On World Mission Sunday, we have the opportunity to be part of the Church’s missionary work in Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Pacific Islands through our prayers and support offered to the Society for the Propagation of the Faith. Tips For a Happy & Safe Halloween To help ensure that Halloween is a fun and exciting time for children, it is good to review a few common sense safety tips: 1. Parents shouldn’t allow their children to eat or sample any candy before it’s checked. Throw away all unwrapped candy, popcorn and caramel apples unless they come from a trusted source. 2. Parents should accompany young children or groups of children when trick-or-treating. 3. Walk with friends and stay together. 4. Stay within your own neighborhood or areas with which you are familiar, and only visit homes with lit porch lights. 5. Children should wear light-colored clothing that’s short enough to prevent tripping. Parents also may want to add reflective tape to the costume. 6. Buy Halloween that feature a flame-resistant or flame-retardant label. 7. Use sidewalks when available and begin trick-or-treating before sunset. 8. Each child should carry a flashlight or glow stick. For more tips, please visit: http://www.cvshealthresources.com/topic/halloween. For particular help, you may call Assistance Ministry at (213) 637-7650 Whittier Life Center Do facts and figures impress you? Well, how about this one? The total number of dead in all the Wars in which America has been involved is 1,178,863. The total dead in the War against the unborn babies are over 50,000,000 and growing every day! Teens in preparation for confirmation are expected to attend most nights. October 24 – No Life Night, Phase 1 & 2 Group Meetings during the week October 31 – Morning Ministry: Twilight Blood Drive & Java 4 Justice Confirmation Both Phase 1 & 2 are now completely underway. If you missed registration deadlines we are sorry, you are still more than welcome to register for youth ministry and be a part of the experience through Mass, LIFE Nights, Food Fast, Retreat, service opportunities, youth day and other youth ministry and parish activities. Phase 1 – Meets in the Parish Hall Monday, 10/18, Parents with Teens (phase 1 only) “Why Confirmation” Monday, 10/25, “I AM: The Existence of God” Phase 2 – Small Group meetings session 3, meet in homes week of 10/25. Blood Drive Pope John Paul II called the donation of blood “an act of concrete solidarity.” During the summer, supply of units of blood in hospitals gets significantly depleted. October is respect LIFE Month. One unit of blood helps save 3 lives. Join St. Linus LIFE TEEN in helping assist the American Red Cross to save lives by donating blood! Plan to give the gift of LIFE on Sunday, October 31, at our Twilight Themed drive between 8:30 AM – 2:30 PM. We especially need Hispanic donors. 7 of 10 Hispanics are universal donors, but only 1 of those 7 ever donate blood. We have an amazing Hispanic community here at St. Linus that could make a huge impact in our community by giving blood. Appointments are scheduled in 15-minute increments. Anyone interested in donating please call the youth room or e-mail, to schedule a time to donate. No sign ups will be available after masses this or next week. Walk-ups will be accepted the day of. Thank you in advance for your support of this very important service for our local community Java for Justice 25,000,000 farmers worldwide make their livelihood growing coffee. Most of these growers farm small plots under 10 acres. The great majority are tribal or indigenous peoples, who do not possess the necessary skills to represent themselves adequately in the global marketplace. On average for every $1.50 cup of coffee that you purchase, the farmer gets less than a penny. Not only that, but it costs the farmer more than a penny to grow the beans for that cup of coffee so they are usually poorer than when they started. Also the morning of October 31, LIFE TEEN will be brewing Fair Trade Coffee after all morning masses for you to enjoy. You will have an opportunity to purchase a pound of this quality, shade grown, chemical free coffee to take home with you and use your morning cup to join in solidarity with the poor. Teens will be available at this time to share more details about the principles of Fair Trade with you. Proceeds from the sale of all Fair Trade coffee at the parish will go toward the purchase and construction of the Respect LIFE memorial. FOOD FAST Mark your calendars for Saturday and Sunday, November 20 & 21. More details next week. 24 DE OCTUBRE DE 2010 TRIGÉSIMO DOMINGO DEL TIEMPO ORDINARIO PAGE NINE Please support St. Linus School Academic Decathlon Team! Place your order today! ‘Thank You” thought: Accepting God’s Will - The Key to a Fuller Life! Christ taught us that accepting God’s will and living in accordance to that will is the key to a fuller life! God is the potter, we are the clay. God keeps on moulding us, shaping and reshaping our brokenness to make us more Christ-like. We need to surrender daily, to allow His Holy Spirit to permeate the clay of our lives so that the fullness of our humanity may be realized. Is there something you think that God wants you to do that you are not doing? Is there something that you are doing to cause you to pull away from Him? Have a THANKFUL week and may God bless you. * With God anything is possible ********************************************************************* St. Linus MSC invites you to nights of prayer. St. Linus MSC Ministry will be meeting the first and third Monday of every month at 7:00pm inside the church. We will gather for fellowship, prayer and to think of ways to minister to those in need in our own community. Please join us Monday November 1st.
