period houses.
Whether you spend a day, vacation

Whale Watching
Whale watching adventures
await you about an hours drive
from Annapolis Royal from June to
Sept. The Bay of Fundy’s great
tides create a rich ecosystem that
supports abundant wildlife, whales
and seabirds. The waters off the
mouth of the Bay of Fundy, from
Brier Island up to Digby Neck, are
important feeding areas. Enjoy
minke, humpback and fin whales,
harbour porpoise and Atlantic
white-sided dolphins. Right whales
are often seen. Sperm, sei, orca and
blue whales have also been spotted.
Humpback whales, “ clowns of
the sea,” are the most likely to be
seen. They breech (jump out of the
water), flipper slap and tail lob the
most (bring the tail out of the water
and slap it on the water). They also
spy hop, coming out of the water
nose first, to look at people.
Finbacks are some of the largest
at 60-80 feet, second only to the
Blue. Minkes are the smallest of the
group of whales in the Bay at about
30 feet in length. They are quite
friendly and often come close to the
boats to delight visitors. You might
even see the rare North Atlantic Right
whale. Only about 350 are still living.
Along with whales, you may
also encounter seals, dolphins and
harbour porpoises. The two kinds
of seals most often seen are Grey
and Harbour. The Grey Seal is the
larger and has a noticeably square
head. Harbour Porpoise are the
most abundant. At times, whitesided dolphins run with the boat,
swimming playfully along side,
jumping in and out of the water.
This area of the Bay of Fundy is
located on the Atlantic Flyway, a
major migration route for many
species of sea birds, shorebirds and
waterfowl. Birdwatching is a special
added plus with Puffins, Gannets,
Cormorants, Shearwaters, Petrels
and Ducks, both common Elders
and American Blacks.

The O’Dell House Museum, is a
remnant of the economic prosperity
brought to the community by the railroad and also international shipping
interests during the Victorian period.
Built by Cory O’Dell, a former Nova
Scotia Pony Express rider, it was
originally used as a stagecoach inn
and tavern and the first stop for many
travelers getting off the ferry from
Granville Ferry. Remains of the old
ferry slip can still be seen at low tide.
The museum is displayed as a
Victorian inn and tavern on the main
floor. Various contemporary museum

King’s Theatre
King’s Theatre has been a
popular area landmark since 1921.
It’s roots, however, go back to 1606
when Marc Lescarbot produced “The
Theatre of Neptune” mainly as a
diversion for the band of adventurers
at Port Royal, to be followed in later
years by various performances by
traveling troupes and roving thespians
in this bustling seaport town.
A vital force in the life of the
community, historic King’s Theatre
entertains the area year-round with
an impressive schedule showcasing
local, national and international talent
in a delightful mix of live theatre,
music and dance. It also features
current movies and classic films.
During the summer months, King’s
Theatre spotlights local artists in

Sinclair Inn Museum
The Sinclair Inn Museum is a
National Historic Site and one of
Canada’s architectural and historic
gems. Portions date to 1710 or earlier,
making it one of the oldest surviving
wood-frame structures in Canada.
One of the few dwellings from the
French regime in Acadia (prior to
1713) in existence, it offers a
unique opportunity to view original
Acadian construction techniques.
The current building combines
two older ones joined in 1781 by
Fredrick Sinclair. It has operated
under many names and owners,
primarily as an inn and tavern. Site
of the first Masonic Lodge meeting
in Canada in 1738, the building has
witnessed many important events.
You can see over 300 years of
construction styles and techniques,
from the clay walls of the original
Acadians to wood paneling of the
1950s. Modern-day ghosts and
new exhibits with QR codes are a
testament to the on-going legacy of
Annapolis Royal’s inhabitants.

Artists' Studios Tour
The Annapolis Royal region is
steeped in rich tradition dating back
over 10,000 years to the Mi’kmaq
First Nations people. The European
influence began over four centuries
ago as the Area became the seat of
Canada’s first enduring European
settlement. The region continues to
evolve and flourish today, attracting
creative artists and art aficionados
of all ages.
ARCAC, (Annapolis Region
Community Arts Council), is one of
the Cultural Centres in the province
designated by NS Department of
Tourism & Culture. It hosts a vibrant
year round schedule of workshops,
classes, concerts, coffee house
evenings, readings, slide shows,
talks and special events. Through
their Scholarship Fund, they assist
students of all ages who wish to
pursue art-related courses of study.
ARCAC also helps coordinate
arts resources in the region and
operates ARTsPLACE, an artist-run
gallery which is open year ‘round.
The Annapolis Area has a large
representation of artists in all of the
arts disciplines including visual
arts, crafts, performing arts and
literary arts. To meet some of these
multi-talented artists in person and
visit their studios is a highlight.
The following tour showcases
just a few of the area’s artists and
galleries. (Maps p.14, 15 and 24.)

Port-Royal NHS, North Hills Museum, Delaps Cove Wilderness Trail and the Bay of Fundy are “must see” Annapolis Royal Area attractions.
Annapolis Royal to
Granville Ferry
About a half mile past the Tidal
Power Plant, make a sharp left to
take a journey along Canada’s Oldest
Settlement Road and enjoy a Fundy
Coast adventure. In Granville Ferry
you'll discover many picturesque
homes, several of which are B&Bs
and artists’ studios. Parking areas
offer scenic vistas of Annapolis
Royal across the river. Another half
mile after you pass Granville Ferry
you’ll find North Hills Museum.
North Hills Museum
Operated jointly by the Nova
Scotia Museum and the Annapolis
Heritage Society, North Hills is one
of the oldest houses in the province
(circa 1764). It is a small, square,
salt-box house full of many Georgian
treasures, mostly from England. It
showcases 1714 to 1830 porcelain,
1700s glassware, 1700s and 1800s
paintings and prints, plus elegantly
crafted oak, walnut and mahogany
furniture. An Acadian aboiteau from
the nearby Melanson Settlement NHS
is also on display.
Port-Royal
National Historic Site
The road continues past the
Melanson Settlement National
Historic Site, one of the best
preserved pre-deportation Acadian
archaeological sites in Canada, on
to Port-Royal NHS. The Habitation
is a reconstruction of one of the
first European settlements in North
America, founded in 1605 by Sieur
de Mons and Samuel de Champlain.
Costumed interpreters bring history
to life with period demonstrations
and descriptions of life in a 1605 fur
trading post. The first cereal crops
in the country were sown at the
Habitation, the first European drama
was written and staged in 1606, and
the Order of Good Cheer, the first
European social club held in North
America, was started to help pass
away the long winter nights. Discover
Canada’s roots, and learn about
French colonial life, May15 - Oct. 15.
Port-Royal to
Victoria Beach
Continue on to Victoria Beach,
past a scenic lighthouse and an 18th
century Anglican Church. At low
tide walk the clam flats at Thorne’s
Cove, explore old graveyards and
enjoy a gorgeous view of the Digby
Gut and Bay of Fundy. You can also
fish off the wharf at Victoria Beach,
the terminus for the Pony Express
from Halifax in the mid 1800s.
Port-Royal to
Fundy Shore
You may pick up the road to the
Fundy Shore on your way back
toward Granville Ferry from PortRoyal. Take the Hollow Mountain
Road through five miles of
woodland over the North Mountain
to the Bay of Fundy. Turn left to
Delaps Cove to enjoy an exciting
camping or hiking adventure.
Delaps Cove
Wilderness Trail
In addition to a scenic wharf
and fishing fleet in Delaps Cove,
two trails offer a wilderness escape
with panoramic vistas and access to
the Bay of Fundy. For more on Delaps
Cove Wilderness Trail, see page 19.
Delaps Cove to
Hampton
Follow the magnificent rugged
coastline of the world famous Bay
of Fundy on the Shore Road which
stretches for 20 miles from Delaps
Cove to Hampton. Winding along
the tide-carved Fundy Coast, you’ll
discover lighthouses, cobble beaches,
fishing wharves and a host of fun
activities. Whether you are seeking
artists’ studios or salt water marine
life, interested in photography or
birdwatching or searching for eco
adventures like hiking or kayaking,
you’ll find something for everyone.
After passing both Litchfield and
Hillsburn, you’ll arrive in Parkers
Cove. Immigrants from England
and Scotland settled this area in the
1600s and made their living from
the sea and forests. The community
still shows vestiges of its maritime
trade and boat building heritage. This
is the largest wharf in the area and an
active lobster fishing district today.
Fishermen schedule their work
around the 30-foot tides because
the harbour is dry a portion of each
day. At low tide, you can even walk
on the bottom of the Bay of Fundy

floor and investigate inter-tidal
marine life. If your visit is not at low
tide, you may see the fishing fleet
unloading their catch or do a little
fishing of your own. The nearby
seafood market will even cook your
lobster for a picnic on the wharf.
Continue east to picturesque
Hampton, passing Young’s Cove
and Phinney Cove. On Friday
nights you can often join in the fun
of a local musical “jam session” at
Young’s Cove Community Hall. In
Hampton, turn left off of the Shore
Rd. following the signs to Hampton
Beach. Before you reach the beach
and wharf, a great spot for mackerel
fishing and spectacular sunsets,
you’ll see the Hampton Lighthouse
(circa 1911) on your right.
Originally lit by kerosene, the light
keeper traveled from the village
each night to light the lamp. Climb
the tower for a bird’s-eye view of
bait sheds at the edge of the
protected harbour and the long
gravel beach near the wharf. There
are two tidal, cobble beaches here
for swimming and beach combing.
Hampton to Bridgetown
to Annapolis Royal
From Hampton, re-cross the
scenic North Mountain to Valleyview
Provincial Park for a spectacular
view, picnic tables and washrooms.
Continue south through farms and
orchards to Bridgetown. Return to
Annapolis on Hwy. 1 to enjoy Action
Jax Family Fun Park, or take #201
for the Tupperville School Museum.

Attractions Canada Provincial
Award Winner and Crystal Tourism
Award of Excellence recipient from
the Tourism Industry Association
of
Nova Scotia, the Historic
Gardens is a special showcase of
gardening methods and plant
species. Renowned as one of
Canada’s finest, the Historic
Gardens delights visitors of all ages
with themed gardens, colourful
collections and unique displays.
Located in Annapolis Royal,
an area rich in heritage, and home
of the first permanent European
settlement in Canada, the Gardens
is situated in one of the first
cultivated areas in North America.
From its picturesque setting
overlooking the wetlands and
meadows of a tidal river valley,
the Gardens features ten acres of
display gardens and seven acres of
reclaimed marshlands, enclosed by
a dyke walk. Here visitors will
experience local history from a
horticultural perspective and the
development of gardening in Nova
Scotia: from displays of native
species, through methods of early
Acadian farming, to innovative
gardening techniques of the future.
“Stop and Smell the Roses”
and enjoy the spectacular Rose
Collection featuring some 2,000
bushes representing more than 200
cultivars. Other favourite displays
include the stunning Victorian
Garden and an 18th century
Governor’s Garden, illustrative of
the period when Annapolis Royal
was the seat of English government
in the province. The Knot Garden,
with its intricate patterns of
exquisite interlocking hedge work,
reminiscent of the 16th century, is
another highlight.
The Acadian section features a
replica of a 1671 Acadian dwelling,
complete with thatched roof, along
with a garden, orchard and dyked
land. This reconstructed example of
pre-expulsion Acadian lifestyle is
one of only a few in existence. A
sign lists the family names from the
1671 census.
The Innovative Garden is a
unique resource for the home
gardener. Visitors enjoy ideas for
garden design, plant materials and
creative gardening techniques.
The Gardens Interpretive
Centre features photo displays of
the development of the Gardens,
and highlights the Acadian heritage
of the area, including info on salt
marshes, and an 18th century
Acadian aboiteau, the large wooden
sluiceway used by Acadians to
drain water from their dyked lands.
Original pre-expulsion artifacts are
scarce which makes this so special.
The Historic Gardens is owned
and operated by a non-profit
charitable organization. Admission
fees go toward operation and
maintenance of the Gardens.
Tickets are good for the entire day.
