Mechanical applications
V & M TUBES covers the full spectrum of
mechanical engineering applications, from crane
construction to axle manufacture, including
hydraulic cylinders etc. Our broad size range and
the numerous steel grades we developed allow
you to find within our overall product portfolio
the tube best able to meet your technical requirements and optimize your costs.
Cranes
Design engineers are always facing new challenges in terms of maximum lifting capacity, lifting height and reach. Over the past decades,
intelligent design solutions and new advanced
steel grades have enabled them to continuously
optimize performance. Our FineXcell® series of
high-strength fine-grain steels offers an optimum
combination of high yield strength, excellent
impact toughness and good weldability.
FineXcell® grades are often the key to success
for impressive new crane performance levels.
Hydraulic cylinders
Hydraulic cylinders are found on almost all types
of equipment, and are as diverse as their applications. However, reducing the weight of the
cylinder, or allowing for further loads is almost
invariably a challenge. When the hydraulic cylinders are mounted on mobile equipment, each
kilogram saved permits greater mobility, load
bearing or lifting capacity. Grades with higher
strengths and good impact energy values are
typically used: our Forterior® series and
FineXcell® series are the best answers for those
challenges. The wide range of dimensions we
supply helps our customers to minimize
machining.
4
Oil and gas field accessories
Oil & gas wells also require a wide range of
mechanical engineering parts, such as downhole
equipment, wellheads, and a vast range of accessories. High pressures and sour environment are
tough conditions for equipment that has to be
absolutely reliable. V & M TUBES provides a
wide range of grades for those applications: our
Avadur® series accepts the challenge, with good
mechanical properties and hardenability, along
with 13Cr grades for corrosion-resistant applications.
Armatures and piling
And much more!
Our tubes are also used in piling and anchoring
applications. Our dedicated product line,
Tecnipile® comprises a selection of grades and
dimensions suitable for any type of foundation.
Mechanical engineering applications cover a
much wider range than the few examples mentioned so far! Our product series are used in
roller production, for paper, textile or printing
industries, in axles for truck trailers, tractors and
wagons …
Forterior® and FineXcell® grades are typically
favoured in the design of components for construction equipments, such as hydraulics, steering
and structural components, where they demonstrate excellent yield strength levels along with
good toughness.
Spirafort®, with its excellent machinability,
combined with the broad range of MECAPLUS®
dimensions, ensures very low material loss
during machining: the tubes are a close match
to your clean-turned size, and they are easy and
quick to machine!
In all cases, the main characteristics of our product families, with V & M TUBES high-quality
brands, make the difference for our customers!
The specific advantages of each product family,
along with the most useful technical information
are described in the following pages. If you have
any questions regarding materials selection,
please don't hesitate to contact our technicial
support team.

Engineering grades
Forterior®: higher strength for higher performance
Within the product family of engineering
grades, the Forterior® series is the first step
above standard material. Compared to basic
grades, it demonstrates higher yield strength and
good impact test values. With Forterior® you
can reduce the weight of the structure during
design, without diminishing their performance in
the same operating conditions. This means less
material to purchase, but above all lighter structures for easy transportation, or an enhancement of
performance with the same total structure weight.
Such grades are typically favoured in the design
of highly stressed heavy-wall hydraulic cylinders,
and provide excellent strength properties, along
with good toughness, with impact test values
guaranteed up to –40 °C, depending on the grade.

MECAPLUS®: the most advanced
hollow bar offering
This hollow bar offering is of course fully compliant with the requirements of the EN 10294-1,
but our approach goes much further. Taking
advantage of the extreme dimensional flexibility
of our mills, we are now offering MECAPLUS®
dimensions in a gapless size range: any outside
diameter from 30 to 375 mm can now be guaranteed as clean-turned size, in increments of just
1 mm.
With our gapless MECAPLUS® dimensions
our tube is always as close as possible to your
finished dimension, so that your material loss is
reduc-ed to the minimum. When machining from
a solid bar, often up to 40–50 % of the material
purchased is turned into scrap. By selecting the
appropriate MECAPLUS® size, you can reduce
this scrap to only 10 % of the material purchased.
Nominal OD in mm (= max. achievable CTS for OD)
With MECAPLUS® dimensions, we guarantee
that, with a given tube, you can achieve the
required dimension of your final piece, without
any black spot on its surface. Additionally, tight
tolerances and excellent straightness ensure that
you have to remove as little material as possible
during machining operations. MECAPLUS® is
exclusively supplied in our Spirafort® grades, a
perfect combination for machining.

VMec® grade series for the
American market
This engineering grade family has been developed with the VMec® series specially designed for
our American customers. This family fills the
yield strength gap between 40 ksi (Grade C) and
80 ksi (Grade 4140 Q&T) with steel grades at 50,
60 and 70 ksi. VMec®50 is fully consistent with
Grade B/C of ASTM A 106 and ASME SA 106
but features higher yield strength and additional
impact toughness with a restricted chemical composition for better weldability. This approach,
better than standard, is a premium solution for
Mechanicals. VMec®60, at the 60 ksi strength
level, is available in different variants: with improved machinability, low temperature toughness
or a combination of both. These steels are generally weldable by all current manual and automatic methods. The highest grade of the family,
VMec®70, features a yield strength of 70 ksi and
low temperature toughness.

Avadur® series: heat-treated
steels for the oil & gas industry
The Avadur® series unites high mechanical
properties with good hardenability. It was initially designed for the oil and gas industry, where
strength and impact toughness are required. The
series consists of 3 main chromium-molybdenum
low-alloy steels, at least compliant with 4140.
They can be heat-treated to higher strength, or
tempered back to lower strength levels or into
special hardness ranges. Our Avadur® series is
primarily supplied in a quenched and tempered
condition so that it conforms to the mechanical
properties of API 5CT L80, P110 and Q125
grades.
For corrosive environments, we supply 13 Cr
L80 grades, martensitic stainless steels dedicated
to oil & gas fields containing CO2 and limited
H2S. The grade shows a greatly reduced corrosion rate in comparison to carbon steel in elevated concentrations of CO2. Additionally, Super
13Cr-110 offers enhanced mechanical properties
and even further improved corrosion resistance.
Our typical offer for oil & gas field accessories
is completed by the grade 4130 with its excellent
weldability, which is typically supplied with a
minimum yield strength of 80 ksi or 110 ksi,
conforming to API 5CT, in a selection of
dimensions.

FineXcell®
Top of the range for extreme performance
The FineXcell® series comprises V & M TUBES
proprietary grades for fine-grain steels.
FineXcell® grades offer the perfect balance
between high strength, excellent toughness
and resistance to brittle fracture, and excellent
suit-ability for welding. It has the perfect blend
of properties for the design of demanding costeffective steel structures.
Unrivalled strength levels
Our series displays yield strengths up to an
impressive 1000 MPa: the development of this
grade series has opened up new fields in structure design, and has, for instance, enabled crane
manufacturers to achieve ever higher lifting
capacities.
Additionally, there is a strong interest in reducing
the dead weight of the structures without any
loss of load-bearing capacity. It is a question of
satisfying this demand for lightweight construction while simultaneously improving the safety
of highly stressed structures. This can easily be
achieved with our FineXcell® series, where the
use of a higher-strength tube allows you to

reduce the wall thickness and thus the weight of
the tubular structure. With the same working
conditions, using FineXcell® 890 instead of
simple S275 reduces weight by up to 70 % in the
design of the structure. Wall thicknesses are then
thinner, and thus easier to process.
Outstanding toughness at very
low temperatures
However fine-grain steels do not only offer high
strength. Their key characteristic is their
outstanding toughness as well as their excellentresistance to brittle fracture. While most of the
FineXcell® grades offer excellent impact test
values at –40 °C, some were developed to withstand impact tests at temperatures as low as
–60 °C. FineXcell® grades are then the preferred
choice for low-temperature applications, with
Charpy values unrivalled by any other grade
family. Additionally, the material’s excellent
impact energy values ensure superior weldability,
thanks to improved resistance to internal stresses.

Weldability
Being used for mechanical applications, our
FineXcell® tubes of course need to be welded to
other tubes or other components. Their excellent
weldability is made possible by high quality prematerial with very low impurities and a stable
production process resulting in a homogeneous
microstructure. To ensure the good weldability of
commonly quenched and tempered high-strength
FineXcell® grades, relatively low carbon equivalents are adjusted. Depending on strength level
