Brent Teaching School Alliance Primary NQT Professional Development 2015/16 Including details of Brent Council’s Appropriate Body Service Support for Newly Qualified Teachers in Brent Brent primary schools with NQTs starting from September 2015 now have a number of professional development and Appropriate Body options available to them. This brochure outlines the professional development programme offered by the Brent Teaching School Alliance (BTSA) and the buying options available to Brent schools, including a discounted offer if the professional development programme is bought alongside Brent Council’s Appropriate Body Service. The Brent Teaching School Alliance (BTSA) is a cross phase strategic partnership group. Byron Court is the lead school for the Brent Teaching School Alliance with 9 Strategic partners: the Institute of Education, Claremont HS Academy, Oliver Goldsmith Primary School, Sudbury Primary School, Mount Stewart Junior School, Uxendon Manor Primary School, Wembley Learning Zone, the Gateway Teaching School Alliance and the Brent Schools Partnership (BSP). In addition to our Strategic Partners we have a further 4 Associate members: Torah Temimah Primary, Preston Park Primary, Wykeham Primary and Preston Manor Secondary School. Our mission is to ensure that through collaboration, innovation, engagement and excellence that standards of teaching and learning are raised, resulting in improved pupil progress and attainment for every pupil in Brent and beyond (www.btsa.london) Professional Development for NQTs Brent Council: From September 2015 the local authority offer will no longer provide professional development for NQTs. However, schools buying into Brent Council’s Appropriate Body Service will be provided with a ‘Welcome to Brent’ course for NQTs and training for NQT tutors and mentors. Brent Teaching School Alliance: BTSA has put in place an extensive professional development programme for primary NQTs, building on outstanding practice across the teaching school alliance. Schools have the option of purchasing the full programme or opt to ‘pay as you go’. Schools using Brent Council’s Appropriate Body Service will receive a discount if also purchasing BTSA’s professional development programme – see options below. Woodfield Teaching School Alliance: From September 2015, WTSA will be providing a number of professional development courses for NQTs. Details of these courses and how schools can access WTSA courses can be found on BestBrent. Buying Options and Costs Schools can access a discounted offer if they buy the BTSA professional development programme in conjunction with Brent Council’s Appropriate Body Service. Brent Council’s – Appropriate Body Service In addition to providing a professional and coordinated 'Appropriate Body' service that supports the induction of NQTs covering the 3 term induction process, schools buying into Brent Councils Appropriate Body Service will be provided with a ‘Welcome to Brent’ course for NQTs and training for NQT tutors and mentors. These sessions are not part of BTSAs NQT CPD programme. Schools who do not buy into Brent Council’s Appropriate Body Service can purchase places on a pay as you go basis. In addition to the sessions organised for the autumn term, NQTs starting in the spring and summer terms and NQT Tutors/Mentors will also be offered Appropriate Body Service training if buying in to this service. Full details of the support provided as part of the Appropriate Body Service can be found at www.bestbrent.co.uk NQT’s Welcome to Brent Tuesday 8th September 2015 09:00 - 12:30, Brent Civic Centre Cost £75 (Free to subscribers to the 2015-16 NQT Appropriate Body Service) This conference which will take place in Brent's iconic Civic Centre, is an opportunity for our NQTs to gain a better understanding of the induction process, to receive information on the services and support available to them and to meet newly qualified teachers in other Brent schools and settings. The conference will be delivered in two parts. During the first half, NQTs will be welcomed by the head of the School Effectiveness Service (formerly the School Improvement Service) and will be introduced to members of Brent’s SEND and Behaviour Management teams, the Brent Music Service and Teaching Schools offering curriculum training specifically aimed at NQTs. The second half will be delivered by the LA’s induction coordinator and will focus on the statutory regulations for induction, its requirements and expectations. She will also explain Brent's induction procedures (including registering on our NQT Manager website) and the roles and responsibilities of all involved in the process. NQTs will receive the Brent Induction folder containing guidance booklets, record keeping documentation, forms, templates and exemplars. The teachers unions will be represented at this conference. NQTs will be given the opportunity to be meet the representatives throughout the morning. A sandwich lunch will be provided. Objectives: To ensure all NQTs understand the requirements of induction. To provide new NQTs with information about the support provided by Brent's Services to Schools team. To equip NQTs with the information they need to enable them to contribute to their induction. It is also for anyone who has not accessed training in the last three years. Support and guidance from a designated tutor/mentor who holds QTS, has been appropriately trained and has the time and experience to carry out the role effectively, is a statutory requirement for the induction of Newly Qualified Teachers. This course will ensure NQTs have a greater understanding of the roles and responsibilities in supporting children with SEND and how to understand a statement or EHC (Education, Health and Care) plan. Veronica Glenn What makes an inclusive classroom? What are the important features of an inclusive learning environment? How to use an inclusive learning environment to support teaching. This course will help NQTs to understand what we mean by an inclusive environment. They will be exposed to ways to allow children access to all aspects of the curriculum. Veronica Glenn Consider how to plan for the needs of all children. Look at ways to differentiate resources and activities. This course will look at ways to plan for the needs of all children in the class. NQTs will be asked to bring along plans to differentiate in a practical session. During this course NQTs will be introduced to a vast range of AfL strategies and will be encouraged to consider their appropriateness in different learning situations. They will be provided with examples of good marking and feedback, with the aim to increase their skills and confidence to identify appropriate and challenging next steps in learning. This course will enable NQTs to understand and use key pedagogies in reading in order to promote a more engaging reading culture within their classroom and develop reading comprehension skills. They will get an overview of the six phonic phases and activity ideas for each; progressing from simple sounds through to the most complex.
