2009-2010 - Pauahi Foundation
ANNUAL REPORT 2009 - 2010
Letter from the President and Executive Director
Aloha mai kākou,
At birth, Pauahi’s father, Abner Pākī, planted a tamarind sapling to signify the
beginning of her life. The sapling flourished and grew into a tall and magnificent
tree. Pauahi often sat with her people under this very tree listening to them and
offering advice – a strong indication of the life she lived and the love she held for
her people.
Today, with the unwavering support from our Kamehameha
Schools’ alumni, friends and ‘ohana, Pauahi’s legacy of giving
has grown big and strong like the tamarind tree that signified
her life, her legacy.
Despite a slowly recovering economy, our generous donors
contributed over $400,000 towards life-changing educational
opportunities for people of Hawaiian ancestry.
At the core of our supporters is a proud and devoted group
of Kamehameha Schools’ alumni who understand the
benefits of Pauahi’s legacy and chose to perpetuate that
legacy for the benefit of Hawaiian people. In the 2009 – 2010
fiscal year, the Foundation saw a 57% increase in alumni
participation from the previous fiscal year. The Alumni Week
Golf Tournament, in particular, raised over $20,000 for the Nā
Koa Ho‘oulu scholarship.
Kamehameha Schools’ staff and faculty continue to be
constant contributors to our mission. Our Work Place Giving
campaign generated over $30,000 of support for
the Foundation.
“Kahiau,” or to give generously from the heart, continues to
be a focus for the Foundation with the Pennies for Pauahi
program on Kamehameha Schools’ campuses. Originally
started at our Kea’au campus’ elementary school, the
program has grown to include multiple grade levels and
campuses. It is clear that the seeds of giving continue to
grow within our young leaders.
The Foundation’s impact is solely the result of your
dedication and support for what we do and stand for. We are
graciously thankful for your kōkua, and ask for your continued
support as we continue to grow Pauahi’s legacy of giving just
like the tamarind tree.

PAUAHI’S LEGACY
CONTINUES TO GROW
Advancing Educational Opportunities
for More Hawaiians
In addition to the scholarships that Ke Ali‘i Pauahi Foundation
administers, there are four areas of interest where donors may
designate their support to assist more children of Hawaiian ancestry.
CHARTER SCHOOL SUPPORT
One of the ways in which Pauahi’s legacy is being extended
to reach haumāna who are not able to attend Kamehameha
Schools’ campuses is through Charter School support. The
Foundation is helping to build awareness and get support for
these courageous schools that give haumāna a choice at a
culturally rich education. Hawaiian-focused start-up public
Charter schools offer unique services to children and families
based on culturally grounded pedagogy and instruction.
Additionally, the Foundation and the Harold K.L. Castle
Foundation have partnered to support literacy education
programs in Windward O‘ahu public schools. Studies have
shown that increasing competence in writing and reading
predicts future success in school. Simple skills that many
of us take for granted are not guaranteed, so the support
that comes from our Foundation and others makes a
lifetime difference.
Haumāna attending these Charter Schools achieve marked
academic improvement, become leaders in all that they do
and represent their kūpuna well.
ADVANCING THE HAWAIIAN LANGUAGE
The demand for culturally relevant education is growing. Most
Charter Schools have wait lists of students who would like to
attend but aren’t able to because of limited funding for facilities
and operations. Some schools are operating out of temporary
facilities and funding their activities from their own pockets.
Through Kamehameha Schools’ Ho‘olako Like program, each of
the 14 Hawaiian-Focused Charter Schools are given assistance
with their daily operational needs and facility improvements.
While these schools are doing an excellent job with the limited
resources they have, they could do even more with our kōkua.
EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION AND LITERACY
The Early Childhood Education and Literacy Fund is very
important to the Foundation’s mission to serve more children
of Hawaiian ancestry. By providing literacy support to
students, their parents and caregivers, and by promoting
culturally relevant learning, these keiki will get the kōkua they
need to achieve future success in school.
Contributions made to Ke Ali‘i Pauahi Foundation for the
purpose of Advancing the Hawaiian Language will assist
efforts to preserve Hawaiian language and heritage, like
the work of ‘Aha Pūnana Leo, Hawaiian immersion schools
or other efforts to build and share ‘Ōlelo Hawai‘i. The
Foundation is also working with Kamehameha Publishing
to distribute books written in ‘Ōlelo Hawai‘i to K-12 schools
throughout Hawai‘i.
LAND STEWARDSHIP
Funds raised through the Foundation’s Land Stewardship
Fund will support efforts to mālama i ka ‘āina. Historically,
land has always been an integral part of Hawaiian culture.
Through support from our generous donors, the Foundation
will support those who are preserving these precious lands
for all generations, assuring that precious natural and cultural
resources are cared for.

LEGACY OF A FAMILY: LEONG ‘OHANA
CREATES PERPETUAL SCHOLARSHIP
Classmates and high school sweethearts Lance Leong
KSK’83 and Andrea Hussey Leong KSK’83 know that a
good education can open doors to a brighter future. It did for
them – both earned degrees in business management from
the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa and are thriving in the
newspaper and lending fields.
For years, the business-minded couple saved and
budgeted their money wisely to buy a home and provide
a quality education for their keiki. In September, they
took some of that hard-earned money and established a
scholarship for needy students through Ke Ali‘i Pauahi
Foundation. Their decision had the full support of their
daughters.
“We could’ve splurged the money on an Alaskan cruise or
Las Vegas trip but the excitement would’ve only lasted a few
weeks,” said Lance. “Establishing an endowed scholarship
will help needy students pursue their dreams of higher
education and bring a sense of accomplishment and peace
to our hearts – not just for a few weeks – but each and every
day of our lives.”
Lance and Andrea stretched the value of their dollars by
taking advantage of Ke Ali‘i Pauahi Foundation’s matching
incentive program. The program helped boost the value
of their endowment by contributing a dollar for every two
dollars donated.
The Leong ‘Ohana - left to right: Lauren KSK’12, Leiana, Andrea KSK’83,
Lindsey KSK’13, and Lance KSK’83
The Leong ‘ohana gave a generous $13,500 and the
Foundation contributed $6,750 for a total of $20,250. The
minimum amount needed to create an endowed scholarship
is $20,000. The principal amount of the endowment will
remain intact and the interest earned will fund annual
scholarships in perpetuity.
As for the Leongs’ Vegas trip, it may have to wait until next
year. For now, they are betting on a brighter future for a
needy college student. Lance and Andrea believe that it was
a wise bet indeed.
“It is such an easy choice to make a short-term sacrifice in
order to make a long-lasting difference in the life of others,”
said Lance. “We hope that in the future, each of our children
will find it in their hearts to establish a scholarship fund in
their names as well, to carry on our tradition of giving.”
“It is such an easy choice to make a short-term sacrifice in order to make
a long-lasting difference in the life of others.”

CLASS OF 2001 SCHOLARSHIP
The class of 2001 is well on its way to establishing an

donations from nearly 60 classmates, white elephant sales,
and other fundraising activities, the class has collected over
$10,000.
Dawson Kaaua and Christine Hew, who are both
co-chairing the class of 2001 scholarship board, hope to start
a shift in the mindset of their classmates from beneficiary to
benefactor.

“Kamehameha has given tremendously to me and each
of my classmates, and it is now our time to ‘pay it forward’
and give back to the school through Ke Ali‘i Pauahi
Foundation to help other Native Hawaiians.”
- Dawson Kaaua KSK’01

Giving To The Foundation
HOW YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE
Contributions made to Ke Ali‘i Pauahi Foundation reflect
gifts for the heart and will help to carry forward the vision of
Ke Ali‘i Pauahi to empower Hawaiians through education.
The Foundation is a 501 (c) (3) tax-exempt organization;
therefore, contributions made to the Foundation are tax
deductible to the extent permitted by law. Additionally, 100
percent of your gift goes to help others as Kamehameha
Schools covers the Foundation’s administrative and
overhead expenses.
Unrestricted Donations: Unrestricted gifts allow the
Foundation the flexibility to respond to the areas of most
critical need. These outright gifts include cash appreciated
property (real estate, stock) or tangible personal property.
Restricted Donations: Restricted gifts define a program,
project or scholarship of special interest to the donor.
Tribute Gifts: Tribute gifts are made in honor or memory of
individuals, family members, friends or colleagues who have
inspired you or touched your heart. This is a meaningful way
to honor loved ones in perpetuity.
Future Gifts: A future gift is arranged now, but the
Foundation’s use of the funds is delayed to a later time. The
funds from bequest are available to utilize at the end of the
donor’s life. Other ways of making a future gift are naming
the Foundation as beneficiary of a portion of an IRA or other
retirement plan, or life insurance policy, or establishing a
charitable remainder trust with the principal payable to the
Foundation when the trust terminates.
Corporate Matching Gifts: Corporations will often match
an employee’s charitable gift dollar for dollar. Please check
with your employer to see if your contribution qualifies for
this category.
