ILSHPA COURT REPORTER January 2016 President’s Pitch Greetings from Crabtree, The Holiday Season has passed and a New Year is upon us. With a new year comes new friends, new places, and new challenges. New friends can be introduced to our game. New friends can be found at new places. Try visiting a new set of courts. If you support them they could return the favor,. As for challenges, there is always something that makes you stop and scratch your head. As I write this article it is January 16. It’s not too early to start thinking about getting to tournaments. Tournaments are held for players benefit, to get qualified for State and World competition. The World Tournament is in Montgomery, Alabama this year starting on July 25th and runs through August 6th. Pitchers must have competed in 4 sanctioned tournaments from May 17th 2015 to May 27th 2016. To qualify for the Illinois State Tournament, 3 tournament are needed between August 1st 2015 to July 31st 2016. Well, I’ve said enough for this month. Remember to be courteous and have fun at our sport. We are our own ambassadors. See ya on the courts. Mike This ‘n That It won’t be long until the clanging of horseshoes will be heard in parks and back yards all over Illinois. Tournaments have been scheduled throughout the State and are listed in this edition of the Court Reporter. Take a look at them and make plans now to attend as many as you can. Tournament Directors work very hard to accommodate every pitcher, but do them and yourself a favor and register in advance. The ILHSPA Officers met and the date for the Spring meeting is March 20 at 1:00 PM and will be held at the Magnuson Grand Hotel, located at the intersection of I-55 and Route 108, exit 60, Carlinville exit. After exiting off the highway, turn right at the Shell station. They offer a great brunch starting at 10:30 for $11.95. There are always issues to discuss and suggestions on how to improve the ILSHPA. Discussions items will include the modification made to the Championship Class format at the State Tournament. Plan on attending this meeting and making your voice heard. 1st and 3rd Vice Presidents will be elected along with SecretaryTreasurer and Junior/Cadet Director. I have maintained for a long time that personal contact and invitation to friends and neighbors is a sure fire way to get others o join the NHPA. Already for 2016, there are three new members who are joining for that very reason. I have been an NHPA member for 29 years and still love it when my shoes go on the stake. Bring someone with you to the next league night or tournament. It may be all they need to sway them to become a member. Montgomery Alabama is the site of the 2016 World Tournament and runs from July 25th through August 6th. I will be visiting the site later this month and will have more specific details when I return from the NHPA Officers meeting. Circle these dates on your calendar and enter this event. It is a great time and show cases our sport on so many levels; the sheer number of pitchers in the United States, the tremendous sportsmanship which is an integral part of horseshoes, participation by everyone in the family, meeting folks from literally every corner of the United States as well as other countries. You will not regret entering, and who knows; you may become a World Champion!! During one of the storms this winter, one of the huge oak trees fell and took out part of the fence. There was no damage to any of the courts, and the park district has already repaired the fence. The committee is looking at several area motels and their recommendations will be in the next issue. Easy does it. Bill Marvin, Editor, Illinois Court Reporter WORLD TOURNAMENT UPDATE!! ANDRYSIAK January 16, 1940 – December 10, 2015 Richard was born and raised in Cicero, Illinois, living there until the age of 19 when he married his sweetheart Louise; she had just turned 18. They started their life together, began a family, and made their home in Westchester where they have been residents for over 50 years. They recently celebrated their 56 th wedding anniversary. Richard was a talented concrete finisher, an artisan of the trade. He began his career in his early teens working for Hot Point, Orzula, and HL Haffner. He later successfully started his own business R.A. Andrysiak Concrete. He took great pride in his work and continued in the trade for about 60 years. His reputation for honesty and high quality work preceded him and even after retirement he was called upon to supervise and finish various concrete projects. If you wanted a job done right, he was the man to call. He never cut corners and was honest in all his dealings, business or otherwise. Rich was a life-long sports enthusiast and outdoorsman participating in baseball, basketball, hockey, fishing, bow shooting, hunting, canoeing, kayaking, etc. He was active in the Westchester Baseball program as a coach in the 70s and had many happy memories of the team and their championship season. In 1989, he began pitching horseshoes competitively and for the next 25 years he and Louise traveled throughout much of the country attending horseshoe tournaments. Over the years, Richard won many awards including 2 world tournaments (Ardmore, Oklahoma in 2007 and Gillette, Wyoming in 2008). Rich enjoyed camping and meeting new people while they travelled; he loved to talk, and he never met a stranger; he was definitely blessed with the ‘gift of gab’. He volunteered his time and talents and even had a hand in working on the Horseshoe Hall of Fame in Wentzville, Missouri. His enthusiasm for the sport was instrumental in helping attain enough votes to hold the 2009 World Horseshoe Tournament in Springfield, IL, bringing much revenue to the state. He remained active in horseshoes through various organizations [Downers Grove Horseshoe Club, ILSHPA, NHPA] until his health began to decline in early 2014. He loved the game and especially the people he met through it. Though he always held to Christian beliefs, in 1995 he had a special experience with God and became closer to him than ever before. He was an active member in the Downers Grove Pentecostal Church for many years leading song service, teaching Sunday School, and helping maintain the church property. He gave generously to missions and other needs in the church. He was not shy and was always giving testimony of the goodness of God. During his sickness and while receiving cancer treatments, he always talked about the Lord, giving testimony of God’s goodness to anyone that would listen and did his best to encourage others who were also suffering through illness. Though Rich had many interests, his greatest happiness came when new babies were born into the family. He loved each child, grandchild, and great-grandchild tremendously. He spent much time with each one, especially in their younger years, always holding them and interacting with them. They—all of them—are the apple of his eye. He is definitely a proud Papa. On December 10, 2015, at approximately 8:40 p.m., with his wife Louise at his side, Richard (age 75), quickly and peacefully passed from this life to his new home in heaven with the LORD. Richard is deeply loved by his family and will be greatly missed. He touched many lives in a positive way through his kindness and willingness to help others. He demonstrated values that in this day and age seem to be fading fast: honesty, loyalty, dedication, commitment, integrity, and a good work ethic. He was a good friend, a good dad, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He leaves behind his loving wife Louise, nee Plica, and was the loving father of Kimberly, Denise (James) Horn, and the late Richy, Jr.; proud grandfather of Kathy (Adolfo) Montemurro, Kandace (Lars) Wisse, Kristen Young, Ian Horn and Michelle Horn; great-grandfather of Lucie, Lundyn, Leia, Raffaele and Aeris; dear brother of Bernard Andrysiak and the late Robert, Dennis, and Mary Lynn.
