Greetings from Crabtree
Weather has finally broken and outdoor tournaments are in full swing. Deadline for the World and
State are fast approaching. Don’t wait till the last minute to get qualified. The tournaments are out
there. Support them as much as possible.
In the last President’s Pitch I failed to recognize Bill Marvin for his years of service as Sec/Treas.
During my years with the Executive Committee Bill was always a go to guy. Although, he has
stepped down, Bill still answers the phone, and answers any questions I may have. A BIG THANK
YOU to Mr. Marvin.
Well better close for now. So may the weather stay good, your shoes are all ringers, and have fun
pitching. Bring a friend with you.

This ‘n That
Pitching is in full swing around the State. There are tournaments Virtually every week-end,
and some during the week. Pitchers in Illinois are blessed to have members who use their time and
talent to put on these events . Not every State is so fortunate. We get pitchers from adjoining states
who know how fortunate we are. Help whenever and wherever you can at tournaments and league
nights.
The deadline for entry to the World Tournament is fast approaching. Entries are running behind last year’s numbers, so get your entry mailed today.
A note about traveling to Topeka. The folks in Missouri have told me that Interstate 70
around St Louis will be under construction most of the summer. If you can find another way to avoid
the Metro area, do so. Huge stretches of this highway will be two lane and major delays are expected.
As of May 1st, 306 pitchers have purchased cards to be members of the ILHSPA. This number is comparable to last year, but I am certain there are others who simply need to be reminded
that it is time to renew their membership.
Our State tournament will be in Casey this year. Casey always makes us welcome and sure
know how to throw a festival. Free popcorn all weekend, rides for all ages, music, crafts, and food
for any taste make for a special time. Don’t miss it.
I received word last night that ESPN will be at the World Tournament this year. A huge thank
you goes out to Tina Hawkins, NHPA 2nd Vice President. Details are still being negotiated, but tentatively they will be in Topeka July 18th for broadcast. It has been decades since our sport has gotten this kind of national spotlight. This is one more reason that this tournament should be part of
your summer plans. We need to “pack the place” with spectators for the cameras, and let the

Mel Yostick, the World Tournament Historian, has compiled a list of participants who
have pitched in more than 10 World Tournament. Pitchers will receive a patch for each 10 year
increment of attendance. The top folks in Illinois is Ken Schaver, who has been in 27 World
Tournaments, Lee Watkins at 24, myself at 23, and Roy Franke with 20. I will be mailing
these patches out in the next several weeks. A comprehensive list can be found at the NHPA
web site horseshoepitching.com under the tab titled World Tourn and then click on WT Participants. To download this file, go to the bottom of the page and hit Download file. The file is in
an Excel format, and can be opened at this point or saved to your computer for future viewing.
Don’t forget to view the forum, and open discussion of horseshoe issues that can be
found on the NHPA web site. You will find a free wheeling range of topics, and if you join the
forum group, you can chime in and get your opinion on record.

The cost for entering is as follows; Men’s entry fee is $37 per entry; $25 entry fee, $11 scorekeeping for a 12 player
class and the $1 for Junior Fund. Men’s 30’ entry fee is $35 per entry; $25 entry fee, $9 score keeping for a 10 player
class, and $1 Junior Fund. Women’s entry fee is $35 per entry; $25 entry fee, $9 score keeping for a 10 player class, and
$1 Junior Fund. Junior Class no charge. Doubles Tournament entry fee is $10.

LATER THAN JULY 31st 2014. All pitchers must have an NHPA membership card. After the
schedule is done it will be posted on the ILSHPA web site, and you will receive a postcard showing pitching dates and
times.
Doubles Tournament is a walking mixed (men and women) doubles format. The 16 person classes will be sorted in a
descending order based on ringer %. The #1 person will be paired with the 16 th person in that class, #2 person will be
paired with the 15th person in that class, etc.
ALL PLAYERS MUST WEAR SHOES AND A SHIRT WITH THEIR NAME ON THE BACK. THE LETTERS MUST BE 1”
IN HIEGHT AND MUST NOT BE IN MAGIC MARKER OR INK. NO SLEEVELESS SHIRTS ARE ALLOWED.

ATTENTION Pitchers, if you are looking for a tournament for the best of the best in the
state of Illinois, then this one is for you! The top 6 pitchers in the state of the Men, Women and
30ft Men will go head to head in a 40 point unlimited shoe tournament. They will be nonmixed. They will make the “Championship” Class of the tournament. $50 entry fee and big
cash prizes.
However, if you are not in the top 6, you can still enter the open mixed tournament. The
first 48 pitchers who call, will make up the open tournament. The entry fee for open tournament pitchers is $30. Cash prizes will be given as well. These classes will be 6 man round robins. Phone call acceptance only! No walk-in pitchers will be allowed. Anyone from any state
can enter the open tournament. Championship classes are for Illinois residents only.
All pitchers must wear a shirt with at least their last name lettered neatly on the back.
Closed-toed shoe must be worn. Anyone not following this dress code may be disqualified
from the tournament and no refund will be given. $1 from every pitchers entry fee will be
given to the Junior Fund. Scorekeeping fees are included in every pitchers entry fee. All NHPA
and ILSHPA rules will be followed. Any pitcher not in compliance with these regulations may
be subject to disqualification. There will be sign-up spots for scorekeepers and judges! Come
early to reserve your spot to keep score.
Soft drinks and water will be available for purchase from the Springfield Horseshoe
Pitching Club. Two 50-50 raffles will be available for the day. Half of the money to the winner
and then the other goes to the hosting club.
Class A- 40 points, unlimited shoes Class B- 35 points, unlimited shoes
Class C- 30 points, unlimted shoes
Class D- 30 points, unlimited shoes
Classes E,F,G,H- 30 points or 40 shoes
*SCOREKEEPERS WILL BE NEEDED!!! You will be paid $2 per game!*
**JUDGES WILL BE NEEDED!!! You will be paid $10 per shift!**

Championship pitchers who do not make the cut, but wish to pitch in the open tournament will receive $20 back the day of the tournament because you have already sent in your
entry fee hoping to make the championship cut.
