It is also known as the Truffle City owing to the National White Truffle Fair held in November. Volterra4, a jewel of Etruscan, Roman and Mediaeval art, is situated to the south of the province. From the 550-metre-high hill where it stands, it looks as if it were moving to meet tourists with its spellbinding view of mediaeval walls, the Cathedral and the Piazza dei Priori, besides the more ancient treasures of the Porta Etrusca and of the Roman Theatre. Major roads Trunk roads Pisa offers the visitor the wonderful Piazza dei Miracoli (Miracles Square), a UNESCO heritage site, with the Duomo (cathedral) and its belfry, the famous Leaning Tower, the Monumental Cemetery and the 14thcentury Baptistery. Some distance away lie Pisa’s medieval alleys, the scenic Piazza dei Cavalieri (Knights Square) and the Lungarni, the roads along the banks of the river Arno, overlooked by aristocratic Renaissance palaces, all locked together, and churches of ancient beauty. When visiting the environs of Pisa, one is immersed in a landscape of olden times where harmony and peacefulness reign supreme. Among the main villages of Pisa province, one is struck by Vicopisano5, with its many towers built between the 11th and 15th centuries and affording a wonderful view of the surrounding country. The countryside is crossed by an Olive Oil Route linking it with nearby Calci6, with its beautiful Charterhouse, and with Cascina7 and the old hamlet of Buti8. Lari9, the Cherry City and Touring Club Orange Flag, still keeps intact a medieval urban structure by preserving its picturesque dwelling houses, narrow alleys and the imposing mass of Vicars’ Castle. Not far away stands Peccioli10, another Orange Flag town which quite originally matches ancient and modern styles, along with rural villages deserving attention mainly due to their landscape. These include Lajatico11, Terricciola12, Chianni13, Palaia14, Capannoli15 and Ponsacco16, where the atmosphere and rhythms of yore still breathe to the present day. Lovers of industrial archeology and contemporary art will choose Pontedera, the seat of the Piaggio Museum, as their reference centre. Going down towards the coast we come across the villages of Castellina Marittima18, Riparbella19, Montescudaio21, Casale Guardistallo20, 22 Marittimo and Monteverdi Marittimo23, endowed with distinguishing characteristics, yet sharing the countryside’s beauty and peacefulness. These villages have succeeded in promoting a form of advanced and responsible tourism while offering quality reception. PisaUnicaTerra is... Nature The landscapes and ecosystems of the Pisa territory are renowned for their variety. They range from the green of the Monti Pisani to the sands and loams of the Colline Metallifere, from the white badlands of Volterrano to the red clay areas and sandy surfaces of the Colline Pisane. Still more, the coastal strip bordered with dunes and pine forests and the spectacular show of the borax fumaroles of Larderello1. The beauty of the mountains and of the hills of Pisa is nature’s gift enriched by the peasant’s hand. Man’s intervention has chiselled during the ages a landscape which now consists of farm enterprises, holiday farmhouses, country houses and old mills, rows of vines, terrace plots of olive trees and cultivated stretches providing quality produce. The Park of Migliarino San Rossore Massaciuccoli is a vast, unspoilt nature reserve located only a few kilometres from Pisa. Within it is located one of the most lonely beaches of the Tuscan coastland and right next to it there stand green pine trees, perfumed stretches of Mediterranean scrub and strips of wood replete with fauna. In the upper Val di Cecina we meet with the natural erosive events caused by the calanques and “biancane”, favoured by clay lands which near Volterra2 produce the famous “balze” (cliffs). Then, in the farthest reaches of Pisa territory, stand the Colline Metallifere, where a visit to the borax fumaroles and to the old Etruscan and mediaeval mines is a must. The Migliarino San Rossore Massaciuccoli Park3 stretches between Pisa, Vecchiano4 and Lucca along the coastal strip of the provinces of Pisa and Lucca. The area was once occupied by a lake and a marsh which in time PisaUnicaTerra is... Spa and Wellness were filled by the Serchio, the Arno and the hand of man. Geographic location, the variety of natural environments and the presence of water determine a great richness of animal and plant species. Among the estates within the park are San Rossore5, Tombolo6 and Coltano7. The protected areas , another element that makes Pisa a natural beauty, offer an opportunity to practise several sports, recreational and naturalistic activities like trekking and excursions by bicycle, boat or canoe. Orciano Pisano8 and the Lake Santa Luce Sanctuary9 are ideal for birdwatching and hunting photography. Experienced environmental guides are available to visitors. The Pisan countryside is there with its thousand colours, fragrances and food and wine products. It is a territory where farmsteads defend the quality of their products and territorial identity. The agricultural roots have been given the stamp of immortality in the paintings of the Macchiaioli, who lived in the wonderful 19th-century country houses of Lorenzana10, Fauglia11 and Crespina12. An underground province awaits discovery in nature’s sudden manifestations and in subterranean spaces recounting the history of man. A voyage in time and space to discover the traces of the old mines between Montecatini Val di Cecina13, Castelnuovo Val di Cecina14 and the Colline Metallifere, or of extraordinary places like the old copper mine of Camporciano. Natural phenomena are also well known to occur in the Val di Cecina, especially the characteristic puffs of white vapour from the fumaroles of Larderello. PisaUnicaTerra is... Food and Wine Locally produced wine elates food and every typical dish. Along the routes of the wine paths (Wine Route of the Pisa Hills and Wine Route of the Etruscan Coast) tourists can find both hospitality and reception, above all in the farm holiday centres, while also visiting wine cellars or vineyards. From beach to hills a rambler would hike along routes and tracks leading to the discovery of local wine and food “masterpieces”. These are all the fruit of a peasant culture with roots lying deep in Etruscan and Roman civilisation. Special flavours and aromas are also found in fruits, sweets, cheeses, sausages and meats, whose raw materials and manufacturing methods cater for the needs of whoever wants to recover the taste of genuineness within a historical and cultural context. Truffles, a product highly sought-after by gourmets, puts Pisa in the centre of an important production zone of several varieties, the most esteemed of which is the white truffle of the Sanminiatese hills. Between March and November, several trade fairs and dedicated festivals are held in towns where truffle is produced. At the many farm holiday centres, providing hospitality and immersed in greenery, one can taste local farm products, while enjoying the peace and tranquillity of the Pisa countryside. Extra virgin olive oil is not only exquisite but also capable of enhancing the taste of raw and cooked foods. Along the Olive Oil Route of the Monti Pisani tourists can visit the olive-presses and taste freshly produced oil. Beyond the Pisa Mountains, the most important production areas are the inner hills, the coastal hills and the Alta Val di Cecina. At the foot of the Pisan Mountains, the area encompassing the municipalities of San Giuliano Terme and Vicopisano presents a wide hydrothermal heritage within a territory rich in history and natural beauties. Nested in the Pisan Hills, Casciana Terme makes available a treatment and rehabilitation centre at the forefront of technology. The quality of the treatment, the beauty of the landscape and a unique combination of sounds, fragrances and colours allow visitors to the baths of Pisa to regain the psychophysical equilibrium required to face up to the daily challenges of modern life. The feeling of well-being derived from the thermal springs can be associated with many sports activities, including golf which can be played within enchanting natural sceneries. This constitutes, along with the springs, a perfect duo for those tourists who, while visiting cities and arts centres or enjoying a holiday by the sea or in the hills, like keeping fit by alternating sports with baths and treatment in thermal buildings Casciana Terme11 is a small and warm-hearted town whose thermal waters were discovered, according to legend, by Countess Matilda of Tuscany. Inside the thermal building, with its 19th-century facade, the bicarbonate-sulphate-calcium waters have been used for centuries to fight osteoarthritis, rheumatisms and sciatica. San Giuliano Terme22 has springs whose waters were already well thought of by the Etruscans and Romani. A recent renovation has thrown back the thermal building to the glory of the 18th century, when it formed the summer residence of the House of Lorraine. The Springs are an ideal place not only for anyone looking for therapeutic effects, but also for anyone wanting to look after himself by making use of the wellness offers. Le Terme di Uliveto33 are remarkable owing to their precious health spas, having an unmistakable and rich savour of mineral salts. It is an ideal place where to reset one’s physiological equilibrium in a natural way, not only by drinking the precious water, but also by entrusting oneself into the hands of professionals who work out personalised wellness courses. Il Golf enriches the thermal offer. Set in a beautiful natural setting are three wonderful golf courses. Two stretch out on the Pisan coast, in Tirrenia4, the Cosmopolitan Golf & Country Club and the Golf Club Tirrenia, while along the road leading from Pisa to Florence and a short distance from San Miniato5 is the Fontevivo Golf Club. PisaUnicaTerra is... Seaside A province to taste joining the natural beauties and the landscape heritage of the art centres together with the pleasures of wining and dining. A large variety of products such as wines, oils and truffles, are all provided by nature’s bounty and the hard work, skill and innovative abilities of farmers. The typical cuisine of Pisa boasts several sea, land and freshwater recipes. All these dishes are the result of special cooking techniques and centuries of history. The thermal springs enriching the Pisa territory have given rise since ancient times to thermal baths which are frequented not only for therapeutic purposes but also in search of well being and peacefulness. Valuable vegetables and fruits produced in the territory of 1Pisa include the of artichokes of San Miniato , the cherries 2 3 Lari , the Colombana grapes of Peccioli and the melons and watermelons of 4 Bientina , the ‘Tosca’ potato of Santa 5 Maria a Monte . Worthy of mention are also pine nuts and honey, cheeses and cold cuts, and for the greediest the Cantucci Toscani, the Nozza, a 6 typical sweet of Calcinaia , and the 7 Ricciarelli of Pomarance . Excellent chocolate is produced in Pisa, 8 9 Pontedera and Montopoli . The Pisa coast, is a stretch of sandy beaches and reefs immersed in the scent of the lush Mediterranean scrub. Travelling from Pisa to Marina di Pisa, the mouth of the river, known as the “Bocca d’Arno”, is renowned for the fishing of eels and there one can enjoy a most beautiful landscape between the San Rossore Estate and the profile of the Apuan Alps. At Marina di Pisa there are small beaches surrounded by reefs and open spaces abutting onto the sea. Continuing on the way to Tirrenia, up to Calambrone, the beaches are wider, bordered by a broad Mediterranean pine forest and surrounded with dunes having great naturalistic importance. The sandy beaches, the crystal clear sea, the wide pine forests and the swimming, sports and leisure areas, offer a varied and peaceful stay. Nor is entertainment lacking: there are discos, seashore clubs open till dawn and so many parties thrown in lidos. To the north of the mouth of the Arno, the long sandy coast extends from the mouth of the Serchio up to Torre del Lago Puccini, with the Macchia di Migliarino scrubland right behind them. At Marina di Vecchiano the very fine shore and the Mediterranean shrubbery of the nearby scrubland, preceded by the soft amber dunes, create a charming landscape inland from the sea. Even here one can find reception houses which are in perfect synchrony with nature within a territory rich in wayside chapels, churches, fortresses and castles which render this territory unique all the year round. Marina di Pisa1 offers a peaceful and comfortable stay. Yet it is also rich in leisure activities and entertainment with discos and pubs strewn all along the beach. In the pine forest situated next to the inhabited areas it is possible to ramble on foot or on horseback. From the Bocca d’Arno2 one can reach by motor vessel Cinque Terre and the islands of Capraia and Elba. Tirrenia3, a few kilometres from Pisa, is a modern and elegant seaside resort, immersed in a broad Mediterranean pine forest. The coast has wide and well fitted sandy beaches accompanied by qualified resorts for the leisure and holidaying of adults and kids alike. There are several sport activities which can be practised on the beaches or in several sports complexes immersed in the pine forest green. Calambrone4, between Tirrenia and Livorno, is located where the Porto Pisano lay in mediaeval times. This was the great seaport of the Republic of Pisa. There are Art Nouveau and modernist buildings dating from the 1930s. Right next to Calambrone extends the pine forest of Tombolo, in San Rossore Natural Park, offering long and wide beaches of fine sand and dunes. The wind and wave exposure of this zone makes it a rallying point for sail and windsurf enthusiasts. Marina di Vecchiano5, which is embedded in the Natural Park of Migliarino San Rossore Massaciuccoli, has a long coastline. It runs for four kilometres of very fine golden beach moving out of sight to infinity. The beach is partly seen as a free shore and partly as a beach equipped with modern and receptive structures offering a peaceful and pleasant hospitality for anyone wishing to spend one’s own holidays immersed in nature.
