Call me a skeptic or a party pooper, every time I see an announcement for a panel
discussion about whether or not photography is dead, I cringe. My reaction isn’t
because we all know that photography is more alive now than ever, but there have
always been doomsayers shaking their finger at the sky.
The end of the world is when, again?
[ WELCOME ]
Welcome, from the Director
Truth is – no one knows where photography will be in 10 years (or dare say, 5 years).
No. One. Those experts on the panel? They don’t know either. My belief: some
things will change drastically - some things will barely change at all. The phrase
“new normal” is so 2009, but perhaps the uncertainty surrounding everything we’ve
taken for granted is the new normal.
Earlier this year, I came across this quote by artist and writer, Trevor Paglen:
“Without question, the 21st Century will be a photographic century. Photography
will play a more fundamental role in the functioning of 21st Century societies than
20th Century practitioners working with light-sensitive emulsions and photographic
papers could have ever dreamed. So while in one sense photography might be
“over,” in another, it’s barely gotten going. And we haven’t seen anything yet.”
Amy Miller
Executive Director, ACP
Mr. Paglen, you nailed it.
What I’m sure of is that every indicator points to photography being the world’s
fastest growing art form. An art form of limitless possibility, nearly infinite in value an art form worth celebrating.
Welcome to the 16th annual Atlanta Celebrates Photography Festival!

Image and Identity
THOMAS ALLEN HARRIS EXPLORES THE INTERPLAY OF RACIAL ATTITUDES AND PHOTOGRAPHY
A project nine years in the making, filmmaker Thomas
Allen Harris’s award-winning documentary Through a
Lens Darkly: Black Photographers and the Emergence
of a People explores the ways black identity has been
deformed and altered by the photographic record. The
film is a chronicle of the incredible influence images
have had in shaping perceptions about race.
At every critical juncture in the evolution of black
Americans—from slave to hip-hop artist, from sharecropper to president of the United States, from the
urban housing project to Palm Beach—black photographers have been there, showing the ordinary daily lives
of a people who have been integral to making America
what it is,” says Harris. The filmmaker culled 15,000
images from historical societies and archives and
another 6,000 family photos for the project, these were
then edited down to the 950 images that appear in the
final film. “The overwhelming majority of these images
[ THROUGH A LENS DARKLY ]
have never before been seen on film,”
he says.
Beginning with the earliest photographic documents, Harris’s illuminating documentary shows how
an idea of what black means has
been proposed—most often by white
photographers exercising their own
agendas and prejudices—in photographs. Lynching photographs traded
like souvenirs, images of minstrels,
racist advertising, and the damaging black caricatures in films like D.W.
Griffith’s The Birth of a Nation have all
colluded to diminish and deny black
achievement. Artists and historians,
including the filmmaker’s brother Lyle
Ashton Harris, Carrie Mae Weems,
t

Glenn Ligon, Coco Fusco, Deborah
Willis, Renee Cox, and Atlanta artist
Sheila Pree Bright, are interviewed to
offer their own commentary on how
their lives and art have been altered
by the depictions of black Americans
in film and photographs.
Along with artists challenging racist diminishment of black life, Harris
offers up the powerful corrective
of family photographs of AfricanAmerican life and the affirmative,
dignified self-portraits commissioned
by Sojourner Truth and Frederick
Douglass to counter vicious caricature. Operating at odds to hurtful,
damaging pop culture images, these
photographs showed black weddings,
graduations, and birthdays, loving
families and proud moments. In the
hands of influential black photographers like Gordon Parks, Roy DeCarava, and James Van Der Zee, AfricanAmericans could finally see the reality
behind the stereotypes.
Harris’s film is a Who’s Who survey
of some of the important contributions of black artists to not just art
history, but to a reassessment of the
black image in popular culture. The
film is also a haunting, illuminating
survey of American history seen in
hundreds of historical photographs
that tell a very different story about
the complex and often ugly truth
of American life as seen in photographs of black Americans. For information about this event, please see
page 33.
PHOTOGRAPHERS RICHARD SELESNICK AND
NICHOLAS KAHN REIMAGINE OUR WORLD.
Collaborative artists and photographers Richard Selesnick and Nicholas Kahn channel other eras and imagined
futurescapes in photographs that variously celebrate and
pillory exploration, questing, and misguided colonialism
with delerious imagination.
Informal collaborators since they were undergraduates
at Washington University in St. Louis, London-born Kahn
and New York City–born Selesnick have worked together
since 1988. Their photographs are elaborately designed
and staged fictions involving fantastic costumes, props,
and performances that have imagined cities built on icebergs off the German coast, space exploration set against
the lunar-reminiscent badlands of Death Valley, and a traveling cabaret troupe—the Truppe Fledermaus—performing against an apocalyptic landscape in a body of work

offering commentary on ecological
destruction. The scenarios can be
both whimsical and horrific, featuring
masked and cloaked figures operating in uncertain landscapes and in
vague time periods whose fuzzy
time and place can create a disorienting effect.
But despite their hyperbolic
nature, the works are often drawn
from truth as in Kahn and Selesn-
ick’s surreal study of space exploration Mars: Adrift on the Hourglass
Sea. Like all of their work, Mars was
inspired by actual images from Mars
recreated using the desolate terrestrial landscapes of Death Valley. In
more lyrical fashion, the artists’ photographs for City of Salt were inspired
by the writings of Italo Calvino.
“We do a great deal of research on
real world events and collect masses
of images and stories before we have
an inkling of what the main themes
and connective tissues are in our odd
form of narrative,” say the artists.
“We hope there is always the sense
that somewhere lurks a nasty pile
of truth swept up in the corner of
our project.”
The artists have treated ecological
disasters, economic collapse, climate
change, and colonialism among other
issues in their work. “But we usually
find it easier to explore and comment
on them through the lens of the past
or future,” they say.
Kahn and Selesnick’s fantastic
musings can inspire a host of associations, from Dutch Golden Age masterworks to the filmmaking dreamscapes of silent-era creatives like
George Melies. The artists cop to the
fact that their influences are copious
and endless: “There are just too many
influences rattling around our heads:
[ SELESNICK AND KAHN ]
art history, movies, sci-fi, failed expeditions, Dada, cartoons, archaeology,
post-modern literature, romanticism,
absurdism, lost islands, all kinds of
things. . . . We are definitely raiders of
the art history larder!”
Expanding the parameters of
photography, in all of their work the
artists create canny, knowing commentaries on the human tendency
to misremember. Their preposterous
photographic happenings, the artists
say, are a statement about not only
the way history is malleable and can
be shaped or manipulated to serve
national needs, but also a statement
on our very human tendency toward
false and faulty memory.
“We constantly reimagine our
memories as we remember them,
re-staging them in the theatre of
our minds until they they become a
simulacrum of the original event,” say
the artists. For information about this
event, please see page 31.

Good Fences Make Good Neighbors
ACP BRINGS THE INNOVATIVE FENCE PROJECT TO THE ATLANTA BELTLINE
t
12
Taking advantage of the powerful communicative tool of
the popular, pedestrian-centric Atlanta BeltLine, this year’s
Atlanta Celebrates Photography Public Art Program project spotlights an outdoor photo gallery: the FENCE.
Aimed at reaching audiences outside of traditional art
venues, ACP’s Public Art Program has featured photographs on placemats, on the sides of buildings, and in shop
windows. Its 2014 incarnation will showcase works on a
600-foot fence running alongside a section of the Atlanta
BeltLine, the public park and trail on reclaimed rail corridors that will one day circle the city of Atlanta.
The FENCE is a waterproof, mesh banner featuring color
and black-and-white images that originated in 2011 with
the Brooklyn-based art-presenting organization United
Photo Industries. UPI founders Sam Barzilay, Laura Roumanos, and Dave Shelley had a mission to present photography in a new context and to new audiences. “We are trying
to coax traditional photography out of the galleries and
into a public outdoor environment that offers accessibility
to all,” says Shelley.
After seeing earlier incarnations of the FENCE at venues
in Brooklyn and Boston, ACP thought Atlanta would make
an opportune additional city, and UPI embraced the idea.
“Its entrenched and active photography community is a
perfect location for an outdoor exhibit,” says Shelley.
This year’s FENCE project, which will also be exhibited in
New York’s Brooklyn Bridge Park and Boston’s Rose F. Kennedy’s Greenway, features an international roster of forty
photographers presenting work on five themes—Creatures,
Home, People, Play, and Streets—which are “specific categories that we as a society participate in daily,” according
to Shelley.
Participating artists, both amateur and professional, hail
from Mexico and Australia, Buenos Aires and Bangkok. The
project also showcases the work of two Southern-based
artists: Richmond, Virginia’s Tom Chambers and Haley
New Yorker photo editor Jessie Wender, and representatives from The New York Times, Getty Images, Esquire,
and Rolling Stone.
Juror Alexa Dilworth of Duke University’s Center for
Documentary Studies writes of the project on the FENCE
website, “The FENCE underscores the social aspect of
photography—that witnessing is a community exercise
rather than an individual one. Photographs are of and for
us.” For information about this event, please see page 22.

Morris-Cafiero of Cordova, Tennessee. The FENCE makes
their work accessible via this walkable scroll that turns
Atlanta’s BeltLine into an al fresco gallery. “In one sense
the FENCE is a world public art project created by an
open submissions format by photographers around the
globe,” says Shelley.

ACP PUBLIC ART: THE FENCE
Through November 1 @ Atlanta BeltLine’s Eastside Trail
This year, ACP is bringing The FENCE project to Atlanta in a first-time
partnership between ACP, United Photo Industries (of NY) and the
Atlanta BeltLine. The FENCE 2014 is an outdoor exhibition of images
juried from an international call for entries. This year The FENCE will
be simultaneously exhibited in three locations: Brooklyn Bridge Park
in New York, New York; Rose F. Kennedy Greenway in Boston, Massachusetts; and on the Atlanta BeltLine, where there’ll be a 600-footlong installation!
This acclaimed ACP program typically features temporary projects in
a variety of diverse locations throughout Atlanta. It is significant in its
ability to reach beyond the audience of traditional art venues and both
expand the way its audience considers and perceives photography and
“lens-based” media.

ACP PHOTOBOOK FAIR
August 30–31 @ Decatur Book Festival
ACP is one of the first organizations to hold a photobook fair featuring
self-published or indie-published photobooks. Now, for the second year
in a row, we are proud to be a part of the largest independent book festival in the country – the Decatur Book Festival!
Photography Books (and zines!) are more popular than ever - and the
fastest growing segment are those that are self published or indie-published. With an ever growing selection of ways to publish your own book,
photographers are now able to realize projects that are meant to be
seen in sequence, or that translate best in book form.
Come visit our booth and experience the Decatur Book Festival Labor
Day weekend at historic Decatur square. Enjoy book signings, author
readings, panel discussions, an interactive children’s area, live music,
parades, cooking demonstrations, poetry slams, writing workshops,
and more.

ACP’s collaborative program with inpatient teens at Scottish Rite
and Egleston hospitals has impacted participants beyond everyone’s
expectations. Volunteer photographers have been leading teens
through writing and self- portraiture at a critical time of their lives,
when they’re exploring their identity (whether it includes, or is in
reaction to their diagnosis).
Our kick-off event for #acpfest will be at Pace Academy. Come celebrate
with us as we feature an exhibition (and video) of the portraiture and
writing created by teens in this very special program.

ACP LECTURE SERIES: DAN WINTERS
October 10 @ Portfolio Center
Work by Dan Winters
LECTURE
Fri, Oct 10, 7–8:30pm
Dan Winters’ sparkling 35-year career in photography has led to iconic
photographs of some the world’s most prominent people. But to call him
a “celebrity photographer” wouldn’t just miss the mark, it would ignore
the breadth of his photographic projects and fascinations; from electron
microscopes to drawing and collage. Winters’ goal—to make the right
image, whether the subject is the space shuttle or Brad Pitt—has been
life-long, which speaks to the seduction (and elusiveness) of making the
perfect photograph.
Dan will discuss his work and the way his internal dialogue informs and
shapes the way he approaches his photography. Dan’s talk will stress
thought and perception, and will act as a compendium to his fifth and
most recent book, Road to Seeing, published in 2014 by New Riders.
Dan will take questions afterwards.

ACP LECTURE SERIES:
KAHN & SELESNICK
October 15 @ Savannah College of Art & Design
Work by Kahn & Selesnick
LECTURE
Wed, Oct 15, 7–8:30pm
Through photographs made at the crossroads of past & future, the collaborative artistic duo Nicholas Kahn & Richard Selesnick speculatively
explore time’s breadth; from a decidedly old-West-feeling future, to an
expertly imagined, science-fiction past.
Kahn & Selesnick create work that’s as boldly imaginative as it is
grounded by fact. As hand-crafted and anachronistic as a flying machine,
their work’s idiosyncrasies are built with painstaking purpose in support
of fantastic narratives, coaxing the viewer’s imagination to soar.
Critically acclaimed, with over 100 solo and group exhibitions worldwide,
their work appeals to wide swaths of culture. From steampunk circles to
historian cartographers, their pictures have an openness that beckons
and welcomes, inviting engagement from all.
Special thanks to SCAD Atlanta. Sponsored by Mailchimp.

ACP FILM SERIES PRESENTS:
THROUGH A LENS DARKLY
October 22 @ SCADshow
FILM SCREENING
Wed, Oct 22, 7–8:30pm
For the last ten years, the ACP Film Series has been exploring the close
connection between photography and film. In 2014 we are partnering with the BronzeLens Film Festival to screen the award winning film
Through a Lens Darkly: Black Photographers and the Emergence of a
People, the first documentary [and multimedia outreach project (see listing #90)] that explores how African American communities have used
the medium of photography to construct political, aesthetic, and cultural
representations of themselves and their world. Thomas Allen Harris’s
film is a chronicle of the incredible influence images have had in shaping
perceptions about race.
The BronzeLens Film Festival is dedicated to bringing national and
worldwide attention to Atlanta as a center for film and film production
for people of color. The organization showcases films and provides
networking opportunities that will develop the next generation of
filmmakers. bronzelensfilmfestival.com
Please see page 35 for information about a live, photo-sharing event
in conjunction with this screening.

ACP LECTURE SERIES PRESENTS:
GRACIELA ITURBIDE
October 23 @ Woodruff Arts Center
Featuring work by: Graciela Iturbide
LECTURE
Thu, Oct 23, 7–8:30pm
Widely celebrated as among the most significant contemporary photographers of Mexico, Graciela Iturbide has developed a rich body of work
over four decades, inspired largely by a fascination with everyday life in
her home country. Mentored for many years by Manuel Álvarez Bravo, her
work has consistently explored the urban/rural dichotomy, while examining the intersection of tradition and rituals with Mexico’s modernity.
Iturbide’s photographic career has relied on the strength of her personal
relationship to her subjects. A decade-long project yielded her quintessential photobook , Juchitán of Women (1989) which looked at the
legendary Zapotec city well-known for its matriarchal social structure.
She has won the W. Eugene Smith prize for photography in 1987 and a
Guggenheim Fellowship in 1988. In 2008 she received the Hasselblad
Foundation Photography Award. Her work has been exhibited internationally and is included in many major museum collections including
those of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the High Museum of Art, the
Museum of Modern Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the
J. Paul Getty Museum.

PANEL DISCUSSION
Fri, Oct. 24th, 7-8:30pm
An important goal for ACP is to help Atlanta retain the artistic talent that
the city fosters. ACP’s Spotlight Series seeks to give these photographers
and photo-industry stars greater exposure.
For the last year, The Bitter Southerner has been publishing “Great Stories
from the South” every Tuesday morning. Working with local photographers,
they present a slice of the South that’s as familiar as it is revelatory. As part
of ACP’s effort to highlight Atlanta-based photographers, An Evening With
The Bitter Southerner will weave together great people, fascinating stories,
and fine photography.
On October 24th, local photographers Aaron Coury, Amanda Greene,
and Zach Wolfe will talk about their photographs, there will be refreshing
beverages shared, and when it comes right down to it, we can’t wait for
you to join us all at Big Studio.

DONATE
We understand you!
Photography is how YOU communicate, capture memories, tell stories. Atlanta Celebrates
Photography is just what it sounds like. We
are an organization that celebrates the art of
photography through an annual month-long
festival each October featuring events held all
over Metro Atlanta and beyond (pssst. We do
year-round programming, too).
We are a tiny nonprofit with a hard working
staff. We are a nimble organization with no debt
and lots of ambition. We could not do what we
do without YOUR support. If you enjoy ANYTHING about our Festival, we ask you to please
show your support. A donation in any amount is
meaningful and important.
Donations may be made online at ACPinfo.org
or sent to the ACP office:

ACP is a nonprofit 501(c)3, and your donation
is tax deductible as allowed by law.
“ACP has matured
into one of the city’s
important arts organizations. (Grass)
rooted in the community, it has nurtured relationships
with local galleries,
museums, arts organizations, hospitals
and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.”
—Cathy Fox, ArtsATL.com
“ACP has helped to
build and expose an
even larger audience
for the medium in
our region. I think the
wonderful inclusiveness of ACP’s festival
has unlocked the
potential within photography to be both
accessible and profound, and to speak
to a wide range of
audiences.”
