Hungry Valley SVRA
Gorman, CA
More info:
GormanRally.com
The longest running stage rally in California, the Gorman Ridge Rally offers some excellent spectating, but we
operate with limited manpower and a small budget. The cliff-side nature of most of our rally roads and limited
access to some stages makes safe spectating challenging. For these reasons, we provide only a single
spectator area inside the Hungry Valley State Vehicular Recreation Area (SVRA) on the “Maxey” Stage, which
is located approximately 3.8 miles south of the main entrance to the park, just off Gold Hill Road. (This is known
as the Maxey Ranch/Meadows Trail/Old Cottonwood Trail area of the park). Please see the map.
Spectators may view the stage course from several vantage points, including several hill-side locations and a
clearing near the course finish line. Some of the higher vantage points (accessible via a 5-10 min hike up
moderately hilly terrain) provide views of the entire 4 mile loop course, which includes fast straightaways,
technical hill sections, and several jumps.
Opportunities to meet drivers and observe the crews working on the race cars are also available during the day
at the Service Area, located at the Honey Valley Group Camp. Spectator areas are family-friendly and
organized by safety marshals. Your safety is our number one priority.

Service
Service Area (Honey
Valley Group Camp)
Service is open to the public. Crews will work
on the cars, sometimes making major repairs
in a short time. There is some overlap in the
schedule with cars still racing on stage.
This two-hour service provides an opportunity
to see the cars being worked on and the
possibility to interact with the teams.
* The Maxey Spectator Area and the Service Area are approximately 1.6 miles apart.
WHAT TO EXPECT
RACING: Rally cars operate on a closed course, but race “against the clock” – there is no door-to-door action.
Cars leave the starting line one minute intervals, so several cars may be on different sections of the course at
the same time.
WEAR: Comfortable shoes (hiking shoes are suggested) and cool clothing. Sun protection is highly
recommended.
BRING: A comfortable chair, shade, and plenty of nonalcoholic liquid
refreshments. Binoculars are also recommended, as it is possible to see the far
side of this stage.
DIRT: You will be walking on and spectating from ATV trails. There will be dust
– those who choose to spectate near the stage road will literally taste some of
the action!
FEES
Spectating at the event is free but there is a small fee charged ($5/vehicle) by
the State Park to enter Hungry Valley SVRA.
WAIVERS
All spectators entering the spectator area are required to sign the NASA RallySport waiver. Minors must be
accompanied by an adult.
If you do not wish to sign the waiver, you will not be allowed into the spectator area. Waivers will be available at
the entrance to the spectator area at no charge.
PARKING / DIRECTIONS
The parking area is accessible to regular street cars, so long as you are comfortable driving on a groomed dirt
road.
Directions to Hungry Valley Spectator Area
From the Host Hotel (Holiday Inn Express, Lebec) travel South on Peace Valley Road 1.86 miles, then turn Right
into the main North Entrance of Hungry Valley SVRA.
1. Enter and pay park admission fee at the kiosk.
2. Travel south on Gold Hill Road approximately 4.5 miles. (Gold Hill Road is paved).
3. Just past the Lower Scrub Oak Campground, turn Right and head west on Maxey Road. (Maxey Road
is dirt).
Please keep speeds on Maxey Road low (under 15mph) and BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR
MOTORCYCLES AND ATVs. Several trails converge on this area and non rally-related traffic
(other park patrons) may not be paying attention to you. Sometimes, younger children on quads
pop out from the bushes.
4. Travel for approximately ¼ mile, where you will reach an Event Marshall who will direct you to park in
one of the wide areas just off the road.
You will be traveling on the same road the rally cars will be using for transit. Do not be surprised
by the competitors, but it is important that you please DO NOT BLOCK OR IMPEDE the rally
cars so that they can continue on to the special stage. This section of Maxey Road is NOT
TIMED and only used for TRANSITS. The rally cars will OBEY ALL SPEED LIMITS.
5. After parking your car, walk up the road to an Event Marshall, who will direct you to one of several
vantage points that make up the spectator area (this may be up to ¼ mile).
This area is near the start and finish of Stages 2, 4, 6, and 8. Follow the directions of all Safety Marshals. If you
enter via the stage road, walk off the road to a safe viewing location and do not stand within 50 feet of the road
unless you are up a hillside from the road. This is the only place in the rally where spectators will be allowed to
enter a stage!!
IMPORTANT NOTICE
All other stages of this rally are OFF LIMITS TO SPECTATORS! You will not be allowed to walk into the stage
from these areas. If you fail to follow the instructions of the Safety Marshals, the Park Rangers will be called on
the radio to come and remove you. Spectators in unauthorized areas will result in the cancellation of the stage.
SERVICE AREA
Spectators who have signed a waiver are welcome in the centralized Service Area, located at the Honey Valley
Group Campground on Gold Hill Road, approximately midway (2 miles) between the Maxey Stage and the park
entrance. This area presents opportunities to meet competition crews and see the vehicles up close and
personal. This is also where scoring will be located.
TOILET FACILITIES
Vault toilet facilities (no running water) are available in the Service Area, numerous campgrounds, and at the
parking lot adjacent to the entrance of the park. These facilities are handicap-accessible.
