December Newsletter
If online social networking can be
largely responsible for the socalled spring revolutions in the
Middle East and the recent London
riots, then we shouldn’t be
surprised if schools too are
struggling with issues of digital
use, abuse and disrespect which
have risen from text messaging,
facebook and the like. Digital
disrespect is defined as using
digital platforms to make another
person’s life miserable usually
through spreading negative or
embarrassing dirt (true, untrue or
unknown) via text, pic or video.
Things that start out as a funny
wall post, a sarcastic photo
comment, or a random offhand
text can turn hurtful, obnoxious, or
even abusive faster than you can
hit 'reply all.' More and more
teens are using their keys in anger
or without thinking and the results
can be harmful and long lasting.
For young people, there are three
questions which they need to ask
themselves
before
putting
anything on line:
1.
Would it be okay if this was
happening offline? As in would
you walk into a room and say
to the person’s face what you
were going to write on
facebook? If not, then not a
good idea to post it online.
2. Will spreading this information
come back to haunt me?
Assume
that
if
you’re
spreading rumours about a
person online, someone will
kindly return the favour. Call it
digital karma.
3. Isn’t it just harmless fun? 29%
of young people report being
the victims of cyber bullying to
the point of affecting their
wellbeing.
Some ways of protecting one’s
digital domain include:
 Unhide. If you wouldn’t say it
to a person’s face, don’t say it
online or text it
 Disengage. If someone is
talking about you, don’t
respond. Everything you say
just fuels the fire. In this case,
silence is golden.
 Secure your stuff. Find the
privacy settings of all the
networks you are part of, and
use them. They are there for a
reason.
 Save everything. If you are
being harassed online, save the
messages, posts, comments
etc so that you back up
complaints or requests for
blocking
 Use your voice. A site
administrator, parent, teacher,
or other authority figure you
trust can help you deal with
nasty stuff happening online –
but you have to let them know
what is happening.

The line between what's okay and what's not,
what is digital use and digital abuse, gets more
blurry every day. Approximately one third of
online teenage users say they have experienced
some sort of cyber bullying or form of
harassment and it is a thin line between
acceptable and unacceptable behaviour.
Certainly this is challenging for schools when out
of school online behaviour impacts on
relationships within. As parents and teachers,
we need to be increasingly vigilant around this
issue and ensure that our young people know
where the line is. We have certainly appreciated
students and parents who have alerted us to
unacceptable online comments that may impact
at school.
From the Board of Trustees
The Board of Trustees is in the process of signing off
a new Five Year Property Agreement with the
Ministry of Education. It is hoped that by the end of
this year, significant work will have been completed
upgrading both the Gym and Breezeway toilets.
Alterations will be completed in A Block and this will
be followed by an upgrade to the Nelson and
Wharenui blocks.
Following the publication of updated guidelines
from the Ministry, the Board has drafted guidelines
around Conducting Students Searches. Feedback
has been sought from students and we welcome
feedback from parents / caregivers prior to our next
BOT meeting on Thursday 27 October 5:30 pm. The
draft Guidelines for Conducting Student Searches is
available in this newsletter.
It has been a long and busy term as we have
adjusted to the changed term times this year.
While some students have completed NCEA
courses, others need to make good use of the
holidays to both refresh and prepare as there
are only two weeks before external exams begin
after the holidays.
We welcome a new member, Mr Peter Schouten,
who replaced Mrs Jenny Barnett on the Board of
Trustees. Congratulations also to Hamish Balderston
who replaces Reece Gielen as Student
Representative on the Board. A big thank you to
Reece for his work over the last year.

BOT Chair
Signing Out Procedures
The changed term times have impacted on the
school year significantly. Students who have
achieved their NCEA qualification are able to
sign out at the end of term; however they must
have caregiver permission and must have
completed their programmes of learning.
Students must apply to sign out by completing a
Sign Out form which can be picked up from the
Student Centre. If teachers indicate that an
assessment or project still needs to be
completed, then it is expected that this is done
so prior to signing out.
Exams for Years 9 and 10 students
Junior students will sit four exams in English,
Mathematics, Science and Social Studies of 2 hours
each in length in mid November. The purpose of
these exams is to give students feedback on their
year’s learning in these subjects and to prepare
them for sitting exams at senior level. Teachers will
be giving students further information for these
exams. It is not unreasonable to expect students to
do an hour or so of study each night in preparation
from the beginning of next term. We will be helping
students with study and exam techniques as part of
their River group programme. Parents can help by
insisting that your child puts some time aside
several nights each week to study. This may also
involve turning off the television or collecting in the
cell phone or taking the chord from your child’s
computer to lessen distractions.
For students who have not achieved their NCEA
qualification prior to mid November when
students sitting external exams go on study
leave, these students will need to continue at
school until they have completed their
programmes of learning.

Out of Zone Ballot
Co-Curricular Photos
An out of zone ballot will be held on Friday 4
November following an information evening on
Tuesday 1 November at 7 pm in the college hall. If
you have neighbours or friends who are interested,
please let them know about these dates. Thanks
Orders for these photos close on Thursday 6
October and will be sent off at the end of term
3. They should be issued to students early in
term 4. Late orders can be placed directly with
Photolife by contacting them on 0800 501 040
or [email protected]
Parent Forum
Year 10 Interviews
Our next Parent Forum is scheduled for Monday 7
November in the hub. Discussion will focus around
our Health curriculum.
Teacher Only Day
Friday 11 November
This is the second of the Teacher Only Days given by
the Ministry of Education to give schools time to
grapple with changes to NCEA Levels 1 and 2.
Junior Reports
Junior Reports which relate to Term 3 work will be
issued on Tuesday 9 November. While there is no
Parent Report evening following these reports,
parents and caregivers are welcome to contact with
Mr Hallet (Year 9 Dean); Mrs Stilwell (Year 10 Dean)
or Mr Webster (Junior Academic Dean) if there are
any issues relating to these reports which you wish
to discuss.
Final Credit updates for the year will be issued on the
last day of the term (Wed 7 December).
Uniform Change Over
The uniform change over period concludes at the
end of this term with all students required to be in
summer uniform (sandals, no scarves etc) in term 4.
That said, Year 13 students and other students not
returning in 2012 who no longer have sandals may
see Mr Jolly on the first day of term 4 and request a
uniform pass to continue wearing school shoes for
the remainder of the year. Students in incorrect
uniform can expect to be placed in the restricted
area and Year 13s will lose their downtown
privileges.
3
In Term 4, Mr Keith (Careers Advisor), will be
interviewing all Year 10 students about their
subjects for next year and any related career
ideas. If, as a parent / caregiver, you wish to be
present when the interview takes place, please
contact Mr Keith Term 4 Week 1 by phoning the
office (07)867-7029.
Photography 2012
The Art Department is expanding in 2012 by
introducing NCEA Level 2 Photography to its
Year 12 students. Used as a drawing tool, digital
photography is both versatile and instantaneous
in its production. By contrasting processes with
ICT technology, the Visual Arts Department
hopes to engage and reflect young people’s
interest in art and technology. Ms Mawston will
be launching this new venture by entering a
number of students’ photographs into the
Waikato
Photographic
Society
Young
Photographer Awards. The exhibition will be
open to the public from the 12 to the 13
November. For more details go to:

Congratulations
Film Success
Well done to Hamish Balderston, Connor Ingle and Quade Biddle who are finalists in the New Zealand

Information Hub - Amanda Fitzpatrick
The hub is going really well with some fun things happening at lunchtimes, along with the movies, I’ve
also put on some “jigsaw races” which the kids seem to love. Lots of laughs when trying to do a 60-piece
jigsaw under pressure in pairs and 34 kids trying to do 17 puzzles brings a new meaning to the word
crazy! New books have also been flowing onto the shelves much to the delight of students.
The Inter-school chess tournament
went really well and I know our kids
all learnt something, even though we
attracted only two outside schools it
was still a great day which qualified
us to compete in Auckland on the 4th
October. Students competing at this
event are Nathan Broadbent, Taz
Nicholson, Noah Pearce, Jordan
Sinclair and Arran Challis.
Results for the Inter-school chess
tournament can be found on

Horticulture 2012
2012
Level
Horticulture is being added to the
curriculum next year at Hauraki Plains
College for Level 1 students. We will be
focussing on plant production and students
who take this course will be involved in a
variety of practical tasks.
Due to this I have a request for any punnet
trays, plastic containers (e.g. margarine),
old dish brushes, gardening gloves or
anything that you think we could use in the
Horticultural Department. Any items can be
dropped off at the school office and
forwarded to Miriam Courtney would be
much appreciated.
Thank you and be sure to look out for our
gardening updates next year.

2011 Year 10 Camp Initial Information
Sat 12 November to Sunday 20 November
Camp is a valuable part of school life, providing the opportunity for students to develop the "whole"
being in real and challenging situations, and at the same time, developing an understanding,
appreciation and care of the outdoor environment. The Camp is based at Opoutere Beach Resort
Camping Ground. The pupils rotate through various activities in mixed gender groups of fifteen or so.
Activities:
Water-based activities
Sailing, Kayaking, Dinghies, Raft Building, Fishing, Seafood gathering
Other activities
Group and Team Building Activities, Orienteering, Hiking, Conservation, Bird
Watching, Sporting, History of the area
As part of this Camp, students will be planning, providing, and cooking their own food in same sex
tenting groups. Students will be doing the activities in their River Groups. Within their Camp group
students can choose same sex tenting and cooking groups. Minimum size three, maximum size five.
During Camp Week (Sat 12 November to Sunday 20 November) as both camps are over a weekend,
campers are not expected to attend school during their non- camping days.
The River guides will assist and ensure that every member is in a group. We will provide each group of
students with a recommended equipment and food list for camp. A clothing list will be issued in a
booklet when groups are made and it is important that the correct clothing is brought along to camp
as students can get wet and cold very quickly. There are no washing machines or dryers available.
There will be three or four sessions next term where all year 10s will be taken out of normal classes
and into the gym for food and tent organisation. Permission slips will be issued shortly. Cost $120 plus
bring your own food and camping gear eg tents and cookers and pots etc (Organised in your tent
groups)

OPC Time Rolls Round Again: 2012
OPC (Outdoor Pursuits Centre), founded in
1972 by Graeme Dingle with Sir Edmund
Hillary as patron, has had a long association
with Hauraki Plains College. Graeme Dingle
had a vision to create an outdoor education
centre where young New Zealanders would
have the opportunity to learn more about
themselves while adventuring in the
outdoors. Next year we offer two OPC
courses.
The OPC adventure camp at Tongariro is for 5
days and can include activities such as
abseiling, rafting, caving, over-night camp,
tramping, high and low ropes, flying fox and
canoeing, while developing problem solving,
team building and leadership qualities. Each
challenge is by choice. This course is
compulsory for those who wish to take Year
12 PE or Outdoor Ed next year and highly
recommended for all Year 12’s, especially
those who wish to take leadership roles
within the school. Last year the cost to attend
was approx $537.
After a successful introduction last
year we are also offering a Year 13
OPC 5 day program at Great Barrier.
This course is mandatory for Year 13
PEA and Outdoor Ed students. For
both courses, associated Unit
Standard credits are available. Last
year the cost to attend was approx
$652.
Both the Year 12 OPC experience at
Tongariro and the Year 13 OPC
experience on Great Barrier Island
will be during Week 10 (the last
week) of Term 1 next year. So get
organised now!

Careers Advisor
A resilient person is not only able to handle such
experiences in the moment, but also bounce back
afterward:
Career Resilience
What exactly is career resilience? How can it help
us manage the current economic crisis, and what
relevance will it have once the recession has run
its course?
1.
Most people understand resilience to mean the
ability to adapt well to new situations and
adversity.
Develop supportive and caring relationships at
home, among friends and colleagues. Accept
help and support, and help others when they
need it.
2.
How can career resilience help?
Given the present economic climate, a strong dose
of career resilience sounds like good sense. Having
high levels of resilience offers you a way of looking
at the difficulties that present themselves along
your career path.
Remember that some crises are beyond your
control. You can’t change events, but you can
change the way you interpret and react to
them. Try to accept this and look ahead.
3.
Accept that change is part of life and that you
will have to adapt to changing circumstances.
4.
Set some realistic goals and take regular small
steps towards achieving them. Ask yourself,
“What’s the one thing I can accomplish
today?” rather than focusing on the
overarching goal.
5.
Be decisive. Do as much as you can rather than
avoiding problems and hoping they will go
away.
6.
Try to understand your own experiences of
dealing with loss, hardship or emotional
problems. Appreciate what you have learned
from these events.
7.
Develop a positive view about yourself and be
confident in your strengths and abilities.
8.
Try to take a longer term perspective and don’t
blow the significance of the event out of
proportion.
9.
Stay hopeful and optimistic. Visualise what you
want, rather than worrying about what you
fear.
People with resilience understand that no matter
how prepared they are, no matter how much
knowledge they attain or skills they develop, even
the work most ideally suited to them will bring
setbacks from time to time. These people
inherently know that such challenges will foster
innovation, so they greet the challenge with
enthusiasm.
The world is changing and we need to be prepared
to change along with it. Just a generation ago, a
career was viewed as a commitment to a lifelong
occupation.
Now,
old
occupations
are
disappearing, new ones are being invented, and
many jobs have evolved to be considerably
different than they were a few years ago.
Couple this with heightened competition and an
increasingly demanding labour market – hallmarks
of an economic recession – and the need for career
resilience becomes inevitable.
A 10-Step guide to developing resilience
There’s no doubt that resilience is emerging as a
necessary capability, not only in the context of a
person’s career and the present economic climate,
but also as an invaluable tool throughout an
individual’s life.
The American Psychology
Association has studied resilience closely since 9/11
and has published a 10-point guide to developing
individual resilience. This guide is just as easily read
as a blueprint for building career resilience.
10. Look after yourself and your health, keep fit
and take time out for relaxation and peace.
This will give you the strength and balance to
deal with difficult situations.
Adapted from an article by Pete Kerr published in
‘Careers Edge’ by New Zealand Career Services.

New Sports Website www.schoolground.co.nz/haurakiplains
Congratulations must go out to all of the winter sports teams who
recently completed their seasons. It was great to see success in a
wide range of sports and grades - well done.
Many people will be thinking about which summer sport to
participate in. HPC has a variety of sports that students can give a
go. At lunchtimes – Tennis, Volleyball and Bowls will start again
next term along with a junior indoor Cricket competition. Full 11a-side Cricket for both boys and girls will be in full swing come the
start of the term as well as the local touch leagues. There are
plenty of other options available including Athletics, Golf, Cycling,
Triathlon / Multi-Sport, Softball, Equestrian and Rowing. Students
are asked to keep an eye on the sports notice board and pay
attention to daily notices regarding these activities. If any
students want more information about any of these sports or if
they have a sport that they would like to see introduced then
they must catch up with the Sport and Recreation Coordinator.

A Big Thank You to our Volunteers
Referees and Umpires are the unsung heroes of sport. Recently
the Hauraki Plains Thames Valley 7’s Tournament was held at the
Ngatea domain, 50 students from HPC volunteered to
umpire/referee Hockey, Netball, Rugby and Football at this huge
primary school event. Congratulations to these students who did
an outstanding job. The organisers were very pleased and proud
of you all and to state the obvious, could not have been able to
hold this tournament without you. Despite the comments from
the side line, you faced up to the challenge and fulfilled your
requirements – which is no easy feat. Great effort and well
done.
Well done also to Laine Yeager, Mackenzie Saunders, Chelsea
Holden and Deliah Gasson who volunteered to help at the
Hauraki Plains Schools Gymsport Festival. Your help was very
much appreciated.
A big thank you and well done to all students who have
contributed to clubs and teams this winter whether through
umpiring, coaching or managing a team. A fantastic effort which
is always very much appreciated. Good on you!!

Waikato/Bay of Plenty Road Race
Champs
On the 21st Sept 7 keen students represented HPC at
a secondary schools road race event around The
Lakes in Tauranga. A scenic, mostly flat course
around Tauranga’s newest subdivision combined with
wind also saw these students up against some very
fast competitors. Well done to Deliah Gasson,
Charlotte Vanderlee & Sarah Speedy who competed
in the Junior Girls, Adrian Knight in the Junior Boys,
Aidan Summers & Thomas Prescott in the
Intermediate Boys and Joshua Mounsey in the Senior
Boys who also finished in 5th place. Great effort!

with
the World Cup and the Warriors – that game we
would never win. However 75 keen riders signed
on and had a brilliant ride, thanks to Cam and Co
who marked out the track on Saturday. The peat
makes for a fast but safe ride as the peat is soft
hence no jobs for the ambulance team, few
tumbles but those that did got straight back on
their bikes and took off.
Moto X Team
Amanda Fitzpatrick
The Hauraki Plains MotoX team had a day of
hard work with Broxy Friday 16th September.
Even though it was predicted that it would be
raining, the weather was kind to us most of the
day at Broxy’s track in Tauranga. Although we
did have wind, rain, sun and a low
temperature, the riders are always smiling
even if they are sweating! We were very spoilt
to have two maize paddocks to practice in
while Broxy took one group at a time. With 26
riders he certainly had his work cut out for him,
but I always admire him as he can always give
me feedback on each rider and I guess now
that we have done a few trainings with him, he
pushes the kids a bit harder which they seem
to appreciate as they all come away with
something new to try out. It’s nice to have
some new riders coming through from the
local primary schools, Steen Duckworth has
been with us for a couple of seasons, but this
season we have picked up Ben Broad and Rikki
Morritt. All the boys enjoyed the day and I
think are rapt to be part of the HPC team
which now has 28 riders to compete in
December for the school at the HPC Round 2
MotoX Tournament.
Great to see the dads out there with their sons
and daughters riding which makes for a real family
affair. Also nice to see a lot of our MX team riding
and enjoying the day.
Finished and cleaned up in time to see the All
Blacks play or milk the cows - what more could we
ask for when everyone is leaving with a smile on
their face and a big thanks for the day? A donation
of $1000 will go to the Patetonga Motocross Club
to go towards their fundraising for the land. A
huge thanks to our helpers Daniel Pratt, Andrew
Wenham and Le Shaye McDonald for supporting
the HPC MX team.
We have a helmet that we are raffling. If anyone is
interested it’s $5.00 a ticket. Only 100 tickets to
be sold, if interested, contact me at
[email protected] the money
raised is going towards a Pit Tent for the team.
The pink mohawks were tried out on the
helmets and will have to be modified with 3M
tape as some of the suction caps didn’t want to
stick to the helmets, but be assured we will
see the HPC riders on the track and the Breast
Cancer Foundation are very appreciative
of the team supporting them and have
posted their picture on their Facebook
page. The thought behind this concept
was to identify the kids on the track but
also nice to be able to raise the
awareness of breast cancer and what
we can do to help as a team.
Moto X Maize Ride
Not a drop of rain and a huge sigh of
relief when Sunday arrived for the 2nd
Maize ride hosted by the HPC MotoX
team that the rain forecast didn’t
arrive. Alas it certainly must have put
off the riders or we were competing

Football
finally wrapped up on Sunday 18th September with the holding of the HPC Football End
of Year Prize Giving. This was a really successful day and was well attended by players, coaches, managers
and supporters alike. Thank you to those parents who helped out on the day and a huge congratulations to
the players who received awards.
The 2011 season was
1st XI Girls Football
Reviewing the past season it is obvious to see that progress has been made. In 2010 the girls competed in
the Waikato 3rd division with a placement resulting somewhere in the middle to bottom end of the table.
This year the team competed in a much harder division, Waikato 2 nd division and placed second in the
league. It takes hard work, commitment and a great attitude to become successful in what you do. The girls
proved to themselves and their competition that they possess what it takes to be successful through the
repeated victories they had over their opposition. Well done, girls. I am proud of the team and its success
this season. As the coach, who has played at Waikato, Regional and National level, I have enjoyed being
able to communicate and demonstrate my knowledge of the game. Along with the girls commitment, I
would also like to acknowledge those parents who regularly supported the team over the season with a
special thanks to our manager Carrie Cooksley.
Kelly Mawston - Girls 1st Eleven Soccer Coach
2ND XI Girls Football
The team this year was made up of some girls from this team last year, some girls from last year’s
development team and a few girls who had never played football before. They had a great team spirit and
everyone regularly attended trainings as well as games. The team has grown and improved greatly
throughout the season. They had a wonderful season!
In the first round they won 3 games and lost 4, then in the
second round they won every game and came 2nd overall in
the Girls Thames Valley Football Round. They also had the
opportunity to attend the Mercury Bay Girls Football
Tournament and they played some very tough teams. They
won 1 game and lost 3, coming 5th overall in the
Tournament.
The girls and their coach Lance Trow have really enjoyed
the season and look forward to next year’s season!!!

GUIDELINES FOR CONDUCTING STUDENT SEARCHES
RATIONALE:
Hauraki Plains College is committed to providing a safe environment by actively discouraging
the presence of dangerous, illegal or items prohibited under the Hauraki Way. (NAG 5)
PURPOSE:
To provide guidelines and procedures for searching students property and persons
GUIDELINES:
1.
If a student has, or is believed to have, an item in his or her possession which
poses a potential or direct threat to their own and others’ safety, it is open to the
school to conduct a search to confiscate that item.
2.
The object of a search may be a dangerous or illegal item such as a weapon or drugs;
stolen items or items prohibited under the Hauraki Way. A search may also involve
searching a student’s correspondence including written and electronic material such as
a diary, mobile phone or laptop.
3.
Before conducting a search, there must first be reasonable grounds to suspect
that the student has in his or her possession an item which poses an immediate or
direct threat of harm. No search can be carried out based simply on suspicion or a
‘drag net’ approach, but be based on specific information relating to the student(s)
concerned.
4.
Searches should endeavour to protect the dignity and privacy of the student.
5.
There must be two staff members present during the search; one of which must be a
member of the Senior Management Team and preferably a Dean. Where appropriate
the staff conducting the search will be of the same gender as the student.
PROCEDURES:
1.
The person conducting the search must first explain to the student the object of the
search and why it is believed that the student is in possession of the item.
2.
The school will endeavour to contact the caregiver of the student prior to the search
taking place; if this is not possible then the caregiver must be contacted as soon as
possible after the search.
3.
The student will be requested to comply with the search in the first instance such as an
instruction to empty out pockets, open bag or remove outer layer of clothing only.
4.
If the student is uncooperative, the caregiver or police may be called and the student
kept under close supervision. Failure to co-operate with a search may be dealt with as
a disciplinary matter.
5.
If it is not possible to conduct the search safely or if the object of the search is
highly dangerous, the Police are to be called. Force should never be used except in
an emergency.
6.
These guidelines are to be used in conjunction with other BOT policies and in
particular Procedures for Removal of Pupils’ Property for Safe Keeping.
REVIEW:
This policy will be reviewed according to the Board of Trustees triennial
programme of self review (2013)
