The first quarter of the year is turning out to
have been one of the wettest on record in a long time.
Even though it has been cloudy with heavy rain for
much of this period the club has been busy with
events like barbecues, brunches, bourbon tasting,
Valentine’s Dinner and Opening Day. Our
Deckhands and Entertainment Committee have a
great lineup of events planned for the rest of the year,
too. Coming up are soon are the Newcomer’s Pupu Party on Saturday,
March 8 followed by a Saint Patrick’s Day Party on March 15. Please check
the online calendar at www.kaneoheyachtclub.com
With inclement weather, our maintenance staff has been hard at work
keeping the facilities clean—always a challenge with the heavy rains. As you
use the club facilities, if you notice something that needs repair, please bring
it to my attention. We do have plans to resurface the walkways. Projects like
these fall under the House & Grounds Committee, with items costing over
$5,000 being elevated to Finance & Planning. Between Mike Furukawa
(H&G), Gordon Goldsmith (F&P), Ken Rakta and his maintenance team we
are working to keep your club facilities safe and in good working order.
Our North and South Hoist refurbishment project is going to get
underway shortly. Regular maintenance to the bracing and lifts is planned so
they are ready for our busy season and the upcoming Pacific Cup. Please
note the South Hoist is for 2 tons and under. The North Hoist normally is for
3 tons but currently is limited to only 2 tons.
Pacific Cup’s planning committee is now requesting help to run the
various upcoming activities. Volunteer sheets are on the notice boards and
members are encouraged to join a team and get to know each other. This is
a great way to learn more about what it takes to plan a major yacht race and
plan for the upcoming festivities planned for July.
This year is the 90th anniversary of the founding of the club (October 28,
1924). Dick Perkins and I are pleased to let you know that our committees
will team up to plan a special celebration on Cy Gillette Day to commemorate
this milestone. Among the plans for this event are to begin a series of video
‘Story Board’ interviews beginning with long-time members. We will be
encouraging members to bring in their old photos to be scanned so that we can
have an extensive video presentation during the celebration. More
information will be coming.
I look forward to seeing you at our events and enjoying our many
activities and facilities.
We’re off and sailing into a New Year,
starting with the Commodore’s Reception on
New Year’s Day, Super Bowl Sunday Party,
Boat Blessing, Valentine’s Dinner Party and the
Kaneohe Yacht Club Opening Day; wow, we
have accomplished a lot in the last 60 days and
of course we could not have done it without our
many volunteers.
I would like to extend my sincere heartfelt Mahalo to the many
volunteers, KYC management and staff, and club officers who devote
countless amounts of their time to ensure the smooth operations of our
club.
A big Mahalo to George Nottingham for spearheading the front
parking lot paving project from beginning to end. Thank you Sir, job
will done!
Sorry for the inconvenience last month with the gate cards. We
have been working with PSI our security firm in charge of the gate card
system. The technicians have worked on our system and this has been
resolved.
We are installing a new POS (point of sales) system in the bar and
snack bar computers that will be more compatible to our new software.
This should result in shorter waiting times at the bar and snack bar.
Don’t forget the wine dinner on March 4th, it will be a very nice
event.
Many thanks go out to the Tennis Fleet, every year they invite the
board to their January tennis tournament and this is the second time I
have played with them. I am starting to realize why I am the only one
from the board who shows up….THAT IS A TOUGH SPORT. They
wore me out so bad I went to bed at 1900 hours that night and missed
the awards dinner. It’s not like I'd won a trophy or anything but I did
have a great time chasing that little yellow ball. Thanks again Tennis
Fleet! Next; look out Golf Fleet!
Looking forward to seeing all of you around the club or in the water.
Rear Commodore
Richard Perkins
We are gearing up for another busy year of
sailing at the club. In late April, we will host the
I-14 Pacific Rim Invitational and it is expected to
have 25-30 boats. In early May, KYC will be a
challenger in the Sir Thomas Lipton Cup off
Waikiki. The big event of the year is the Pacific
Cup scheduled for mid-July. Currently there are
over 70 boats registered for this race from San Francisco to Kaneohe. If
you are interested in volunteering for this event, there is a sign-up sheet
on the bulletin board. Kim Ickler is the KYC Pacific Cup Chair and has
put together a great team to cover all aspects of hosting this very
important event. If you have any Pacific Cup questions, please contact
Kim.
Mike Scott has taken over as Regatta Chairman this year from
Andrew Meade after three years as Regatta Chairman. Andrew has
moved on to be Rear Commodore for Sail for both HYRA and Waikiki
Yacht Club. Thanks goes out to Andrew for a great job over the past
three years and we wish him well in his new endeavors. Mike and I are
working with all the Sailing Fleet Captains to complete the Race
Committee schedule for over 60 races this year not including the
Bulkhead Races. If you want to volunteer for Race Committee, please
contact Mike or me. We are also working on having a Race Committee
sign-up sheet on the KYC website.
The Cruising Fleet kicked off their season with a sail or should I say
motor to Hale O’Lono on MLK Day as six boats made the trek across
3
a very flat Molokai Channel with very little wind. Frederic Berg’s, Alize
experienced engine problems at Makapuu and had to return to KYC.
The ClassBoat Race season was also effected by the lack of wind and
the ClassBoat A race was cancelled. It has been determined that this
race will not be re-scheduled.
The Junior Sailing program, headed by Jesse Andrews is off to a
fast start with sailing classes and a HYSA Regatta hosted at the club on
February 1.
Donlei Darnell , after many years of being the Tennis Fleet Captain,
has turned over the reins to Rob Rietow and Jean Fernie. A big
“Mahalo” goes out to Donlei for a great job over the years as Tennis
Fleet Captain. The Tennis Fleet has had two Tournaments and Pot Luck
dinners already and has tournaments and dinners planned for every
month this year.
A committee has been formed (Tom Pochereva, Bill Leary, Jesse
Andrews, Clark Fremgen, and Dick Perkins) to find an off-shore race
committee boat as well as develop a replacement and maintenance plan
for all club boats. This committee has looked at several boats and is still
in a search for an off-shore race committee boat.
There will be a one day US Sailing Club Judge Seminar on March
22, and a two day US Sailing Advanced Judge Seminar starting on
March 23 at the club.
Last but not least, the Haul-Out was a huge success this season as
41 boats were hauled out (including 7 masts) over six haul out
weekends.

Aloha
Aloha all KYC members,
Our regular Thursday Night Bulkhead Races begin anew on Thursday
February 27 at 6 PM. We race every Thursday evening through the last
week of September. Please come join us for anytime. We run four
different classes and welcome all skill levels. Many racers commonly
race without spinnakers so please don’t let that be a roadblock. There are
no entry fees or preregistration. Please just come to the bulkhead before
six on any Thursday and we will be happy to give you a start time
designed to make it fun for all. Also if you would like to learn to crew
please join us as well. Most skippers will be happy to extend an
invitation to sail with them. If you have any questions, please feel free
to call me or just look for me near the flagpole on any Thursday.
Aloha,
Bill Riddle

I will start this month’s article with a
discussion of “THE LISTS”, the waiting
lists for wet and dry slips. When you joined
the Club, you were probably urged to apply
for a slip as soon as possible, without
anyone telling you about the “Active and
Inactive” lists. Persons on the active wet wait list and active dry wait
lists are assumed to be ready to occupy a slip as soon as the Port
Captain notifies you that a slip of the size that you applied for is
available.
The inactive lists are meant to be a place you can place your
name and application date, thereby assuring your place on the lists
in case you want a boat in the future. What is important about being
on the lists is that you now have an application date.
If a slip comes up for a 20-foot boat I will look in chronological
order for a member on the active list with a 20-foot boat. Since you
indicated that you are not ready to accept a slip by joining the
inactive wet or dry lists, I will not call you if a slip does open up.
When you are ready to buy a boat place, merely call the Port Captain
and request that your name be moved to the active wait list. Your
name will be placed in chronological order. Too often applications
have not been up-dated with the owner’s actual boat size or boat
type. I have had to turn members away because the slip I have vacant
will not accommodate their new vessel. I recently called a member
about a slip and discovered that although he had applied for a slip for
a 28-foot boat, his boat was actually a 24-foot boat, and assigning
him that slip would be a waste a slip for a larger boat. Beam also
comes into play when choosing a slip, as some slips could
accommodate a 40-foot boat but with only an 11-foot beam.
I presently have 125 applications for a wet slip, and 116 for a
dry slip. Interestingly, 15 applicants in wet and 8 in dry have not
specified the type or size of boat they have. If you are one of the 23
people with a blank spot by your name, fill in an updated application
or ask for a move to the inactive slip list. By the Marina Regulations,
if I offer you a slip and you turn it down, your name goes to the
inactive list automatically. You will retain the date that you applied.
There is a lot of information in the Marina Regulations, and you
should be aware of them.
Once you are assigned a slip it is yours to use with conditions.
One is that you may not re-assign the slip to your friend for a week
or more. All the slips belong to the Club and shall be assigned by the
Port Captain. The Port Captain, not the assignee, will make
temporary assignments in the absence of an assignee’s boat in that
slip.
A new subject. The DLNR has made schooling and licensing
mandatory for all boat drivers by November 14, 2014, with
exceptions. I still have not heard from the USCG Auxiliary, those
folks who hold the classes periodically, whether they are going to
offer a class to update the earlier awarded certificates or not. They
did upgrade some of their own members at the Club a month or so
ago, but still no word for the rest of us. The nice thing about that
program is that if you had the previous course, and passed, a one-day
upgrade was possible. You can take the full course on-line through
several organizations, BoatUS.org being one of them. I had taken
the USCG at Kalaheo High long ago and the BoatUS online recently.
BoatUS does not offer the upgrade to the older USCG course; you
must take the entire course. The BoatUS course is a good brush-up.
It consists of six lessons, about 90 minutes long each and a final
exam. You can stop the course anytime and return when ready to
where you left off.
Have fun, stay safe, and I’ll see you on the water.

The Pacific Cup, “the Fun Race To Hawaii”, from San Francisco
Bay has been an event since 1980 and coming to Kaneohe since 1988,
every other summer. For lots of information and history on the race,
visit the website at www.pacificcup.org. July will be here before we
know it. KYC, as Finish Line host, needs lots of volunteers to fill our
various committees and make this event come off with the expertise and
Aloha we here at KYC are known for.
The first start in San Francisco Bay will be on July 6. We expect our
first arrivals on or about July 17; after all we do have a 100 foot and a
90 foot entry this year! The action wraps up for our racers on July 25 at
the Awards Party. Most committees work 24/7 during the time period the
boats are arriving. Volunteer scheduling will begin in June and training
will be provided by Committee Chairs as the race draws near.
Committee Descriptions are below.
To sign up: There is a sign-up sheet on KYC's main notice board,
or you may contact the Chair of the committee or committees you'd like
to volunteer for. On the KYC website, after you've logged in, each
Chair's name appears with their email address. If that's not enough we'll
have a table set-up at the Newcomer's Pupu Party staffed to answer your
questions and help you get involved.
Communications Chair Valerie Ossipoff, with assistant Walt
Niemczura, schedules radio operators in the room on the Upper Deck
and will begin communication with the racers long before they reach
the finish line. Watch standers are scheduled 24/7 until all racers are
safely finished.
Staff Duty Officer functions are being chaired by Beau Lani
Barker with Assistant Chair Sandy Ragley- Wood. Their team volunteers
24/7 to receive, record and post racing yacht check-ins, ETAs, and
disseminate information to committees. SDO is also first aboard the
yachts after they are moored to ensure that they are in compliance with
certain racing rules and Hawaii State Ag. Regs., etc. Security functions
fall in here also…SDO keeps it all together!
Finish Line is led again this year by Lynda Jones. Watch standers
are posted at Kansas Tower on MCBH and are scheduled 24/7 to finish
racers, turn them over to escort boats on VHF radio, and record and
report finish times for all racers.
Escort Boats will be chaired by Iwalani Stone. Escort boats are
scheduled to bring racing yachts from the finish line to mooring at KYC
through both the Main Ship Channel and the Sampan Channel at any
time, day or night, til they’re all here. Captains use their own boats and
normally gather their own crew to assist them; however, some volunteer
crew is always needed.
Mooring is Team-Chaired by Ralph Foulger, Ken Schmidt and
Mike Barker, who will be responsible for mooring the finished yachts
at the bulkhead, in a slip, or anchored outside the coral patch. Easier
said than done, this committee will be VERY busy this year, with
seventy entries, including two very long boats and two multihulls!
Members with slips on G-pier may be asked to relocate during the race
period to help accommodate our visiting yachts. Also, anyone leaving
the yacht harbor for any length of time in July is reminded to advise
Port Captain Bob Hurd so he may have the flexibility of moving boats
around to create more useful space for our guests.
Leis & Trays: With lots of aloha, this committee prepares mai-tais
and fresh pineapple and delivers them, along with cold beer, water and
a fresh lei, to all on board the finishing yacht, after they are cleared by
the Staff Duty Officer (SDO). Linnea Brooks and Karla Silva are
co-chairing this fun group and have a fun agenda planned for these
receptions!
Parties and Emcees: Parties? Who said that? Gail Hutchinson and
Cathy Pratt are working on some really great evening experiences for
US and our visitors. They can use some support! They also need nightly
Emcees to introduce events, the day's arrivals, make announcements,
awards door prizes, and etc.
Decorations: We want our special place to be kept beautiful
throughout the week and will need volunteers to bring fresh flowers and
greenery, as well as assist with creating arrangements and maintaining
them during the week. Our very creative Georgia Schmidt leads this
effort, so contact her if you can help.
Information Desk: Our concierge service for the racers and their
family and friends is set up to provide useful information to them while
they’re visiting. Our “Know-It- Alls” are being organized by Becky
Dodini. There will be a helpful App available, now being worked on by
Becky to help them help the racers. Anyone having housing available or
willing to babysit should also contact Becky.
Deckhands During Pacific Cup Week the Deckhands expand their
hours and their operations to sell more logo merchandise to our visitors.
They also need more sales minded, outgoing volunteers. Betty
Birdsong-McDowell will be happy to sign you up.
Boat Lei will be chaired again this year by Rebekah Luke. She has
in the past invited KYC volunteers who want to learn how to make boat
lei to join her. They provide per-ordered boat lei to finishing yachts.
New for 2014: We will be organizing a group of qualified
photographers to take photos at the boat's arrival celebrations and at the
shore side events. All will be posted to the Pacific Cup Website in high
resolution for downloading by the racers, their fans, families, friends
and our race sponsors. For more information about this committee,
please contact Kim Ickler.

Aloha all KYC members and friends,
As you read this the KYC Golf Fleet will probably have just
finished our February Golf scramble; this month at Koolau Golf Course.
Our KYC Golf Fleet is a diverse group of dramatically different skill
levels. We play a Scramble format so the competition is designed to not
be intimidating for anyone. We normally play once a month on various
courses around the island; usually on a Friday about 10 AM. If you
would like to be included in the email list for future events please just
email me at [email protected] with your name, email address and
handicap or skill level. We would love to have you join the fun.

International 14 Fleet
Elise Leroux
The International 14 fleet has started out the year strong, with six boats racing in Classboat Regatta B on February 8
and five boats in Classboat Regatta C on February 23. (Classboat A in January was cancelled for lack of breeze.)
Both days saw light and shifty conditions with the keys to success including consistency, picking shifts, and
transitioning between light and very light breeze. The i14 fleet enjoyed some really close racing.
Classboat B was a shifty day with light breeze about 5 kts out of the west for race 1, shifting progressively right, and
building to 10-12 for race 3. Courses were D-Z (race 1), C-Z (race 2), and B-G (race 3). Congratulations to Tom
Pocehereva and Shelley James for picking the correct shifts and winning the day decisively with three bullets. Ryan
McCrillis and Luca Berg, sailing together for the first time, came second. Third place was hotly contested (see
results below) with only one point separating 3rd and 5th place. Cecilia Jannson and Juju Soto sailed some great races
but unfortunately tore their jib and went in after race 2. The fleet thanks new regatta chair Mike Scott and team for
their Race Committee work.

For Classboat C, the wind was north about 5-8 knots. Courses were BZ, BZ2, and BDZB. The course on Race 3 had
everyone dousing their kites to make the wing mark (D). It’s always fun to see something different. The fleet sends
their mahalos to race committee Kim and Lou Ickler. Tom Pochereva and Brad Cole did a great job of picking
shifts, and won the day by sailing more consistently than anyone else. Father-son duo of Frederic and Luca Berg
sailed a great day and placed 2nd, only one point out of first. Husband-wife team of Andy and Maureen Bates were a
close 3rd.

The University of Hawaii Sailing Team had a successful fall season
and is now looking towards the spring semester. The Rainbow Invite
was the first regatta of the spring hosted by UH at Keehi Lagoon and had
teams from Canada, Japan and California represented. The Rainbow
sailors came out on top and are now getting ready for three regattas in
March. The coed team will sail March 1-2 at Stanford and the women
head for the Polar Vortex of the east coast and the US Naval Academy
March 8-9. They will stay with our good friend Art Silcox who lives
just outside of Annapolis. March 7-9 is the Port of Los Angles Harbor
Cup where the coed team will compete in the Catalina 37s owned by
Long Beach YC. The team has been practicing hard in the Farr 38
“Kiwi Clipper” that was donated to our program by Howard Green.
Big thanks to Howard!! Mahalo to members who hosted teams during
the Rainbow Invite. Marcy Fleming and Bo Wheeler (USC), Cory
LarRieu (University of British Columbia), Tom and Mele Pochereva

Championships at Sand Island and Keehi Lagoon. This regatta will be
a national qualifier including 11 teams from California and the
University of Hawaii. If any of you are interested in hosting a visiting
team please let us know. If you have extra space could house/host a team

Jeff Cruise
Aloha from the Cal 20 Fleet,
It’s the beginning of March, and we’re already three regattas deep
in our season! It’s been a weird two months of weather, with heavy
rains, light winds, and crazy storm systems. Unfortunately for Classboat
A, a lack of wind prevented any racing from taking place. Classboat B,
which took place of February 8, was plagued by consistent rains.
Despite this, three die-hard boat teams managed to tough it out for the
afternoon. Thanks to Ken Kaan (1st), Mick Meierdiercks (2nd), and
Rob O’Connor (3rd) for representing the fleet out there.
Classboat C, which took place on February 23, was our first regatta
of sunny skies and nice breeze. It was a beautiful day out on the bay,
as evidenced by the huge showing at the sandbar. We had a shifty
northerly that kept everyone on their toes. Congrats to Jesse Andrews
and Marc Barra (sailing Luka) on their victory with two
first place finishes and a second place. Finishing one point behind was
the Hochart family sailing Hotel California. In third place, was the
Cruise family on Pilikia.
If you are interested in sailing in the Cal 20 fleet, be sure to contact
me ([email protected]). We always have boats to fill, and would
definitely like to grow the fleet as much as possible.

Tennis Fleet News
Rich Heaton
January saw the changing of the guard for the Tennis Fleet.
Donlei Darnell retired after five years as Fleet Captain.
Because of her tireless service, Donlei was awarded the
John Week Memorial Trophy.
The fleet grew substantially under her regime, both in
numbers and activities, to the extent that the job was more
than one person could handle. Jean Fernie and Rob
Rietow, two able administrators, have relieved Donlei.
The position of Tournament Director has changed hands,
too. Greg Siok has taken over from Rich Heaton, who ran
the fleet tournaments for the past eight years. Greg is well
known because he has taught many of us the finer techniques of tennis in his many KYC
fleet-sponsored classes.
January’s tournament and potluck was held to celebrate the
forthcoming Chinese New Year. Two new players participated in the
tournament, including one who is distinguished as having been the
youngest player to take part in a fleet tournament in many years.
Kasie, petite granddaughter of Tennis Fleet member BJ, is 14 years
old, and plays on the Le Jardin tennis team. Everyone was thrilled to
have her play, and was fascinated with her form and enthusiasm.
That girl is definitely going places in the tennis world!
We also welcomed Sandra Williams, who played as a guest. Sandra actually got the
most points in the tournament but could not be awarded the win, which is reserved for
fleet members. Therefore, Joanne Goebert was awarded the Women’s Trophy for
scoring the next greater number of tournament points. Linnea Brooks was the Women’s
Runner Up.
Harvey Minsky and Bob Babyak were tied for first in the Men’s Division. Neither was
able to be present, so co-captains Jean and Rob asked for surrogates to compete for the
trophy. Simi Gross volunteered to be Harvey and Aaron Phillips stood in for Bob. The
contest was to complete the sentence: “The 2014 Chinese New Year is the year of the
(blank).” Simi answered “Horse” first, and thus won the trophy for Harvey.
The January tournament evening potluck dinner was held in the Longhouse, and
participants contributed their favorite Asian food. Good times and good eats!
