Association/University of Illinois Press First Book Prize, and will be

to anthropology, cross-cultural perspectives on gender and
sexuality, the anthropology of globalization; race and identity
in Latin America; and African Diaspora and the World. She is

Spelman students in Salvador. Dr. Williams’ love for both teaching and travel and her extensive research in Brazil promise to
enhance your educational experience and make this trip intellectually rewarding.
During this trip, we will have the opportunity to visit artists’
studios. Please note that the order of activities on the itinerary may change due to unexpected opportunities and to allocate time to enjoy these special visits exclusively planned
for members of Spelman College Museum of Fine Art and
for alumnae of Spelman College. This trip will not be complete without time to go shopping and to the beach.

BELO HORIZONTE / OURO PRETO
Arrive this morning in Belo Horizonte in the state of Minas Gerais.
Transfer to Ouro Preto, a baroque
town nestled in the mountains.
Check in to your hotel located in the
historical center of Ouro Preto. After
lunch and rest, embark on an introductory walking tour of this historical city, which dates back to 1701,
was once the richest city in Brazil
and the center of the Brazilian gold
rush. It is now a quiet university
town nestled in the mountains of the

wealth is evident in the well-preserved buildings from the glory days
of the gold rush. Later in the afternoon there is an orientation followed
by a welcome dinner. Luxor Ouro

Day 3 – March 7
INHOTIM CULTURAL INSTITUTE
After breakfast, transfer through a
beautiful landscape to the Center of
Contemporary Art of Inhotim. This modern art museum and botanic garden integrates nature with art. Its nationally and internationally relevant collection of contemporary art has been assembled since
the mid 1980s, focusing on works from the 1960s to the present. The
institute now boasts ten art galleries, spread throughout its park.
Paintings, sculptures, drawings, photographs, videos, and installations, all by renowned Brazilian and international artists, are displayed in both galleries and gardens some of them designed by the
architect Burle Marx. Landscape design was planned in such a way
to surprise the senses, with scenic vistas and enticing corners. The
park and its adjacent nature reserve is home to at least 136 species of
birds. From elephant’s foot to orchids, the botanical collection of the
institute is as much an attraction as the world renowned artwork
viewed at Inhotim.
Luxor Ouro Preto Hotel or Pousada Minas Gerais (B, L, D)
Day 4 – March 8
OURO PRETO / BELO HORIZONTE / RIO DE JANEIRO
Continue with your exploration of Ouro Preto this morning. Along
its cobbled streets and plazas are beautiful whitewashed mansions,
exquisite wrought iron balconies, stained glass windows, and vibrant colors. Inside the many churches, some magnificently
adorned with gold, are sculptures by Brazil’s most renowned period
artist, Aleijadinho, the “Little Cripple”, a mulatto sculptor and architect. Declared by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, Ouro Preto has
the purest examples of Baroque art and architecture in the whole of
Brazil. After lunch, transfer to Belo Horizonte (approx 2 hours) for
an evening flight to Rio de Janeiro. Golden Tulip Hotel (B, L)
Day 5 – March 9
RIO DE JANEIRO
Rio de Janeiro, known as the marvelous city (cidade maravilhosa) is
considered one of the most beautiful cities in the world because of its
amazing geographical location between the large sand beaches and
the lush tropical forest. Founded in the 16th century, many areas of
the city are now being renovated in order to prepare it for the 2014
World Cup and the 2016 Olympic games. (continued next page)
Ouro Preto
Day 6 – March 10
RIO DE JANEIRO
This morning take a jeep tour of the Tijuca Forest, a lush park
in the center of Rio, a remnant of the protected Atlantic Forest.
In the afternoon, ride a cable car to the top of the famed Sugar
Loaf Mountain, offering spectacular views at sunset of the city
and its bays--one of the most beautiful urban settings on earth.
Golden Tulip Hotel (B, L, D)
Ipanema Beach - Rio
Start your exploration of Rio by taking a scenic ride to see the local beaches
(Leblón, Ipanema, Copacabana, Botafogo and Flamengo). Then, tour by bus
downtown Rio de Janiero, with its 19th century architecture, and stop in the
musical and bohemian district of Lapa with its restaurants, music bars and
artist’ studios, including a special visit with the artist Selarón at his gallery.
Continue to the National Museum of Fine Arts. The museum collection has
its origins with the transfer of the Portuguese Court to Brazil in the early
19th century, when King John VI brought along with him part of the Portuguese Royal Collection which stayed in Brazil after the King's return to Europe. Lunch is at Confeitaria Colombo, which opened in 1894 and was the
main meeting point for intellectuals and aristocrats through the early 20th
century. Then, relax as we travel through the lush forest of Corcovado
Mountain to visit the most famous landmark in Brazil--the statue of Christ
the Redeemer. From the top of the mountain enjoy incredible views of the
city of Rio de Janeiro, the Atlantic Ocean, the Lagoon Rodrigo de Freitas, the
Sugar Loaf, the local beaches and the Guanabara Bay. In the evening listen
to popular Brazilian music and enjoy dinner at Rio Scenarium, known as
one of the 10 best musical bars in the world which also features an amazing
collection of art and antiques. Golden Tulip Hotel (B, L, D)
Day 7 – March 11
SALVADOR DA BAHIA
Fly this morning to Salvador, the capital of Bahia, and for over
200 years (until 1763) the capital of Brazil. Here, African and
Brazilian cultures blend making this colonial city “the Soul of
Brazil.” Within Salvador’s city limits are Brazil’s oldest churches, most important colonial architecture, and largest collection
of sacred art. In the afternoon explore the Pelourinho or Old
Town, a UNESCO treasure, boasting the largest and best-preserved complex of colonial architecture in the Americas. See
its great churches with gold-leaf interiors and quaint neighborhoods with twisting cobbled streets. Visit the city landmark
Lacerda Elevator. Golden Tulip Hotel Rio Vermelho (B, D)
Day 8 – March 12
SALVADOR
Continue to explore Salvador and learn about its history, architecture and deep African influence. Visit the excellent AfroBrazilian Museum to see its fine collection of 27 large wood
carved statues of Orixás (African deities), ceremonial art and
clothing collection. This museum offers an opportunity to appreciate the main artistic contributions of African culture to
Brazilian culture. Visit the São Francisco Church, the most ornate church in the Americas, also called the Gold Church.
Built by slaves, this church reflects the wealth of Brazilian oligarchy of the 18th century and the contribution of many artisans to its beauty. In the afternoon stroll through the Mercado
Modelo to admire Bahian handicrafts of silver, leather, wood
and other items. This market offers crafts and clothing from Bahia as
well as from other parts of Brazil. This is a great place to shop and
learn about popular art. Later, visit the Modern Art Museum of Bahia, located in a colonial complex dating from the 18th century overlooking the ocean. Admire works by Carybé and other artists from
Bahia as well as the sculpture garden. Golden Tulip Hotel Rio Vermelho (B,L)
Day 9 – March 13
SALVADOR
Take a ferry boat to cross the Bay of All Saints and arrive one hour
later to Itaparica Island. Itaparica, and island full of history, still conserves the charm of a small and forgotten place. Visit the workshop
of Bel Borba, a sculptor and painter, one of the most famous Brazilian
artists at the moment. Explore Itaparica with time to enjoy the white
sand beach of Ponta de Areia with amazing views of the Bay and the
