POW/MIA Recognition Day—3rd Friday in September
POW/MIA Recognition Day—3rd Friday in September
that format was continued until
1982, when a black and white
drawing of a POW in harsh captivity was used to convey the
urgency of situation and the priority that President Ronald Reagan
assigned to achieving the fullest
possible accounting for Americans still missing from the Vietnam War.
National POW/MIA Recognition
Until July 18, 1979, no comDay legislation was introduced
memoration was held to honor yearly, until 1995 when it was
America's POW/MIAs. That

be considered by Congress. The

Man formation was flown by
the date was routinely set in
the 1st Tactical Squadron,
close proximity to the League's
Langley AFB, Virginia.The
annual meetings. In the midVeterans Administration pub- 1980's, the American Ex-POWs
lished a poster including only decided that they wished to see
the letters "POW/MIA" and
the date established as April
9th, the date during World War
II when the largest number of
Americans were captured. As a
result, legislation urged by the
American Ex-POWs was
passed covering two years, July
20, 1984 and April 9, 1985, as
the commemoration dates.
The 1984 National POW/MIA
Recognition Day ceremony was
held at the White House, hosted
by President Ronald Reagan. At
that most impressive ceremony,
the Reagan Administration balanced the focus to honor all
returned POWs and renew national commitment to accounting
as fully as possible for those still
missing. Perhaps the most impressive Missing Man formation
ever flown was that year, up the
Ellipse and over the White
House. Unfortunately, the 1985
ceremony was canceled due to
inclement weather, a concern
that had been expressed when
the April 9th date was proposed.
Subsequently, in an effort to
accommodate all returned POWs
and all Americans still missing
and unaccounted for from all
wars, the National League of
Families proposed the third Friday in September, a date not
associated with any particular
war and not in conjunction with
any organization's national convention.
National POW/MIA Recognition
Day Ceremonies are now held
throughout the nation and around
the world on military installations,
ships at sea, state capitols, at
schools, churches, national veteran and civic organizations, police
and fire departments, fire stations, etc.

COMMANDER’S MESSAGE
This time of
year is filled
with graduations from every
level of education from preschool to medical school. Perhaps the most
notable graduation is our graduation from high school and 58 years
later my third term as commander
of Post 372. I thank everyone for
the opportunity to run the Post for
the year 2014/2015.
I am looking forward to working
with my executive board and the
new officers of the Auxiliary, our
Sals and Riders.
We moaned and groaned and
shoveled all winter long over the
many snow storms and very cold
days this past season. Thank you
for all the many jobs that took
place in the post at that time. Did
you take notice that the front wall
has been repaired and our new TV
in the bar? The new flags have
been hung in the hall thanks to our
members who have worked so
hard to keep things up and running. A new officer’s board will be
hung in the bar. Our pull tab ma-
chines are up and running full
speed (keep on playing).
Boy’s and Girl’s State, flagging of
graves, Memorial Day Services,
Statewide Services, and a Deployment Escort/Party were only some
of the activities the legion took part
in over the past couple of months.
Thank you goes out to all Post
members for taking part in these
activities and paying tribute to our
vets.
Two of our Sals deserve a big hand
- John Giacoboni and Jerry Salvucci did the cooking on Memorial
day at Cherry Hill Township .
On June 21st the annual Cherry Hill
High Veterans car show took place.
Proceeds benefit Samaritan Veterans Hospice and is run by one of
our Sal members—John Giacoboni.
A big thank you to him.
Check our web site for information
on hall rentals and activities. Sue
Quinn-Morris has all the information.
Spring is the time to pay your
membership dues so be an early
bird and take care of your duty.

5th Annual Jeremy Kane 5K Run/Walk
The fifth annual Jeremy Kane 5K
Memorial Run was held on Sunday, June 8th in honor of Cherry
Hill resident who was killed by a
suicide bomb attack while on patrol in Afghanistan in 2010.
Kane was 22, a criminal justice
major at Rutgers-Camden and a
lance corporal in the U.S. Marine
Corps when he was killed.
“Being a fellow veteran and
working closely with the student
veterans at Rutgers–Camden, my
thoughts are always with the Kane
family and any student veteran
who has been touched by this
tragic war,” says Fred Davis, head
of the Office of Veterans Affairs at
Rutgers–Camden, a co-sponsor
of the event. Proceeds go toward
the Jeremy Kane Scholarship
Fund, which supports student .
The event is also co-sponsored
by the student veterans at Rutgers–Camden and receives support from other organizations in-
cluding Warrior's Watch Riders
and American Legion Post 372 in
Cherry Hill.
Every year some of the members of the American Legion, including Russ Smiths girls come
out and flag the entire 5K run,
which helps the runners follow
the route throughout the neighborhood.
Some Legion Riders also came
out to join the Warriors Watch
with the motorcycle escort.

Legion Member Being Deployed
The second-largest contingent of
New Jersey National Guard soldiers
to be deployed overseas since
World War II left for Texas in June,
on the way to Qatar.
The soldiers are going to provide
command and control for U.S. units
already in place in the Persian Gulf
state to support Operation Enduring
Freedom. The most well-known
campaign in that operation is in Afghanistan, but the counterterrorism
mission has been active in Africa
and the Philippines, among other
locations.
In all, 16,000 soldiers have been
mustered from the Garden State
ranks since 2001 as part of operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring
Freedom, Guard officials said. Many
of the 450 soldiers who left for Qatar
on Wednesday were deployed to
Iraq in 2008 when 2,900 New Jerseyans — the largest combat deployment of the New Jersey National Guard since World War II — were
sent to that gulf state.
The deployment comes at a time
when the militant group the Islamic
State in Iraq and Syria, or ISIS, has
launched a lightning-fast offensive
that seized several northern Iraqi
cities, including Mosul, where U.S.
forces met tough resistance in trying
to seize the city in 2004. American
trained and equipped Iraqi security
forces have crumbled in the face of
the offensive, leaving behind their
weapons, vehicles and uniforms.
The deployment of New Jerseyans
now is coincidental. The 1/114th
has been training for the mission in
Qatar for about a year. But they are
going at a time when President
Obama has bolstered the U.S.
presence in the Middle East by reinforcing the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad with 275 soldiers and Marines,
and sending the USS George H.W.
Bush to the Persian Gulf along with
a guided-missile cruiser and a guided-missile destroyer. The bulk of
American combat forces left Iraq in
2011.
Among the 450 soldiers from four
companies of the 1st Battalion of
the 114th Infantry Regiment, is
Spec Chris Carr Jr. He joined the
Natl Guard Armory in 2010. He is
Team Leader of the 1/114th Alpha
Comp of Mt
Holly.
Chris, along
with his parents, Jamie and
Don Norris, are
members of the
Cherry Hill
American Legion Post 372.
His parents held a Deployment
Party for him at the Legion in
May. Our Legion members, along
with others from various groups
(Nam Knights, Warriors Watch,
Combat Vets, etc) joined in to
give Chris a surprise escort to his
party.
After the escort, Chris was
coined by the Legion Riders,
Nam Knights, Warriors Watch
and Combat Vets.
It was a festive party, a good
time was had by all. We wish
Chris good luck and expect to
hear from him when he gets in
Qatar.
We will be sending his unit care
packages—stay tuned for upcoming care package collections.

MESSAGE FROM THE SAL COMMANDER
I would like to start
off by thanking
everyone for a
great two years as
your SAL commander. I could not
have done it without the help of our guys that have
come together over the last couple years to get things done. We
have held several log splittings,
two terrific family days, and even
entered a float in the wildwood
parade to name a few. It was a
pleasure being your commander
but now it is time to pass the gavel to Rich Derer. Rich has been
on our board for several years
and has more than proven himself to take the reins and lead our
organization. I am quite confident
that Rich we be a great commander. That being said, your
new SAL officers are as follows:
Commander- Rich Derer
Sr. Vice—Dave D’Orazio
Vice Commander- Jerry Renteria
Adjutant- Mike Goffinet
Finance/Membership- Jim Arcinese
& Jim Ihlenfeld
Historian/Chaplain- Fran Keashen
Sergeant at Arms- Mike Lobascio
June 12th-14th was the American
Legion convention down in Wildwood. As always, post 372 had
great representation. The convention is held once a year and is a
meeting to gather all of the posts
from around the state. Even the
national commander comes out to
the event. Two days of meetings
are followed by the parade on Saturday which is always exciting to
see. If you couldn’t make it out this
year, we would love to see you
come out next year and represent
the post.
Unfortunately, there will be no fireworks for Cherry Hill this year. Fortunately, the annual 4th of July parade will be held once again in Earlton on July 3rd. The American Legion color guard always comes out
to lead off the parade in stellar
fashion. If you are interested in participating in the parade please contact Fran Keashen for further information. It’s always good to see the
post well represented in the parade.
Family day is just around the corner now. Our notorious annual family picnic will be held on Saturday
September 13th. As always, we will
have an abundance of food, raffle
prizes, music, games, and much
more. Tickets are now available in
advance and can be purchased in
the canteen at any time. Raffle tickets will also be available. Hope to
see all of you there!
Our meetings are held the 3rd
Wednesday of every month. Please
make it a point to come out and get
involved. The SAL’s need your continued support beyond the canteen
are dedicated to improving our community and organization

Children support our Medal of Honor Heroes
In April, the American Legion
sponsored a bus trip to the Irish
Pub in Philadelphia for the
“Gathering of Heroes”, where
three Medal of Honor recipients
were in attendance to meet and
greet all.
Medal of Honor recipients Brian
Thacker, Barney Barnum and
Michael Thornton, along with
several other high ranking military officials were present.
Legion members and friends
shuttled over to the event on a
bus. Attendance continues to
grow each year. This year we
even had a couple come
down from Canada to join us
on the bus trip. It was a night
to remember, a good time had
by all !
The “Gathering of Heroes” is
an annual event held by
MCLEF (Marine Corp Law Enforcement Foundation) in conjunction with the Irish Pub.
An especially heartwarming
touch this year was the cards
that the children from the
Resurrection Catholic School
in Cherry Hill made up. After
learning and listening to the
Medal of Honor recipients
stories, the children made up
cards for them. Their cards
were incredibly touching!
The cards were hand delivered to the Medal of Honor
recipients by Ron Colucci
and John Murphy at the Irish
Pub.
In Memory….
Over the last year we have lost many near and dear friends...may the memories we hold
keep them close at heart…..here are photos of some of them.

Memorial Day Services 2014
Legion Members participated in several Memorial Day Services.
The day began with services at the
American Legion where our deceased
Legion members names are read during the service.
Afterwards, there were services at
Locustwood Cemetery, Battaan Memorial at Cooper River Park, and then at
Cherry Hill Township Building.
After the services at the Township,
SAL Members Jerry Salvucci and John
Giacoboni, along with their crew,
cooked up a storm for all to enjoy.

September 18th—Air Force Birthday!
The official date of the founding
of the US Air Force is 18 September 1947. It was a momentous event that over six decades
later has demonstrated the
achievement of an Air Force
second-to-none, yet the Air
Force's history and heritage
goes back a lot further.
From the time that the US military purchased its first aircraft in

1909 up to 1947, the US Air
Force did not exist as a separate
and independent military service
organization. It went through a
series of designations: Aeronautical Section, Signal Corps (1909);
Aviation Section, Signal Corps
(1914); United States Army Air
Service (1918); United States Army Air Corps (1926), United
States Army Air Forces (1941).

MESSAGE FROM LADIES PRESIDENT
Wow I can’t
believe I made
it. This year has
had more ups
and downs than
a roller coaster
for me. The
Auxiliary has a lot to be proud of
this year and I want to Thank everyone who has helped us along
the way but especially those who
stepped up to make our special
projects happen.
We have been able to help our
homeless Veterans in both the
Home for the Brave in Camden
and Veterans Haven in Winslow.
We have provided Christmas presents, goodies, clothing, puzzles,
personal care products, books and
of course time during our many
visits. If you ever get a chance to
visit these facilities you would understand how much a visit means
to the residents. Knowing the
American Legion Family supports
them gives an added boost to their
efforts to get back on their feet.
These programs have been my
pet passion as the Veterans are
from every conflict, WWII to today,
it’s a great feeling knowing we
make a difference in their recovery. I am also very proud of our
Auxiliary as we were able to sponsor a room at the new Veterans
Haven in North Jersey which was
the Legion Family project for this
year.
This year the Auxiliary was able to
help our Post Home by providing
funds and person power towards
the many renovations which has
taken place. Stop by the post and
check out the newly painted hall,
flowers in the front and changing
decorations in the canteen. It
looks so much better, bright and
cheery.
I am also very proud of our Unit
as we met our goal in membership for the first time in many
years. There are still a few stragglers who haven’t paid their dues,
there is still time to renew and
keep your continuous years status. Check your card, make sure
you are carrying a 2014 card.
Don’t lose your privileges to enter
any post in the country as a proud
member of the American Legion
Family.
We have worked hand in hand
with our Legionnaires, SALs and
Legion Riders over the years and
we now welcome the Del Val Nam
Knights as we have become their
home base. The Knights and the
Lady Knights are a great addition to
our post as they stand for many of the
same goals as our Legion Family, the
Veterans and community. Not to mention they are a great group of people.
It’s a win –win to have them a part of
our post and many have joined as
members of the Legion Family. The
Auxiliary is looking forward to their
presence in the coming year.
In closing I want to thank everyone
who has supported me in my years as
the Unit President and I happily step
aside. Sandy will fill the position with
the same kind of passion I have. We
have a great group of incoming officers so I am sure the Auxiliary will continue to grow. Thank you to all the officers in the past who have filled the
offices proudly during my tenure.
June, Doris and Annette have
stepped down, as Mary, Michelle and
Sue have stepped up to join our other
officers. I appreciate all our members
and the support I have received over
the last 7 years. I wish the incoming
Legionnaire and SAL officers all the
best and promise the Auxiliary will
continue to work for the Legion Family
in the coming year. We have a Post to
be very proud of.
