PRESIDENT'S PAGE In reviewing the past year's work, I must first of all give much deserved
credit to all of you members who have generously given of your time to the
work of our AItKANSAS GENEALCXl ICAL SOCIETY.
Everyone has been most helpful in sending in family data to our capable,
energetic editor, Mrs. M. B. Cia, and she has incorporated all of this data
to provide us one of the most interesting, useful publications available in
our field.
Much interest was generated b,. the two Seminars we sponsored, and many new
members were added as a result. Mr. Ronald Bremer of Salt Lake Cit,. conducted
the Seminars and all who attended were impressed with his "know-how" and .
methods of imparting his knowledge to those of us, both novices and "old
heads" who could be present.
Our membership of AGS has grown to a record number of some 520.
About 30
these are from various libraries, about 10 represent exchanges with other
SoCieties, and the remainder represent individuals.
of
We added one Honorary member to our list this Jear; Miss Jane ~le of Little
Rock is a pioneer genealogist; she is a charter member of AGS and we are most
happy to confer this honor upon her.
The announcement of the publication of our Ancestor Chart book was. made at the
Annual meeting and it contains 66 charts of members and friends. These are
mentioned elsewhere as to availability and price. We only grazed the surface
with these 66 charts, and alread7 have enough on hand to publish several more
books; let me urge you to send in your chart for inclusion in one of the future
publications.
We are pleased with the formation of a new Genealogical S0ciety in Batesville;
it was organized September 4, 1975 with the intent of promoting the purposes of
the AGS in Northeast Arkansas, particularly in the counties of Independence,
Jackson, Sharp, Lawrence, Stone and Izard Counties. ,Their p""st<!ent is Mrs.
Chalman E. Green of 2165 ~n Street, Batesville, Arkansas 72501 and their
Secretary is James L. Morgan of 314 Vine Street, Newport, Arkansas 72112.
This group has already volunteered their services in the work of indexing the
1976 ARKANSAS FAMILY HISTORIAN. We certainly appreciate this offer and are
most happy to accept.
.
Now, let me thank you for electing me again -- to serve you in 1976. I hope that
we can continue to work together for the betterment of our Society and the constant
generating of more interest in our hobby (obsession, that is!). Thank you, again,
for your trust in me and I hope to warrant that trust.
Our next Quarterly meeting will be held December 6, 1975 in Newport, Arkansas.
Quarterly meetings are open to all memb... s and, if you like, join US there about
11:00 at the Library, browse around the library, have "Dutch Treat" lunch with
us and stay for the business meeting.
This is the last publication for ,.ear 1975; don't forget to send in your membership dues for 1976.

The Arkansas History Commission has been mentioned before but
I would like to bring its full importance to the attention of our
members.
It is our STATE ARCHIVES, authorized and financed by the
Arkansas Legislature.
It is located in the Old State Capitol, 300
West Markham Street, Little Rock. A beautiful building, but not
suitable or adequate for our State Archives.
Dr. John L. Ferguson is the State Historian and has a staff of
eleven people. They are responsible for all public appearances,
ordering, cataloging, indexing, filing, filming, film processing,
correspondance, assisting the public in research, etc., (in other
words: FULL OPERATION). They are very efficient and courteous and
will make every effort to help with research problems but they do
not have sufficient personal to do your research for you. They expect to serve over 5,000 patrons and handle over 10,000 pieces of
mail in 1975.
Anyone interested in Genealogy will profit by a visit to the
Arkansas History Commission. There are ten microfilm readers, and
one person is always on duty to put the film on the readers, check
out books and offer assistance in locating needed material.
When
needed, a second person will come in to help, if at all possible.
Sometimes they just do not have a second person.
It is necessary
for all microfilm to be loaded and removed by a member of the staff
because all people are not familiar with the operation of the readers
the microfilm must be returned to the correct box, and be replaced in
the correct file.
Books and manuscripts must be protected from mutilation and theft by the public. They hace Census records for all the
various states, Biography files, Military records, County records,
Cemetery records, books, magazines, old newspapers, Popst Office records, and many others depending on what has been given to this office,
and what their budget will buy.
This is OUR STATE ARCHIVES, and it needs our suppo~t. Go by and
use these important records, and see for yourself what we have and
what we need.
Let's let out Governor and Legislature know the services that are provided and the need for adequate facilities and personel to take care of the preservation of the Historical Heritage of
our State.
Let's give them our recognition and support.
MRS. LEISTER E. PRESLEY
The Genealogical Assistance Committee will answer all letters
with encloses S.A.S.E. (Self addressed Stamped Envelope). We do not
offer free research, but will make suggestions as to where to search
or will try to suggest a researcher who works in the section of the
state where your Ancestors may have lived. Send to:

IMPORTANT NOTES FROM YOUR EDITOR!
This is the last issue for 1975! Before you forget (or get
left off the membership list for 1976) use the pink slip in the
front of this issue and send your 1976 renewal. To the many who
have already, without a reminder, sent in their money, our most
humble thanks! This has saved postage and of course once your
card is moved to the 1976 new file, you will not wonder if enough
copies will be printed. This year has already seen two reprints,
in addition to a complete new publication, our own ANCESTOR CHARTS.
We did hope to print two volumes in 1975, but time ran out.
We will try to get an early st4rt in 1976 and see how many we can
publish. Enough for several issues are already on hand, but it
will take some doing to get them in order to print and indexed, so
if you have not sent your ~cestor Chart already, it is not too
late (take your time, and make it as complete as possible, but do
send it!)
For the present we do have some material on hand for our
Arkansas Family Historian, but remember it takes much material for
an entire year, so check your own Family Histories and if you have
enjoyed the information others have shared with us this year, they
may also enjoy knowing about your family and the more we get into
print the less chance of loss by fire, etc. So remember the more
you share, the more someone else will share with us.
December 6, 1975 will be our last meeting for 1975!
also be a different type meeting. See details below:
This will

Again a special thanks to all of you who have written nice
little messages, especially about our Arkansas Family Historian.
There is just no way, I can answer all of your friendly remarks,
but wh-ile stamping the labels, I have many friendlY little things
running thru my mind! Sometimes wonder if you are still in the
same place this time!!! (we do have some in trailers and they are
not the only ones that MOVE) most everyone is notifying well in
advance, before they do move now, and that really saves problems.)
Some few are the only member in their STATE (isn't that unbelieveable? but word is getting around. Last year only a few membe~s
lived in Louisiana, now we have many, and will welcome many more.
Sometimes a name stands out, as having promised Family Records
material (I remember those) and especially the ones who have sent
material. Some have offer to help others, in some area (out of
reach to many members). We have some semi-invalids, some deaf'
dumb (all are eager to work on their family records.)
Again last but certainly not least! Our SPECIAL SPECIAL
thanks to Ms. Margaret Hubbard for our 1975 1ndexe We have lost
count of the Indexes she has not only made, but typed ready for
