Breeder
Edward P. Evans ... Born: Jan. 31, 1942 in Pittsburgh; Died Dec. 31,
2010 at Mount Sinai Hospital in Manhattan. The cause of death was
acute myeloid leukemia. ... Education: Graduated from Yale University
and Harvard Business School.
Quick facts about Edward P. Evans:
• Among the more than 100 stakes winners bred at Spring Hill Farm by
Evans was champion Saint Liam, winner of the Breedersʼ Cup Classic
and Horse of the Year honors in 2005 ... Saint Liam was his only
Breedersʼ Cup winner from 12 starters as a breeder and nine as an
owner.
• Dirt Mile contender Code West was among the last horses bred by
Edward Evans before his death. He and his dam, Charitabledonation,
were both sold at the 2011 Keeneland November sale as part of a
disperal of Evansʼ Thoroughbred holdings. Code West, by Lemon Drop
Kid and a full brother to graded stakes winner Charitable Man, brought
$340,000. Charitabledonation sold for $110,000.
• In his final two years, enjoyed some of his greatest success in racing
with Quality Road and A Little Warm. In 2010, Quality Road won three
Grade 1 races – the Donn Handicap, Met Mile and Woodward Stakes
... He had been one of the favorites for the 2009 Kentucky Derby until
a quarter crack prevented him from running in any of the Triple Crown
races ... Quality Road won the ʼ09 Florida Derby in track-record time
and the Fountain of Youth before the injury, then returned in August to
take the 6-1/2-furlong Amsterdam at Saratoga, again setting a track
record in the process ... A Little Warm won the 2010 Jim Dandy Stakes
(G1) at Saratoga. He came out of a second place finish in the
Pennsylvania Derby (G2) with an injury that is likely to force his
retirement.
• Evans campaigned many stakes winners, including Gygistar, winner of
the 2002 Riva Ridge, Dwyer and Kingʼs Bishop and two runnings of
the Westchester Handicap in 2004 and 2005 and Personal Ensign
winner Summer Colony ... Other stakes-winning horses he has bred
and raced include Tap Day, Misty Galore, Gold Mover, Dismasted,
Catʼs At Home, Christmas Kid, Raging Fever, With Ability, Possible
Mate and Minstrella ... Presented with the Ogden Phipps Award as the
outstanding breeder by the New York Turf Writers Association in 2002.
The award was shared with the Phipps family ... Leading owner at the
2001, 2002 and 2004 Aqueduct spring meetings … Leading owner at
the 2000 Belmont Park spring and Saratoga meetings ... Currently has
35 horses in training with Todd Pletcher, Tony Dutrow, Christophe
Clement and Kiaran McLaughlin
• While he usually kept his best fillies after racing as broodmares, in
1999, Evan went to the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale
and in an astute purchase, acquired the Strawberry Road (Aus) mare
Kobla, in foal to Mt. Livermore, for $1,050,000. Kobla, who had been
unsuccessful in two starts at the racetrack, was out of the graded
stakes winning Alydar mare Winglet and a full sister is the 1997
champion three-year-old filly Ajina. She would produce one of Evanʼs
best horses, Quality Road.
• His 3,000 acre Spring Hill Farm in Virginia was the largest breeding
farm in Virginia at the time of his death ... Evans was named Virginia
Breeder of the Year by the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders
Association in 1999-2001 and 2004-09.
• Evans horses were all sold at the 2011 Keeneland November sale.
The dispersal accounted for 170 purchases for $55,820,000 at the
sale, which made it the highest-grossing Thoroughbred dispersal ever
sold at a North American public auction. The highest-price of the
Evans dispersal was Christmas Kid, a seven-year-old Lemon Drop Kid
mare in foal to Bernardini, which went to Ashford Studʼs Aisling
Duignan on behalf Coolmore Stud partners John Magnier, Michael
Tabor, and Derrick Smith for $4.2-million.
• Several weeks before his death, Evans donated $50 million to his alma
mater, Yale University, to help with construction of a new campus for
its school of management.
• His father, the late Thomas Mellon Evans, bred champion Pleasant
Colony and owned Buckland Farm … Member of The Jockey Club.
• Was chairman and CEO of various companies including MacMillan
Inc. as well as personal business interests and investments.
Trainer
Jerry Hollendorfer ... Born: June 18, 1946, in Akron, Ohio ...
Residence: Point Richmond, Calif. ... Location: Based in Northern
California. Has stabled at Santa Anita since 2007. Has had great success
in Southern California. ... Family: wife Janet, has been very closely
associated with his stable as assistant. She suffered from a brain tumor in
2009, which was removed shortly before the Kentucky Derby. She
continues to work with the stable.

Quick facts about Jerry Hollendorfer:
• Hall of Fame trainer is in the midst of another big year in 2013 and
through Sept. 21 was ranked third nationally in wins with 187 and fifth
in earnings with $7,971,265 ... His best horses this year have been
three-time stakes winner Sahara Sky, who shipped East to take the
Met Mile (G1), Test Stakes (G1) winner Sweet Lulu, Del Mar Futurity
(G1) winner Tamarando, Halo Dolly, Hear the Ghost and Sister Kate.
• Earned his first Breedersʼ Cup victory in the 2010 Dirt Mile with Dakota
Phone and also had a runner-up fnish in the Ladiesʼ Classic with Blind
Luck, his Kentucky Oaks winner who was voted the Eclipse Award as
the yearʼs top 3-year-old female. Those scores provided him with
earnings of $900,000 over the two-day championships. Prior to 2010,
Hollendorfer saddled Blind Luck for a third-place finish in the 2009
Juvenile Fillies and Hystericalady for second in the 2007 Distaff ...
After missing the Breedersʼ Cup in 2011, returned in 2012 with two
starters, his best finish being a sixth in the Classic with Nonios.
• Entered racingʼs Hall of Fame in 2011, the only human chosen by the
votersʼ panel that year. He was joined in the induction by sterling
racemares Open Mind, Safely Kept and Sky Beauty. Of his induction,
he says: “You know my name goes on the plaque, but there should be
a thousand other names on there of people who have contributed to all
of this.”
• Became just the fourth trainer in history to saddle 6,000 winners on
Sept. 3, 2011. Fittingly, the victory came at Golden Gate Fields with
all-time leading jockey Russell Baze aboard his horse Just Tappin It.
Baze and Hollendorfer have combined for more than 2,500 victories in
their Hall of Fame careers.
• Blind Luckʼs Kentucky Oaks victory was the third for Hollendorfer,
leaving him one shy of D. Wayne Lukas and two behind the late
Woody Stephens. His other Oaks winners: Lite Light in 1991 and Pike
Place Dancer in ʼ96.
learned from them.” It was while he was working for Fanning at
Hollywood Park that he met his wife-to-be, Janet, who worked for
trainer Mel Stute.
• His Kentucky Derby experiences have been snake-bitten. Favorite in
1998 Event of the Year fractured a knee the week before, with many
feeling he could have won. Two years later, Globalize made it to within
two days of the race before the stable pony kicked him on the way
back to the barn. His finishes have often been marred by what many
observers have thought were bad rides, a muddy track, or general bad
luck, but Hollendorfer has never complained. Kentucky Derby finishes:
2012 Rousing Sermon 8th; 2009 Chocolate Candy 5th; 2007 Bwana
Bull 15th; 2006 Cause to Believe 13th; 2003 Eye of the Tiger 5th.
• In his first six years as a trainer, won only 59 races combined, but
gradually improved his numbers after that and now regularly wins
races at about a 20 percent clip. Even in those early days, he was
never discouraged. His take on that time: “I was just happy to be on
the backside and happy to be working. Those were good days for me.”
Working hard is one of Hollendorferʼs premier facets. He doesnʼt
vacation and he has no hobbies outside the racetrack except reading
detective stories.
• Northern Californiaʼs all-time winning trainer. Won every training title at
major Bay Area tracks from 1986 to 2008. Has been spending more
time in Southern California in recent years.
• Saddled 5,000th winner on Dec. 22, 2007, becoming only the fourth
trainer to reach that milestone.
• Love affair with the racetrack began as a teen-ager as he and buddies
bet on races at the long-defunct Acton Park in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio,
not too far from his hometown of Akron. It blossomed into a full-blown
career when he went to the San Francsco area to visit friends in his
early 20s. He talked his way onto the backstretch at Bay Meadows and
talked his way into a job with trainer Jerry Dutton. He continured his
apprenticeship with Jerry Fanning. Of his early training, Hollendorfer
says: “I got to work for a couple of good guys. Most of what I do today I
• First hit the national radar in the late-1980s as King Glorious won the
1988 Hollywood Futurity and came back in 1989 to win the Ohio Derby
and Haskell Invitational. Then came his early Oaks winners and such
other stakes winners as Event of the Year, who possibly would have
been the morning-line favorite for the 1998 Kentucky Derby had it not
been for an injury that ended his career as a racehorse. Hollendorfer
ranked Event of the Year as his best horse until Heatseeker. Other top
horses heʼs trained include Globalize, also hurt on his way to the 2000
Derby, Tuscan Evening, Chocolate Candy, Hystericalady, Blind Luck,
Heatseeker and Dakota Phone.
• Buys at the sales in the low to mid-range, often with his own money,
and then puts partnerships of his various owners together, and retains
part ownership of many horses he trains. Has spent millions on horses
the last few years, never spending very much on any one individual.

Co-Breeder
Adele Dilschneider ... Born: in Chicago ... Residence: St. Louis, Mo.
Quick facts about Adele Dilschneider:
• Dilschneider, with longtime partner Claiborne Farm, co-bred and races
Departing, out of her mare Leave and by Claiborne stallion War Front.
The gelding won the 2013 West Virginia Derby (G2), Super Derby
(G2), and Illinois Derby (G3), while finishing third in the Louisiana
Derby (G3) and sixth in the Preakness. ... Departing is the third foal
and third winner produced by Leave, bred by Claiborne and by the
farmʼs premier stallion Pulpit, who died in December 2012. Leave has
a weanling colt by Claiborne stallion Arch, who was co-owned by
Dilschneider, and has been bred back to War Front for 2014.
• Dilschneider was co-owner and co-breeder along with Claiborne of
Blame, who won three Grade 1 races in 2010, including a historic
victory in the Breedersʼ Cup Classic. Blame beat the previously
undefeated racemare Zenyatta, who won the 2009 Breedersʼ Cup
Classic. Despite the head-to-head advantage, Blame lost out to
Zenyatta for 2010 Horse of the Year honors. Blame was unanimously
voted the older mate champion for the year. He is a true homebred,
being out of the Seeking the Gold mare Liable, who also was co-bred
by Claiborne and raced by the farm and Dilschneider. Blame went
home to stud at Claiborne in 2011, retiring with a record of nine wins
from 13 starts and earnings of $4,368,214.
• In 2011, the partnership was represented in the Breedersʼ Cup by
homebred Cease, who ran fifth in the Breedersʼ Cup Marathon. Blame
and Cease are out of mares who are half-sisters. In 2012, Cease
capture the Maxxam Gold Cup at Sam Houston in March, and was
second in the G2 Hawthorne Gold Cup Oct. 6 ... In addition to Cease,
her other top runner has been Rumor, winner of the L.A. Woman
Stakes Oct. 7.
• In partnership with Claiborne, Dilschneider owned Blameʼs sire Arch,
who won the 1998 Super Derby (G1) and finished ninth in the
Breedersʼ Cup Classic.
• Also co-bred and co-owned Grade 2 winner and broodmare Yell and
Grade 2 winner and sire Congrats with Claiborne. The St. Louis
resident had her first Breedersʼ Cup starter owned solely in 2008,
when her homebred Terrain finished fourth behind Midshipman in the
Breedersʼ Cup Juvenile at Santa Anita Park.
• Dilschneider also bred and campaigned the talented Apart, winner of
the 2010 Super Derby (G2), Ack Ack Handicap (G3), and 2011 William
Donald Schaefer Memorial Stakes (G3). It was a repeat of the win by
Blame in the Schaefer Memorial the year prior, who like Apart, was
trained by Al Stall Jr. Dilschneiderʼs first top horse was Roar, who won
the Jim Beam Stakes (G2) (later called the Laneʼs End Stakes) in
1996.
• Owns about two dozen racehorses and 30 broodmares in partnership
with Claiborne … Dilschneider travels quite a bit from her Missouri
home to watch her horses race. “I wouldnʼt be in this business if I canʼt
watch my horses race,” she said.
• The resident of St. Louis bases her Thoroughbred operation in
Kentucky. She is the granddaughter of John Olin, who bred and owned
Cannonade, winner of the 100th Kentucky Derby in 1974. She became
involved in the industry in the early 1990s through her association with
the Hancock family and Claiborne Farm.
• Her family tree includes William Levis, founder of Corning-Illinois
Glass, the largest manufacturer of Midwestern beer bottles; and
Franklin Olin, founder of equitable Powder Co., the forerunner of Olin
Industries, a group of firearm, ammunition, and chemical companies
based in Missouri.

• Claiborne, which celebrated 100 years of operation in 2011, was the
co-owner and co-breeder (along with longtime farm client and family
friend Adele Dilschneider) of 2010 Breedersʼ Cup Classic winner
Blame, who beat previously undefeated Zenyatta. The champion
served his first season at stud at Claiborne in 2011.
• Claiborne, again in partnership with Adele Dilschneider, was
represented in 2013 by homebred Departing, winner of the Super
Derby (G2), West Virginia Derby (G2), and Illinois Derby (G3). ...
Departing is by War Front, who stands at Claiborne like his great sire
Danzig, as is multiple Group 1 winner and fellow 2013 Breedersʼ Cup
Classic contender Declaration of War. War Front also is the sire of
2013 UAE Derby (G2) winner Lines of Battle.
• In 2012, Claiborne Farm and Adele B. Dilschneider campaigned
stakes winners Cease and Rumor, the latter of which also is owned in
partnership with Ramona Bass. Cease, fifth in the 2011 Marathon, ran
as a homebred and was G1-placed in 2012, finishing third in the
Woodward Stakes at Saratoga. Claiborne also bred 2012 stakes
winner Plethora.
• On Jan. 17, 2011, Claiborne was honored with the Eclipse Award of
Merit for outstanding achievement in Thoroughbred racing. “Itʼs more
of a tribute to my grandfather and father,” said Seth Hancock. “My
grandfather started all this over here in Kentucky, and my dad built it
up into what it was, and Iʼm just trying to keep it going.”
• Located near Paris, Ky., Claiborne won Eclipse Awards as leading
breeder in 1979 and 1984 and has been premier North American
breeder by money won 10 times. A.B. Hancock Sr. established the
farm in the early 1900s, transferring his operation from Virginia.
Hancock Sr. ran the farm until 1947, before it was passed on to A.B.
“Bull” Hancock. In 1972, Bull handed over the reins to Seth, who has
been at the helm ever since.
• Claiborne stallions who have sired Breedersʼ Cup winners include Mr.
Prospector, Danzig, Secretariat, Coxʼs Ridge, Easy Goer, Nijinsky,
Private Account, Seeking the Gold, Arch, Pulpit, Eddington, and
Unbridled. Claiborne also demonstrated its international influence as
the breeder of the stallions Nureyev and Caerleon, and of the dam of
stallion Sadlerʼs Wells.
• Claiborne also was co-owner and co-breeder of Lure, who won the
Breedersʼ Cup Mile in 1992 and 1993. Other Claiborne runners in the
Breedersʼ Cup include Forty Niner (1988 Classic), Preach (1991
Juvenile Fillies) and Blameʼs sire Arch (1998 Classic).
• Claiborne won the 1984 Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes with
homebred Swale.
• The Gamely Corporation of the late William Haggin Perry bred many
high-class runners in partnership with Claiborne, including 1979
Belmont Stakes winner Coastal and a pair who ran in the Breedersʼ
Cup under Perryʼs name: Scan (1991 Mile) and Slavic (1989 Juvenile).
• Although the equine cemeteries at Claiborne are a veritable whoʼs who
of racing legends, the most famous horse laid to rest on the grounds is
1973 Triple Crown winner Secretariat.
• Famed Claiborne stallion Danzig, who founded an important branch of
the Northern Dancer sire line as the sire of Danehill, among others,
was euthanized at age 29 in Jan. 2006. His son War Front now stands
at Claiborne and is the best son of Danzig standing in America. His
yearlings have averaged $385,000 in 2013 – up $150,000 over his
2012 average.
• In addition to being partner and manager of Claiborne, Seth is a
director of Keeneland, a member of The Jockey Club, vice chairman of
the Thoroughbred Owners and Breedersʼ Association, and a member
of the American Graded Stakes Committee. He was on the board of
directors for Churchill Downs from 1973 to 2008.

Quick facts about RAP Racing:
• Hall of Fame basketball coach Pitino is making his first foray into the
Breedersʼ Cup World Championships since 2000 with 3-year-old
Goldencents in the Dirt Mile ... Goldencents made news earlier this
year by winning Santa Anitaʼs Sham Stakes and the Santa Anita Derby
prior to finishing 17th in the Kentucky Derby.
• RAP Racing is the third racing stable of the two-time NCAA basketball
champion as coach of the University of Kentucky in 1996 and the
University of Louisville in 2013. Previously, his horses raced under
Celtic Pride Stable and Olʼ Memorial Stable.
• Has run three horses in the Breedersʼ Cup World Championships –
two for Celtic Pride: The Groom Is Red, sixth in the 1998 Juvenile, and
Valiant Halory, 12th in the 2000 Sprint, as well as one for Celtic Pride
and Michael Tabor, A P Valentine, 14th in the 2000 Juvenile.
• Also has had two horses on the Triple Crown trail prior to Goldencents

A P Valentine, who was seventh in the Derby before finishing second
to Point Given in both the Preakness and Belmont Stakes.
• Has been involved in racing since the 1990s, mostly with trainer Nick
Zito, though in more recent times he has cast his lot with West Coast
trainer Doug OʼNeill, who trains Breedersʼ Cup-bound Goldencents for
Pitinoʼs RAP Racing and his partners Dave Kenney and WC Racing.
• Pitino holds the distinction of being the only menʼs coach in NCAA
history to lead three different schools (Providence, Kentucky, and
Louisville) to a Final Four.
• Since 2001, he has been the head coach at the University of
Louisville. He also has served as head coach at Boston University,
Providence College and the University of Kentucky, where he led that
program to the NCAA championship in 1996. He also has coached in

... Family: wife Johnna; sons Howard and Zachary.
Quick facts about David Jacobson:
• Jacobson is the son of the late Howard “Buddy” Jacobson, who was
the leading trainer in New York by wins in 1963, 1964, 1965, 1967 and
1968.
• A former assistant to the late Hall of Fame trainer Bobby Frankel,
Jacobson earned his first victory with Split Infinitive on July 3, 1976 at
Monmouth Park.
• Jacobson left the horse racing business in 1982 and spent 25 years in
the real estate industry before returning to training in 2007. He is
assisted by his brother, Douglas.
• In 2011, Jacobson earned his first stakes victory and first win in a
steeplechase race when Mabou, whom he claimed for $30,000,
captured the New York Turf Writers Cup (G1) at Saratoga Race
Course.
• On March 8, 2012, Jacobson claimed a gelded son of Peruvian named
Saginaw at Aqueduct Racetrack. Saginaw would go on to win 14 of 17
starts for Jacobson and co-owner Drawing Away Stable, including 10
stakes, and purses of $713,100. Saginaw was euthanized in August
2013 after breaking down in a race at Saratoga, having won 21 of 40
career starts and purses of $974,690.
• Since his return to racing, Jacobson has captured seven New York
Racing Association training titles, and tied for the leading trainer in
New York in 2012 with 110 victories. His meet titles have come at
Belmont Park (spring/summer 2013, fall 2012, fall 2011), Aqueduct
(fall 2012, inner track 2011-12, spring 2011 and 2013).
• When he won the 2013 Belmont Park spring-summer title with 44
victories he topped Todd Pletcherʼs record of 40 set in 2003.
• Jacobson has a candidate for the Breedersʼ Cup Sprint in Strapping
Groom. Claimed for $35,000 in May 2013, the 6-year-old son of 2001
Breedersʼ Cup Juvenile winner Johannesburg won the Grade 1 Forego
at Saratoga, giving Jacobson his first Grade 1 victory in a flat race.
• In his first three starts for Jacobson, Strapping Groom won the Lion
Cavern overnight stakes at Belmont Park in June, finished fifth in the
Grade 3 James Marvin in July and won the restricted Kid Russell
Stakes on Aug. 12, the latter two both at Saratoga.

Paragon Farms ... Owner(s): Diannah and Brandon Perry
Quick facts about Paragon Farms:
• Paragon Farms is the name of the Thoroughbred breeding and selling
operation of Diannah and Brandon Perry. Paragon offered their first
yearling consignment in the name of their Kentucky-based farm at the
Fasig-Tipton Saratoga select sale in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. in Aug.
2008.
• The Perrys bred Commander, by Broken Vow, from the Deputy
Minister mare Pout which he acquired privately. He sold Commander
through Laneʼs End for $105,000 to Fox Hill Farm at the 2009
Keeneland September yearling sale. The gelding now races for North
American Thoroughbred Horse Company and is trained by Troy
Taylor.
• The couple previously sold Quarter Horses and partnered along with
John and Jill Stephens in Vision Sales which concentrated on buying
yearlings and reselling them as two-year-olds. Horses that did not
bring sufficient amounts as resales were retained for their Vision
Racing division. One of them was Visionaire, who became a Grade 1
winner and started in the 2008 Kentucky Derby.
• The Perrys opted to consign their own horses as an extension of their
hands-on operation after sending them to other consignors to be sold
in previous years. “We do all the work on our farm, from the matings;
to foaling the mares out, to raising the young horses, to prepping them
for the sales,” Brandon Perry said in an Aug. 4, 2008 interview in The
Blood-Horse. “Then, for the last three or four days we own them, they
get handed off to someone else to be sold. Itʼs kind of like the old
saying, you know your own horse better than anyone else. Our intent
is to sell our own horses. Weʼre not going to seek out other horses to
consign.”
• Diannah (maiden name Ten Broeck) grew up in Palm Valley, Fla. on
the stateʼs northeast coast and riding horses was a key part of her
youth. Her father purchased a Quarter Horse operation in the area in
the early 1980s.
• The Perrys met while Brandon was managing his fatherʼs Quarter
Horse facility in Ocala, Fla. and they married in 2003.
• Commander, who was the first Breedersʼ Cup starter for all his
connections - trainer, owner and breeder - last year, heads into this
yearʼs Marathon with four wins from his last five outs, including a
victory in the Premier Handicap (G3) on Oct. 14 at his home base of
Hastings Racecourse in British Columbia. Last year, he vied for the
lead in the Marathon while racing four wide and tired to finish ninth.
Owner
North American Thoroughbred Horse Company ... Owner(s): Glen
Todd & Patrick Kinsella ... Location: Surrey, British Columbia, Canada.
... Web site: www.nathc.ca www.derbybarandgrill.com
Quick facts about North American Thoroughbred Horse Company:
• Commander, who was the first Breedersʼ Cup starter for both owner
North American Thoroughbred Horse Company and his trainer Troy
Taylor last year, heads into this yearʼs Marathon with four wins from
his last five outs, including a victory in the Premier Handicap (G3) on
Oct. 14 at his home base of Hastings Racecourse in British Columbia.
Last year, he vied for the lead in the Marathon while racing four wide
and tired to finish ninth.
• For Glen Todd, the North American Thoroughbred Horse Company
[which has both solely owned racehorses and syndicated them] is the
latest project to illustrate just how much he loves horse racing. Glenʼs
history in the horse racing game can be traced back to the moment his
parents met at Hastings Park in 1939. “Thereʼs a lot of history of it in
my family,” says Glen, who is best known outside of the Thoroughbred
racing circuit as the founder of the annual Canada Cup International
Womensʼ Fastpitch tourney at Softball City. He was inducted into the
B.C. Sports Hall of Fame in 2008 for his long-time involvement with
softball.
• His favorite childhood pastime was attending races with his father. Any
opportunity he had to be around Thoroughbred horses, and the people
who work with them, was considered an education. In 2009, Glen and
Thoroughbred partner, Patrick Kinsella, led Hastings Park Racecourse
ownerʼs standings with 41 wins. They are on top again in 2012, with 28
winners from 78 starters.
• Troy Taylor has been the head trainer for North American
Thoroughbred Horse Company since its inception. “Troy and I have
been friends for 50 years,” said Glen Todd. “In high school, I did
handicapping and writing about racing for the local newspaper. Troy is
the first person I wrote a story on.”
• In 2012, the stable ranked as the leading stakes winning group among
owners in North America by wins [as of late October], with an amazing
19 stakes victories for the year. Sixteen of those stakes were black
type. Among their stakes winners are Evelynʼs Dancer and Taylor
Said, both of whom have four stakes victories last year alone, Devil in
Disguise, Glencoe Kid, Caged Mistress, Marketway, and Taylorʼs Deal.
• Commander, who took his owners and his then 81-year-old trainer to
his first Breedersʼ Cup at this time last year, had a pair of stakes
victories as well, winning the S. W. Randall Plate H. and the B.C.
Premierʼs Handicap (G3),. The victory was the sixth in a row for
Commander, a four-year-old gelded son of Broken Vow. Bred in
Kentucky by Paragon Farms, Commander was a $105,000 graduate of
the 2009 Keeneland September yearling sale, and was a private
purchase from trainer Larry Jones in 2011..
• In the early days of their relationship “I was training in Hastings, and
he was in Seattle,” said Todd. “We used to swap horses back and
forth. Then I had to go to work. Troy became the fulltime trainer around
1980.”
• Some of these stakes wins the pair have shared include the Premierʼs
Championship, The Ascot Graduation, The CTHS Sales Stakes, The
Vancouver Sun, The Province Jim Coleman, The Delta Colleen, The
Miz Stakes, The Inaugural Handicap, The Ballerina, The New
Westminster, The Edmonton Distaff, The Boeing Stake, The John
Patrick, The Oregon Derby, The Oregon Oaks and The Richmond
Derby Trial.
• The stable currently numbers about 60 horses, some in partnership,
headquartered at Hastings.
• Todd opened the Derby Bar & Grill in Surrey, British Columbia a few
years ago. The restaurant provides a complete off-track betting
teletheater introducing new people to horse racing. It offers simulcast
horse racing from tracks around North America on dozens of screens,
including tabletop versions. Throughout, several automated machines
take bets, as does the mutual teller located at the back of the
restaurant. Like a proud father, he has framed photos of his winning
horses lining the hallways outside of the restaurant. The facilityʼs Web
site (www.derbybarandgrill.com), features twitter feeds and the dayʼs
menu of simulcast racing in addition to the menu of food. Among those
tweeting is jockey Mario Gutierrez, who became an overnight
superstar in the United States when he piloted Iʼll Have Another to win
last yearʼs Kentucky Derby. Gutierrez rides many of Toddʼs horses and
started his career at Hastings.
• Glen Todd said he purchased Commander for $50,000 from Larry
Jones in the summer of 2011. “Heʼs a big horse, and he was pretty
rank,” he said. They decided to geld him early in 2012, and the new
gelding promptly went on a six-race winning streak
Trainer

• Taylor finished in a tie for second as leading trainer at Hastings
Racecourse for 2013, and was the leading trainer there the three years
prior. He has trained horses at nearly every race track on the West
Coast, including Longacres, Tanforan, Bay Meadows, Golden Gate,
Santa Anita, Del Mar, Hollywood Park, Playfair, Yakima Meadows,
Portland Meadows and many others.
• Taylor often utilizes jockey Mario Gutierrez, who became an overnight
superstar in the United States when he piloted Iʼll Have Another to win
last yearʼs Kentucky Derby. Gutierrez started his career at Taylorʼs
home track of Hastings Racecourse, and Taylor took the young rider
along when he ran some horses in southern California. It was Taylor
that urged the jockey to stay in California.

Breeder
Patricia Chapman ... Residence: Chester County, Pa. ... Family: Five
children, seven grandchildren.
• Roy Chapman died in 2006, and Patricia carried on the coupleʼs
breeding and racing stables.
Quick facts about Patricia Chapman:
• Smarty Jones retired to Three Chimneys Farm after the Belmont and
now stands at Northview, Pa.
• Centralinteligence, who is aiming for this yearʼs Breedersʼ Cup, is
appropriately enough, a son of Smarty Jones bred by Patricia
Chapman, who campaigned the popular dual classic winner. The
5-year-old gelding started the year with a fourth-place finish in the Cool
Frenchy, a runner-up effort in the Los Angeles stakes (G3) and a win
in the Triple Bend (G1). He is conditioned by Ron Ellis for a syndicate
that includes Amerman Racing, Bongo Racing, and Gary Finder.
• The Chapmans owned Someday Farm until 1999 when they sold the
100-acre property due to Royʼs declining health. They made the
decision to keep homebred Smarty Jones because they knew he was
their best horse.
• Patricia and late husband Roy Chapman owned Kentucky Derby and
Preakness winner Smarty Jones. Trainer John Servis said Roy
Chapman, who suffered from emphysema, told him “ ʻI donʼt know how
much longer Iʼve got on this earth, but Iʼd like to get to the Derby.ʼ ”
Smarty went undefeated until his second-place finish in the Belmont
Stakes. He received a $5 million bonus for winning the Rebel, the
Arkansas Derby, and the Kentucky Derby.
• The couple began breeding and racing in the late 1980s and won the
1989 Maryland Hunt Cup with Uncle Merlin, who went on to the 1990
Grand National.
• Roy and Patricia often rode and were members of several local hunt
clubs.
• Roy Chapman grew up in Germantown, Pa. and inherited his interest
in horses from his father. Roy built up a network of successful car
dealerships in Pennsylvania.

horse ... “Itʼs so exciting just to be thinking about running a horse in the
Breedersʼ Cup,” Samhammer says. “I never thought Iʼd have a horse
like Indian Jones. We claimed him for $25,000 and weʼre now looking
at the Breedersʼ Cup. Thatʼs incredible.” Indian Jones was claimed for
$25,000 on May 26, 2013, by Samhammer and trainer Philip T.
Aristone ... Indian Jones had previously raced for Aristone and another

Breeder
Patricia Prudy ... Born: Born in Detroit and raised in Grosse Pointe
Shores, Mich. ... Family: Husband Chris ... Education: She attended
Mercy College and graduated with a degree in retailing and business.
Then, she decided to pursue a career in dentistry and enrolled in dental
school at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland.
Quick facts about Patricia Prudy:
• The Purdys, who are primarily commercial breeders, own Ivy League
Farm, a 65-acre breeding facility in Ithaca, N.Y., near Cornell
University ... London Bridge, pre-entered for the Marathon will be their
first starter in the Breedersʼ Cup World Championships.
• Purdy was named New York Breeder of the Year in 2002, the same
year as the filly Carson Hollow was named New York-bred Horse of
the Year, champion sprinter and champion 3-year-old filly.
• Other top horses bred include 2006 Kentucky Derby starter Sharp
Humor, multiple stakes winner Willy Beamin and Ibboyee, the 2009
Champion New York 2-year-old.
• Patricia and Chris met in dental school. When they graduated in 1986,
they moved to Ithaca, Chrisʼ hometown, and he joined his fatherʼs
dental practice. They also bought their farm, and Patty, who decided
not to practice dentistry, began breeding and racing horses.
• Patricia always loved horses. She began riding competitively at the
age of 12, and when she was 16, her parents bought her a
thoroughbred mare.
Owner
Waratah Thoroughbreds ... Owner(s): Paul Fudge ... Born: 1949 in
Wollongong, New South Wales, Australia ... Breeding/Racing
Operation: Waratah Thoroughbreds has been particularly active at
European bloodstock sales over the past few years with agent Michael
Goodbody often doing the bidding on its behalf. In Aug. 2011, it bought
the sale-topper at the Arqana Yearling Sales in Deauville, France, a
Galileo filly, for US $2.28 million. Dec. 2011 saw the completion of
construction of Waratahʼs state-of-the-art US $27 million Bong Bong
Farm at Moss Vale, New South Wales, some 70 miles south west of
Sydney. At the prestigious Tattersalls Book 1 October Yearling Sales in
Newmarket, England, in 2012, Waratah bought eight lots at a total cost of
US $5.2 million.
Quick facts about Waratah Thoroughbreds:
• On the track, Waratahʼs biggest victory thus far was provided by the
Christophe Clement-trained Miss World when she won Garden City
Handicap (G1) at Belmont in 2009. The only British victory in the red
and white Waratah silks came when the John Gosden-trained Red
Hand won a maiden race at Bath in Oct. 2012.
• In 2013, Waratah has horses in training in Australia with Garhame
Begg, Peter Moody, Joe Pride, Craig Ritchie and Guy Walter; in
France with Mikel Delzangles, Andre Fabre, Carlos Laffon-Parias and
Alain de Royer-Dupre; and in Britain with John Gosden.
• Waratah Thoroughbreds has been particularly active at European
bloodstock sales over the past few years with agent Michael
Goodbody often doing the bidding on its behalf. In Aug. 2011, it bought
the sale-topper at the Arqana Yearling Sales in Deauville, France, a

Sydney. At the prestigious Tattersalls Book 1 October Yearling Sales
in Newmarket, England, in 2012, Waratah bought eight lots at a total
cost of US $5.2 million.
• Fudge was initially a successful textile importer and retailer before
diversifying into Coalbed Methane gas extraction. His company,
Panagea Resources, sold a Coalbed Methane exploration permit to
drill in parts of Queensland, Australia, for US $460 million in 2009. In
2013 Australiaʼs Business Review Weekly rated him as the nationʼs
66th richest man with a fortune of US $715 million.
Trainer
Jo Hughes ... Location: Lambourn, England. ... Family: Partner is
former trainer Paul Blockley... She has two children, Lizzie and James.
Quick facts about Jo Hughes :
• After spending 15 years working as a nurse in a hospital in England,
Jo Hughes turned her hand to training in 2011. She caught the racing
bug when she met her partner Paul Blockley some 14 years ago when
he worked as a private trainer. Her biggest victory came with
Caledonia Lady in the Sprint Stakes (Eng-G3) at Sandown in July
2012.
• Hughes will have her first Breedersʼ Cup runner when London Bridge
lines up in the 2013 Marathon. The three-year-old Arch colt won three
minor turf handicaps quick succession in June.
• In Oct. 2008, Blockley was banned for 30 months by the BHA for
passing inside information and associated lay betting of horses he
trained. Days before his ban was enforced, he gained his first Group 1
winner when Zafisio took the Criterium International (Fr-G1) at
Saint-Cloud.
• Has ridden winners on the Flat and under National Hunt rules.

Quick facts about Glen Hill Farm:
• Lavin purchased the former Greentree Stud property near Ocala, Fla.,
in 1966 to create 400-acre Glen Hill Farm. In April 2008, Lavinʼs
grandson, Craig Bernick, took over the reins of Glen Hill, becoming its
president and CEO after working at Alberto-Culver for a time. Hap
Proctor has been running the farm since 1991.
• Glen Hill Farm, which captured the 1994 Distaff with One Dreamer,
has experienced a resurgence in recent years and 2013 has been no
exception. Multiple graded stakes winner Marketing Mix is pointing for
a return engagement in the Filly & Mare Turf after being the runner-up
last year. She won the Gamely Handicap (G1) in May on Betfair
Hollywood Parkʼs turf course and came back to beat the boys in the
Sunset Handicap (G3) at the same venue in July.
• Marketing Mix has been generating some buzz outside of the world of
horse racing. She, and Glen Hill Farm, were profiled in the Aug. 6
edition of Forbes.com and she has been unofficially “adopted” by
Market Share, a marketing analytics company.
• In 2013, other stakes winners include homebreds Wishing Gate,
winner of the San Clemente (G2) and second in the Del Mar Oaks
(G1) and Procurement, who captured the La Puente in April. Customer
Base, 11th in the 2011 Juvenile Fillies Turf, competed in graded
stakes and won the Lucie Manet in July.
• In 2012, the farm was been represented by Grade 2 winners Marketing
Mix and homebred Old Time Hockey. In 2011, the farm campaigned
multiple graded stakes winner Banned. Unfortunately, Banned was
euthanized in Oct. 2011, a week after he underwent surgery to repair
fractured sesamoids in his right front ankle. The farm also bred 2011
Haskell Invitational (G1) winner Coil.
• Glen Hill Farm has bred or raced over 80 other stakes winners,
including One Dreamer, Relaunch, Convenience, Top Rung, Concept
Win, Repriced, Rich in Spirit, and Closeout...Rich in Spiritʼs daughter is
the homebred Grade 2 winner Wishing Gate. The next generation of
runners being produced by Glen Hill includes a 2013 foal by
Unbridledʼs Song out of multiple graded stakes winner Closeout,
making the filly a sixth generation homebred.
• Willard Proctor trained for Glen Hill in California, while Proctorʼs son
Tom had the Florida and Midwest strings. Tom took over all the Glen
Hill Farm training duties following his fatherʼs passing in 1998.
• Relaunch is probably the best-remembered horse who raced with the
iconic Glen Hill silks. After a distinguished racing career, he went on to
become a prominent sire. His numerous stakes winners campaigned
by Lavin include Potentiality, Carload, Media Plan and One Dreamer,
the latter of which won the1994 Breedersʼ Cup Distaff. Coincidentally,
Alberto-Culver sponsored the Distaff that year... One Dreamer died in
Feb. 2010 at age 22 and is buried at the farm but her legacy lives on
through her progeny. One Dreamerʼs granddaughter, Broken Dreams,
competed in the 2011 Breedersʼ Cup Turf Sprint, finishing 13th.
• Lavin has won awards and honors for his philanthropic, civic, and
business endeavors. After Hurricane Katrina hit, the Lavin Family
Foundation and Alberto-Culver made sizable donations to Tulane
University and to hurricane victims.
• Relaunch also is the sire of Honour and Glory, With Anticipation, and
top California sire Ceeʼs Tizzy, sire of dual Breedersʼ Cup Classic
winner Tiznow, among others.
• Lavin purchased two fillies at the 1967 Saratoga yearling sale and his
first stakes winner was Gabby Abby, who won a division of the 1967
Indian Maid Handicap at Hawthorne.
• Lavin is the author of a book entitled “Winners Make It Happen:
Reflections of a Self-Made Man.”
• During World War II, he served four years of sea duty and participated
in nine invasions. Following military service, he acquired a small
Chicago-based regional maker of beauty supplies in 1955 and
parlayed it into the Alberto-Culver Company, an international Fortune
1000 company that produces and markets well-known consumer
brands in the toiletry, household, and food fields.

Quick facts about Tom Proctor:
• Proctor is headed back to the Breedersʼ Cup Filly & Mare Turf with
multiple graded stakes winner Marketing Mix, who finished second in
the 2012 edition. The winner of over $1.9 million through
mid-September captured the Gamely (G1) in May and then beat the
boys in the Sunset Handicap (G3) at 1 1/2 miles in July.
• His other stakes winners in 2013 include Glen Hill Farm homebreds
Wishing Gate, who took the San Clemente (G2) and finished second in
the Del Mar Oaks (G1) and Procurement, winner of the La Puente at
Santa Anita. Customer Base won the Lucie Manet at Betfaor
Hollywood Park.
• Proctor started two horses in the 2011 Breedersʼ Cup at Churchill
Downs – finishing 13th with Broken Dreams in the Turf Sprint and 11th
with Customer Base in the Juvenile Fillies Turf... Made just his fourth
Breedersʼ Cup appearance in 2010 with two runners, Keertana, third in
the Filly & Mare Turf and Banned, fifth in the Juvenile Turf.
• Proctor is best known for his work with 1994 Distaff winner One
Dreamer, who upset at 47-1. Glen Hill Farmʼs homebred mare won
more then $1.2 million in her career and went on to be a successful
broodmare at the farm.
• Proctor ranks among the nationʼs top 35 trainers consistently and
enjoyed a banner year in 2012, when his horses bankrolled
$3,531,595 and topped his 2011 best of $3,454,149 in purses.
Through Sept. 19, 2013, he had 968 victories overall with $33,453,825
earned by his starters, and 42 graded stakes triumphs.
• Graded stakes winners in 2012 include Pataky Kid
(Arlington-Washington Futurity (G3)); Old Time Hockey (La Jolla
Handicap (G2)); Marketing Mix (Dance Smartly (G2); Rodeo Drive
(G1)); and Snow Top Mountain (All Along (G3)).
• With a string of about 80 horses racing coast to coast, Proctor said he
has no particular home base and will stable at tracks where his horses
are most competitive … Has wintered at Tampa Bay Downs the last
few years while racing the rest of the year primarily in Kentucky and
New York. He also maintains a division at Arlington Park each summer
… “Wherever I am at is my home track. I am based where ever there
is a paymaster (horsemenʼs bookkeeper) of purses,” he said.
• His assistant of more than 20 years is Nick Carrillo.
• Said through the years he often has duplicated his father by winning
the same stakes races … “Something I do is if Dadʼs won a stake and I
win (the same) stakes, I put the pictures together. Thatʼs happened a
little more than you might think,” he said.
• Proctorʼs graded stakes winners include Banned, Broken Dreams,
Marketing Mix, Keertana, Dilemma, No Inflation, Closeout, Purim,
Cryptoquip, Rich in Spirit, Indy Groove, Bonus Pack, Openstock,
Concept Win, One Dreamer, Split Run, and Good Potential.
• He took out his trainerʼs license in 1978 and has trained for Leonard
Lavinʼs Glen Hill Farm, owner of One Dreamer, for three decades …
Another main client was Barbara Hunter for whom Proctor has trained
for about six years.
• First winner was Iʼm Smokin, whom Proctor considers the fastest he
has ever trained ... The California-bred, California champion sprinter
won 14 of 44 career starts, including three stakes, and earned
$326,395 ... He was good enough to have a $100,000 race for
2-year-olds named after him at Del Mar.
• Proctor hails from a racing family. He is the son of the late Willard
Proctor, a renowned trainer, who conditioned more than 70 stakes
winners incliding Convenience, Gallant Romeo, Lovelier Linda and
Major Impact during a career that spanned 60 years. Willard trained for
Leonard Lavinʼs Glen Hill Farm before Tom took over ... Tomʼs brother,
Hap, manages the 325-acre Glen Hill Farm in Ocala, Fla. … Also
gained horse experience from a pair of uncles – Jack Proctor, who ran
their family farm in Texas and Allen Proctor, who managed Glen Hill
until 1990.

Quick facts about Windfields Farm:
• The 1,500-acre Windfields ceased to operate as a private farm in
Oshawa, Ontario, Canada in 2009, after shutting down operations as a
commercial venture in 2008. As of Nov. 1, 2008, the stallion station
was closed and the boarding of mares and other ancillary businesses
were stopped. When announcing the decision on Aug. 20, 2009 to
shut down entirely, Judith Taylor Mappin termed it “difficult but
inevitable.” The broodmares and weanlings were designated for
auction at the Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society mixed winter
sale and the remaining bloodstock was dispersed at the Keeneland
November sale. All of the farmʼs remaining equipment was liquidated
at auction on March 6, 2011. Windfieldsʼ Maryland division had already
been sold in 1988 and North Stallion Station and Rowland Farm
• Pool Play, who is a candidate for the 2013 Marathon and is owned by
Will Farish and trained by Mark Casse, is winless in seven starts this
year through Oct. 13, but the 8-year-old captured the 2011 Stephen
Foster (G1) in 2011 and the 2012 Hawthorne Gold Cup (G2) prior to
his eighth place finish in last yearʼs Breedersʼ Cup Classic.
• The farmʼs 73-year history in racing began on May 1, 1936, when farm
founder E.P. Taylor purchased a gelding named Animessic for $800
and he won in Taylorʼs silks later that same day. A successful venture
with several other runners and a breeding program soon followed.
• Taylor became the first Canadian member of The Jockey Club in 1953,
and received Eclipse Awards as Outstanding Breeder in 1977 and
1983. Although Taylor was successful in many areas of the
Thoroughbred industry, he will be best remembered as the breeder of
Northern Dancer, Canadaʼs first Kentucky Derby winner and later one
of the most influential sires in Thoroughbred history.Taylor and/or
Windfields Farm bred a record 48 champions and 361 stakes winners,
including winners of more than 10,000 races and over $84 million.
• Windfields was the only farm to breed and sell at auction three Epsom
Derby winners – Nijinsky II, The Minstrel and Secreto, all sons of
Northern Dancer and all successful sires in their own right. Some of
the top Windfields broodmares were Kamar, La Lorgnette, Smitten,
South Ocean and Square Angel. Windfields was North Americaʼs
leading breeder in purses won nine times, leading breeder of stakes
winners 13 times, and leading breeder by number of races won 19
times. The farm also was Canadaʼs leading racing stable 15 times, and
Windfields-breds captured 21 runnings of Canadaʼs premier event, the
Queenʼs Plate.
• When Taylor retired in 1980 after being incapacitated by a stroke, his
son Charles took over management of the farm and Windfieldʼs focus
shifted toward breeding and selling in the commercial marketplace. A
prominent journalist and author, Charles Taylor quickly became a
major influence in the Thoroughbred industry as the farm produced a
steady stream of record-breaking yearling consignments and
internationally acclaimed runners. After Charlesʼ death in 1997, his
sister Judith Taylor Mappin and his widow Noreen took the helm of the
familyʼs beloved farm until its closure in 2009.
• Windfields Farm bred six Breedersʼ Cup starters including 2012
Classic finisher Pool Play; Flag Down, who ran third in the 1997 Turf
and 12th in the 1994 Classic; 1994 Juvenile Fillies11th place finisher
Honky Tonk Tune; and 1996 Classic sixth place finisher Tamayaz. The
farm was the co-owners with Sam-Son Farm of two Breedersʼ Cup
starters – Regal Classic, runner-up in the 1987 Juvenile, and Regal
Intention, who finished 10th in the 1989 Sprint. Windfield Farms was
also the sole owner of Commemorate, who was the runner-up in the
1984 Sprint.
• After its closure, the Taylor family partnered with real estate
developers to build residential homes on the east side of the property.
As part of the downsizing, large portions were sold to the University of
Ontario Institute of Technology and Durham College, which erected
parking lots on the southeast corner of the farm. Some of the historic
barns, the grave of Northern Dancer, plus a trillium forest where 15 of
the famous Windfields horses are buried, have been preserved as a
commemorative park. The other horses buried there include Archerʼs
Bay, Canadiana, New Providence, South Ocean, Vice Regent, Victoria
Park, and Windfields.
• During its heyday, Windfield bred two Eclipse Award winners, Devilʼs
Bag and Glorious Song, in addition to European chamions Storm Bird,
El Gran Senor, Shareef Dancer, Awaasif, Danzatore, and Try My Best.
Other major stallions and stakes winners bred at Windfields include
Storm Bird, Nijinsky II, the Minstrel, Vice Regent, Archerʼs Bay, Saint
Ballado and Northern Taste.
• Peter Poole, who had worked at the farm since 1950 and was its
general manager until his retirement, died on May 14, 2010 at the age
of 89.
Owner
William S. Farish ... Born: March 17, 1939, Houston, Texas ...
Residence: Laneʼs End Farm, Versailles, Ky.; Wellington, Fla. ... Family:
wife Sarah; children William S. “Bill” Farish Jr., Mary Farish Johnston,
Laura Farish Chadwick and Hillary Farish Stratton ... Education:
Attended the University of Virginia. ... Web site: www.lanesend.com
Quick facts about William S. Farish:
• Farish has again been well represented as both a breeder and owner
in 2013. Palace Malice, a son of Laneʼs End stallion and 2007
Breedersʼ Cup Classic winner Curlin, became the fourth Belmont
Stakes winner bred solely or in partnership by Farish when he won the
final leg of the Triple Crown in June. Laneʼs End consigned Palace
Malice as agent at the 2011 Keeneland September yearling sale,
where he sold for $25,000 to bloodstock agent Colin Brennan.
• Out of the Royal Anthem mare Palace Rumor, Palace Malice followed
up his Belmont triumph with a victory in the Jim Dandy Stakes (G2) at
Saratoga. The bay colt rallied to finish fourth in the Travers Stakes
(G1) after missing the break and stamped himself as a Breedersʼ Cup
Classic contender with a runner-up finish against older horses in the
Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1) in late September.
• Laneʼs End Racing also bought into Honor Code, runner up in the
Champagne Stakes (G1) and Breedersʼ Cup Juvenile candidate, as a
yearling from his breeder, Dell Ridge Farm. Honor Code is from the
final the final crop of champion A.P. Indy, the flagship sire of Laneʼs
End Farm.
• Farish has a history of success in the Breedersʼ Cup series. In
partnership with Kilroy Thoroughbred Partnership, Farish bred Court
Vision, winner of the 2011 Breedersʼ Cup Mile. With William Kilroy,
Farish bred eventual Horse of the Year A.P. Indy, winner of the 1992
Breedersʼ Cup Classic. With Ogden Mills Phipps, he bred Storm Song,
winner of the 1996 Breedersʼ Cup Juvenile Fillies. With G. Watts
Humphrey, he bred Sacahuista, who won the 1987 Breedersʼ Cup
Distaff.
• Zenyatta, the 2010 Horse of the Year and winner of the 2008
Breedersʼ Cup Distaff and 2009 Breedersʼ Cup Classic, is boarded at
Laneʼs End Farm. She produced her first foal, a Bernardini colt, in
2012, a colt by Tapit on April 1, 2013 and is currently in foal to top
Claiborne Farm sire War Front.
• Laneʼs End is currently home to 17 stallions, including leading sire
Smart Strike, two-time Horse of the Year Curlin, fellow Classic winner
Pleasantly Perfect, and Breedersʼ Cup Turf winner English Channel.
Upon his retirement G1 winner and millionaire Morning Line will join
the Laneʼs End stallion roster.
• In 2011, leading sire A.P. Indy was pensioned at Laneʼs End Farm.
The 1992 Horse of the Year is a son of Broodmare of the Year
Weekend Surprise, who was also bred by Farish and Kilroy. They also
bred her other famous son, Summer Squall, winner of the 1990
Preakness Stakes.
• Gulch, another standout Laneʼs End stallion, was pensioned in late
2009 and transferred to Old Friends.
• In 2011, Laneʼs End was the leading consignor at both the Keeneland
September and November Sales, setting a record for a consignor at
Keeneland. Laneʼs End has sold more than 355 stakes winners and
have been the leading consignor by number of Grade 1 winners sold.
Among them champions and/or Grade 1 winners A.P. Indy, Saint
Liam, Wait a While, Jazil, Rags to Riches, Summer Squall, Lemon
Drop Kid, Quality Road, Stevie Wonderboy, and Thunder Gulch.
• Farish was honored with the 2009 Eclipse Award of Merit for a lifetime
of outstanding achievement in Thoroughbred racing. He earned the
Eclipse Award as outstanding breeder in both 1992 and 1999.
• Farish is Keenelandʼs all-time leading owner, often in partnerships,
and is only the third owner to receive a gold pitcher, earned after 25
graded stakes wins at the Lexington oval.
• Farish has hosted Queen Elizabeth II on her visits to Kentucky, most
recently to attend the 2007 Kentucky Derby, as well as President
George H.W. Bush and President George W. Bush, longtime family
friends.
• In 1999, Farish was the first breeder since A. J. Alexander in 1880 to
breed or co-breed two horses (Charismatic and Lemon Drop Kid) who
combined to win the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness and the Belmont
in the same year.
• Farish began his own stallion division in 1985 by syndicating handicap
standouts Fit to Fight, Heroʼs Honor and Dixieland Band; the last, who
died in 2010 at age 30, was bred by Sarahʼs father, Bayard Sharp, and
campaigned by her mother.
• Entered the national spotlight as owner of 1972 Preakness Stakes
winner Bee Bee Bee. Singly or in partnership, Farish has raced more
than 150 stakes winners, including 2003 Horse of the Year Mineshaft
(who stands at Laneʼs End), 2000 Kentucky Oaks winner Secret
Status and 2003 Epsom Oaks winner Casual Look, the latter during
his stint as ambassador.
• One of the worldʼs most well-known and influential horsemen, Farish
has served the industry in a number of high-profile positions: member
of The Jockey Club since 1970; vice chair from 1983 to 2010, and a
long-time member of the Board of Stewards; director and former chair
of the Executive Committee of the Breedersʼ Cup; member of the
Board of Directors of the Keeneland Association and a Keeneland
trustee; chairman of the board of Churchill Downs from 1992 to 2001;
former chair of the American Horse Council.
• Will and Sarah Farish founded Laneʼs End in Versailles, Ky., in 1979.
A portion of the property was formerly Bosque Bonita Farm (“Beautiful
Woods”), a Thoroughbred farm owned by Abe Buford, who was a
general for the Confederacy. Leamington, sire of the first Kentucky
Derby winner Aristides, stood at stud there. The farm now
encompasses 3,000 owned or leased acres and is one of the worldʼs
leading comprehensive Thoroughbred operations and sales
consignors. Farish also owns a second farm, Laneʼs End Texas near
Hempstead.
• The first horse Will Farish raced was a filly named Cream Pie,
purchased at Keenelandʼs 1963 September yearling sale for $12,500
in partnership with his father-in-law, breeder/owner Bayard Sharp, an
original director of Delaware Park. Farishʼs first stakes winner was
$9,700 purchase Kaskaskia, winner of the 1967 Youthful and Juvenile
stakes.
• Farish is heavily involved in politics as an influential Republican
fundraiser and advisor. He was part of the campaign for future
president George H.W. Bush, who celebrated his victory with a game
of horseshoes at Farishʼs Laneʼs End Farm. From 2001 to 2004, he
served as United States Ambassador to the Court of St. James for
President George W. Bush.
• His holdings include the William Stamps Farish Fund, which provides
millions for charitable causes, including a $1 million donation to the
Permanently Disabled Jockey Fund in 2010 to jump-start a $10 million
to $12 million endowment fund. Farish also is a major supporter of
equine research through the Grayson-Jockey Club Research
Foundation and the Maxwell H. Gluck Center.
• Will Farish was a stockbroker in Houston and later president of
Fluorex, an international mining and exploration company, and
Navarro Exploration Company. He was a founding director of the New
York holding company Eurus, and of Capital National Bank of
Houston. He owns W. S. Farish Co., a Houston trust company founded
by his grandfather in 1929 to manage the family assets.

Quick facts about Mark E. Casse:
• Casse has started 15 horses in the Breedersʼ Cup and came close in
2008 with Canadian Filly Triple Crown winner Sealy Hill, who led in
deep stretch, but finished second in the Filly and Mare Turf, and with
Delegation, third in the 2012 Dirt Mile. Six of his horses have
competed in the Juvenile Fillies.
• Casse has won five Sovereign Awards as Canadaʼs top trainer,
including consecutively in 2011-2012, and in back-to-back-to-back
years (2006-2007-2008). He holds the record for the most consecutive
wins. Two of his trainees were the Canadian Horse of the Year and
eight are Sovereign Award winners and have a combined 12 trophies
among them- Uncaptured (2012 Horse of the Year and 2-Year-Old
male), Spring in the Air (2012 3-Year-Old Filly), Delightful Mary (2010
2-Year-Old Filly), Marchfield (2008-09 Outstanding Older Horse on
dirt), Sealy Hill (2007 3-Year-Old Filly, Turf Female, and Horse of the
Year), Kimchi (2006 3-Year-Old Filly), Added Edge (2002 2-Year-Old
Male) and Exciting Story (1999 2-Year-Old Male).
• Although 2013 was lagging behind Casseʼs spectacular success in
2012, he was still ranked in the top 10 with $5,853,619 in earnings
through September 26 and won a number of significant graded stakes
and major Canadian stakes, including the Prince of Wales which is the
second leg of the Triple Crown, this year. A top trainer at Woodbine for
more than a decade, he was on his way in to his seventh consecutive
title and eighth overall with almost three times as many wins as his
nearest competitor. He has been the top juvenile trainer there for the
past 15 years.
• Casse had his career-best year in 2012, ranking 7th in earnings in
North America with earnings of $10,234,707 and 129 wins, including
many top stakes, to build upon his record-setting success in 2011,
when his horses topped $7 million in purses and won 140 races. “It
was the best year weʼve ever had. Itʼs funny. We thought 2011 was
pretty good, but then last year just blew that one away,” said Casse,
who ended up ranked in the top five of graded stakes-winning trainers.
• Casse had a bevy of promising two-year-old fillies in his barn in 2012,
including Spring Venture, who won the Natalma Stakes (G2) at
Woodbine on the way to a 13th place finish in the Juvenile Fillies Turf.
Her stablemate, John Oxleyʼs Spring in the Air, who closed strongly for
second in the Natalma and went on to win the Alcibiades (G1), was
fifth in the Juvenile Fillies. In 2011, Northern Passion took the same
route to the Juvenile Fillies, where she finished seventh. Spring
Venture was Casseʼs fourth Natalma winner in seven years.
• Casseʼs impressive colt Uncaptured, who was under consideration for
the 2013 Dirt Mile, took the 2012 Clarendon, Vandal, and Swynford
Stakes as a juvenile after breaking his maiden at first asking for owner
Oxley. Although he skipped the Breedersʼ Cup, Uncaptured was voted
as Canadaʼs Horse of the Year and 2-Year-old champion male at
yearʼs end. “Heʼs a beautiful moving horse. Heʼs just all class,” said
Casse. Uncaptured won the 2013 Prince of Wales Stakes, the second
leg in Canadaʼs Triple Crown, giving Casse his second straight trophy
from the race and third overall.
• Casse added to a strong 2012 with 3-year-olds winning graded stakes.
Oxleyʼs filly Dixie Strike won the Prince of Wales Stakes, the second
jewel in the Canadian Triple Crown, after finishing third against the
boys in the first leg, the prestigious Queens Plate. She also won the
Selene Stakes (G3) and the Florida Oaks. Prospective and Stealcase,
both owned by Oxley as well, are multiple 2012 derby winners, with
Prospective taking the Tampa Bay Derby (G2) and the Ohio Derby
(G3) and Stealcase notching the Ontario Derby (G3).
• Casse oversees an expansive stable of over 80 horses and is based at
Woodbine in Ontario, Canada, with divisions a major division in
Kentucky overseen by his son and top assistant Norman, while his
wife Tina operates a training center in Ocala, Fla. named Moonshadow
Farm. The operation employs more than 50 people in the United
States and Canada. Casse is the former private trainer and operations
director for the massive Mockingbird Farm, which former owner Harry
Mangurian dispersed in 1999.
• In 2011, he won a record 119 races at Woodbine and more purses
than any other horseman in a single year ($6,670,906) to eclipse the
mark he set in 2007.
• Casse won the 1,000th race of his career on Aug. 9, 2008 when
Laragh won a maiden allowance for juvenile fillies at Woodbine.
Through Sept. 25, 2013, he had won 1,592 races in his career.
• One of his favorite horses is Sealy Hill, the only filly to capture the
Canadian Filly Triple Crown and a Eugene Melnyk homebred who was
retired after nearly winning the 2008 Breedersʼ Cup Filly and Mare Turf
and is now a top young broodmare for Melynk. “I really miss having
her in the barn,” Casse said, who had one of her daughters in the barn
in 2012. His other good horses have included Met Mile (G1) upset
winner Exciting Story, 2011 Stephen Foster Handicap (G1) winner
Pool Play, Seaside Retreat, who ran 10th in the 2006 Kentucky Derby,
Top Notch Lady, who competed in the 2006 Kentucky Oaks,
Marchfield, winner of the $500,000 Breedersʼ Stakes (G1) in 2007 and
the Sky Classic (G2) in 2009.
• Father, Norman, retired as the chairman of the board of the Ocala
Breedersʼ Sales in 2006 and is a 40-year-plus veteran of
Thoroughbred owning, breeding and training.
• Casse immersed himself in Thoroughbred racing when only 12 years
old. A trip in a horse van with his father to see Secretariat win the
Kentucky Derby in 1973 in track record time completely hooked him.
He began running his fatherʼs Cardinal Hill Farm when he was only 15
and began training officially when he was 18. He won his first race in
1979 at Keeneland.

the Hollywood Gold Cup (G1); San Fernando Breedersʼ Cup (G2);
Hawthorne Gold Cup (G2); Lone Star Park Handicap (G3); Longacres
Mile Handicap (G3); and the Berkeley Handicap (G3).
• Awesome Gem was the sixth Grade 1 winner for the operation,
earning more than $2.2 million and finishing first, second, or third in 17
stakes contests.
• The stable enjoyed a breakout year in 2007, winning five Grade 1
races with four different horses. It was ranked fifth nationally in purse
earnings with $4.5 million and started five horses in the Breedersʼ Cup.
The partnership was fourth in Eclipse Award voting for outstanding
owner and sold Dream Rush for $3.3 million at Fasig-Tipton
Kentuckyʼs November sale.
• West Pointʼs first graded stakes winner was Ethan Man, winner of the
Swale Stakes (G3) in 2002 and the stableʼs first Breedersʼ Cup starter
when 10th in the 2003 Sprint (G1).
• In 2009, the operation won the Stephen Foster for the second time in
three years with Macho Again, who also finished second in both the
Whitney Handicap (G1) and Woodward Stakes (G1), the latter behind
2009 Horse of the Year Rachel Alexandra. In 2008, Macho Again won
the Jim Dandy Stakes (G2) and was runner-up to Big Brown in the
Preakness (G1).
• A West Point favorite was King Congie, who won the 2011 Tropical
Park Derby. He was named after Congie DeVito, a longtime West
Point employee who passed away at the age of 35 on Feb. 16, 2011.
DeVito suffered from osteogenesis imperfecta, commonly known as
brittle-bone disease, and was born with 25 broken bones.
• West Pointʼs founder, Terry Finley, has been involved in the
Thoroughbred industry for more than 25 years. A graduate of the
United States Military Academy at West Point, he holds degrees in
mechanical engineering and served a three-year tour of duty in the 3rd
Infantry Division, leaving the army with the rank of captain.
• He began working with Thoroughbreds as a teenager and started
racing partnerships in 1991. Since then, West Point has syndicated
nearly 300 horses worth more than $20 million and maintains offices in
California, Kentucky, and New York. It currently manages the portfolios
for nearly 400 investors and a stable of approximately 60 horses at
various stages of training.
• Finley began developing racing partnerships in 1991 after acquiring a
$5,000 claimer from Philadelphia Park named Sunbelt. That gelding
debuted for West Point Thoroughbreds two weeks later and won for a
$6,500 claiming tag in the third race at Philadelphia Park on Aug. 27,
1991. The chart for Sunbeltʼs win for that race lists the owner as
“unknown.”

Quick facts about Dale Romans:
• Dale Romans earned his first Eclipse Award for Outstanding Trainer in
2012 following a season that saw him saddle the victors of nine Grade
1 races, including Little Mikeʼs triumph in the 2012 Breedersʼ Cup Turf.
…Little Mikeʼs Breedersʼ Cup win was one of 20 graded stakes
victories for Romans in 2012 as he finished fourth in the nation with a
career-best $11,834,249 in earnings.
• Little Mike became Romansʼs third Breedersʼ Cup winner. He earned
his first Breedersʼ Cup victory when Tapitsfly won the 2009 Juvenile
Fillies Turf and won the 2011 Breedersʼ Cup Mile by a nose with 64-1
long shot Court Vision, paying $131.60. … Finished second in the
2011 Dirt Mile with Shackleford and second in both the 2004 Classic
and Turf with Roses In May and Kittenʼs Joy, respectively.
• After a slow start to 2013 that saw his stable win just two graded
stakes through the end of August, Romans rebounded with a big
September in which he tied Steve Asmussen for the meet title at
Churchill Downs. Donegal Racingʼs Cleburne and Smart Cover both
put themselves on a path to the Breedersʼ Cup Juvenile by running 1-2
in the Iroquois Stakes (G3) at Churchill Downs while Little Mike earned
his way back to the Breedersʼ Cup for a title defense by winning the
Joe Hirsch Turf Classic (G1) at Belmont Park. Romans also has a
possible Breedersʼ Cup Mile contender in multiple graded stakes
winner, Silver Max.
• Little Mikeʼs win in the Joe Hirsch Turf Classic snapped a four-race
losing skid and was his first win since his Breedersʼ Cup victory. The
gelded son of Spanish Steps began his six-year-old campaign in
Dubai, finishing 11th in the Dubai Duty Free (UAE-G1), and ran sixth in
the Arlington Million (G1) in his attempt to capture that race for a
second consecutive year.
• Popular Romans was honored in Dec. 2012 as the winner of the Big
Sport of Turfdom Award which is “bestowed upon a person or group of
people who enhance coverage of Thoroughbred racing through
cooperation with media and Thoroughbred racing publicists.”
• Romans captured the first Triple Crown race of his career in 2011
when his stable star Shackleford was able to hold off Kentucky Derby
winner Animal Kingdom for a half-length victory in the Preakness
Stakes ... His first Classic win came one year after he “hit the board” in
all three Triple Crown races. Paddy OʼPrado finished third in the
Kentucky Derby and then stablemate First Dude finished second in the
Preakness and third in the Belmont Stakes.
• Experienced his breakout year in 2004 thanks in part to Eclipse
Award-winning Kittenʼs Joy, runner-up in the Turf, and Whitney
Handicap (G1) winner Roses in May, runner-up in the Breedersʼ Cup
Classic. They were Romansʼ first Breedersʼ Cup starters ... Roses in
May returned in 2005 to win the Donn Handicap (G1) and Dubai World
Cup (UAE-G1) before being sent to Japan for stud duty. Kittenʼs Joy
also was retired in 2005 after finishing second in the Arlington Million
(G1) and now ranks as a leading sire for owner/breeders Ken and
Sarah Ramsey.
• Kittenʼs Joy also is the sire of the Ramseysʼ multiple Grade 1 winner
Big Blue Kitten, who was second to Little Mike in the Joe Hirsch Turf
Classic and is slated to be among the leading contenders for the
Breedersʼ Cup Turf . “He was the game changer for me in my career,”
Romans said of Kittenʼs Joy. “He did so much for me and he keeps
doing it. We have a breeding right so heʼs the gift who keeps on
giving.”
• Romans has expanded his operation in recent years to include his
Liberty Lane Training Center based in Goshen, Ky. and a 105-acre
nursery near Lexington he acquired. Romans Racing also began
consigning horses at public auction in 2012 with offerings at the
Fasig-Tipton Saratoga select yearling sale and Keeneland September
yearling sale.
• Won his 1,000th race on June 14, 2006, at Churchill Downs with C F O
Lite ... Has won training titles at Churchill, Keeneland, and Turfway
Park … Key assistants are Baldemar Behena (Churchill Downs and
his private Liberty Lane Training Center, Kentucky), Mary Doser (New
York and Florida), and former jockey Tammy Fox, his partner of more
than 20 years who also serves as the primary exercise rider.
• Grew up on the Churchill Downs backstretch learning his trade from
his father, Jerry Romans, who passed away in 2000 … Credits his
father with having the greatest influence on his career. “The biggest
thing he ever taught me – the racetrack is a small world. Donʼt cheat
anybody if you want to survive.” ... Says he also learned from watching
other trainers at Churchill Downs, particularly Don Winfrey, Greg
Foley, Angel Montana and Bernie Flint. “I watched the people [trainers]
at the gap, watched what theyʼve done right and what theyʼve done
wrong, and taken a little bit of good from all of them,” he said.
• In addition to working for his father, Romans worked for Hall of Fame
trainer Woody Stephens for four months. He took out his first trainerʼs
license at age 18 and saddled his first winner on Feb. 15, 1987 at
Turfway Park with a filly named Miss Mindy, whom he bought for
$1,500. He also scored his first stakes win at Turfway with Morning
Punch in the 1991 Florence Stakes.
• Romansʼ preparations of Sharp Humor for the 2006 Kentucky Derby
was a focal point of the documentary “The First Saturday in May.”
• Has won more than 1,660 races with career earnings of more than
$80.7 million.

• Ron Ellis, who trains both Rail Trip and Include Me Out, is a long-time
trainer for the Jay Em Ess Stable. Rail Tripʼs resurgence in 2012 came
after being returned to the Ellis barn after being sent to the East Coast
in 2010 by Mace Siegel , where the horse was winless.
• Topped the owners standings at the 2007 spring/summer Hollywood

California and Paul McGee in Kentucky.
Quick facts about Jay Em Ess Stable:
• Board about a dozen mares in Kentucky at Taylor Made Farm, Mill
Ridge and Airdrie Stud.
• Jay Em Ess Stable made quite a splash in during the 2012 Breedersʼ
Cup.Rail Trip finished a strong second in the Dirt Mile at age seven
• In the past, Mace and Samantha collaborated on naming their horses,
trying to come up with names inspired by the fatherʼs interest in the
New York Times crossword puzzles. Such choices have included
Eighty Below Zero (a son of Itʼs Freezing – Alps), Hairless Heiress (a
daughter of Baldski – Sheltered), and Hedonist (Alydeed – Play All
Day).
• Samantha says, “I have been involved in racing for practically my
whole life.” When asked about her educational background, sheʼs
quick to say thatʼs come on the racetrack, too.
• Samantha was appointed to the Thoroughbred Owners and Breedersʼ
Association Sales Integrity Program Monitoring Committee in
September of 2008 ... She also serves on the Gregson Foundation
Board, which raises money for college scholarships for backstretch
workers. She and her father, Mace, were honored by the Gregson
Foundation in 2008 ... In 2008, Mace donated $100,000 to the
Thoroughbred Horsemenʼs Group, an organization which works with
horsemen in 18 states pursuing an ADW model that commits one-third
of revenue to purses ...
• Mace and Jan purchased their first horse at the 1964 Timonium sale
and named her Najecam, “Mace” and “Jan” spelled backward … Their
first stakes winner was Wininreno in the 1976 Julian Cole Handicap at
Calder ... Campaigned stable for many years under name Jan, Mace

her death in 2002 ... The late Brian Mayberry was their primary trainer
from 1977 to 1995.
• Mace became a racing fan while growing up in New Jersey and New
York and met his future wife, Jan, on a blind date at Aqueduct in 1962.
They were married two months later. Jan, a singer with big bands,
once said her favorite song was the Cole Porter hit, “I Love You,
Samantha,” which is how their daughter got her name

Owner
Chad Schumer ... Born: May 6, 1970 in Louisville, Ky. ... Residence:
Louisville, Ky. ... Family: Single ... Education: Majored in equine
business administration at the University of Louisville. ... Web site:
www.schumerbloodstock.com
Quick facts about Chad Schumer:
• Worldly is the only horse in training that Schumer owns wholly and
when the son of 1992 Classic winner A.P. Indy, who also sired 2010
Marathon winner Eldaafer, competes in the 2013 Marathon, he will be
Schumerʼs first Breedersʼ Cup horse. But it was a twist of fate that they
ended up together. “We donʼt typically endeavor to own horses. This
horse was bought for a client overseas and it was a rush job. The
client said it was all okay, but after the deal was done, he wasnʼt okay
with it and I was stuck with the horse,” he said. “It was never my plan
to own him. But as they say, it all worked out for the best and the rest
is history.”
• Schumer gave all the credit for Worldlyʼs turn around to trainer
Brendan Walsh. “He has done a spectacular job with him, an
absolutely outstanding job. This horse has flourished in his care,” he
said. “Brendan is extremely knowledgeable and is an excellent
horseman.” Sean Nix, who works at Schumer Bloodstock, knew Walsh
through a friend of a friend and recommended him for the job. They
met in April at the Ocala Breeders Sales, where Schumer bought a
couple of 2-year-olds for a client, and Worldly was in Walshʼs barn in
May.
• Walsh believed that Worldly belonged with top notch runners, but
Schumer had to be convinced. The horseʼs strong showing to be third
behind reigning Classic champion Fort Larned in the Homecoming
Classic Stakes at Churchill Downs last out did the trick. “There were
three Grade 1 winners in that field before Golden Ticket scratched.
Youʼve never seen a group of people celebrate so much for coming in
third. That night I said okay; letʼs run in the Marathon,” he said.
• Schumer is going to Santa Anita to see his horse compete on Fridayʼs
Breedersʼ Cup card, but he wonʼt get to enjoy the entire event in
person. “I am leaving California at 6 AM on Saturday morning,
hopefully after a long night of celebration,” he said. “I have a lot of
orders for the November sale in Kentucky, last year I bought 75 lots,
and I cannot lose that Sunday. I have too much responsibility and I
have to prepare for the sale.”
• Schumer got his start in racing from his grandmother, who moved from
New York to Kentucky and loved to bet the races at Churchill Downs,
where she took him every day during the live meets. “I started studying
pedigrees literally when I was five years old. You can imagine that I
was pretty bored at the track when I was very young and somehow I
got interested in the horses and their bloodlines. Initially, I started
reading Blood-Horse magazine and studying, and by the time I was 14
or 15, I was pretty well versed in pedigrees. Out of college, I started
meeting people and hustled around, and here we are,” he said.
• Schumer Bloodstock Agency was formed in 1991 as a full service firm
dealing with the international market of buying and selling
Thoroughbreds. He and his team assist clients with purchasing
broodmares and stallion prospects, pinhooking, mating
recommendations and insurance ... The agency is an established
leader in the exportation of horses to Australia, New Zealand, South
America, Thailand, Europe, Saudi Arabia and Japan. Schumer attends
auctions throughout the world and visits farms and racetracks globally
as well. The agency facilitates shipping and insurance as well to
ensure a smooth transition of bloodstock.
• Schumer also owns 10 percent of another horse in training, 20 percent
of a couple of yearlings, and one yearling who will race on the West
Coast when they did not bring the prices he wanted at auction.
Trainer
Brendan Walsh ... Born: in Cork County, Ireland in 1973 ... Residence:
Louisville, Ky. ... Family: Single.
Quick facts about Brendan Walsh:
• Marathon contender Worldly will be the first Breedersʼ Cup starter for
Walsh, who has never before run a horse on the world stage or even
in a Grade 1 or Grade 2 race. “When we were kids in Ireland, weʼd
watch the Breedersʼ Cup on TV and think what it would be like to have
a horse good enough to be there. I could only imagine that someday I
could have a horse in one of these races,” he said. “Iʼm very excited,
especially to have this happening so early in my career. Some people
go their entire careers and never get this chance. Iʼve had this dream
for a long time and now itʼs coming true. Iʼm on cloud nine and I keep
pinching myself to make sure itʼs real.”
• Even though Worldly has yet to run farther than 1-1/4 miles, his trainer
is high on his horseʼs chances in the 1-3/4 miles test. Wordly is out of
multiple graded stakes winner Urbane, who was second in the 1995
Kentucky Oaks at 1-1/4 miles, and was sired by A.P. Indy, who won
the 1992 Breedersʼ Cup Classic and the Belmont Stakes at 1-1/2 miles
the same year and also sired 2010 Breedersʼ Cup Marathon winner
Eldaafer. “Iʼve only had this horse since May or June when Mr.
Schumer bought him from Samantha Siegel. The first time I ran him (in
the Prairie Meadows Handicap) he was second to Golden Ticket. The
next time out in the race at Remington (Governorʼs Cup Stakes), he
was unlucky and lost to Prayer for Relief on the head bob, and then
the last time (in the Homecoming Classic Stakes at Churchill Downs)
he was beaten only 3-1/2 lengths by (2012 Breedersʼ Cup Classic
winner) Fort Larned. So heʼs been running against some of the top
horses and after that last race, we had it in the back of our minds that
weʼd run in the Marathon,” Walsh said. “He gives us the impression
that heʼd like to stay, and heʼs bred to stay. Heʼs the type of horse who
will give himself every chance to win. The Marathon, being so long, is
a funny race, so you never know. Worldly is a legitimate horse.”
• After completing the course at Irelandʼs jockey school and finishing
high school, Walsh took the stud management course at Darley and
went to work for Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoumʼs Darley
Irish division at Kildangan.”I spent my winters there breaking babies
and riding racehorses and in the summers Iʼd flip flop and work for
trainer John Hammond in England,” he said. “One winter I went to
Dubai and worked for Godolphin at the time Tom Albertrani headed up
the training. I ended up spending nine winters in Dubai back in the day
when they had some very good horses.” ...Walsh traveled with the
Godolphin horses to racetracks around the world, and was with
Daylaami (1st in the 1991 Breedersʼ Cup Turf), Fantastic Light (1st in
2001 Turf and 5th in the 2001 Turf), Street Cry (3rd in the 2000
Juvenile) and Dubai Millennium when they came to America to race.
• When moving on from Godolphin and Darley, he went to work as the
assistant to English up-and-coming trainer Mark Wallace. “We had the
European champion sprinter Benbaun. But I knew I wanted to come to
the United States, so I got a job with Eddie Kenneally and was his
assistant for four years. Thatʼs where I got my American experience,”
said Walsh. “I went everywhere with Eddieʼs horses and then decided
it was time to go out on my own.” He took out his trainerʼs license in
2011 and started one horse, who came in second, that year.
• Business began to pick up for Walsh in 2012 as he attracted owners
and saddled 52 horses with four wins, four seconds and eight thirds
with $149,905 in purses. Through Oct. 21, 2013, he had more than
doubled his wins (nine) and almost doubled his earnings ($279,056)
from the year before. “Considering Iʼve been on my own for less than
two years, things are going well. Iʼve been doing really well this year,”
said Walsh, who added that having a horse like Worldly in the barn is
doing wonders for him.
• Walsh currently trains for seven or eight separate owners and has
between 10 to 12 horses in the barn. He also works as his own
exercise rider in the mornings. “Iʼd like to have more horses and am
trying to build it up, but I donʼt want more than a number in the
twenties because I like to be around all of my horses every day and
give each one personalized care,” he said. “Itʼs a big advantage to be
able to get on them in the mornings. I rode some really good horses,
so I like to think that I can recognize whatʼs going on with them, when
theyʼre right and when theyʼre not right. No matter what level of race
theyʼre in, you only want to run them when theyʼre right. If you can ride
them yourself, it gives you a bit of an edge. I can see and feel a lot
more from the horseʼs back than from the trainerʼs stand.”
• Even though he traveled for years with the Godolphin horses to the
Breedersʼ Cup and other major events in the world, this time it will be
much different for Walsh. “Iʼve been around a bunch of Breedersʼ
Cups, Japan Cups and the like, but itʼs very nice to be going for my
own gig now,” he said. “This is why I started training. Hopefully, this
will be the first of many more Breedersʼ Cups to come.
