Hey! I’m new in town
Let’s have
less talk!
And more

Guys Like You
You talk way too much,
now bend over!
Some people do not identify themselves
as being gay, but have sex with men.
Prevention is for everyone - despite one’s
sexual orientation.

Hi. I’m Niko. You look
lost. Are you new to
the gay village?
Hey Paco - this is Carlos,
he’s the new boy in town.
Yes, I just moved here,
but I’m not gay.
I’m new here, but

So Niko, how’s your
case going?
It’s tough being
an immigrant.
Yeah. I don’t have
a job and I live in
a little room.
It’s awful! I’m so stressed
out. I’m really worried
about it. I don’t know
what’s going to happen.
Guys Like You
I’ve been feeling sick
lately. I should go to see
a doctor. I used to inject
steroids and drugs, but not
anymore. Now I am into
fitness and taking care of
my body.

Do you have a condom?
Hey papi! You look
lonely. Do you want to
come to my place?
I do feel so lonely...
I don’t know if I
should.
Who uses condoms?
They make me lose my
hard-on.

No. If we don’t have
condoms I don’t want
to do it.

In 2006 there were
an estimated 15,656
gay or bisexual men
infected with HIV in
Ontario. This accounts
for about 60 per
cent of all the people
infected.
In 2006 there were
888 new infections

representing 49% of

high risk for HIV and other STI’s.
Note: Unprotected vaginal or anal
sex is a risk for Hep C if there is
blood involved.
ON CHURCH STREET...
There is that Latin
guy, I’ll invite him to
my “special party”.
I have fucked sometimes without
protection. Last time I checked I was
negative, he told me he was negative
too. I should be more careful.

happen, (increasing his risk for

HIV is a virus that attacks your immune system and is
transmitted by:
• Blood
• Semen (including pre-cum)
• Vaginal fluids
• Mucous inside of an anus or vagina
(anal or vaginal mucosal lining)
Most people in Canada have become infected with HIV by
unprotected sex and sharing syringes.
27
28
But I usually have protected
sex, what exactly is Hep C?
For more information go to page 22 and 23 or visit the website www.guyslikeyou.ca
I have good news and bad news, your HIV test
is negative, but your other blood test shows
that you have been exposed to Hep C. (HCV*)

Guys Like You
*HCV is a virus that attacks your liver and is transmitted by:
• Blood
• Mucous that lines the inside of your nose (nasal mucosal lining)
Most people in Canada have become infected with HCV by
sharing syringes, some by unprotected sex and some by
sharing straws for snorting drugs.

We need to talk. There’s

CARLOS ON CHURCH ST.
Maybe I should just accept that I’m
gay. I like men and I’m sure I am not
a deviant. People in my country don’t
have so much sexual freedom. I’m free
here and have rights. I should get more
information.
Hey listen! The doctor said that to pass on
Hep C blood has to be involved. I didn’t
notice any when we had sex... but I would
get checked out if I was you.
I’ll kill you if you
gave me something!
If you have Hepatitis C
always use a latex condom
during vaginal, anal or oral
sex. There is no vaccine for
Hepatitis C. Vaccines for
Hepatitis A and B do not
provide immunity against
Hepatitis C.

For more information, visit CATIE’s hepatitis C website
Hepatitis C and HIV, What you need to know:
www.hepCinfo.ca
The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and the hepatitis C
virus (HCV) are both carried in the blood. Some risk factors are
common to both HIV and hepatitis C; for instance, sharing drugusing equipment such as needles, cookers, cotton, and crack
cocaine. If you are concerned that you may have been exposed
by sharing syringes, needles or other equipment, talk to your
health care provider or your local needle exchange program
about testing for hepatitis C as well as HIV.
How hepatitis C can harm you:
Without treatment, over 80 percent of hepatitis C infections
progress to chronic hepatitis C, a disease that interacts with your
immune system in a way that may put your liver at risk for
developing scars, preventing your liver from carrying out its job.
After 10 to 20 years, chronic hepatitis C can cause cirrhosis. After
20 to 40 years it can cause liver cancer.
How HIV can harm you:
HIV attacks the body’s immune system, your defense against
infection and disease, and weakens it over time. A person who
has HIV gradually loses the protection of his or her immune
system and begins to experience health problems. The amount
of time that it takes HIV to begin to affect a person’s health
varies widely from one individual to another. When a person is
diagnosed with one of the serious illnesses or cancers which are
“AIDS-defining,” the person is then said to have AIDS.
In comparison to the list above, fewer people have become
infected with Hep C in the following ways:
• Unprotected sexual activity that involves contact with blood
or exchange of blood
• Sharing straws, bills or other utensils used for snorting
cocaine or other drugs (scientists have also proven that
sharing the mucosal membranes, the moist liquids that
cover the nose, can also transmit hepatitis C)
• Sharing razors, toothbrushes, tweezers, manicure or
pedicure equipment (such as nail clippers)
How to protect yourself from Hepatitis C
infection:
• Consider getting vaccinated for Hepatitis A and B, this
however does not protect you from Hepatitis C
• Do not share needles or drug-using equipment
• Do not share personal items such as razors, toothbrushes,
tweezers, manicure or pedicure equipment
• Wear protective gloves if you are likely to be in contact
with someone else’s blood
• Avoid blood-to-blood contact during sexual activity
If you are getting a tattoo or piercing,
make sure that:
(a) the service you choose is regulated or
inspected
(b) the needle is single-use disposable and has never
been used (if you’re getting acupuncture, make sure the
needles are sterile)
(c) all other equipment is sterile
How you could become infected with Hepatitis C:
You are at high risk of hepatitis C infection if you share blood in
the following ways:
• Sharing used needles or syringes (for steroid, prescription,
hormone, cosmetic or street drug use)
• Sharing other drug-using equipment such as cookers,
cotton and crack cocaine (even if you only shared them
once or briefly)
• Sticking yourself with a needle accidentally
• Tattooing, piercing or acupuncture with equipment that
may have been improperly sterilized (or sharing ink for
Tattooing)
Testing for Hepatitis C:
If you believe you may have been exposed to the hepatitis C
virus, ask your health care provider to test you. If the results
show that you have been exposed to the hepatitis C virus, your
health care provider will order a second type of test to confirm
if you are infected. If you are infected, talk to your health care
provider about treatment options.
22
Guys Like You
If you are already living with HIV:
Your risks for getting hepatitis C increase. Fisting or
fingering between multiple partners without new gloves
places you at significant risk. It is not safe to share sex
toys or dilators. Always use a new condom before a penis
goes inside of you.
How you could become infected with HIV:
You are at high risk of contracting HIV if infected blood,
semen (including pre-cum), vaginal fluids (including
menstrual fluids), rectal fluids or breast milk reach the
HIV-susceptible cells in the blood, usually through a break
in the skin, absorption through mucosal membranes
(mucosa) or through some disruption to the mucosa.
(Mucosa are the moist surfaces of the body which line
most of the body cavities and hollow internal organs such
as the vagina, rectum, mouth, urethra, nose and eyelids.)
You are at high risk for contracting HIV in the following
ways:
• Unprotected (without a condom) anal or vaginal sex
• Sharing sex toys or dilators (dildos, vibrators or
butt plugs) – that have not been cleaned each time
someone uses them – although cleaning does not
prevent HIV transmission.
• Not using a new condom between partners
• Sharing used needles or syringes (for steroid,
prescription, hormone, cosmetic or street drug use)
• Sharing other drug-using equipment such as cookers,
cotton and crack cocaine (even if you only shared
them once or briefly)
In comparison to the list above, fewer people have become
infected with HIV in the following ways:
• Performing oral sex (giving a man a ‘blow job’ or
‘going down’ on a woman)
• Receiving penetrative anal or vaginal sex while
wearing a condom, and the condom breaks
How to protect yourself from HIV infection:
• Regular check-ups for sexually transmitted infections
(STIs) (When a person has an STI like syphilis,
gonorrhea, warts, or herpes, his or her risk for
getting HIV increases a great deal.)
• Do not share needles or drug-using equipment
• Wear protective gloves if you are likely to be in
contact with someone else’s blood
• Avoid blood-to-blood contact during sexual activity
Other ways to protect yourself and others
from Hepatitis C and HIV
• HIV and HCV can be transmitted from mother to
child during pregnancy, labour or delivery. Various
procedures can reduce the chances of the child being
infected with HIVor Hepatitis C. Being pregnant and
having both HIV and Hep C, significantly increases
the chance of passing the infections on to your
unborn child.
• If you have had sexual reassignment surgery (SRS)
make sure you are completely healed up before
having sex.
• In the past, some people were infected with HIV
and/or HCV through blood transfusions and blood
products. Since 1985 all donated blood in Canada
is tested for HIV and since 1992 all donated blood is
tested for HCV.
Common symptoms of hepatitis C and HIV:
It is important to get tested for both viruses based on your
activities, not based on your possible symptoms or your
identity. To get an accurate test result for HIV or Hepatitis
C you have to wait 3 months from the time you think you
were possibly exposed, before getting tested.
Both hepatitis C and HIV progress slowly, with many people
experiencing no symptoms at all for many years after
being infected.
If you do have symptoms for Hepatitis C, they could
include jaundice (your skin or eyes turn yellow) and/or
itching in different parts of your body.
In the case of HIV, some people experience a brief, flu-lilke
“seroconversion illness” at the time when antibodies to HIV
are being created.
• Wear a condom for giving or receiving anal or
vaginal sex

Guys Like You
GUYS LIKE YOU is by far
the most interesting and challenging project that I have
been involved with my professional life. It is interesting
because it is an opportunity to use a popular educational
tool to empower people, providing information and work
on issues related to HIV/Hepatitis C prevention, and
challenging due to the complexity of portraying many
social issues in just one story.
GUYS LIKE YOU was not born in the isolation of an office,
or in a library, nor is it the product of literature reviews.
GUYS LIKE YOU is the product of hundreds of stories that
as community educator I have heard on the streets, in
focus groups, through the “Mano en Mano” project, in
interviews and in informal conversations in public places,
with my co-workers, teammates, classmates, professors
and clients at the HIV Prevention Program of the CSSP*.
I think the power of this fotonovela, are the diversity of
people that got involved: reading, critiquing, helping,
consulting, acting, liking and disliking it, etc. GUYS
LIKE YOU brought the community together regardless
of differences: from community members to front line
workers, NGO’s to scholars, media and advocators,
People Living with HIV/AIDS and immigrants. This proved
to me that “we are just one big community”, we know
our issues, we know what we need, and we take care of
one another.
The goal of this fotonovela is to raise awareness
within the community, to bring to the table serious
topics, the ones sometimes we talk about, and the
ones we think about but are rarely discussed. I hope
you enjoy this effort — and I want to invite you to
visit the website and give your feedback. About what
you loved or what you didn’t like about it. And please
talk about it. Talk to your friends, neighbours,
co-workers, lovers, sex partners,
ex-boyfriends, anybody and everybody.

I’m glad there are so many
places to get help in Toronto.
I guess being positive isn’t
the end of the world for me.
Prevention is important even
if you are HIV positive, to
avoid reinfection with HIV or
becoming co-infected with
hepatitis C, also to avoid
infecting others.
My self esteem is definitely
getting better. I have a job,
a place to live and I don’t
have to live in an abusive
relationship anymore.

PACO LEAVES

I’m so glad I’m getting more
information about Hep C.
I’m being responsible. Now
I want to volunteer helping
people understand about
Hepatitis C and shared
common approaches to
preventing HIV infection.
People should know better
about these things... And I
should stop talking like a
medical pamphlet.

CARLOS HAPPILY
THINKS...
It’s been a big change
getting used to life in
Toronto. I’m really
lucky I met such great
people – my friends
Niko and Paco.
But...There is always a new
guy, a new face arriving in
the Village…
He’s the love of my life!
The disasters of my past
are behind me now. I
have a second chance to
start all over again. I
see a bright future ahead
for us!
THE END - ?
