letters
from the interim headmaster
The academic year 2006 came to a close in June as Rodeph Sholom’s 8th Graders, clad in pale blue robes
and mortarboards, solemnly proceeded into the sanctuary to receive their diplomas. In a joyful ceremony
witnessed by family, friends and faculty, each member of this, our third graduating class, received the
blessing of Rabbi Levine.
Graduation is a defining moment in the life of a school, a time when all the effort and expectations
come together. This, our first annual report, is also a defining moment. The generosity and support demonstrated here are emblematic of the warm and caring community that is Rodeph Sholom School. I know
first-hand what a strong Annual Fund symbolizes, and know that it ultimately means that the community
is dedicated to serving and supporting its two most precious constituencies—the children and the teachers.
A head of a school has a front row seat on childhood. And I believe it’s important not just to administrate but also to participate. Last year I accompanied the 2nd Grade on their Circle Line trip. It’s one
thing to live in Manhattan, and another to travel around it. Having some familiarity with London, I actually thought we were going on a subway ride! The children were quick to point out my misperception,
along with landmarks that were new to me, and now being seen from a marvelous new vantage point
(the river, and through the children’s eyes). I watched the inaugural Middle School/Faculty basketball
game and was very impressed with the guest appearance as well as the skill level of Rabbi Levine. And
I listened in awe to our 4th Graders read their original poetry at the Barnes & Noble on Broadway and
82rd Street. As Upper Elementary students recited their D’var Torahs each week, the meaning of all we
do here became incredibly clear.
Your belief in our educational mission is demonstrated in your willing support of the Annual Fund and
Endowment. Your contributions go directly to enhancing our programs, strengthening the facilities, and
supporting the adults who teach your children day in and day out. On behalf of all of them, I want to
thank you for your infinite generosity.
from the C HAIRMAN OF THE BOARD
I am proud to present the inaugural Rodeph Sholom School Annual Report 2005-2006. This report not
only documents the impressive fundraising results we achieved for our first year of fundraising through
Friends of Rodeph Sholom School, but also represents a milestone in the school’s evolution.
Ensuring the financial future of this special school is among the most important responsibilities of
the Board of Trustees. Several years ago, a group of Board members, congregants and parents worked
together to revise the school’s governance and by-laws to strengthen the school’s independence. One
major result was the creation of a distinct fundraising entity, Friends of Rodeph Sholom School, which
has positioned the school to continue its growth as one of the most vibrant Nursery through 8th Grade
independent schools in New York City.
Rodeph Sholom School is thriving. We now have 706 students enrolled in the school. Our educational
program is unique, providing our students with a knowledge of the traditions, history, culture and values
of Judaism along side of and integrated with a rigorous secular curriculum. Our graduates are welcomed
at the best independent and public high schools in New York City.
Parents, grandparents, alumni parents, friends and foundations responded enthusiastically to the initial
request from Friends of Rodeph Sholom School. The Annual Fund has grown remarkably in three years.
The School Benefit, hosted by the PTA, was a major success. The funds raised through these two efforts
provided us with the financial flexibility to operate the school beyond our tuition revenue.
While I have the privilege of writing this letter, the real thanks goes to our hard-working parent volunteers who graciously give so much of their time to making our fundraising effort a success. The Parent
Association, led by Jerilyn Perman, and a dedicated Executive Board, work unstintingly on behalf of the
school. We are fortunate to have their leadership. David Fleischer, member of the Board and the Development Committee Co-Chair, never stops thinking about ways to improve the school and helped immeasurably to get Friends of Rodeph Sholom School off to such an impressive start. With a new Development
Office in place, headed by Director of Development Jennifer Rhodes, we are now well positioned to take
the school to the next level. We look forward to building on this auspicious beginning, and thank you
again for your participation and continued support.
Sincerely,

From the Co-Chairs of the Development Committee
It is an honor to chair the development effort and be a part of a fundraising renaissance
at the Rodeph Sholom School. Although this focused fundraising effort is only two
years old, a new culture of giving is already evident and, significantly, a substantially
stronger financial foundation has been established for our school. Although much work

Annual Giving Restricted Gifts
With a professional development staff now in place, we fully expect to deliver an even
better performance on a broad range of fronts over the coming year.
The Annual Fund has been and continues to be our primary focus for fundraising.
After its predecessor, the School Fund, raised $175,000 in school year 2003-2004, our

first dedicated fundraising effort in 2004-2005 raised $463,000, with the majority of
parents contributing. Last year, parents made over $806,436 in unrestricted gifts to the
Annual Fund, with a large majority of parents contributing generously. Our community

also pledged and contributed over $600,000 to kick off our new endowment in Friends
of Rodeph Sholom School over the past year.
As you will note from the charts opposite, fundraising activities contributed 8.1% to
our 2006-2007 budget and enabled us to better compensate our teachers and broaden
their benefit package. We’ve also been able to increase spending on technology and
programming, and augment all segments of the school’s budget.
Our focus in the year ahead will be multi-pronged, not only building the Annual
Fund and endowment, but also approaching foundations for support—an effort we
believe has significant potential. Additionally, our Development Office has installed
state-of-the-art software to streamline and professionalize our development effort, thus

a little in common. Both of them had fathers
whom they describe as great men. Both lost
their fathers in recent years.
Rob’s father, a champion of Jewish education, was born in Israel: “My father believed that
a Jewish education is a right not a privilege, but
in New York you have to be privileged to afford
a Jewish education.” Halle: “Growing up, my father couldn’t afford a lot of things, but a Jewish
education was paramount in his mind.”
Over dinner one night with wives Karen and
Janet, long-time friends, it became clear to Rob
and Halle that there was a perfect way to honor
their fathers: the couples are funding two complete Rodeph Sholom scholarships each year.
Both families chose Rodeph Sholom because
they want their children to experience their Jewish heritage—to continue the traditions, customs and language—and they want to give the
same chance to other children.
According to Rob and Janet, originally the gift
was to be anonymous. “But we want to encoursay. And for further inspiration: though Halle
Congregation, they gave the scholarship before
they even had a child at school.

Amy Yenkin knows the power of non-profits.
Giving in a responsible, caring way was not new
to her. It was the way she was raised. When
she started working in the non-profit world,
she learned another dimension of charity. She
began her career working for a public charity that had a staff of five, an annual budget of
$250,000, and relied on donations. “It helped
me understand the value of a $25 check or a
$100 check,” she says.
Now she works on the other end of the spectrum for a foundation with an annual budget of
$500 million where she directs a documentary
photography project. Being on the distribution
side has taught her about being strategic in
her own giving, just as her previous experience
led her to better understand the true value of a
charitable gift.
Every year Amy and her husband make a list
of charitable priorities and try to focus on a few
that are most important to them. Rodeph Sholom School is one of their priorities. “I know that
tuition does not cover everything and I have a
generous employer,” Amy says. The foundation
Amy works for matches selected gifts three-toone. Last year she and her husband decided to
use the match to make a more significant gift to
Rodeph Sholom.
As a child, Amy attended a Jewish day school
in Columbus, Ohio. “Rodeph Sholom is very
different from the school I went to but it gives
the children the kind of base we wanted, about
what it means to be Jewish. The kids are happy
and learning and we feel very supported by the
school community.”

endowment gifts
Gifts to the endowment are like making a deposit to the school’s savings account.
Endowment principal remains intact as the school spends a percentage of the interest
income. Endowment income funds faculty compensation and development, facility
enhancement, enriched academic programs and financial aid.

When looking back on your school days as an
adult, what do you remember? A textbook?
A classroom? Not according to Victoria and
Buzzy Geduld. “A teacher! Your remember
your teachers.”
So when the Gedulds made a major gift to
Rodeph Sholom School, they decided that supporting the faculty was most important. “We
want the school to keep and attract new, bright
faculty,” they said.
“Teachers are the front line. Students see
their teachers more than they see their parents
during the week. The teachers are raising your
children,” says Victoria Geduld. Her husband
concurs. “Teachers need better pay and benefits. These people chose teaching because
they love it. We need to thank them.”
Buzzy and Victoria chose to show their appreciation with a gift for faculty enrichment.
They believe it is important for teachers to
continue their own educations, which, in turn,
enriches the education of your children. Their
gift helps fund sabbaticals, increases tuition
reimbursement as teachers pursue advanced
degrees, and pays for trips to conferences in
their disciplines.

Why are the Gedulds at Rodeph Sholom?
“We chose Rodeph Sholom because it’s warm
and nurturing. The emphasis here is on morality
and ethics. RSS teaches an awareness of the
environment— and your obligation to your environment and to the community.” Thanks to Rodeph Sholom and its teachers, these ideals are
firmly in place as your children learn and grow.
