Objectives: The objectives of the Spencer Historical and Genealogical Society, Inc. (SHGS) are to
encourage and promote the accurate recording of family data, vital statistics, and individual
accomplishment of both direct family descendants and those related to or otherwise associated with
a Spencer line, and also instill, in Spencer descendants, a sense of pride in their ancestral lineage.
Membership is open to descendants of any and all Spencer lines, and associated lines.
Journal Material: Interested persons are invited to submit material to be considered for publication
in Ie Despencer, the quarterly journal of the Spencer Historical and Genealogical Society, Inc.,
which is published in February, May, August and November and distributed to all members. Articles

Happy 2008! This is a new year, and we have some new developments in our Society. As you
know, Patrick Spencer # 19 assumed the Treasurer's job last year, and Bobbi Steele # 1063 asked to be
relieved ofthe Librarian's position. So, please join me in welcoming Mary (Spencer) Post #2107 as
our new SHGS Librarian. The transition period will require some time to move the books from
Indianapolis to Mary in southeast Texas, and Editor Dick is assisting in this task. Thanks, Dick! Please
be patient as Mary learns the ropes and becomes familiar with the holdings of the SHGS Library.
Virgil Spencer #830, a long-time member and former President of SHGS, passed on last year and
his daughter sent some of Virgil's family files to me for preservation. Coincidentally, I came across a
copy of a Genealogical Will which is titled "Genealogical Codicil to My last Will and Testament"
which is published in this journal. Please read it! Then, think about what this simple document could
do. Every member of this organization obviously has an interest in family history and has data that is
important which should not be relegated to the trash heap when we meet our Maker. Think about it,
and use this document to ensure that your family information is placed with the most appropriate
individual or organization so the data is preserved to the benefit of future generations. Don't wait!
It is exciting news that the dates and location for the SHGS 2008 Reunion have been fmalized!
The dates are September 25-28 near Valley Forge PA. Our hotel will be the Hampton Inn in Plymouth

SPENCERS of Halifax Co .• VA: Thomas SPENCER, born about 1695, died about 1775,
married about 1719 to Margaret (unknown). The wife's name comes from Halifax Will Book 1,
Page 29 (1883-1783). Thomas and Margaret had six (6)children: Abraham, Thomas Sharpe,
William, Elizabeth, Rachel and Susannah.
Abraham SPENCER, b abt 1720, d abt 1761 in Halifax Co, m abt 1755 to Lucy Dickerson in
Hanover Co, VA. She was b abt 1737 in Hanover Co, d. 1832 in Caldwell Co, NC after a 2nd
marriage after death of Abraham. Abraham & Lucy had five (5) children: Griffith, Abraham,
Susannah, Lucy & John. (Halifax Will Book 1, Pgs 40), Accounts Current, orphans to Nathaniel
Terry, their Guardian. Also Halifax County, Virginia Court Orders, 1771-1773, Plea Book No.7,
Part 2. ; Page 90 in September Court 1775: Nathaniel Terry, Gent., Guardian of the Orphans of
Abraham Spencer, dec'd, returned and made oath to an account of the profits of his said estates,
which is OR.
JOHN SPENCER of HALIFAX Co. VA ,bornabt 1761, dJune 1817 in Halifax Co, VA,
married April 1765 to Mollay (Molly) Clopton in Pitt sylvania Co, VA. She was born. about 1763
in New Kent Co, VA, died about Sept (????) in Halifax County, Virginia, The Marriage Bonds
and Minister's Returns for Pittsylvania County, Virginia, Page 82, shows that John Spencer and
Mollay (Molly) Clopton married on 18 April 1785, with Mollay's (Molly's) father, Robert

February 2008 With a "small beginning" with Chris Spencer as our first Librarian, the Library began its growth
under the guidance of Dr. Rowena Spencer. She was responsible for arranging and organizing the
material published by Flora S. Clark on the lineage of the Four Spencer Brothers of New
England. Bob Johnson took over from Dr. Rowena Spencer and organized the entire Library
Collection. At that time the collection was small enough to be shipped by USPS or UPS from
New Orleans to Kettering, OH.. By the time that Bobbi Steele assumed the Librarian position,
many of the publications had begun to show wear, and were not reproducing well. During her
term in office, Bobbi has "cleaned up" many books, and scanned records and books so that they
may be printed from a computer rather than by photocopying. The Library had grown is size, so
was transported by car from Bob's home in Kettering, OH (near Dayton) to Bobbi's home in
Indianapolis. The current move required a lot more effort because of the volume. Bobbi & Harry
Steele brought two (2) loads to me (Dick Spencer), in Franklin, TN. where I live. Those made up
one load in my vehicle, which I delivered to Mary Post in Texas on February 2,2008. As of this
writing, there is one more load for Bobbi to deliver to me, for transport to Mary.

AsaSpencer
SPENCER, Asa, solder, b. in Salilsbury, Conn., in September 1747; d. in Fort Covington, N.Y. in
1828. The first ancestor of the Spencer family, William, came from England to Cambridge, Mass., in
1631, and again in 1633 with his brothers Thomas and Jared. William and Thomas were among the first
settlers of Hartford, Conn., the former being a landed proprietor, a select-man of the town, and a deputy
of the general court of Connecticut in 1639. He prepared the first revisal ofthe laws of that colony, and
died in Hartford in 1640. His descendant in the fifth generation, Asa, served throughout the war of the
Revolution, and was under Gen., Anthony Wayne at the storming of Stony Point. He early espoused the
principles of Democracy under Thomas Jefferson.
His son, James Bradley, soldier, b. in Salisbury, Conn., 26 April 1781, d. in Fort Covington, N.Y., 26
March 1848, was an early settler of Franklin County, N.Y., raised a company for the war of 1812, and
served as captain in the 29th U.S. Infantry at Plattsburg. Subsequently he was county judge and surrogate,
and held other local offices in Fort Covington, served in the legislature in 1831-<2, and was elected to
congress as a Democrat, serving from 4 Sept 1837, till 3 March 1839.
Another son, Ahner Peck, settled with his father and brother at Fort Covington, was captain in the
29th U.S. Infantry in 1812, and, remaining in the army, was appointed military governor of Arkansas.
James Bradley's son, James Clark, jurist, b. in Fort Covington, Franklin Co., N.Y., 29 May 1826
studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1848, and practised in his native town and in Ogdensburg until
1865, serving as U.S. district attorney for four years. He then removed to New York and entered into
partnership with Charles A. Rapallo. From 1869 till 1872 he was a judge of the superior court of New
York, afterward practising law until 188), when he was appointed an aqueduct commissioner.
Ambrose Spencer
William's descendant in the fifth generation, Ambrose, jurist, h. in Salisbury, Conn., 13 Dec 1765; d.
in Lyons, N.Y., 13 March 1848, was educated at Yale and Harvard where he was graduated in 1783. He
studied law under John Canfield, of Sharon, Conn., and settled in Hudson, N.Y., where he was appointed
city clerk in 1786. He was elected to the assembly in 1793 and in 1795 to the state senate, serving until
1798, when he was re-elected for four years. He was the author of a bill, which became a law, to abolish
capital punishment in all cases except those of treason and murder, substituting imprisonment and hard
labor. He also secured the erection of a state prison near New York City. In 1796 he was appointed
assistant attorney-general of Columbia and Rensselaer counties, and in 1802-<4 he was attorney-general

of the state. In 1804 he became a justice of the supreme court, of which he was chief justice from 1819
ti 11 1823. In 1808 he was chosen by the legislature, with Peter J. Munro, to prepare and report such
reforms in the chancery system of the state as they should deem expedient.
Judge Spencer possessed energy, resolution, and high legal attainments, and was a master of equity
jurisprudence. He served as a presidential elector in 1809. He was the warm friend of DeWitt Clinton,
but separated from him on the question of the War of 1812, and in that year was active in the struggle to
prevent the charter of the six-million bank. He was a member of the State constitutional convention of
1821.
After he resumed the practice of law in Albany he held various local offices, and was mayor of that
city in 1824-'6. He was then elected to congress, serving from Dec. 1829 till 3 March 1831, and during
his term united with William Wirt and other philanthropists in endeavoring to arrest the injustice of the
government toward the Cherokees. In 1839 he removed to Lyons N.Y. where he engaged in agriculture.
He was president ofthe Whig national convention in Baltimore in 1844. The University of Pennsylvania
gave him the degree of LL. D. in 1819 and Harvard the same in 1821. His last public act was to address
a letter to his fellow-citizens in opposition to a proposed amendment to the constitution providing for an
elective judiciary with brief terms of office. His decisions are contained in the ''New York Supreme
Court Reports, 1799-1803" edited by William Johnson (3 vols., New York, 1808-'12), and "New York
Chancery Reports" (1814-'23).
John Canfield Spencer
His [Ambrose's] son, John Canfield, lawyer, b. in Hudson N.Y., 8 Jan
1788, d. in Albany N.Y., 18 May 1855, was graduated at Union college in
1806, and in 1807 became private secretary to Gov. Daniel D. Tompkins. He
was admitted to the bar at Canandaigua in 1809, became master in chancery
in 1811,judge-advocate-general in the army on the northern frontier in 1813,
postmaster of Canandaigua in 1814, and assistant attorney-general for
western New York in 1815. In that year he was also made district attorney.
He was then elected to congress as a Democrat, serving from 1 Dec. 1817 till
3 March 1819, and during his term was one of a committee to examine the
affairs of the U.S. bank, and drew up its report. Fifteen years afterward, when
Gen. Andrew Jackson was using this report against the bank, Mr. Spencer
was found among its friends.
In 1820-'1 he was a member of the state house of representatives, serving in the first year as speaker,
and in 1824-'8 he was a member of the state senate, being a leader ofthe Clinton faction. In 1827 he was
appointed by Gov. DeWitt Clinton one ofthe board to revise the statutes of New York, and took an
important part of that task. Joining the anti-Masonic party, he was appointed special attorney-general to
prosecute those that were connected with the abduction of William Morgan, but resigned in May 1830
having involved himself in a controversy with Gov. Enos T. Throop.
In 1832 he was again elected to the legislature, and in 1839-40 he was secretary of state and
superintendent of common schools. He was appointed U.S. secretary of war on 12 Oct 1841 and on 3
March 1843 was transferred to the treasury department, but opposing the annexation of Texas,
resigned on 2 May 1844 and resumed the practice oflaw.

He served on many state commissions and aided in the organization of the State asylum for idiots. In
1840 he was made a regent of Union college, which gave him the degree of LL. D. in 1849. He published
an edition of Henry Reeve's translation of De Tocqueville's "Democracy in America", contributing a
preface and notes (2 vols., new York, 1838) and also, with John Duer and Benjamin F. Butler, a
"Revision of the Statutes of New York" (3 vols, Albany, 1846). See "Review of John C. Spencer's Legal
and Political Career" by Lucien B. Proctor (new York, 1886).
William Ambrose Spencer
Another son of Ambrose, William Ambrose, d. in New York City 3 March 1854, was appointed
midshipman in the U.S. navy 15 nov 1809, became lieutenant on 9 Dec 1814, commander on 3 March
1813, and captain 22 Jan 1841, and resigned on 9 Dc 1843. He was acting lieutenant in Com. Thomas
Macdonough's victory on Lake Champlain II Sept 1814.
Theodore Spencer
Another son of Ambrose, Theodore, clergyman, b. in Hudson, N.Y., 24 April 1800; d. in Utica, N.Y.,
14 June 1870. He entered the U.S. military academy, but left it to study law, and, beginning to practise in
Auburn, N.Y., became district attorney for Cayuga county. Afterward he studied theology, was pastor of
the 2d Congregational Church in Rome, and preached also in Utica. Retiring from active work, owing to
impaired health, he was made secretary ofthe American home missionary society for central and
northern New York, He was the author of "Conversion, its Theory and Process Practically Delineated"
(New York, 1854), and other theological works.
Ichabod Smith Spencer
Thomas's descendant in the sixth generation, Tchabod Smith, clergyman b. in Rupert, VT., 23 Feb
1798; d. in Brooklyn N.Y., 23 Nov 1854, was graduated at Union in 1822 and was principal of the
grammar-school in Schenectady, N.Y. until 1825, and of an academy in Canandaigua, N.Y., until 1828.
After studying theology he was licensed by the presbytery of Geneva in 1826, and on 11 Sept 828
was appointed colleague pastor, with the Rev. Solomon Williams, of the Congregational Church in
Northampton, Mass., remaining until 1832. He then became pastor of the 2d presbyterian Church of
Brooklyn, N.Y., which charge he held until his death.
From 1836 till 1840 he was professor extraordinary in biblical history in Union theological seminary,
New York, of which institution he was a founder. In 1830 he was offered the presidency of the
University of Alabama and in 1832 that of Hamilton. The latter college gave him the degree ofD.D. in
1841. His best-known publication is his "Pastor's Sketches" which passed through many editions, and
was republished in England and France 92 series, New York, 1850-'3). After his death appeared
"Sermons" with a memoir by the Rev. James M. Sherrod (2 vols, 1855); "Sacramental Discourses"
(1861), and "Evidences of Divine Revelation" (1865).

Joseph Spencer
Jared's [Gerard] descendant in the fourth generation, Joseph, soldier, b. in East Haddam, Conn., in
1714, d. there 13 Jan 1798, joined the northern anny in 1758, and was major in the 2d Connecticut
Regiment under Col. Nathaniel Whiting. He served as lieutenant-colonel in the two following campaigns,
rose to the rank of colonel, and was one of the eight brigadier-generals appointed by congress at the
instance of Gen. Washington on 22 June 1775. Taking offence when Gen. Israel Putnam, a younger
officer, was appointed over him, he was about to retire from the anny, but deciding to remain, served
near Boston until its evacuation, and then marched with his division to the defence of New York. On 9
Aug 1776 he was appointed major-general, and opposed the evacuation of New York.
Gen. Spencer was ordered in 1778 to take command at Rhode Island, which was surrounded by
Admiral Sir Peter Parker. The British army having taken possession of Newport, Gen. Spencer assembled
a large force at Providence, but the enterprise proved a failure, and, after remaining in the vicinity for
several weeks, the militia was dismissed. Gen. Spencer was censured for the failure of this expedition,
but a court of inquiry attributed the result to forces beyound his controL He resigned on 14 June 1778 in
consequence of an order of congress to inquire into the reasons for his failure, and afterward appeared
but little in public life.
Elihu Spencer
His [Joseph Spencer, above] brother, Elihu, clergyman, b. in East Haddam Conn., 12 Feb 1721, d. in
Trenton N.J. 27 Dec 1784, was graduated at Yale in 1746, and with a view to becoming a missionary to
the Indians of the Six Nations, studied their dialect and prepared himself for this office under the Rev.
John Brainerd and Jonathan Edwards, accompanying the latter to the Indian conference in Albany in
1748.
He was ordained 14 Sept 1748 and, after laboring in western New York, was appointed pastor of the
Presbyterian church in Elizabeth N.J., in 1750, holding this charge until 1756 when he was called to the
Presbyterian church of Jamaica, L.I. [Long Island, NY]. About 1758 he was appointed by gov. James De
Lancy chaplain of the new York troops that were fonning for service in the French war, after which he
labored in the contiguous congregations of Shrewsbury, Middletown Point, Shark River, and Amboy,
N.J.
In 1764 he was sent by the synod of New York and Philadelphia with the Rev. Alexander McWhorter
on a mission to organize the irregular congregations of North Carolina, which district they again visited
in 1775 at the request of the Provincial congress of that colony. As he had contributed to the cause of
independence, the Tories were embittered toward him, and on one occasion burned books and papers of
his that had fallen into their possession.
From 1769 until his death he was pastor of the Presbyterian church in Trenton, N.J. He was
frequently called "Readymoney Spencer" from his facility in extempore address. From 1752 until his
death he was a guardian of Princeton college. The University of Pennsylvania gave him the degree of
D.D. in 1782. In 1759 he wrote a letter to the Rev. Ezra Stiles, afterward president of Yale, on "The State
of the Dissenting Interest in the Middle Colonies of America" which was published and attracted
attention.

Aubrey George Spencer
Aubrey George Spencer, colonial Anglican bishop, b. in London, England, 12 Feb 1785; d. in Torquay,
England, 24 Feb 1872. He was the eldest son of William Robert, who was well known in England as a
wit and poet of society, and his brother, George Trevor, was bishop of Madras in 1837-'49, and
chancellor of St. Paul's cathedral, London, in 1860.
After receiving his education at Oxford he held several curacies in England, and was appointed
archdeacon of Bermuda in 1812, bishop of Newfoundland in 1839, and bishop of Jamaica, W.I., in 1843 .
He published a volume of "Sermons on Various Subjects" (London, 1827), and numerous fugitive
poems.
Francis Elias Spencer
Francis Elias Spencer,jurist, b. in Ticonderoga, Essex Co., NY, 25 Sept 1834. When he was twelve years
of age his parents removed to Plainfield, Ill. Hearing exciting accounts of the wealth that was to be
acquired in California, he removed to that state in 1852 and located at San Jose, where he has since
resided. Soon after his arrival he began the study of the law, was admitted to the bar in 1858, and soon
secured an extensive practice.
In 1861 he was elected district attorney of Santa Clara County, which office he filled until March 1866.
Desiring to make a specialty of land practice, he studied the Spanish language and made himself
thoroughly familiar with the legislation of Spain and Mexico regarding real property.
In 1871 he was elected to the lower branch of the legislature as a Republican, and was made chairman of
the judiciary committee. In that capacity he was of great assistance to his colleagues in shaping the code
legislation of the session. At its close he retired from political life. In 1879 he was elevated to the bench
of the superior court of Santa Clara County where he still (1888) remains. For a number of years he was a
member of the board of fund commissioners of the city of San Jose, and was mainly instrumental in
settling its title to the large body of its Puebla lands. He has recently been appointed a trustee of the
Leland Stanford, Jr., University, California.

GROWING UP WITH MY OWN DANCE PAVILION

I was 8 years old in October 1929. We moved into our new home the first of that month.
It was a five bedroom colonial home, built on the farm where I grew up. My great-grandfather
homesteaded our farm in 1856. It was on a lake in a wooded area in southern Minnesota. We all
know what happened at the end of that month in 1929, and then the Great Depression set in.
Mittens were all my parents could afford to give us for Christmas that year because of the
expenses of the new house and the onslaught of the Depression.
But my parents had bigger worries than what would be under the Christmas tree. I had
two older sisters, and their education was ahead. My Mother was determined that her daughters
go to college. This was a tough enough goal to set in those days, even before the Depression hit.
But Mother was a strong woman and not one to be daunted by lack of farm income. There
must be another way.
So she dreamed up the idea of building a dance pavilion on the farm. The setting was
perfect, in the woods by the lake. We were in a good location for the big bands. Lawrence Welk
came from South Dakota, and many bands came out of Chicago and played at several places
along the Iowa-Minnesota border. We were just one day's bus ride from where one of the bands
played on a regular basis. So we built the pavilion.
During the summers, we worked all week preparing for the Friday night dance. On
Monday and Tuesday the "bills" - the posters advertising what band was coming- had to be
posted. Mother went around each May and gave season passes to about two places in each small
town in a three or four county area.
My two older sisters posted bills for a few years; then they had other jobs and it was my
turn. I was only 14 when I first took the family car, and set out with a girl friend and a bag of
lunch. We had our "run" to cover and it took all day.
Of cour~e, we had fun on the side, too. We knew boys from the basketball teams in every
town, so we sometimes drove around looking for them. I used to say, "We chased boys all over
southern Minnesota." However that was an exaggeration as we do our job responsibly.
I remember when I had to post a bill at a beer place; I ran in and out quickly. We dove in
one direction one day, making a half circle. The next day we made the half circle in the other
direction.
Our work picked up in a hurry on Friday mornings. We all sat around the kitchen table
and buttered the hamburger buns. We sliced each bun and then put a small amount of butter
around just the very edge.

When the Pavilion first opened in 1930 or so, I was too young to stay late and I had to
walk through the woods at 9:30 p.m. I's get to bed and lie there listening to the music through
the open window. I could hardly wait to grow up.
Gradually, I was allowed to stay at the Pavilion later, working in the hamburger and pop
stand. I was allowed to dance with my dad before I could dance with anyone else. My oldest
sister sold tickets and my other sister worked in the cloakroom or pop stand. Dad took tickets and
stamped peoples hands at the door and mother and a friend made the hamburgers and sold pop.
There was enough work to keep them all busy.
Finally, I was old enough to dance with the boys. My sisters and I always wrote dances
down ahead of time because we had so many offers we couldn't remember them all or the order.
The rough lumber walls of the Pavilion became our dance cards.
Most of the boys and girls came to the Pavilion without dates. Mothers brought carloads
of girls, and they sat throughout the evening right outside the hall windows where they could
watch and enjoy the music.
Our Dance Pavilion was a great success. It was a fun and enjoyable part of my youth.
Most every kid in the area could scrape up a dime for the Friday night dance. It was the highlight
of the week for many, and it put all three of us girls through college.
The Pavilion stayed in operation until 1940, when the Draft ended the traveling of the big
bands.
Years later, dad tore the building down and used the lumber for something else. I was
disappointed that he didn't tell me ahead oftime. I would have retrieved a board with my dances
written on it for a souvenir.

SPENCER AND MAUPIN- TRADITION and FACT

Any number of publications have stated as a fact that Gabriel Maupin, the Huguenot Immigrant,
married Marie (or Mary) Spencer, daughter of Earl Spencer, an English nobleman. Dr. Socrates
Maupin began working on the Maupin family history, and worked with Dr. George Washington
Opie Maupin, until 1871 when Dr. Socates Maupin was killed in an accident. Dr, G.W.O. Maupin
died in 1887. Apparently they had not documented their research before their deaths and had not
published their findings. In 1901, the "Virginia Magazine", published by the Virginia Historical
Society, in Vol. VIII, had an article on the Maupin family in which it stated that Gabriel Maupin
was a French exile who had fled France for England and remained there with his father-in-law, an
English nobleman for some period of time, until about 1700. Other publications which repeated
this story were: "The Huguenot",Pub, #3, Pg 24; and "The Maupin Family" by Nell Sherman.
In the 1970's, Dorothy Maupin Shaffett began her Maupin family research, and she kept
encountering the same story about Gabriel having married Marie (Mary) Spencer, daughter of an
English nobleman. Each time, the story could be traced back to the undocumented and
unpublished work of Dr. Socrates and De. G.W.O Maupin. In "The Huguenot Emigration", by
R.A. Brock, there is a passenger list for "The Nassau" which arrived in Williamsburg in 1700,
listing Gabriel Maupin and his wife and 3 children.. Thel719 Will of Gabriel Maupin, probated in
1720 listed his wife, Marie, with children, Gabriel (Jr), Daniel and Marie Maupin.
Mrs. Shaffett did her research both in Europe and in the Untied States, and eventually found a
record of a marriage in Amsterdam, and this led to contacting authorities in that city. A letter
from the Director of Municipal Archives in Amsterdam, dated June 4, 1985, stated that Gabiel
Maupin (originally from Gargau, France) and Marie Erssen (originally from Rouen, France) had
published their "banns" at the Walloon Church in Amsterdam on August 18, 1691, and that the
marriage had been solemnized at that church. It also contained copies of baptismal records of the
Maupin children, born between 1692 and 1698 in Amsterdam.
Gabriel and Marie's son, Daniel, was born about 1700, which was when the family emigrated to
Williamsburg. Daniel married Margaret Via. Two sons of Daniel and Margate (Via) Maupin were:
Gabriel Maupin,IV, who married Ann Ballard; and William Maupin who married Mildred White.
Thomas Maupin, one son of Gabriel IV and Ann Ballard Maupin, married Ann Spencer, daughter
of John and Rosanna Graves Spencer of Albemarle Co, VA. on June 10 1784. David Maupin,
another son of Gabriel IV and Ann Ballard Maupin, married Sarah (Susan) Spencer, sister of Ann
Spencer, on October 13, 1785. Chapman White Maupin, son of William and Mildred White
Maupin, married Mary Graves Spencer, sister of Ann and Sarah Spencer, on December 26, 1805.
He was a cousin of David and William Maupin. Here is where the Maupins and Spencers
connected.

The Spencer DNA Project has been a real boon to genealogical research. DNA results have verified
earlier suspected ancestry, or ruled it out and put individuals on the correct path in their research efforts.

DIANA FRANCES SPENCER, PRINCESS OF WALES

Her Lineage

After the untimely death of Princess Diana, a number of inquiries have been received about her
ancestry. Earlier issues of Le Despencer have included parts of the ancestry. There are different
versions of the very early Spencers, and since they are not proven, we will start with proven
lineage which begins about the year 1500 AD.
SPENCER LINEAGE
The Proven Northamptonshire Line
Through the 8th Earl Spencer, the Earldom created 1 Nov. 1765
l. Sir John Spencer, Knight\ date of birth unknown, died 14 April 1522, married Dame Isabell
Graunt, daughter of Walter Graunt, Esq. Of Snitterfield County, Warwickshire, date unknown.
John was High Sheriff of Northamptonshire, knighted in 1519 according to Horace Round, but
according to a pamphlet at Althorp, he was knighted in 1511 at York Place, which is now
Whitehall. He is buried at Great Brington. Sir John and Dame Isabell Spencer had the following
children:
a. Sir William Spencer, Knighe
b. Anthony Spencer, died without issue.
c. Jane Spencer, who married Richard Knightley, son and heir of Sir Richard Knightley, of
Fawsley in Co. Northamptonshire.
d. Isabell, who married Sir Nicholas Strelly, Knight, of Strelly in Co. Nothamptonshire
e. Dorothy, who married Sir Richard Catesbie, Knight, of Legere in Co. Northamptonshire
2. Sir William Spencer, Knighe, date of birth unknown, died 1532, married Susanna Knightley in
1522. She was the daughter of Richard Knightley, and sister of Richard Knightley who married
Susanna's sister, Jane. Their children were as follows:

3. Sir John Spence~, also known as Sir John Spencer of Althorp, born 1524, died 1586. In 1545
he married Katherine Kitson, daughter of Sir Thomas Kitson, a wealthy merchant in Hengrave,
Suffolk. (John Washington, father of Lawrence Washington of Sulgrave Manor in
Northamptonshire, married Margaret Kitson, sister of Sir Thomas Kitson, the father of Katherine
Kitson. Thus, Sir John Spencer's wife was a niece of Lawrence Washington's wife) Sir John and
Katherine (Kitson) Spencer had the following children:
a. John Spencer4, the heir, born 1546, married Mary Catlin in 1566.
b. Thomas Spencer, 2nd Son, married, had one daughter, d. 1620
c. William Spencer, 3rd son, married Margaret Bowyer. Died 1609.

g. Mary Spencer, who married Edward Aston, known as Lady Aston.
h. Katherine Spencer, who married Thomas Leigh, Baronet, of Stonley, Warwickshire,
called Lady Leigh.
i. Elizabeth Spencer, who married 1st to George Carey; 2nd to Baron Hunsdon; and 3rd to
Domino Eueurs.
j. Margaret Spencer, married 1St, (Egid?) Allington of Co. Contab., and married 2 nd to
Edward Allington.
k. Anna Spencer, married P\ William Stanley, 3rd Baron Monteagle, who died in 1635;
married 2nd, Henry Compton; and married 3rd, Robert Sackville, 2nd Baron of Dorset.
4. Sir John Spencer, Knight4, born 1546, married on 31 August 1566 in Bedfordshire to Mary
Catlin, daughter of Sir Robert Catlin, Knight, and died 31 August 159911600. She survived Sir
John by 21 years, and married 2nd to Edward Glasscock of Gray's Inn in 1600, and married 3rd to
Sir Thomas Islington. Sir John4 and Mary Spencer had one son:
Robert Spencer5, the only son, born in 1570.
5. Robert Spencer5 , born 1570, died 25 October 1627, married on 15 February 1587/88 to
Margaret Willoughby, co-heiress of Sir Francis Willoughby ofWollaton, Nottingham. She died in
1597. Their children were as follows:

Robert Spencer was raised to peerage by James I on 21 July 1603, when he became Baron of

where he installed the Wahington family after financial adversity forced them to sell Sulgrave
Manor.
6. William Lord Spencer6, 2nd Baron ofWormleighton, born at Althrop, baptized 4 January
1591192, buried at Brington 27 December 1636 at age 45. He married Lady Penelope
Wriothesley, eldest daughter of Henry Wriothesley, 3rd Earl of Southampton, 1614115. Their
children were:
a. Henry Spencer7, eldest son and heir, baptized 23 November 1620.
b. Robert Spencer, baptized 2 February 1628/29
c. William Spencer, of Ashton Hall, Lancashire, baptized 30 September 1630.

7. Henry Spencer7 , 3rd Baron Spencer, and 1st Earl of Sunderland, baptized 23 November 1620 at
Althorp, killed 20 September 1643 at Battle of Newbury, while fighting for King Charles I. He
married Lady Dorothy Sydney, eldest daughter of Robert, 2 nd Earl of Leicester, on 20 July 1639.
She was born 1617, died 1684, buried at Brington 25 February 1683/84. Henry Spencer7 was
created as Earl of Sunderland by Charles I in June 1643. He was Lord Lieutenant of
Northamptonshire. They had the following children:
a. Robert Spencers, born 1641, eldest and heir.
b. Henry Spencer, called Honorable in some pamphlets, not shown in others. No other
information.
c. Dorothy Spencer, born 1640, died 16 November 1670, age 30., buried at Thornhill,
Yorkshire. In 1656, she married George Seville, Viscount Halifax.
d. Penelope Spencer, born 1643, died as an infant.
(Note that Henry Spencer7 was Earl of Sunderland, not Earl Spencer.)

8 Robert Spencer8, 2nd Earl of Sunderland, born in Paris in 1641, died 28 September 1702, buried
at Brington 7 October 1702. On 10 June 1665 married Anne Digby, daughter of George Digby,
Earl of Bristol. She is also buried at Brington.
Their children were as follows:
a. Robert Spencer, born 1664, died in Paris 5 September 1688, before his father's death.
(There is a conflict between the date of birth in the 1788 pedigree and the date of
marriage shown above.)
b. Charles Spencer, 2nd son and heir, born 1665, succeeded his father as 3rd Earl of
Sunderland.
c. Henry Spencer, died as an infant.
d. Anne Spencer, born 4 June 1666 at Chiswick, Middlesex, became first wife of James,
Duke of Hamilton, died 1690.
e. Elizabeth Spencer, married 30 October 1684 to Donagh McCarthy, Earl of Clancarty.
f Isabella Spencer, died unmarried in 1684.
g. Mary Spencer, died at age 5 according to 1788 pedigree. Tradition by some had this
Mary Spencer married to Gabriel Maupin, the Immigrant to America. It has been
documented that Gabriel Maupin, the Immigrant, married Marie Hersent (Erssen),
another French Huguenot, in Amsterdam in 1691.
9. Charles Spencer, 3rd Earl of Sunderland, born 1675, died 19 April 1722, buried at Brington, 1
May 1722, married pI in 1695 to Lady Arabella Cavendish (1673-1698); married 2 nd in 1699 to
Lady Anne Churchill, daughter and co-heiress of John Churchill, pI Duke of Marlborough (she
died 1716).; married 3rd, Judith Tishbome who died in 1749.
Children:
a. By lSI wife: Frances, only daughter, married Henry Howard, heir of Charles, Earl of
Carlisle, died 27 July 1742.

1. Sir Winston Churchill, born 1620, married Elizabeth Drake of Ashton, Devon, and they had a
son, John Churchill, born 26 May 1650 in Ashe, Devon.
2. John Churchill, born 26 May 1650 in Ashe, Devon, died 16 June 1722 at Windsor. In1678 he
married Sarah Jennings, daughter of Richard Jennings at St. Albans. She was born in 1660 and
died 18 October 1744. John Churchill was the 1st Duke of Marlborough, when it was created in
1702. John and Sarah Churchill had the following children:
a. John, the Marquess of Blanford (1686-1703)
b. Henrietta (1681-1733) married Francis, Earl of Godolphin, and became Duchess of
Marlborough when her father died in 1722.
c. Elizabeth (1687-1714), married Scroop, pt Duke of Bridgewater.
d. Mary (1689-1751), married John, 2nd Duke ofMontagu.
e. Anne (1684-1716), married Charles Spence~, 3rd Earl of Sunderland.
THE SPENCERS AND CHURCHILLS
1. Charles Spence~, 3rd Earl of Sunderland, and Anne Churchill had the Following children:
a. Robert SpencerlO (1701-1729, succeeded his father as 4th Earl of Sunderland in 1722.
b. Charles SpencerlO (1706-1758) succeeded his brother as 5th Earl of Sunderland in 1729,
and succeeded his aunt, Henrietta, as 3rd Duke of Marlborough in 1733.
c. John SpencerlO (1708-1746), known as Honorable John Spencer, born 18 months after
his brother, Charles lO, and died 2 years after his grandmother, Sarah Jennings Churchill.
He married Georgina Carteret.
d. Three other children shown on previous page, not repeated here)
2. Charles SpencerlO, 5th Earl of Sunderland, and 3rd Duke of Marlborough, was born in 1706,
died 1758 and is buried at Blenheim. He married Elizabeth, daughter of Ear! Trevor. They had a
son:
a. George Spencerll, born 1739 and died 1817. He succeeded as 4th Duke of
Marlborough and 6th Earl of Sunderland in 1758. He married Caroline, daughter of the
Duke of Bedford..
3. George Spencerll and Caroline Spencer had a son, George Spencer12, born in 1766, who
became the 5th Duke of Marlborough and 7th Earl of Sunderland in 1817. He married Susan,
daughter of the 7th Earl of Galloway. In 1817, the same year he inherited his titles from his father,
he was authorized to add the name, Churchill, to his surname, thus he became George Spencer
Churchill, extinguishing that Spencer line.

The Churchill line continues to the to the 8th Duke of Marlborough, George Charles Spencer
Churchill (1844-1892), and his brother, Randolph Henry Spencer Churchill (1849-1895), who
married Jennie Jerome, daughter of Leonard Jerome of the United States. Randolph and Jennie
Spencer Churchill were the parents of Sir Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill (1874-1965), better
known to us as Sir Winston Churchill, Prime Minister of England during World Way II.
THE EARLS SPENCER
1. Hon. John SpencerlO, born 13 May 1708, died 19 June 1746. In 1734 he married Lady
Georgina Carteret (1716-1780), 3rd daughter and co-heiress of John Carteret, Earl of Granville.
Sir George Carteret (1610-1680) was one of the eight original Proprietors in the Carolinas. As
late as 1777, the "Earl of Granville Line" was used as a North Carolina border. Hon. John
SpencerlO had no title of nobility. He and Georgina Spencer had the following children:
a. John Spencerll, the only son and heir, born 19 December 1734.
b. Diana Spencer, not in the College of Arms pedigree.
2. John Spencerll born 19 December 1734, died 1783. In 1755 he married Georgiana Poyntz
(1737-1814). On 3 April, 1761, John Spencerll was created Baron Spencer of Althorp and
Viscount Spencer. On 1 November 1765, he was created as 1st Earl Spencer, the first of the
family to hold that title. John and Georgiana Spencer had the following children.
a .. George John Spencer12 ,2nd Earl Spencer, born in 1758.
b. Georgiana Spencer, later Duchess of Devonshire
c. Henrietta Spencer, later Countess of Bessborough.
3. George John Spencer12, 2nd Earl Spencer, born 1758, died 1834. In 1781 he married Lady
Lavinia Bindham, daughter of 1st Earl of Lucan.
4. John Charles Spencer13, 3rd Earl Spencer was born 1782, died 1845, best known as Lord
Althrop. Married Esther Acklom, daughter of Richard Acklom.
5. Frederick Spencer14, 4111 Earl Spencer and Rear Admiral in the Royal Navy, was born in 1798,
died 1857. He married 1st Georgiana Elizabeth Poyntz, and in 1854 he married 2nd to Adelaid
Horatia Elizabeth Seymour, daughter of Sir H.B. Seymour.
6. John Poyntz Spencer15, 5th Earl Spencer, born 1835, died 1910. He was the son of Frederick
Spencer14, 4th Earl Spencer, and nephew of John Charles Spencer13, 3 rd Earl Spencer. He
succeeded to the Earldom in 1857. He married Charlotte Frances Seymour, daughter of Frederick
C. W. Seymour in 1858.
7. Charles Robert Spencer16, 6th Earl Spencer, born 1857, died 1922. He was the only son of the
4th Earl by his 2nd wife. He married Hon. Margaret Baring (1868-1906), daughter of 1st Baron
Revelstroke in 1887. He was also Viscount Altorp.
8. Albert Edward John Spencer17, 7th Earl Spencer, born 1892, died 1975. In 1919 he married
Lady Cynthia Elinor Beatrix Hamilton, daughter of 3rd Duke of Albercom.

9. Edward John Spencer18, 8th Earl Spencer, born in 1924, died 29 March 1992 in London. He
married 1st to Hon. Frances Ruth Burke Roche. They divorced and he married 2nd to Raine, the
daughter of Alexander George McCorquodale and novelist Barbara Cartland, well known British
author, and former wife of Gerald Humphrey Legge, Earl of Dartmouth. Children by lSI marriage:
a. Diana Frances Spencer19, born 1 July 1961 at Sandringham, died 31 August 1997 in
Paris, France. She married HRH Prince Charles Phillip Arthur George 20 July1981 at
St.Paul's Cathedral in London. They divorced 28 August 1996.
b. Charles Edward Maurice Spencer19, born 1964, became 9th Earl Spencer in 1992, upon
death of his father.
c. Lady Elizabeth Sarah Spencer19, born 1955, married Neil McCorquodale in 1978.
d. Lady Cynthia Jane Spencer19, born 1957, married Robert, Lord Fellows in 1976.
e. Hon. John Spencer19, born & died 1960.
10. Diana Frances Spencer19, born 1 July 1961 at Sandringham , England, and died 31 August
1997 in an automobile accident in Paris, France. She married HRH Charles Phillip Arthur
George, Prince of Wales on 29 July 1981 at St. Paul's Cathedral in London. They divorced 28
August 1996. They were parents of the following:
a. Prince William Arthur Phillip Louis ofWales20, born 21 June 1982.
b. Prince Henry Chales Albert Davis20, born 15 September 1984.
11 . Charles Edward Maurice Spencer19, 9th Earl Spencer, born 20 May 1964, succeeded his father
as Viscount Althorp and 9th Earl. Married Victoria Lockwood in 1989, divorced in 1997. Their
children are:
a. Kitty Eleanor Spencero, born 1990
b. Eliza Victoria Spencero, born 1992
c. Katya Amelia Spencero, born 1992
d. Louis Frederick John Spencero, born 1994.

primarily of correspondence to Lyman P. Spencer from many Spencers from around the country. They are family
