FLOODS IN KURNOOL
In October 2009, unprecedented floods devastated Kurnool town in Andhra Pradesh and left a trail of
destruction that ravaged the town and left thousands of people homeless. Many lost not only their houses
but the entire life savings too.
TV9's response to this calamity was instantaneous. Against our clarion call for assistance, people
donated whatever they could–cash, clothing and food. We transported the food and clothing to Kurnool
and distributed it among the victims. Rs.2.66 crores was collected in the form of public cash donations.
This amount, added to the funds contributed by the A.P. State Housing Corporation, helped us construct
1,250 houses in a record time, on land identified and donated by the State Government. Not satisfied
with our efforts, we went ahead and organized a “Star Nite” at Hyderabad, which received an
overwhelming response from the public. Through ticket sales to this event, Rs.6.42 crores was collected
and we contributed the entire amount to the CM's Flood Relief Fund.
Our proactive efforts were appreciated by the State Government as well as the public and we, in turn, were
gratified that we accomplished our mission to help lakhs of people get back on their feet and pick up their
lives again.

SAVING LITTLE HEARTS
Tv9 initiated a social campaign, “Saving Little Hearts” in 2004 to assist children with congenital heart
disease. It is one of the most common birth defects and a leading cause for death in children during the
first year of their lives. Unless corrected through prompt surgery, children born with a congenital heart
condition live a handicapped life and usually die at an early age.
We carried promos and scrolls on our channel. Through the initiative, we raised funds that helped 3,000
children across Andhra Pradesh. We initiated tie-ups with hospitals and heart specialists who successfully
performed the life-saving surgeries on the children.
It is estimated that around 40,000 children are born with a heart defect every year. Without corrective
surgery, these children are prone to experience recurrent breathing difficulty, chest infections and
pulmonary hypertension in their future.
Tv9 is proud to have been at the forefront of an initiative that not only enlightened the public at large but
also provided financial and infrastructural assistance to children to overcome their life-threatening
condition.

THE FIGHT AGAINST FLOUROSIS
Tv9 exposed the issue of flourosis in Nalgonda and Mahabubnagar districts of Andhra Pradesh in 2004.
Flourosis results in bent or stooped backs, deformed feet, and pitted enameled teeth leaving the afflicted
to suffer in lifelong misery. We initiated a well-orchestrated campaign, which highlighted how the people
in these districts were affected due to the excessive fluoride content in the water they drank.
The WHO standard for fluoride content in drinking water is 1.5mg/litre. A team of doctors and scientists
from National Institute of Nutrition and the Geological Survey of India, sent to measure the fluoride
content observed that fluoride in Nalgonda was 4 times more than the normal. They reported that the
overall prevalence of skeletal flourosis in Nalgonda was 25% while dental flourosis stood at 30%.
Our proactive efforts were appreciated by the State Government as well as the public and we, in turn, were
gratified that we accomplished our mission to help lakhs of people get back on their feet and pick up their
lives again.
Our campaign brought pressure on the Government to take corrective action to provide safe drinking
water. Since 2007, a new water source was established and Krishna river water from Nagarjunasagar
Dam was diverted to provide drinking water to Nalgonda with permissible limits of fluoride. However, not
all the 600 fluoride-affected villages got water from the new source and 150 villages are still not covered.
More efforts are needed to ensure that flourosis is eradicated forever.

A PATH-BREAKING CRUSADE AGAINST FACTIONALISM
Factionalism has been an integral part of life in the Rayalaseema region of Andhra P radesh since decades.
Many landlords and politicians, their kith and kin practice it. For petty reasons, families have been
attacking each other over the years. The quest for revenge against an attack acted as the life-blood for the
continuation of factionalism. Many families have lost their dear ones. Some have sold away their lands
and left the region, while many others have been living in constant fear of being attacked. Development
of the region had practically come to a halt because of the rampant lawlessness, which also included
attacks on government functionaries and properties and at times, even on the families of government
officials.
When elections to the State Assembly were announced in the year 2009, many political parties supported
factionists as their candidates. TV9 decided that the time was right to start a campaign against
Factionalism. We carried promos and stories against this vicious practice and exhorted people not to vote
in a factionist to the Assembly. People realized that factionalism had hindered their region's progress. Our
channel's campaign succeeded as factionist leaders were ousted in the elections.

BHOOMI KOSAM
The initiatives taken by the A.P. State Government in 2007 with reference to irrigation schemes led to
widespread protests by farmers as their land was forcibly taken away from them. A meager compensation
was paid to them in exchange for their lands.
Tv9 organized a public seminar–“Bhoomi Kosam” to highlight the grave injustice done to farmers. This
initiative identified ways to pressurise the Government to resolve the compensation issue. Serious concerns
were expressed at the inordinate delays in payment of compensation, which is a violation of Article 21
(right to life) of our Constitution. It was pointed out that Government authorities were bound to pay not
only adequate compensation but also to rehabilitate the displaced owners from whom lands were
acquired.
TV9's remarkable initiative coupled with the support of the intelligentsia and public highlighted the fact
that compensation delayed was livelihood deprived. Panelists also pointed that the non-fulfillment of a
welfare State's obligations would tantamount to forcing the uprooted persons to become vagabonds or
indulge in anti-national activities. The Government was urged to pay compensation at the current market
values to the displaced farmers.

NIGHA - UNVEILING THE TRUTH BEHIND SHADY DEALS
Tv9 has always been the People's Channel. We have always been taking up issues that impact our society.
As a natural corollary to that, Nigha, our flagship investigative program, was started. It was the firstof-its-kind in Andhra Pradesh where an electronic media company exposed corruption in the highest
corridors of power. Questionable and shady deals of government officials, illegal operations of mining
mafia and liquor syndicates were investigated. Sensational and serious frauds were exposed through our
sting operations. We never let any fraud get past us without investigating it and presenting the actual facts
to our loyal viewers much to the discomfiture of the perpetrators of such illegal deals and operations.
We channeled our efforts into hard-hitting investigative reporting and pushed the boundaries further than
any of the other electronic media channels. We exhibited exemplary courage under fire. Most importantly,
we brought back into sharp focus, the two crucial pillars of a free press that is public interest and the
appetite as well as the courage to question the Government.
Tv9 came to be known as the channel that demanded accountability and transparency from
the Government. We succeeded in instilling fear in minds of government officials and businessmen alike.
Over the years, TV9's Nigha, has been breaking some of the most seminal stories in Andhra Pradesh.

EDUCATION WITHOUT INFRASTRUCTURE
Andhra Pradesh, at an estimated 50 per cent, has the distinction of having one of the highest primary
school dropout rates in the country. And what's more, female dropout rates at the primary and secondary
levels are among the highest in the country, at a staggering 42 and 79 per cent respectively. The female
literacy rate, at 33 per cent, is one of India's lowest, according to a World Bank report. These
issues, however, do not seem to be important to a Government that continues to exhibit utter apathy.
The majority of the government schools across Andhra Pradesh have been lacking in basic facilities like
proper buildings, black boards, benches and tables and books. Most of them have been functioning
without electricity, drinking water or drainage facilities.
TV9's seminar on the Right to Literacy in 2006 demanded better conditions in schools. We have been
continuing our campaign over the intervening years, goading the Government to take up measures to
improve facilities. Till date, our reporters have been highlighting the pathetic conditions in
Government-run schools.

NAVEENA – A UNIQUE WOMAN'S SHOW
Naveena, started as a women's show in 2006. It emphasized the importance of career over make-up,
news over fashion and inspirational stories over sensational coverage. Gradually, Naveena evolved into a
daily program in the afternoon band focusing on empowering women with information about their rights
and questioning the discrimination against women.
Fed-up with the proliferation of inane beauty contests, Naveena introduced its own - Naveena Mahila
Contest – to honour and award women from the grass-roots level who had shown extraordinary courage.
It was an effort to showcase the struggles of these women and also to share their inspiring stories with the
public. Awards were instituted for three categories: (i) fighting for one's rights (ii) fighting against a social
evil and (iii) showing courage in any situation in their life. Beginning with 2006, the contest has been
honoring women every year on March 8th on the occasion of International Women's Day. The programme
has won many prestigious awards including Ramnath Goenka, for its coverage on the unethical,
unjustified and increasing hysterectomies on young innocent women..

DIFFERENTLY ABLED ANCHORS
Tv9 has introduced differently -abled anchors for the first time in the history of private media channels in
India. Sujata Burla and Swati are bold, confident , spirited anchors of shows inspite of disabilities.
Sujata Burla was just 21 when she met with an accident that turned her into a paraplegic. The lower part
of Sujatha's body was completely paralysed and she had to move around in a wheelchair. Sujata was
recognized by TV9 for her determination to succeed against the odds. She was awarded the Naveena
Mahila Award in the category “Differently Abled” in 2007. TV9 CEO, Mr. Ravi Prakash spotted the zeal and
confidence in Sujata. TV9 took Sujata under its wings and groomed her as an anchor. She went on to host
the famous celebrity show "Close Encounter with Suzy” that became an instant hit with fans. Today, Sujata
continues to host the program “Varadhi” on TV9.
Swathi is independent by nature , a rare quality seen in a person with a handicap. she prefers to stay away
from family and pursues her studies determinedly. She entertains viewers with film gossip and updates
latest trends in cinema in “Weekend Cinema”. Lack of vision does not deter this gutsy, confident girl from
memorising her lines and showing her best self in front of camera.

CHETANA – CHAMPIONING CIVIC CAUSES FOR THE POOR
Chetana program on TV9 has been focussing on civic problems faced by poor living in the city's slums.
The program was started with the aim of highlighting how slum-dwellers are forced to live in big cities
without the basic amenities and has been creating awareness among them about their rights to food,
shelter and sanitation. It points out the neglect of the Government to provide the basic needs for the
down-trodden. Everyday thousands of workers migrate to cities from rural areas, with no guarantee to a
decent livelihood.
Tv9 helped set-up committees and members have been working with people to fight for a solution to their
problems. We carried the story of a 14-year-old slum in Hyderabad city that has around 6,000 people
living with no access to basic amenities.A family of four are forced to adjust with a pot of water from a
single hand-pump existing for the entire slum. Sewage flowed freely in front of their houses, pigs and
mosquitoes thrive in the surrounding filth, spread diseases with children falling prey to brain fever. TV9 has
been highlighting these issues.

TRAFFICKING – A SOCIAL PLAGUE
Andhra Pradesh has the highest rate of women and child trafficking in India with nearly 20,000 women &
children trafficked every year. At least 22 women and girls go missing every day in the State hinting at the
existence of a large-scale human trafficking network. In what is a matter of great concern, the total
number of women and girls that have gone missing in the State from 2009 to 2012 stands at a staggering
23,760 and they are yet to be traced.
Tv9 has been partnering with Prajwala in raising awareness against trafficking. Prajwala is a Hyderabadbased non-governmental organization that works towards the prevention, rescue, rehabilitation, and
social integration of victims. Promos and stories on this inhuman practice are constantly being aired on
our Channel.
The numbers of trafficking cases that see the light of the day are only the tip of the iceberg. The dangerous
disregard for women and child is manifested in the oppressive persistence of child trafficking, child
marriage and pregnancy, child labour, lack of access to education, domestic violence and multiple forms
of abuse. So far, only 3,000 victims have been rescued since 2003, and that, with the help of NGOs.

WOMEN POWER TO THE FOREFRONT
Tv9 has been encouraging social and economic upliftment of women through entrepreneurship. We
partnered with Confederation of Women Entrepreneurs (COWE), an NGO that has been working
un-relentlessly towards providing opportunities for women in industry, trade, retail, franchising and service
sectors.. Aimed at new women entrepreneurs, the COWE programme is designed to bring about
improved business education for women and trains them to negotiate policy, regulatory and financial
issues. Knowledge and training for entrepreneurs is offered by COWE.
Deep passion to create something new, a strong conviction that it will work, combined with a 'never give
up' attitude is the winning formula that is being adopted by many a woman.
Tv9 believes that women can be as good an entrepreneur as any and strives to promote women to actively
participate in every sphere of business. We have been promoting COWE's “Trade Carnival,” an annual
event that encourages women to become financially independent by starting their own businesses.

PROMOTING A GREEN HOLI
With the festival of Holi being celebrated every year in the month of spring in India, it's time to smear each
other with vibrant coloured powders and get smeared in turn too. Celebration of Holi is meaningless
without colours, but if the synthetic colours people buy contain harmful chemical compounds such as
oxides, metal, glass particles and substances used as a base in textile dyes, they could prove extremely
dangerous.
Many are not aware of the harm chemical colours can cause. They have solvents such as tetrathyline, lead,
benzene and aromatic compounds that can lead to dry skin or even to skin cancer. Typically, the week that
follows Holi, one sees a spurt in certain medical conditions – rashes and allergies, mostly in children and
young adults – by almost 40 percent.
Tv9 envisioned the usage of eco-friendly natural colors made from plant and flower extracts. We
partnered with Hyderabad Goes Green and has been taking up the “Green & Clean Holi” campaign. The
initiative was an effort to educate people on the harmful effects of synthetic colours and educate them to
use natural colours made from dry flowers and fruits.

THE FIGHT CANCER CAMPAIGN
Tv9 has been doing yeoman service to dispel the fears and misconceptions of cancer. TV9 worked with
Jagruti Cancer Awareness Foundation, to spread awareness on cancer and its cure. Jagruti Cancer
Awareness Foundation is a Hyderabad-based group of trained volunteers who deliver cancer awareness
talks. Vigorous campaigning was taken up by the channel and free screening camps for women were
conducted at various locations.
Breast cancer is the most common of all cancers and is the leading cause of deaths in women worldwide,
accounting for 1.6% of deaths. A recent study of breast cancer risk in India revealed that 1 in every 28
women develops breast cancer during her lifetime. The incidence is higher in urban areas, 1 in 22 in a
lifetime, compared to rural areas where this risk is relatively much lower, being 1 in 60 women. In India,
the average age of the high risk group is 43-46 years unlike in the West where women aged 53-57 years
are more prone to breast cancer.
Tv9 in collaboration with the Hyderabad-based KIMS Usha Laxmi Centre for Breast Diseases has been
working hard to raise awareness on breast cancer. For the past four years, our Channel has been carrying
promos and free scrolls and covered all the events as well.

EARTH HOUR
TV 9 supported the "Earth Hour" Campaign, in partnership with WWF-India, the world's largest voluntary
effort in energy conservation and environment protection. It is that one crucial hour that is uniting the
world and building synergies through the collective action of switching off non-essential lights in
celebration of life and our planet. It reaches out to all levels of socio-economic strata - big cities, small
towns, and villages.
WWF's annual global campaign “Earth Hour” inspired TV9 to take a stand against climate change. The
first year, TV9 organised a special live event from an up-market venue two hours prior to the scheduled
time. We appealed to Hyderabadis to join hands with the global Earth Hour campaign by switching off all
lights from 8.30 pm to 9.30 pm. Our principal objective was to encourage all citizens to become willing
participants in the "Earth Hour" programme and show their solidarity to environment protection and
preservation. Lakhs of supporters joined us to mark the start of Earth Hour across India by switching off
lights.
Earth Hour remains a unique opportunity for us at TV9 to do something positive for the environment. It is
not just about saving energy for that one hour, but it symbolizes the first step in the direction of adopting
environment-friendly activities in everyday life, which will lead the way towards a cleaner environment and
a sustainable lifestyle.

ECO-FRIENDLY GANESH
Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated by Hindus around the world as the birthday of Lord Ganesha. It is observed during the Hindu month of Bhadra (mid-August to mid-September). A clay idol of Lord Ganesha is
venerated at homes, temples or specially-erected “pandals” (outdoor tents) during this festival. For 10
days, Lord Ganesha is worshipped and on the 11th day, the idol is taken through the streets in a procession accompanied with dancing and singing, to be immersed in a water body symbolizing a ritual send-off
to the Lord.
A clay model of Lord Ganesha is usually made with plaster-of-paris painted with paints that contain toxic
chemicals. On the day of the festival, it is placed on raised platforms in homes or in elaborately decorated
outdoor tents for people to view and pay their homage. The sizes of the idols vary from 3/4th of an inch
to over 25 feet in height. However, it had been observed that idols do not dissolve in water and tonnes of
idols float in water bodies for days after the festival was over, causing serious water pollution. The paints
did not dissolve in the water and added to the pollution of the water bodies.
To prevent continual pollution of water bodies, TV9 has been promoting the usage of an eco-friendly
Ganesh idol. To drive home the point, TV9 has been erecting a gigantic Ganesh idol every year, made
purely out of mud and dry grass. To debunk popular belief that mud idols cannot be built 40 feet high, we
took special care to install one of that height. After 10 days of worship, the idol is immersed in a nearby
pond. The ritual was telecast live to educate viewers on how an eco-friendly idol quickly dissolved in the
water, whereas a synthetic one not only took years to dissolve but also severely polluted the fresh water
ponds while doing so.

FOR THE UNALLOYED JOY OF GIVING
Tv9 believes that Media should be a harbinger of social change and has been striving to do its best towards this. In line with that belief, it has been promoting the “Joy of Giving Week” (JGW), every year from
Oct 2- 8. It gives many an opportunity to reach out to the less-privileged by donating money, volunteering
time and offering their services. We promoted the concept by widely-publicising it through scrolls, promos
and coverage of relevant stories.
We have been prodding people to explain about the activities and the areas that they could help in, in
terms of cash, kind or guide others as volunteers. The response has been excellent in terms of contributions made by the public. Students have been giving away all the used things that could be spared including shoes, books, bags and toys, among others. Many such instances show a promise of continued efforts
to carry forward the 'giving' spirit.
This week-long festival of 'giving', ends with smiles and laughter for the “giver” and the “given.” TV9 is
proud of the fact that even when the “Joy of Giving Week” (JGW) comes to an end, the hope and contentment the event kindles does not come to an end.
