Girl Scout Troop 65042 would like to thank Mrs. Lorys and the rest of the students and staff for helping us finish our journey. Through you, we were able to spread the word about the importance of paper recycling. Thank you to the teachers, who put up the posters we made in your classrooms. It was a very important factor that led us to the completion of this journey. Finally, thank you to the students who will hopefully continue to recycle paper products, as well as bottles and cans. Poetry, speeches and balloon release mark ceremony Feb 23, 2013 | By Puja Vengadasalam The memorial stone for Alize Jefferson at Grant School Grant school in South Plainfield, New Jersey held a memorial on Feb 22, 2013 for Alize Jefferson, sixth grader, who died in her sleep in a tragic house fire along with her grandmother and three other siblings exactly a year before. The twenty minute ceremony held in the garden enclosure was a school only event and moved all attending teachers and students to tears. At the after-school memorial, everybody wore purple. The entire gathering wore purple as it was Alize’s favorite color. Sad music played in the background. Math teacher, Ms. Susan Schocklin, told the gathering about Alize’s sweet and positive nature. “I will always remember Alize Jefferson for the love she shared with me each day that I knew her,” she said. Ms. Schocklin read out a poem titled “Special Angel” for her. It said, “She was here for a short time / like a shooting star… She touched the heart of many/Like only an angel can …” After the poetry reading, Alize’s classmates and friends walked up to her picture to place purple flowers as a mark of their love and respect. At the end of the memorial, four of Alize’s friends and Ms. Schocklin cut the strings of five purple balloons representing the five victims and released them into the sky. When I asked Ms. Shocklin about the meaning of the memorial, she said ”We held it to celebrate Alize Jefferson’s life and the lives of her family members .“ Grant School principal, Ellen Decker Lorys agreed with me when I told her that it is hard for kids to deal with such incidents. She spoke about how the “school teachers and counselors were around to help kids deal with the reality of Alize’s death when the news broke. I was shocked and sad myself when I heard it. I remember Alize-she was fun and very nice.” I could see that the memorial service was a way for the school to show that they cared. Perhaps that is what made the memorial ceremony so important and moving. It takes heart to be a hero. On March 25 and March 26, 2013 Grant School participated in jump rope for heart to raise money to donate to the American Heart Association. Grant School participates in jump rope for heart in gym class. We are split into groups and we rotate in stations. Each station has something to do with jumping. Participating in this cause is important because the money goes to the American Heart Association which helps children with bad hearts or hearts that don’t work. The students at Grant School were shown a video during health and gym classes. This video shows students how some kids have heart problems. There were prizes given away depending on how much money you raise and donate. In addition to jump rope for heart it was Mr. Panzarella’s first time teaching jump rope for heart. I asked him how he liked it. Mr. Panzarella said, “Since I live a healthy life style I was very excited to take over jump rope for heart. Every student was participating and constantly moving the entire class. The stations were fun, and everybody enjoyed participating.” He said he would want to do it again next year. He also said “I am very excited and look forward to running jump rope for heart for years to come.” I also interviewed some students to see how they felt about jump rope for heart. Justin Jones said, “It was fun jumping. There were lots of stations. I hope we keep on having it. I think everyone enjoyed it. It helped a good cause.” Alexis Curtis said,” I enjoyed it. I would want to do it again next year.” Ian McCoid said, “I enjoyed it. I enjoyed all the stations. I would want to do it again next year.” Olivia Leonardis said “There were multiple activities. I did not like that some people were not participating. Lastly I would want to do it again next year.” Nick Reno said, “My favorite station was the helicopter station. The only thing I think could be improved is better games. I would want to do it again next year though.” Gianna Sacco said, “My favorite part was jumping rope with friends. The only thing that could have been improved is having a longer time to jump. I would want to do it again next year.” Chris Born said, “My favorite station was the pogo station. I liked that station because it helps keep balance. I don’t think anything could have been improved.” Tiana Hooks said, “I personally enjoyed jump for heart. I liked all the stations, and would love to do it again.” Many people enjoyed jump rope for heart. It seems that all students want to do it again next year. I would want to do it again as well. Jump Rope for Heart is a very fun and important educational event in our school and I hope it will continue to happen for Generations to come. Written By: Xiann Guzman About Our City By Puja Vengadasalam Did you know Native Americans used to live in South Plainfield? The names Samptown (Sampton Avenue), Oak Tree Avenue, Woodland Avenue and Maple Avenue come from them. I think the Native Americans came up with good names, don’t you? Did you know that Revolutionary war touched South Plainfield too? According to http://www.southplainfieldnj.com/spnj/, “The British troop led by General Cornwalis crossed Spring Lake to move towards George Washington’s camp in New Market area. This made Washington move to ‘Washington Rock’ so he could see what the British troops were doing”. I was amazed when I found out that all this happened here. There is a history room in the old Roosevelt School building basement where a lot of historical stuff is on display. I saw and learned a lot of interesting things about our town- South Plainfield -there. I saw a pot belly stove. It is big, black and it has a fat belly. They used to fill it with coal and put fire in it. The fire used to keep the railway guards warm in the winter. I thought it was cool. Do you know what else I saw? I saw the dresses men and women in South Plainfield wore in the 1930s, 1940s and so on. They were fancy and colorful. I saw women’s hats and men’s shoes. My favorite items were the women’s hats— I wanted to wear one. The History Center, located at old Roosevelt School “is the headquarters for the society and houses a large collection of photographs, books, memorabilia, antique clothing, maps, oral histories and other items associated with borough history.” The Center is open every Tuesday from 2 to 4 pm. If you visit the center, you can take a journey to the past of South Plainfield too. History is never over- it always continues …. Take Your Child to Work Day By: Saruidara Castillo Take your child to work day is held on the fourth Thursday of April every year. This year it will be on Thursday, April 25th. This program was founded in 1993 by Gloria Steinem and the Ms. Foundation for Women. The goal of this program was to show youngsters the value of staying in school which will enable them to get a good job. Also, it gets kids to start thinking of their future careers. The program was meant only for girls at first since girls had fewer career opportunities. Boys were starting to feel left out so they got a separate day just for boys. After a while, the program made small changes and soon both boys and girls went to work on the same day. I hope you participated in this year’s Take Your Child to Work Day! Source: Wikipedia.com NJASK Testing The NJASK (New Jersey Assessment of Skills and Knowledge) will be taking place from May 6 to May 9. Although it is a big state test and is very important, there is no need to worry. Anything you have to know your teachers have already taught you. If you are afraid you are going to make a mistake, you shouldn’t be! Your teachers and parents know you are only trying to do your best. No mistake you make will cause them to think any less of you. I know taking tests can stress you out, so here are some tips on how to make your testing experience much easier: Get a good night’s sleep. The more awake you are, the easier it is for you to concentrate. Eat a balanced breakfast. A healthy breakfast will give the energy to get through the day. Relax. If you are less stressed and less emotional, the test will be much less nervewracking. By Lynda Farinella We got our results in for the Fun Fitness Day. Mr. Panzarella is a gym teacher but his brother is in a movie. Who knew that a boy born in a small town would become movie star? Jeff Panzarella is part of a movie called The North Star. All of the shouts were in Pennsylvania so they were done near New Jersey. The movie will be in theaters in May 2ND. The movie is about two slaves who escaped from the south and they go north. The slaves get discovered and find themselves in great danger. To find more info, search up The North Star. Ask your parents to find it in a theater near you. Conflicts between North and South Korea North Korea is a threat to both South Korea and the US. North Korea was caught conducting nuclear tests. They are aiming nuclear missiles and weapons at the US. This is an international issue that has disobeyed the U.N. Security Council resolutions, which forbids “the building and testing of longrange ballistic missiles and nuclear weapons.” This is not good for the US and proves to the US and South Korea that North Korea is an urgent threat. South Korea is against North Korea. Therefore relations between North and South Korea are in a bad state. There have been many issues between North and South Korea recently. North Korea’s nuclear testing is affecting more than just itself. According to Google this conflict will not be resolved anytime soon. By: Rishi Bhalodi Super Bowl or Puppy Bowl IX? Animal Planet presented the greatest thing since sliced bread, Puppy Bowl IX? Animal Planet and Petfinder.com combined to form the best and only canine showdown on Earth. The Puppy Bowl was held on Feb. 3rd, also known as Super Bowl Sunday. The main purpose of this event was to find homes for talented puppies. These athletic puppies even had their own cheerleaders. These cheerleaders were hedgehogs. They competed to earn the title MVP or most valuable puppy. Puppy Bowl was just a fuzzy and cute little version of the Super Bowl. It even had its own halftime show. The magical kitty gymnastic show left people speechless. 63 puppy breeds participated last year. They came from a various amount of shelters and animal rescue organizations. Luckily you can watch both the Puppy Bowl and the Super Bowl. The Puppy Bowl was on all day. So after you’re done watching the Super Bowl you can watch the Puppy Bowl. Puppy Bowl IX, watch it now! By Rishi Bhalodi & Biren Patel Source: Timeforkid.com Reviving Extinct Species Scientists are planning to revive animals that have been declared extinct. Using genetic engineering, they are considering resurrection to help conservation of species. The National Geographic Museum held a de-extinction event. Speakers recommended that the woolly mammoth, dodo, mastodon, saber-toothed cat, etc. would be good animals to revive. Reviving extinct species may also be a danger to humans. The revived species could create chaos for species that are existing because of the changed ecosystem. Scientist Kent Redford recommends that other scientists use bio domes (self-contained mini ecosystems) to see how the revived species would act around today’s species. I think that it would be a nice idea to revive species. How would you feel if you went for a walk in a forest and ran into a woolly mammoth? Wouldn’t it be a sight to see? They removed the extra weight of the truck first. Then, they changed the engine so that it would run on hydrogen. When coffee chaff pallets are heated in a charcoal fire, they create hydrogen. The coffee chaff pallets are what is left after someone makes coffee. The truck drove 65.5 mph which is a record from cars running on gas from organic waste. It was inducted to the Guinness Book of World Records. By Keith Lehman On April 3rd it was officially the 40th anniversary of calling on cell phones. The first cell phone was created by Motorola. It was called the DynaTAC 8000X. The DynaTAC 8000X weighed 2 ½ pounds and was a foot tall. It was also nicknamed “The Brick”. Motorola and AT&T’s Bell Labs where competing to make the first cell phone, so the first cell phone call was from the owner of Motorola to the owner of AT&T’s Bell Labs to tell him that Motorola had won the competition. So now, when you use your cell phone, remember that Motorola made the first one. By Robby Ginda and Tyson Nguyen Have you ever wondered what the fastest car on the face of the earth is? Well the fastest car is the HENNESSEY VENOM GT SPYDER! Are you surprised that it is faster car than the Bugatti Veyron. On January 23, 2013, the Venom proved itself. The Venom GT goes up to 286 mph beating the Bugatti Veyron, formerly the fastest car, at 267 mph. This car also beat out the Konigsegg to earn this title. Another fact is that the price tag on this amazing car is 1.4 million dollars. This is cheaper than the Bugatti Veyron by 1 million dollars. In 2007, Road & Track magazine invited the Hennessey to a shootout to see which car can accelerate to 200 mph in the fastest time. After several runs, at the end of the day, the Venom was crowned king. What do you think? Will someone build a faster car? Source: Top Speed. It took place on February 24, 2013 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, California. The host was Seth McFarlane, and it was his first time hosting. Have you ever noticed that teachers get personal days off? Well, students work just as hard as teachers. Maybe, even harder! We, the students have the right to also have personal days. Teachers get 4 days, so the kids should have an additional day. We should get a total of 5. These personal days shouldn’t count on our attendance record. Also any make-up work should be due the next Monday. Although many students would like to, if you decided to take a personal day on a day when you are scheduled to have a test/ quiz it will then go on your attendance record. If you are sick, but you don’t want that to count on your attendance, you can always count it as one of your personal days. This will make personal days fair! The nominees for Best Picture were Argo, Amour, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Django Unchained, Les Miserables, Life of Pi, Lincoln, Silver Linings Playbook, and Zero Dark Thirty. The Best Picture Award went to Argo. The winner for Best Actor was Daniel Day Lewis for his role as Abraham Lincoln in the film Lincoln. The Best Director was Ang Lee, director of Life of Pi. The Best Actress Award went to Jennifer Lawrence for her role as Tiffany Maxwell in Silver Linings Playbook. The best supporting actor was Christopher Waltz for his role as Dr. King Schultz in Django Unchained. The best supporting actress was Anne Hathaway for her role as Fantine in Les Miserables. Life of Pi won the most awards with 4. You should watch these movies that won the awards because I can tell that they will be great and worth watching! From the title it doesn’t look worth it to watch (in my opinion). But it isn’t as bad as I originally thought. The show is about an extended family that doesn’t get along very well. So, to help them bond, their father adopts a rescue dog named Stan. Stan not only talks, but blogs, (hence the title, Dog with a Blog.) During each episode, Stan narrates the show while typing it on his blog. His blog is meant for other animals (who I am assuming, also talk). I rate this show 2 out of 5 stars because the plot is dumb and the acting isn’t great; the actors don’t look like they are having fun with the show. Mostly the parents, though. I don’t really recommend it to anyone. By Rebecca Lopez Web of Steel Are you a spider man fan? Well here’s a cool fact about the web in the hit series Marvel Universe on Disney X-D and the Spiderman movies. The web is even harder than steel. In the movies, Spiderman uses his web to battle crime; the web is made of spider silk which gives Spiderman his super human strength. Biologist Randy Lewis discusses how the silk gets its strength and power. People who work at the place use real life spiders, so that they can figure out what silk is stronger. When you watch the video you can actually look at the spiders and the process of making Spiderman’s web. At the movies you can see when Spiderman swings with his web, the silk in the web holds him for strength. In the series, the web that he uses is made by Randy Lewis and his crew. If you want to see for yourself watch the series which is on TV right now. You can also watch the video here at: http://www.timeforkids.com/photosvideo/video/web-steel-79631 Welcome to Oz On March 8th, the new Disney movie, Oz, the Great and Powerful premiered in theaters. In the movie a circus magician gets sucked into a tornado while on a hot-air balloon and is transported to the Land of Oz. He meets three witches: Glinda the good, Theodora who was unsure but turned wicked, and Evanora the wicked. He meets many friends and foes along the way. At the end he uses illusion to defeat the wicked sisters. He then becomes the wizard of oz. The movie did great in theatres. It made $356.3 million worldwide. The movie was rated #1 movie in the world for a short time and was one of Disney’s most successful movies in the 2010’s. I really want to see it. Maybe you will. By Chase Atkinson A New Addition to Ace Attorney Get ready to step into the courtroom and witness a trial that is 20 times more epic than a real trial. Capcom released the original Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney on 2001. It is playable on the DS, GBA, and also is an app for iPhones, iPads etc. It follows the storyline of Phoenix Wright, a defense attorney, who has to prove his guilty-looking clients innocent (of murder). You must investigate the crime scene and collect evidence to use in the cross examination. There are many characters including Maya Fey, Phoenix’s “assistant” and Miles Edgeworth, the Prosecutor who was friends with Phoenix Wright as a child. Capcom is working on a new Ace Attorney game for the US. They already released a new game in Japan in January 2013. There are not many facts on when it will be released in the US and the title is still unknown. It will be for the 3DS so it will be in 3D. I found out that there will be a time bomb in the courtroom and it will explode into ruins. There are many mysteries surrounding this game and we will not found out until the game comes out. What are you waiting for? Go buy all the previous games and see what darkness surrounds some of these cheerful, outgoing witnesses. By Colin Farrell Source: www.google.com LEGO Lord of the Rings By Bryan Raber Lego Lord of the Rings is a videogame for Nintendo 3DS, DS, PlayStation Vita, Microsoft Windows, Wii, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. The game was developed by Traveler’s Tales (TT).It was published by Warner Bros, Interactive Entertainment, Feral Interactive and, Feral Interactive (Mac OS X). It is a fantasy video game much like the other LOTR (Lord of the Rings) game, Aragorn’s Quest. It has all three books and features all 80 characters, such as The Fellowship, Sauron, and others. The new game has many new features added to it. The minifigures will talk in clips, and is the only game with talking minifigures that takes quotes from the movie. It also has the feature open world, which allows a blacksmith to make you weapons and fast travel which allows you to travel short distances without the walk. You can also travel faster with the in game red bricks and blacksmith, which allows you to buy cars and other vehicles. In the game there are 18 levels, plus a bonus level upon completion. There are 6 levels in each of the three movies. You get to the next level by following the “ghost studs” in a path until you reach a clear, blue arrow. After you finish the two levels “The Black Gates” and “Mount Doom”, you will open up at Minas Tirith. You will still see the “ghost studs”. The “ghost studs” lead you to Rivendell. The studs will lead you to a cave. In the cave there is a light green level flag with a pile of studs on it. The flag is the only bonus level in the game. It is called “Middle-Earth”. You need to collect 1,000,000 studs to complete the level. If you complete the level you get the 1,000,000 studs you collected, and the two characters Sauron and Mouth of Sauron. After finishing the level you can exit at any time and keep the money you collected. This is what I would call a “stud buffet”, because you can keep going back for more. The game is fun filled with action around every corner and sometimes great rewards. The game is filled with hidden zones filled with treasure for upgrades or more foes hidden. The three girls were playing a detective game. They were thinking of a catch phrase for the group of detectives. Their agent names were Agent Secret, Agent Nature, and Agent Speedy. They were ready to take action and show people their slogan. Slam at that instant our brothers closed and lock the door so they couldn’t hear our slogan. We waited and waited for them to open the door. We even tried bribing them. Nothing worked! Finally, they gave up. As they started to leave, all the lights went out and a there was a strike of lighting. All of a sudden the girls felt weird but powerful. Agent Speedy decided to go downstairs to tell her parents but she couldn’t control her feet. She ran all the way to Rome and back. They then realized that we have gotten super powers. Agent Secret was super-fast, Agent Nature had earth powers, and Agent Secret had mind reading and invisibility powers. They took having super powers very seriously. They defeated the joker, helped out superman, and many more heroic things. That’s when they had the worst call. “Agent Secret, Agent Nature, Agent Speedy super woman has just joined the dark side, you need to go and defeat her and cat woman.” “Remember they are now working together,” said their boss. All of their jaws were down to the floor in shock. None of them knew how to defeat them, but together they would figure it out. Nothing would stop them! They ran to the jet plane, hoped in, and flew to Washington Monument were the two girls were located. They were frightened, but they got out. They walked towards them, climbed the Monument and screamed” We are KAJ, ready to take you down.” They looked at us with surprise. The bombs exploded as the racers reached the finish line. Many citizens were terrorized. The explosion wounded over 100 people including an eight year old. These bombs were deadlier than many other bombs and exploded with greater force due to the bombs being put into pressure cookers. The pressure cookers caused an increase in the explosion radius and also shot out scrap metal. Right after the explosions the FBI responded and started to look through video footage of the area during the marathon. Their search found two mysterious men reacting to the bomb explosions without fear; unlike the other citizens who were screaming. This lead jumpstarted the investigation and put the FBI, federal agents and President Obama ion the right track to solving the case. On Wednesday morning at 1:00 a.m. there was a deadly shootout between the police and the bombers involving over 200 rounds of ammunition. During the shootout, an M.I.T. police officer was killed. Tamerlan Tsarnaev , 26, one of the bombers, was also killed. During the shootout, the other bomber, Dzhokar Tsarnaev, 19, Tamerlan’s younger brother escaped and threw explosives out the th, window. On Thursday, April 20 the President promised the citizens of Boston that the other criminal would be brought to justice by April 22. The city of Boston was shut down; from airports to train stations and residents of the Boston were to stay inside at all times and were only to answer to the police and SWAT team. Soon after, the other bomber was found hiding on a parked boat in a drive way. He suffered injuries from the previous shootout and was shot in the neck. Now, Dzhokhar is facing charges and being questioned by the government. Sources: www.abc.com, nbc news, and cbs news By Tyson Nguyen and Robby Ginda.
