An Affinity for Sport
A Community of Friends
Whether you are looking for a championship golf course, state of the art racquet facilities, a
family friendly pool environment or a place to socialize and meet new friends, Whitford Country
Club has something for everyone. Known as a club of distinction for more than 55 years,
Whitford provides an exceptional recreational and social environment for the whole family.
Our 18-hole golf course is a premier property in the Philadelphia region. In 2013 Whitford
Country Club was honored to host a US Open qualifying round as well as a PA State Open
qualifying round. Always in pristine condition, the course offers both recreation and challenge
for players of all skill levels. Having one of the strongest junior golf programs in the area, even
the youngest players can enjoy the game of golf.
Our racquets facilities include paddle and tennis courts for both the beginner and advanced level
player to enjoy year round. Our junior tennis program continues to be one of the best in the area
with over 200 children participating each year. Construction of a new paddle court and racquet
center began in the Fall of 2014 and is scheduled to be completed by Spring 2015.
The Whitford Pool is a destination for all of our members in the summer. With the new pool
house completed in May, 2014, our members are enjoying expanded amenities including a full
service dining facility. The Whitford Waves swim team offers our younger members a program
designed to promote skills training and camaraderie. This year, the Waves finished the season
with an undefeated record to become the 2014 Chester County Champions.
With renovations to the clubhouse completed in June, 2014, it is the preferred destination for
casual and fine dining by our members. Our culinary team consistently provides the highest
quality of menu offerings, whether you want a casual dinner in our new 80-seat Mulligans
restaurant, a relaxing night on the patio with friends, or a special night out for fine dining with a
stellar wine selection.
Membership offers you all of this and so much more. Become a member and learn what it
means to be a part of the Whitford Experience.

Whitford Country Club History
In 1955, an idea born in the mind of a gentleman named
Al Ostheimer, led to a gathering of sixty people in John
Young’s barn, once located across from the Club on Rt.
30, to discuss dedicating 168 acres of land for the sole
purpose of sharing the sporting experience with neighbors
in the community. The land, purchased from Wycoff
Smith for $500 per acre, included a farmhouse and a barn,
both of which eventually became Clubhouses. From this
meeting came an elected Board of Governors, May 1955.
Before Golf ever became a reality, fox hunting was the main sport on the property where they
held the annual ‘Whiteland Hunt’. The Club’s name came from the nearby ‘Whitford Village’,
named after a town in Wales. The first nine holes were played in 1956 with the second nine holes
opening in 1957. The official opening of the facility, including the golf course, swimming pool
and tennis courts, occurred on Memorial Day in 1957.
Well-known Architect, William Gordon, a pioneer in the achievement of perfected finish
surfaces on greens, tees and fairways, recognized by great architects who consulted with Gordon
to improve the functional and aesthetic designs of their courses, designed Whitford Country
Club’s course, a true test of championship play. Nestled in the heart of Chester County,
Whitford Country Club continues to provide golfers at all levels with some of the most
prestigious holes in the area.
Whitford’s course will challenge the most
accomplished golfers while still offering the
younger family members the opportunity to learn,
engage and improve their skill level through the
Junior Golf programs, while enjoying and sharing
their recreational time with family and
friends. Eight tennis courts and three paddle tennis
courts provide the racquet sport enthusiast with the
finest of facilities. The regulation sized swimming
pool, renovated and reconstructed in 1998, offers locker room facilities, wading pool, diving well
and snack bar.
1995 brought a major renovation to the Clubhouse entrance, Banquet Room, Bar, and the Garden
Room was completed. 1996 brought the newest and broadest vision ever for our Club with longterm progress and development for the golf course and all Club facilities. Spring of 2001
completed the new Clubhouse office suite, adding both space and aesthetic charm to the
Clubhouse. The long-range plan will continue to guide future leaders of the Whitford Country
Club in a common direction well into the twenty-first century.
A full program of recreational and social
activities is available eleven months of the
year. Men’s
and
Women’s
golf
tournaments, inter-club matches, inter-club
swimming meets and tennis events are
arranged by the various Club committees
and our professional staff. The members
share particular pride in the Junior
programs in golf, tennis and swimming.
From the initial stages of Whitford Country
Club’s development, through many years of
growth and expansion, with the long-range
plan, now fully underway, the Club continues
to exhibit a successful futuristic vision through
and with its’ membership and involvement
with the various Club action committees.

August, 2013
Whitford Country Club
Golf Course Tour
Hole 1
Par 4 - 358 yds
A friendly opening hole that doglegs left guarded by
fairway bunkers at the bend. A 3-wood or long iron to
a wide fairway leaves a short iron to a well bunkered
green.
Be aggressive…this is the only birdie
opportunity in the opening stretch.
Hole 2
Par 3 - 189 yds
The longest and toughest par 3 on the course
playing close to 200 yards into prevailing winds
to a slightly elevated green. Play for the opening
unless you can nestle a long iron or fairway wood
over the deep bunker and stop it on a firm green.
Two putts is solid work on this undulating green.
Hole 3
Par 4 - 402 yds
Slightly downhill and often downwind, this straight
forward two-shoter can provide a birdie opportunity for
the long hitter. Beware of the fairway bunker left and the
hardwoods lining the fairway. A back pin position
requires an aggressive approach to avoid a three putt from
the front of the green….but long is not the spot to recover
from.
Hole 4
Par 5 - 562 yds
The best par 5 on the course…and possibly the toughest in
Chester County! OB left, trees right, and gnarly rough all the
way to the green makes a solid tee shot essential. An uphill
second over the crossing road leaves anything from a long iron
to a wedge…but work is just beginning! The elevated green is
guarded by a stream in front that circles the left side, a
yawning bunker left, and severe mounding to the right. The
green slopes back to front with a ridge running down the middle causing many balls to spin off
the front fringe toward the stream. A par here is to be applauded!
Hole 5
Par 3 - 118 yds
This short 3 will give up plenty of birdies with a precise short
iron. The mound in the center of the green can lead to 3-putt
bogies. Missing the green almost guarantees a bogie or more with
OB left and a hazard just off the right fringe.
Hole 6
Par 4 - 378 yds
A short 4 that requires a tee shot in the fairway. Avoid the
trees left and stream right that also crosses in front of the green
and you have a short iron to a difficult green. Once again,
missing the green anywhere but short makes recovery very
difficult.
Hole 7
Par 4 - 370 yds
A challenging 4 with water to account for off the tee as well as
approaching the green. A pond guards the right 2/3rds of the
fairway at 240 yards forcing the longer hitters to leave their
driver in the bag. The green slopes toward the pond on the left
and is guarded by a deep bunker right. A back pin position
demands an aggressive 2nd shot…or risk a 3-putt from the front
of the sloping green.
Hole 8
Par 4 - 386 yds
A demanding uphill dogleg that puts a premium on the tee
shot. Trees left leave you very little chance to reach the
green while bunker and mounding right pose similar
problems. The mid-iron second from the fairway leaves a
difficult first putt regardless of pin position. Fortunately
the green is large as getting up-and-down from anywhere is
a challenge.
Hole 9
Par 5 - 487 yds
This short, down hill 5 offers a classic risk /
reward opportunity. A solid drive in the fairway
provides an opportunity to reach in two and putt
for eagle….if you avoid OB left and a large pond
right.
A relatively flat green offers birdie
opportunities even for those who choose to lay up.
Hole 10
Par 4 - 357 yds
A relatively short dogleg left continues the string of
‘scoring holes’. A well-placed tee shot avoiding the large
fairway bunker left and tree lined rough right will yield a
short iron approach to a hump-backed green. A front pin
position offers another birdie chance and gets you off to a
good start on the homeward nine
Hole 11
Par 4 - 336 yds
The third in a string of four scoring holes, the 11th offers a
solid birdie opportunity if you place your tee shot in the
tree-lined fairway. A short approach to a relatively flat
green sets up a run at another birdie if you keep your
approach below the hole.
Hole 12
Par 5 - 486 yds
Another short dogleg par 5 completes the string of birdie
holes. Although a straight tee shot is required to set up a lay
up, the key to the hole is your approach and finesse on the
severely sloping green. Any score from 4 to 8 is possible
from the fairway with wedge in your hands!
Hole 13
Par 3 - 146 yds
This challenging 3 plays longer than it measures and offers
no easy recovery if you fail to hit the green. It plays uphill
and into the wind with deep bunkers surrounding the entire
green. A putt from above the hole can easily lead to
another 3-putt green.
Hole 14
Par 4 - 358 yds
If you successfully negotiate the trees and large bunker,
your tee shot will settle in the left edge of the fairway.
From there you must carry a deep bunker guarding the
shallow green with a short iron that will hold the firm
green. Could be another birdie opportunity if the pin is
front-right.
Hole 15
Par 4 - 394 yds
The best par 4 on the homeward nine. A drive in the sloping
fairway leads to a mid iron…but often from a severe side-hill
lie. The well bunkered green slopes back to front and left to
right calling for another approach shot under the hole.
Hole 16
Par 5 - 517 yds
The least demanding of the 5s offers a birdie opportunity
to those who keep it in play. A drive in the fairway
followed by a strategic lay up will yield a short iron
approach to a large, well bunkered but receptive green.
Once again, stay below the hole and you will be rewarded
with a run at a birdie.
Hole 17
Par 3 - 178 yds
A generous green awaits a solid mid or low iron. Deep
bunkers left and right await errant shots. A front pin
position yields birdie opportunities…but a difficult
recovery from either bunker.
Hole 18
Par 4 - 374 yds
A strategic finishing hole where the key is keeping the tee
shot within the tree-lined fairway. Fairway bunkers are
strategically placed left and right of the rolling fairway,
while deep bunkers guard the green. Recovery from the
left bunker is doubtful and the severely sloping green
makes putting interesting… often leading to bogies in spite
of well struck second shots.
