Littlewick Show - Bad News & (at last) Good News The bad news is that for the second year running we had terrible Bank Holiday weather and the Show made a substantial loss. In 2015 we had to find a new site as we could not use the Braywick site again. The good news is that after a lot of uncertainty about the location for the Show we now know that, thanks to the kindness of local landowners, this year’s show will be held on Bottle Meadow, Knowl Hill. Many will remember this as being the site for the Knowl Hill Steam Rally. This will bring the Show much closer to it’s original location. We are looking for volunteers to help with car parking, collecting gate money and giving out programmes on the day. Could you be part of a highly motivated team that works hard, has lots of fun, feels good about helping St. Peter’s and St. Paul’s to fundraise and falls asleep at night thoroughly exhausted saying “Never again.” Will YOU be one of them this year? The Show will be held on the Bank Holiday Monday - 29th August. If you can help please contact Sandra on 01628 822402 or Jim on 01628 822394 as soon as possible. Even an hour of your time will be a great help and you will get free entry to the show. This is “an offer you can’t refuse.” Weddings & Baptisms If you are interested in getting married at St Mary’s Church or having your child baptised, please come along to one of our 10.30am Sunday morning services to see how we do things! After the service have a word with whoever is leading the day and we will take your details and arrange to visit you at home to talk about what we can offer. Message from Bob Austen... What We Did On Our Holidays This is our traditional September Magazine feature. If you would like to share your holiday experiences with our readership, please send your articles to the Editor, [email protected], preferably with a photo or two. The copy date is Friday 19th August. Happy Holidays everyone! 55 St Mary’s Nurture Groups - Come on in this September By Steve Turville You may be wondering “What is a Nurture Group?” Well it’s a group of people who meet regularly to study the Bible, pray together, and support each other. In some churches they are known as Life Groups, Cell Groups, House Groups or similar. We call ours Nurture Groups because not all meet in a house, and because ‘nurture’ (encouraging, growing, caring, training) is our main aim. We are extremely blessed at St Mary’s to have so many groups that meet throughout the village throughout the week. Attending church on Sunday is very important, but it rarely gives an opportunity to ask questions, to raise doubts, or share our problems. This is where Nurture Groups are invaluable, as we learn together and from each other. The groups vary in flavour but the aim is always to grow in our faith, and be encouraged as we live out that faith in our everyday lives. The groups fulfil a very important pastoral role too, as we are able to support each other through life’s ups and downs, both by prayer, practical support and friendship. If you would like to find out more, why not come along to a few groups in September and dip your toe in the water, to see just who is there and what goes on. If you want to just sit and observe that’s fine. Details of some of the groups that meet are shown on page 7. Please contact the people shown below for help and information, or speak to them in church. 66 Camilla 940 2202 Alan 940 1182 Linda 940 4231 Steve T 940 6720 Verna 940 2833 Steve C 07889 153086 Tuesday Ladies Bible Study, 9.30am at the Vicarage Coffee, Bible study, discussion, and prayer. George had been a fit and God-fearing man all his life. At 87 he decided to see his doctor for a medical examination. A few days later, the doctor met George walking down the street with an attractive young lady on his arm and he told him he looked great. “Doing just what you said doctor” said George, “Get a hot mamma and be cheerful.” The doctor replied, “George, I said you’d got a heart murmur and be careful.” 77 8 St Mary’s Church Annexe Progress with the 21C Fundraising Appeal from Bob Austen, Appeals Coordinator June has been a busy month for the Fundraising Team. We met in the Hannen Room on Friday 3rd June to stuff envelopes with Appeal letters which we have distributed to our past supporters and hopefully some new ones! As much as composing articles for the Parish Magazine and the Wargrave News is important, the personal touch undoubtedly carries more gravitas and a letter with the signature of John Cook we hope will have a significant impact. We do hope that recipients of the letter will help us to realise our target! At the time of writing the Annexe Appeal stands at £141K which means we have achieved 35% of the target of £400K. This is very encouraging but of course there is much to do and we welcome all donations to the Appeal, however big or small. Cheques made out to ‘Wargrave with Knowl Hill PCC’ can be sent to: The 21st Century Project Team, St Marys Parish Office, Mill Green, Station Road, Wargrave, RG10 8EU Alternatively you can donate via our mydonate page: https://mydonate.bt.com/charities/stmaryschurchwargrave-21stcenturyproject Or else just go to the mydonate page and search for "wargrave" Words of Wisdom The ability to speak several languages is an asset, but to be able to hold your tongue in one language is priceless. At the end of a rather difficult church meeting, the vicar was heard to say, “When all is said and done, it is a pity that more is usually said than done.” They say that God didn’t create anything without a purpose, but we think mosquitoes and wasps come mighty close. 99 The Queen’s90th Birthday Celebrations by Jane and Bob Austen The weather forecast all week gave very little cause for optimism. Lots of rain predicted and sure enough, on Sunday morning it lived down to expectations! A large turnout of volunteers assembled on the Green at 9.00am to lay out over 200 tables and 1250 chairs, and the job was completed in less than an hour in constant drizzle. Despite this, the organisers were full of beans and we set to putting up the stage and the refreshment tents. Bob relieved Christine on the gate at 11.00am so that she could attend the Church Service and was able to spread the message of ‘sunshine and blue sky just around the corner’; who would have thought just how accurate this was going to be! Jane attended the Church Service and this is her report. What a wonderful service it was focussing aptly on The Servant Queen – there was an extended choir aided by Paul Speed Trumpeter and led by organist Peter Dart. The hymns chosen reflected this theme and singing rose to the rafters. John’s sermon was on the theme of service and based on Mark 10: 35-45 to reinforce the message of Jesus – ‘for even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many’. A great start to the celebrations and aptly concluded with a rendition of the National Anthem and then we were ready to party... As the Service ended and the picnic began so the sun came out and we were treated to a most beautiful afternoon on the Green. Andy Ferguson was our MC for the afternoon and he did his usual excellent job in keeping everyone entertained and informed of proceedings. John and Camilla judged the Best Dressed Table Competition, won at a canter by the High Street residents, and Tim Hodges climbed the Church tower to take his photograph of the assembled masses, chaperoned by our own Lloyd Scrivener! 10 10 All the afternoon’s events went ahead without a hitch; the ‘Heads and Tails’ Competition was well supported and a very lucky resident walked off with a fantastic prize of £750, Fred in the Shed gave a spirited performance entertaining the children and their parents and received a warm round of applause, and the Birthday Cake Competition was judged by Linda, Nikki and Sheila and won by Suzanna Hanks whose cake looked absolutely stunning! Theresa May arrived on cue to award the prize to Suzanna, and Theresa gave her customary enthusiastic speech, informing everyone that the Vicar of Sonning had cancelled their village celebrations for that afternoon because of the weather! This proves that we in Wargrave are a much hardier and hopeful bunch! This was followed by the Children’s Fancy Dress Competition, judged by Wargrave’s ex Lumberjack Beaver Colony Leaders Jane, Chris and Janet, who together notched up 75 years of devoted service to scouting before retiring last year. Next up was the Glamorous Gals Competition which was judged by Lloyd, a natural choice for this demanding role! Throughout the afternoon we were treated to some lovely trad jazz music from The Elite Strollers; how nice to see some of the revellers dancing a quick step to their lively tunes! The entertainment programme finished around 4.00pm and for the rest of the afternoon we lazed around, catching up with old friends and sharing a drink or two. Perfect! There was little doubt that this had been another superb afternoon in Wargrave. The organisation of the event, shared between the Village Festival Committee and St Mary’s Church was superbly executed and we should thank all those involved. The event was always planned to be an all inclusive affair and so it proved to be. Congratulations to all involved! 11 11 THE BULL AT WARGRAVE TEL - 0118 940 3120 MOBILE - 07824 318 339 EMAIL - [email protected] SPECIAL MEAL DEALS SELECTED LUNCHTIME MENU FROM £5 – available Monday to Saturday MIDWEEK SPECIAL – available TUESDAY WEDNESDAY AND THURSDAY EVENINGS - 2 MAIN COURSES WITH A BOTTLE OF HOUSE WINE FOR £25 - selected menu, 4 choices including a vegetarian option FRIDAY NIGHT FOR FISH, CHIPS AND A BOTTLE OF FIZZ - £30 PER COUPLE JAYNE’S FAMOUS SUNDAY ROAST FROM £25 PER COUPLE EXTENSIVE AND VARIED MENU ALSO AVAILABLE KITCHEN CLOSED SUNDAY AND MONDAY EVENINGS EN SUITE ACCOMMODATION 12 Treasures in the Sand 'A lovely oasis in the midst of our hectic and often chaotic lives'. ‘A beautifully planned morning with thoughtfully presented messages to encourage and challenge us all'. ‘A wonderful opportunity to stop, sit quietly, have time to think and pray in a beautiful place surrounded by God’s creation’. These were a some of the comments made following the Quiet Morning led by Angie Buckland in May. For the second year running eighteen ladies chiefly from St Mary's met at the home of Camilla Cook's brother and sister-in-law in Goring Heath. Once again we were able to enjoy the beautiful setting and once again we were favoured with good weather. The morning kicked off with coffee and muffins baked by Camilla and culminated with a delicious ploughman's lunch prepared by members of the Ladies' Breakfast group. In between, Angie led us through a series of reflections around the theme of 'Treasure': Treasures in the sand, Treasure in jars of clay and Treasure on earth or heaven? The reflections each lasted about twenty minutes and then we were free to contemplate, aided by suggested readings, activities and music either in the barn or the extensive garden. If you have never attended such a morning, why don’t you speak to one of the ladies who came and give it a go next time? Overseas or at home? Perhaps head in to London for a day or two? Do you like travelling by Tube? The Christian faith takes us on a journey which has echoes of life start to finish. Sadly, many go through life on the Circle Line, living without God, and never wake up to true life between Hatch End (birth) and Mile End (death). If you are in London at some stage this summer the station names can remind us of the Gospel. Covent Garden: this was a real garden connected to Westminster Abbey. Looking back to early chapters of Genesis, the journey for human beings begins in a garden called Eden. There men and women enjoyed the company of God the creator and in joyful cooperation with each other. Tower Hill: even with the size of buildings now surrounding it the Tower of London is a sombre reminder of a great historical prison. This can be a reminder of us being imprisoned and locked up in our own sinful natures, and unable to escape. We are prisoners and we are not free, unable to live the way we want and unable to live the way we should. King’s Cross: the name originates in a monument, now demolished, to King George VI. The Cross of King Jesus is a monument to the love and forgiveness of God. Jesus is the King sent from heaven to save us by dying in our place. Here we see the greatest demonstration of love the world has ever known. It is the Cross of King Jesus which spells freedom. Mansion House: this is the official residence of the Lord Mayor of the City of London. Do you recall what Jesus promised those who trust and follow Him? The Lord Almighty has provided “many mansions”, which is a wonderful home He delights to share with all who come to Jesus for forgiveness. ‘In my Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you’ (John 14:2). For the follower of Jesus this is the marvellous conclusion of our journey. This summer whether you travel to Reading, London or somewhere exotic is of no ultimate importance. What matters is the journey of our life and heart, from sin to salvation, from guilt to forgiveness, from despair to hope, from chains to freedom, from self to God. If you have not started this journey yet ask a Christian friend about this, come on a Sunday, and God will be delighted to give you a free ticket, if you will step aboard. The weather was absolutely fabulous. Cambridge was bathed in sunshine and this beautiful city was a perfect location for the wedding. St Andrew the Great Church is a city centre Church but thankfully very close to a multi storey car park which many guests took advantage of! Jon and Louise had chosen a mixture of traditional and modern hymns, all of them familiar to us old hands, and the reading by John and Camilla of Psalm 103 underlines the message of unbounding love which God has for Jon and Louise and all His children, everywhere. Jon & Lou cutting their cake! Jon looked as pleased as punch throughout the Service and Louise was as beautiful as any bride has ever been. Their joy and happiness was shared with everyone in the congregation and all too soon, the Service ended and we were treated to drinks, cakes and jazz music in this lovely old Church. Verna stayed on for the wedding reception and her seat in the car was taken by John Cook, making an early exit to return home for Sunday Service planning. We all agreed it had been a great day and we wish Jon and Louise all God’s blessings in their lives together. The Tuesday Teens Group attended the wedding & had a great time! 1919 J & N.V.Q. The weather was lovely and we set forth in good cheer for another Ramble with Bob! The first part of the walk took us across the main railway line from Paddington to the West and Bob pointed out the wide gaps between the railway lines, a feature of Brunel’s early wide gauge, and the new posts for the future electrification of this line. We then proceeded along the edge of the field by the railway line and Bob explained that we were actually walking alongside what was up until 200 years ago a large stretch of water called Ruscombe Lake. This was drained and filled in for agricultural use. The rattle of trains was a constant companion for this stretch of the walk. The next point of interest was the site of a virtually completely unknown second world war airfield at West End called RAF Waltham St Lawrence. Bob explained this was an RLG – Relief Landing Ground – for White Waltham, which meant that if the Germans had bombed White Waltham and it was unusable, then planes could land in an emergency at Waltham St Lawrence. The only ‘tangible’ evidence of this airfield was the concrete approach road and the site of a machine gun nest at the entrance. It must have been a lonely spot in those dark days of WW2. We walked close by an old pub called The Plough which Steve remembered being open in his time and closed around 30 years ago. The return leg of the walk was right across the lake and we spotted a beautifully restored house called Ferryman’s Cottage. This Bob explained was once the home of the man who operated the ferry across Ruscombe Lake. We wondered how many walkers over the years have been confused by this name! We then enjoyed a tasty late lunch at The Horse and Groom and all agreed it had been another lovely walk. Bob’s next ramble is scheduled for Sunday 17 th July; this will be another later start at 2.00pm as Bob is up to his usual umpiring tricks again! We shall be meeting at The Cricketers in Waltham St Lawrence for a 2 hour stroll across the fields to Knowl Hill and returning to the pub for a late Sunday lunch. If you would like to join us please contact Bob on 0118 940 3038, mobile 07970 611013 or email [email protected], indicating whether you want to stay for lunch. 2121 22 Hymn Festival by Katie Cosnett On Sunday 22nd May 2016, 25 members of the music group, including some extra singers, sang at the 10.30am Hymn Festival service at St Mary’s Church. We sang Psalm 150, which was conducted by Liz Croft. We sang some modern and traditional hymns, such as: ‘Sing To The Lord’ from Wargrave Praise, and a Welsh hymn called ‘Guide Me, O Thou Great Redeemer’, this is a well known hymn by the congregation and by one particular person: Andy Ferguson! The next hymn we sang was ‘Jesus Is Lord’ from Wargrave Praise. During the prayers, the music group sang ‘My Peace’, which is a short taize chant. After the prayers, the music group sang a lovely anthem called ‘Ave Verum Corpus’ by Mozart, which was sung in Latin and was conducted by Liz Croft. Also, we sang ‘Love Divine’ to the Blaenwern tune. The last joyful hymn which the music group sang was ‘Christ Triumphant Ever Reigning’ with a glorious descant. The music group practised for this event for 2 hours the day before and just before the service at 9.30am. Liz Croft taught the music group some good singing techniques, especially the pronunciation of the words in Latin, breathing and how to use the voice. Peter Dart played the organ and bought the music group a tasty light lunch after the rehearsal. This event was very enjoyable and I enjoy singing in the music group at St Mary’s Church. Many thanks to Liz Croft who conducted, Peter and Rosie who organised this event, and to the singers in the music group. I look forward to another Hymn Festival next year and hopefully with some more singers. Flying Scotsman… Not the real thing! By Christine Walker The railway expert in the family says the wheel configuration is not correct, but who cares? The Flying Scotsman was just one of over sixty scarecrows at the Sonning Scarecrow Festival last month. If you have never been, this fun event is worth a visit next time around. St Andrew’s church made the most of the event, raising funds for their new hall by serving afternoon teas both days - delicious. 2323 We are professionally qualified accountants and tax consultants providing affordable and professional accounts, taxation and business advisory and support services to a wide range of businesses, charities and individuals. Born in Henley on Thames she took her “A” Levels at Henley Grammar School before going to Reading College to complete a secretarial course. She married Bob in 1978 and they have two children, Charlie 34 and Louise 31 and one granddaughter, Fonda. Bob and Sandra first met at a party in London where she was attracted to his sense of humour. Apparently he was attracted to her because of her good looks, intelligence and witty banter. (Well that is what she told me!) Although Sandra now lives in Knowl Hill – not far from her birthplace – she has worked in Paris twice. In the late sixties she moved to Paris as an au pair and was in Paris again in the early seventies working for the OECD. She has spent most of her working life in London doing a variety of temporary and permanent jobs which included working for the BBC, transcribing Hansard and working for a solicitor who specialised in film contract work. Her last job was with Newsweek in Slough. A very interesting mix. Sandra has also found time to work in the community as Secretary of the Knowl Hill Steam Rally for 13 years, being a councillor on Hurley Parish Council, Chairman of the Village Hall Committee and is a member of the Knowl Hill Village Association. She is now very active with the Fundraising and Strategy Group at Knowl Hill/Warren Row seeking grant funding for the St. Peter’s Development Project. Sandra’s hobbies include reading, she is a member of the Knowl Hill Book Club, knitting, sewing, painting and gardening. Her favourite holidays have been India (twice) and she hopes to return there and holiday in the Caribbean. Her pet hate is litter and she runs a group that picks up litter twice a year. Her passion is securing more funding for St. Peter’s so that the church may remain viable, the congregation may grow and the building be remodelled to be suitable to serve the wider community. Finally, did you know that Sandra’s family name is “Anda” because her younger brother could not pronounce her name properly. 2525 26 News from the School Knowl Hill CE Academy has enjoyed a bright and cheery first half of Summer Term. We started our new school topic – Around the World in 80 Days – with two days of creativity. The story, written by Jules Verne in 1873, saw Phileas Fogg win the bet to journey around the circumference of the globe. Every class, from Foundation to Year 6, built a float to represent a different country that Mr Fogg travelled through. Using our design and technology skills, the skyscrapers of Hong Kong were erected, the Great Pyramids were constructed and wire and mod-roc were combined to create the Angel of the North! Then, on one sunny morning, we had our very own carnival! Every class paraded their float around the playground, singing and dancing, to an audience of parents and pupils. The following week saw a momentous birthday. On the 21st April, our school uniforms were swapped for a sea of white, blue and red clothes. Then, after our playground was enveloped in Union Jack bunting, we all ate lunch together. To celebrate the 90th birthday of our Queen, we jumped on bouncy castles, passed the parcel, and decorated our faces with face-painted flags! In the course of Phileas Fogg’s journey, he used many modes of transport. Therefore, all of KS1, have had the opportunity to visit the Henley River and Rowing Museum this term for a workshop. Not only did they take a tour along the river, but they built their own model boats, and learnt the correct terminology for parts of a boat. This term, the value we are focussing on in Collective Worship is ‘Service’. Every day, particularly as we look at Pentecost and how God’s Holy Spirit helps us to serve others, we spend part of our act of worship looking at what this value means. Every class will have the opportunity to lead collective worship at St Peter’s Church this term, during our special Friday services, exploring this value through stories, drama, song and prayer. Year 4 brought to us the story of Jesus washing his disciples’ feet, and exploring what it means to be the greatest! 2727 The Mount Care Home Beautiful on the Outside Caring on the Inside The Mount has been purpose built behind an impressive house in the heart of the gorgeous village of Upper Wargrave, two miles from Twyford, four miles from Henley on Thames and six miles from Reading. Married to Ray for 56 years, theirs was a true partnership, always loving and supportive. Sylvia helped Ray with the paperwork and made endless cups of tea when he managed the market traders at the Steam Rally. He cleaned the brasses at St. Peter’s while she arranged the flowers, which she did for many years until three months ago when illness prevented her from continuing. Sylvia was born in Star Lane, she and Ray were married in St. Peter’s and had their reception at the Seven Stars, as her parents had, and they settled in Choseley Road where they brought up their family. Sylvia loved her garden and she and Ray worked together to keep it looking immaculate. When Ray retired they enjoyed many coach tours together. We thank Sylvia and Ray for all they have done for St. Peter’s. She will be greatly missed. CAMEO On Sunday 12th June Ted and June Sulley hosted a delicious tea for the CAMEO group to celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday. Although it was decided to have tea inside because of the threat of rain, the sun came out and gave everyone the chance to enjoy Ted and June’s beautiful garden. We raised a glass to Her Majesty, sang Happy Birthday and wished her many more years to reign over us. 2929 Funerals & Cremations at St Mary’s 17th May Herbert Paramour, aged 84 years, Funeral at Reading Crematorium 20th May Brian David Stockton-Kennedy, aged 87 years, Funeral and Committal at Reading Crematorium 23rd May Michael William McQueen, aged 83 years, Funeral at Easthampstead Crematorium 25th May Barbara Anne Cormack, aged 77 years, Funeral at Reading Crematorium Baptism at St Mary’s 8th May Amelie Kathrynn Bennett Jacob James Bennett 15th May Raymond Samuel Estop Vicar The Revd.
